It's sad to see so many people expect the healer to DPS AND Heal when all they can do as DPS or Tank is Tank enemies and DPS enemies. Leave the healer ALONE ya? They don't dps? Then hey got a good reason. I used to main SCH all the time till I got so tired of everyone ALWAYS criticizing the healer, even if we do our damn jobs as we should. Do your own job, they do theirs.

Sure I DPS'd in between sometimes but ONLY if it wouldn't be a waste of mana (aka very lvl synched) for heals and ONLY if I could spare the time to.

Lvl50 roulette, Qarn pops, party was me as blm, then smn, whm and drk. Cute drk says she just came back to the game and didn't remember much, forgot grit so I tanked the first pulls but all was good.

Then I started noticing the smn... As a healer main I have the habit of looking at ppl's icons on the party list and I see that this guy has no aetherstacks ever since we started. First I thought he forgot due to sync, he was level 52, but nope. Then I saw he only dotted one monster and only when close to 10%, all rest was ruin1 and not even spam. We kill the frist boss mainly because of myself and the whm and as we move on, I say in party chat "(name) you should use your aetherstacks" and got no answer. More pulls and same story. I'm still trying to understand the reasoning behind dotting a mob at around 10% hp but well, maybe he has a puppy on his lap. After Emperatriz the whm speaks up "lol still no atherflow?" and I respond "lol no", then on the following pull the smn uses aetherflow and instantly burns it, but no bane or anything, there were no dots on the group. He then goes "I only use aetherflow on bosses", lies, but w/e. I say "your damage is based on your dots and stacks" and the whm explains the importance of aetherflow and dots but the smn didn't say anything more. I added "you're level 52..." thinking he should know that by now, it wasn't an issue of "you don't play like I want you to" but more about not understanding how the job works. No wonder I was always tanking. I tried to help the tank by quelling and have my shields up and the whm was making up for the smn with holy and nukes but things jsut didn't seem to want to die XD. Last boss and the smn kept dying; after the third raise from the whm I was gonna say "just leave him dead and dps instead" but meh, he should know. Not like that smn was interested in learning and/or improving anyways.
I think I have never seen a worse smn and it hurt, even though I only play smn as alternative to heals as of HW.

This is where you should have vote kicked the smn as his performance and playstyle is a detriment to the group

I personally think it's sad to see healers topping me off when I'm at 90%+ and then jumping in circles (or even doing dance emotes, seriously) till I take damage from another autoattack that they can top me off from. Even worse is when a SCH is just standing there doing nothing while their fairy autoheals me. Most of these kind of people don't even use the fairy buffs and I seriously have to wonder if they're actually at the keyboard or if they're tabbing out and watching Netflix. I'll gladly watch my HP drop into the 25-30% range if the healer wants to throw some deeps out so we can toodle on through the dungeon a few minutes faster. You'd be really surprised at how much a difference healer DPS can make, especially if the two DPS aren't the best geared. A well geared SCH can absolutely destroy trash mobs with very little effort and minimum danger to the tank if you're using your skills correctly.

Dunno, I go into a dungeon to put my best foot forward. My SCH lives in cleric stance. Mana shouldn't ever be a worry for a SCH. They have the best mana management tools in the game aside from BLM, which is set up to have infinite mana anyway.

Tanks DPS automatically while tanking. While they can do things to boost their DPS, even when in full on tank stance, they still DPS as part of their job. And tanks can't be expected to heal because besides PLD, they possess no healing skills for other players. And I do actually see PLDs use their heals sometimes.

DPS, same story. I've seen DPS off tank before, it's a legitimate strategy for some fights. And again, besides the extremely obsolete BLM/SMN physick spam, DPS cannot heal other players.

Healers possess notable DPS potential while tanks and DPS do not possess notable healing potential with the exception of PLD's Clemency, which is often used, so why should we not encourage them to DPS when they're otherwise doing nothing?

That being said, I've been running into lots of healers who don't know how to balance DPSing and healing and ultimately do neither effectively, so if you can't do it, please just heal.

I was once tanking in the first HW dungeon. Then, I saw that all my teamates were male Lalafel...

Nuff said.

But seriously, I just found it funny and went a bit RP with them for fun, like ''I have so many child 0_0'' Funny part is that they all went along and we had a blast. At the end boss,I remember I said something going like this: "You remember when your mom died?..... He did it" The boss got destroyed that time.

Oh I can top that, I'd just recently upgraded my gathering ring and my casting ring, was on SMN in the Aery, and the tank asked if the Dragonskin ring was doing great things for my INT.

