Emphasis mine. Im seeing more of this lately, and ive been wondering what the cause is. Did we finally drive away most of the good tanks(like we previously did with healers)? Is it an influx of bads buying jump potions and never learning to play properly? Entitled DPS leveling tanks roles just to cut in line on the que? After the last month or so, ive seriously considered advising new players to tank if they have a god complex. And at some point soon im going to become part of the problem, as leveling DRK is getting closer and closer to the top of my to do list. I'll be awful, but ill only be doing it for the panther and ill try to put as few lives in danger as possible.

DRKs can be good tanks, but they have the largest margin of error, and are actually pretty squishy up until 70. In the end, though, it all depends on the player. If you can pace yourself and rotate cooldown regularly, while not pulling beyond what you can handle (and don't drop grit during group pulls pls) then you should be just fine. :)

I can't speak for WAR, but DRK feels much, much, MUCH less sturdy than PLD was, as I've been levelling it.

And my general experience healing them has borne out. DRKs seem to lack in raw mitigation, with their best tool locked at 70. The little bit of healing from souleater combos/DA abyssal doesn't feel like it makes up for it enough.

Not that they're unhealable or anything, but it's enough difference that I noticed it.

There's really only so much you can do. If your tank insists on pulling a lot of stuff and isn't mitigating with cooldowns (or tank stance) like he should be doing, then you'll have to work a lot harder to keep them alive. If they bite off more than they can chew, you're at best trying to bail out a sinking freighter with a small bucket.

Still, maybe I can offer my own solution for bucket-bailing, and maybe it will help? You did ask for suggestions and all.

My general 4 man healing stance is Diurnal, not Nocturnal. I will flick to Nocturnal and apply a shield while running between pulls, but will switch back before I gain aggro on anything. You get the initial shield, and then you get the greater overall throughput from the Diurnal regen, so the best of both worlds for me. Any situation where spamming Nocturnal aspected benefic is a good idea is one that's going to result in a dead tank anyway, is my working theory. And of course, I always deploy an earthly star for delayed free burst heal (but you already do this, of course so this is not new and exciting).

If the tank gets in over their head, I'll pop Largesse and keep healing. Usually that's enough. If I need a extra snap heal to keep the tank afloat, I'll burn swiftcast on a bene II. It's not much of a time saver, but it can help. If I still need to keep those heals coming in faster, I'll burn Lightspeed as well. It doesn't actually save you any time, but the heals themselves come out frontloaded and not at the rear end of a cast, and that has mattered before.

Also, if they're squishy and it's a pain to heal them, I'll actively fish for Boles and keep one in my spread if I'm able. As well as burning otherwise useful cards fishing for a Lady of Crowns. It harms the group's DPS, but if you can keep Boles on the tank (especially boosted ones) it at least makes up for their failure to cooldown properly somewhat. And having an extra oGCD heal can be really helpful.

Two extra things worth keeping in mind:

Collective Unconsciousness has a 150 potency regen. You have to hold it long enough for the server to tick and apply that buff, but it's a great buffer to add to a tank if you know they're on the squishy side or if you just want extra free throughput for more DPS time. Once the regen is applied, you can then drop Diurnal aspected benefic on them and hit Time Dilation, giving them a good 30 seconds or so of regens that beats out what white mages are able to do (290 potency between them to regen+asylum's 250).

Lastly, one big overlooked fact is that Celestial Opposition is actually a 4 second AoE stun as well as a buff extender. So not only does it match up perfectly with the cooldown timer of Lucid Dreaming for that sweet 10 second extension of mp regen, it can also be used to give you a bit of breathing room on a rough pull.

At the end of the day though, if you're doing literally everything within your power and your power is too weak, then you can't feel bad about it, because the fault does not lie with you. The game's healing paradigm simply doesn't call for healers to have to sustain incredibly high throughput for extended periods of time, and anyone that is forcing you to do that (and dying because of it) needs to remember that they're not playing WoW and that healers aren't designed that way. And that they should probably use their cooldowns.

This is exactly it. Tanking is most certainly not impossible for a DRK, and they don't want for enmity generation, but they simply lack mitigation tools before 70. Warriors get Thrill of Battle, Vengeance, Raw Intuition, and most importantly Inner Beast , their proper regular mitigation tool, before 70. Paladins get Sentinel, Bulwark, Clemency, and most importantly Sheltron before 70. Dark Knights get Shadow Wall and Dark Mind, that's it. Even their Stormblood abilities before 70 are more personal utility and damage (Delirium is buff extension, Quietus is MP generation, Bloodspiller is pure damage). Dark Knight seems to be all about rewarding aggressiveness, and TBN gives them a ridiculous amount of mitigation and great off tanking capabilities, but until 70, you don't really have any way to deal regularly with damage mitigation other than praying you have a decent healer.

had the displeasure of getting stuck with a tank/healer couple for expert, who would occasionally slow down the run (i mean stopping mid pulls, stopping before bosses) just to take their clothes off and i can only assume talk to each other? i figured they were rp'ing, idfk. tank would pull without appropriate gear but i think they got the point they were holding the other half up after the second boss and everything else went pretty smoothly thereafter. :v

On the subject of the increase of bad tanks, I wonder how much of it is jump potions and how much of it is non-tank mains farming clusters. "Tanking is easy!"

I can't speak for all tank mains, but most of us leveled up our tanks first and don't really need to touch leveling roulette right now unless we're going for the bonus or the mount. I've experienced a lot of bad tanks too, as I level other jobs, including a squishy WAR in Bardem's Mettle who overpulled, turned off tank stance too much, and used Thrill of Battle as their only cooldown. He died four times during the course of the run, we wiped once, and all of it was his fault. The party at large clearly thought it was mine.

Once I'm done getting these last few jobs to 70 I'll start doing leveling roulette again...but it'll probably be awful :D

Time to throw some sunshine in this thread:

So I've had the urge to brush the dust of my WHM and finally play it for the first time since...2.2 I'd hazard a guess. Ran a Leveling and 50/60 roulette to more or less jump into the deep end of the pool. Thankfully I pay SCH, so I have a good feel on healing in general, but still wanted to get the kinks out for WHM. First time I ended up getting Aurem Vale and Quarn HM which was a bundle of fun, but I adjusted my hotbar a little and felt good about trying again. So today, I hit up Leveling, hope that I don't get AV again, but RNG still hates me as much as ever, and much to my fear, I see that familiar dungeon. I let the party know I'm rusty, and notice that our tank is viewing cutscene. Turns out, they're a newbie to the instance!

I'm afraid this'll go the route of my first AV run where all the mobs nommed on our faces and we wipe a few times, but I get to be most pleasantly surprised! Our tank lets us know they're new, listen to our advice about the rooms and fruit, and pulled smart! I got to throw in some damage and really start to get the feel for WHM while they did amazing work grabbing any extra mobs and keeping the hate up. They were so polite and the dps were on point for being helpful and doing great work burning the mobs. Man, makes me excited about how there are still some really awesome new players still joining.

Such a contradiction in there. Just cuz you met or made friends who decided to do the same thing as you it doesn't mean it is most of the players that main the tank jobs. I actually lvl my tanks doing leves till i hit lvl16 and from then on use DFs to get to 70. I met and made a lot of friends who does the same.

I got in a df and one of the dps would run away from the entrance without my buffs then in the first boss they decided to not group and get the buff the npc gave to reflect the boss swing and was KO and blame me cuz I didn't heal them. Good thing we were able to kick them cuz they wouldnt stop arguing on how he was KO cuz he wasnt heal and protect was never casted while the other members got protect and way to run the dungeon as a team ibstead of run ahead and try to finish it as a solo run.

Well speaking for myself I dislike playing tank since people seem to be very passive aggressive towards tanks.

No one wants to just speak up and ask for what they want; they expect me to read their mind. Like I have said before...you try to speed run you get people mad it isn't a full clear, you try to full clear and people get mad it isn't a speed run. There is nothing you can do except just play how you want to and then if the rest of the group wants something else they need to ask...problem is they don't ask usually.

I just play how I play which is usually speed clear, but instead of asking me to pull side rooms people will go and pull them on DPS. For one story recently I had a MCH in Stone Vigil that actually pulled the side room on purpose twice and ended up wiping the group so we had to kick him after the second time. He said nothing, but he would run ahead of me and purposefully shoot a mob and try to bring it back to us while we were still fighting stuff and well the healer couldn't handle double pulls in there because they were new, not that many healers could.... Stone Vigil mobs still hits decently hard.

If he just wanted me to pull the extra mobs for more EXP he could simply ask, but he didn't...instead he wiped us when he could of just asked the group if we could pull extra. I mean certain low level dungeons it doesn't matter if a DPS or healer pulls stuff. From Satasha up to Haukke Manor the mobs are pretty weak so it doesn't matter too much, but once you get to Brayflox and up it starts to become a problem if people don't just let the tank pull.