I blushed, equipped the right ring, and thanked them for noticing.

Got a speed running huge pull tanker on ex roullete Phaos. Thankfully I'm able to keep up but I feel bad for healers that arent used to it/arent expecting it without some indication a huge pull is about to be done.
Pally says very little throughout the dungeon but spending 20+ minutes with someone you start to be able to tell what kind of person they are, especially when they pull bosses before everyone is actually at the gate.
Before final trash pull a BLM is afk for a few seconds in previous room. Pally "It'd be great if people could stop alt tabbing"
Yeah definitely the touchy sort.
I keep him alive until end of final trash huge pull. I immediately say "bio brb super quick". I get back less than a minute later to see he's reponded with "Fine I'm going to go clean my bathroom"
He's legit afkd to clean his bathroom before final boss. We wait for 3 minutes in case he's being a dick. Kicked him, got a new tank less than 2 minutes later.
NGL kicking a dick before final boss is great. He was so impatient and touchy he ended up not getting his daily that run B]

A1 spam. Went as my DRK knight.

I asked the DRK if he'd like me to supertank or if he wanted to for Faust. He offered to tank.

The fight starts, I'm out of stance, and he's tanking faust. So far so good. The first add spawns - and I see it's hitting our WHM maliciously. Might just be a slow pickup, the WHM had moved it into position to be picked up.

He didn't pick it up.

by the time second add came out, I had popped Grit and started picking it up with Unleash. When I asked him why he wasn't picking them up, he simply said "Oh you want me to do both our jobs? No thanks, I get enough of that in real life."

Are people really this ****ing stupid?

Did you actually explain to him what you meant by "supertank"? Or did you just call it "supertank" and expect him to know what you mean?

Maybe I am out of the loop but I read through your story here and didn't realize till the end what you meant by "supertank" since I've never heard this term before in this game or any others I've played.

So I guess I also fall into your category of stupid people? :/ I don't know about this; I don't think you can expect everyone to know all MMO terms. (I've been playing MMO's a long time and didn't know "supertank")

His reaction was rude but it is kind of unfair to call people stupid for not knowing/understanding a specific term they might have never heard before. You should try to be a bit more understanding.

If you did actually fully explain what you meant and not just called it "supertank" and he did that response he is just trolling you I guess

Nothing worse than getting paired with someone playing your main in DF and they do awfully....

and I just wanna add, this is probably a sore spot for me, because whenever my girlfriend or I wind up tanking with someone else, we get tanks that Don't listen (We both offer to supertank) and pull right away. It's frustrating to deal with this wierd influx of tanks that literally don't understand how the job works. Almost as annoying as all the STR Wars that don't use any mitigation.

-using Rain Death on single enemies
-constantly singing a song which is NOT Foe's Requiem
-shooting Flaming Arrow in the middle of nowhere
-NOT USING WANDERER'S MINUET

Got Fractal in my 60 Roulette today. Went pretty well until we got to the Curator.

We died like three times because a MNK wouldn't peel off the boss to go kill the adds, they kept running over lit-up tiles, and the healer wouldn't cleanse the bomb debuff.

I told them to do these things exactly, twice, and they still did not listen - and nobody was new, so it shouldn't have needed explaining in the first place. Got through with sheer grit.

This happen yesterday when I ran Sastasha NM with two of my FC mates. I was playing BRD (37), one FC mate was leveling MRD (16) and the third was leveling CNJ (16). When we got into the dungeon we spot a lala ARC with no pet. We waited, be he didn't summon. Okay, so we move on. Just after the second pull the ARC finally summons his pet, but it's the tanking carbby. lol No one complains and I'm laughing my butt off as my fc mate is tries to keep hate off the carbby. He even said in FC chat the the tank carbby is compensating. lol But, we made it through the dungeon. :3 All lawls were had.

Last night I'm leveling my marauder through roulette. Copperbell (My MRD was like 23 or something). Trying to pick up a tanking role, though I main SCH.

So we queue in and the conjurer has cleric stance up. Which I initially take to be a good thing. Except they also have the leafy-leaf.

First pull, I establish hate. I'm almost instantly dying. At first, I think it's my fault because I'm STR spec'd at low levels (for the hate). Pop ALL the CDs. Nothing works. Dead. Then I notice that the CNJ is still in CS. I say "Hey, do you know about cleric stance? You pretty much can't heal in it, unfortunately. You should try to take it off for now. :)" No response. The CNJ is stoning like a pothead in a hotbox.

I respawn, and I make the (very sad) decision to let the party wipe so I can work with this new healer. When they respawn, I'm all like "