If the party speaks up and says what they all would prefer then I am totally okay to oblige but they usually say nothing so I just play how I want unless I am asked to do something differently. Passive aggressive stuff like pulling more mobs on a DPS job won't get you anywhere with me. If you want something then ask for it like a normal human being.

Another issue I have on tank is healers. A lot of them like to spam Medica II and keep Regen on me between pulls. I try to keep clicking off the regens but then just as I pull they put another one on me and then the mobs run away :/

So I sometimes politely ask if the healer can wait until I get hate on the mobs and not use regens on me between pulls. Usually the response I'll get is they'll start spamming even more regens on purpose to spite me for even daring to ask them politely. It is pretty easy to tell because after I ask they'll start spamming Medica II multiple times in succession now and using regen over and over on me even if I try to click it off and use regen on the whole party even sometimes.

Due to that I throw a mini celebration if I load in on tank and my healer is a SCH or AST. Mostly WHMs seem to do this kind of behavior I don't know why...I haven't yet seen a Diurnal AST do this kind of behavior, but I've seen a lot of WHMs.

I mean putting up with this kind of troll-like passive aggressive treatment really doesn't make me want to play tank.

In general, if you main a job, that's what you're taking to 70 first. (Why would you call it your main if that's not what you take to 70 first??) I main Warrior. I played Warrior to 70 first in Stormblood. I leveled Paladin to 70 second because I raid and getting tanks to 70 was top priority. Those are the jobs I raid on and they had to be at max, and geared, by the time the new raid dropped. I am not by any stretch unique in this. This is a common practice with players who actually "main" a job.

Anyhow, it's a little weird that you're being so nitpicky that my experience contradicts yours when I explicitly said I can't speak for all tank mains.

Shout out to the duty find group for Lakshmi NM last night. There was no indication that anyone there was new but boy, people just suddenly forgot Vril existed like it was going out of style lol

And they forgot it existed not once but multiple times. And it’s one thing when your healer forgets to Vril but it’s another when BOTH don’t do it. So they die simultaneously, leaving our lone RDM to rez them constantly (that RDM deserved every comm). Special mention to the BLM who’d get the stacking marker and proceed to take it AWAY from the group every single time, even after being told the opposite. I have no clue why anyone kept rezzing him after the third or fourth time this happened.

The kicker was one of the healers who kept forgetting to pop Vril throughout the encounter had the audacity to blame the DPS for the bad run, referring to us as “potatoes.” I dunno about ya’ll, but I wasn’t the one dying to Divine Denial every time it happened lol

In other news, I’m hyped for 4.1 SMN.

Bardam's Mettle as BRD was a bit of a sad affair, with a DRK, a SCH, and a BLM.

To begin with, the DRK did a small pull. I was a little irritated, given that we have the best AoE DPS in the game, but I understand if a tank wants to do small ones in there. It's painful.

Except that this (mentor) BLM decided to just stand around, doing nothing, until the DRK took the silent message and pulled further. We ran into further problems, with me somehow ripping aggro on a mob that the DRK apparently didn't notice, and on another, later pull, the SCH slapped down Sacred Soil... only to have the DRK drag the mobs to the side and plant his ass firmly outside of it.

"the big blue circle is a buff", I typed out, thoroughly annoyed at this point. No word on whether anyone except the SCH read or even noticed that, so I just stopped trying and we got to the end. At least I made a new friend out of that run, in the SCH!

After that, we went on to run 50/60 roulette. Sohm Al HM, with a newbie WAR who couldn't have been more different from the DRK. Actually stopped to ask for advice and followed our directions. They got basic things accomplished, like steaming the first couple of pulls. I'm sorry I forgot to comm them.

If that guy's raid tank does it he's a bad tank, and if he's raiding savage spends a lot of time dead.

On WHM in Bardam's and got my first under-geared "tank-with-no-cooldowns". I nearly degraded into a cure2-spamming "healer-that-don't-dps". Still managed to dish out more AoE dps than the BRD. Nobody died. No comms.

In other news, many, many props to the people making my SCH experience at 70 super enjoyable. Tanks haven't been doing the crazy bonkers wall-to-wall pulls, and if they do big pulls, they rotate cooldowns and DPS shred them down quickly. You're all amazing.

That guy was severely misinformed and I feel bad for his friend's healers.

Yesterday I loaded into a mentor roulette, 0 min in prog. It was Castrum Meridianum, two people were dead and the mobs were charging a dps at the entrance. I asked what the heck happened in 0 minutes?? All that chaos because one tank dropped... We ended up having a smooth run but it was clear both healers were new. Which didn't end up being a problem.

I was referring to your phrasing. Like, make a better phrase for the next time and just giving you an example that your own words are contradicting you.

P.S I was not angry. Take it like a classmate that hear another student studying and/or trying to memorize a chart but is not using an efficient technique so one of them point it out and give the rrason why. Sorry if that make you think that is a bad attitude or that it piss me off lol

Well I'm glad to see all the people calling tanking "hard" makes me feel a lot better about my failure to dps well while I merrily tank fine.

I don't find tanking 'hard' per se, but I can't utilize my DRK to the best of its abilities, whereas with healing, I'm learning that I work much better in that role. Insofar as the posting I made the other day, thanks for your comments. It really feels like whenever I'm healing, I tend to come across a bad tank whose job I do better...and if I switch to DPS, I find healers not able to do the basics of their job. It's a weird world we live in in Eorzea.

Yeah I mean I don't find most DPS classes "Hard" it's just that doing good dps with them especially in tougher content is very hard for me. In the same content I perform much better with tanks, even often outdoing the dps my dps classes did in the same content.

Leveling Dragoon right now and liking it so far. Maybe a melee dps class will end up different.

Ran Castrum Abania as tank. WHM for a healer. Not a single Regen nor Asylum were had for the duration. The RDM I brought with me had to keep me alive. I died to the bleed on the final boss because his Erase was on cooldown.

I just did an expert roulette with a friend and we got Temple of the Fist. We had this tank and dps that were some "couple" which seemed to like to argue. I've done the dungeons hundreds of times as healer with no issue and no KO's.

Tank turns off shield oath mid pulls for whatever reason. (Not to mention never used rampart of sentinel) DPS died at the final boss to the orange arrow because they were at the opposite end of the arena from the rest of the party but just stood there and didn't move at full hp. Then dies to it because everyone showed up a second too late because that is how the orange arrow stack mechanic works. Then the "couple" proceeds to accuse me of not healing of the entire run, which is utterly nonsense. Then said that the dps "couldn't" run during the orange arrow which is also nonsense. Gave me some line like "I've never ever died in this game, you suck as healer." Well clearly they just died to their own stupidity, and even benediction can't fix that. They tried to vote dismiss me but my friends vote prevented them from doing so.

They stood outside the final boss and just proceeded to argue with me and didn't want to just try again. Called me "mouthy" for trying to defend myself from their BS.

This is the first time in a long while anyone has tried arguing with me like this. It just reminds me why I try to not party with randoms because you sometimes end up with these kinds of people.

Had a MCH in Amdapor Keep use Blank (knockback) on a mob, which ended up pointing a huge conal AoE towards my path of escape. Asked her not to, and she told me it was "to move mobs at a tank's flank to their front" for better positioning.

... but I'm not a WAR, and I was positioning to grab the Void Call mob that spawns and usually tries to eat the healer's face. It made my job harder because she thought she was helping.

I get a lot of MCHs like these in roulettes, but that's the first time I've been told why they do it. But please, to all aspiring MCHs -- don't use Blank in dungeons.

Had a downright weird levelling roulette today. I was on SCH, got Sastasha... so I planned to just let Eos handle it and DPS.

Our tank was a sprout level 30 Gladiator (not PLD), who never spoke, never used flash, and just focused on one mob at a time. It happens at that level, no big deal, Eos can still handle it no matter who winds up having stuff hit them. It got weird with the DPS, though...

They tried to explain to the tank to use Flash. Multiple times. Then they got frustrated. Then they just dropped. No attempt a vote kick (which with both of them pissed off, would have succeeded), no nothing. Just 'I'm out' and drop. It's not like we were having any trouble clearing the or even going slower than a usual group, so I found it a really strange overreaction that they'd both just give up after waiting in the queue. Replacements came in and we didn't miss a beat.

We chugged along taking turns tanking between the ARC, SAM, and myself, and everything went just fine (only had to cast Physick twice, Eos did the rest). But I've never seen two DPS just decide to drop like that in a group that wasn't having any difficulty clearing the dungeon. Very, very odd.

Didn't think of it, unfortunately.

The highest level dungeon I've done that effectively had anyone tanking was Qarn, where it was split between a SAM and my AST. The early ones are definitely fine, as you said. That's why I find the DPS reaction so weird.

To be fair, I'm a SCH main, but I leveled WAR first since I was expecting to run through the story with my WHM-main friend so there are exceptions.

Levelling DRG in Bardam's. I hit 66 halfway and learned Dragon Sight. Remember DRGs used it on me when I was tanking, so I used it on the tank. During the second boss I reads the tooltip and was thinking to myself if it increased the other DPS by 5% why did they give it to me as a tank? So I gave it to the RDM and immediately figured out why they give it to the tank. The RDM high tailed it away from me. Tried it again, once again she booked it away from me.

Sometimes I give dragon sight to healer that know how to dps But only if other dps did crap damage and not AOE.
But give it to the tank that knows how to stance dancing seems to be most effective somehow.

Loaded into leveling roulette on my WHM, and landed in Haukke Manor (which I get way too often...). The Tank is a PLD is watching the cutscene, but I notice he's in level 50 gear and has his ARR Relic, which is unusual. Party is me at 63, this sprout PLD, a 70 RDM in his job gear, and a non-sprout Bard.

Opening drops, PLD goes into Sheild Oath, I buff and we're off..... To have this PLD face pull the first group and eat the Handmaiden's AOE. He's using buffs and in tank stance, so I have no issues keeping him up, but the guy's playing like he's never seen Haukke Manor before. He forgets to Flash on occasion, and we have to back track for keys. He never stuns the maidens (I tell him how) and he usually just eats it.

We get to the second boss, and PLD tries to focus the skeleton. We DPS the Jester too quickly for it to be an issue, and it goes decently otherwise. Afterwards BRD and RDM Return like normal, and I see the PLD start to run confused to the room door. At this point I KNOW he doesn't know Haukke at all, so I tell him, "Use Return" in chat as I do so.

All of this Tank's behavior looks like he's never done Haukke at all, but his gear was sending a different message. The run had been going slowly, so I think the BRD and RDM we're holding back.

RDM suddenly asks, "Did you guys come together?"
"Nope, I came roulette."
"I'm just having a hard time think this guy earned a relic."

Hoo boy. I just took on the stance that I was healing a newbie.

As I start typing, PLD responds, "Well, I really don't care what you think."

While I say, "Ehh, I just thought maybe he's returned from a break, really out of practice, or something, who knows!"

RDM just says, ":/"

We're up to the Ahriman in front of the boss room so I just say, "Now guys we're right at the end so let's finish this."

Final boss goes just fine. RDM tells the tank he did well (which he did!). Tank thanks everyone and I walk out with a couple comms.

I guess I diffused it.

When I run with friends, all these dungeons up to Totorak have the rule of "everyone is a tank", because the mobs barely do any damage and you can have them split between the DPS, healer and tank no problem. Point is, I don't know why they were getting frustrated as it's completely doable even if the tank doesn't have a clue of their role. Did you check if they were from the same server afterwards through the contact list? o-O

You're right that this works but when the tank gets to Toto-arak and still doesn't have a clue what they're doing it becomes an issue. When are they expected to learn? 'Cause by and large a huge amount fail when faced by actual hard-hitting pulls in Brayflox.

I usually run Expert Roulette as BLM. I can recall the one and only time I was paired with a DRG in there who gave me Dragon Sight. You bet your ass I stuck to that DRG like toilet paper unless mechanics forced me to move.

In other news, I had a healer use LB2 at Zenos the other day, supposedly because the DPS were dead and they "needed the ress". Once again, I must ask myself how somebody gets to 70 without even knowing the basics of what LB does at what level.

I had an interesting moment yesterday in Emanation Extreme.

Myself and a friend of mine joined a pratice run for Emanation Extreme. Everyone was being polite and learning the primal fight, as usually it goes ... but at the third try, during the countdown, the samurai in the group had a err.... "Leroy Jenkins" moment, and pulled the two adds and then jumped off the platform...

I have no idea if that was intentional, or just a harware malfunction or sticky key situation. At the beggining I thought (and still think, tbf) he was trolling/griefing. He did write in chat he was sorry a bunch of times and that he was embarassed for that. He got a ressurection, and the fight procceded as normal and we killed the primal.

That moment, however, was so strange. I could give him the benefit of the doubt, but having a SAM at max lvl myself, I don't see how the job could give you sticky key problem. But we all laughed at that and we still got the kill, so meh. Whatever.
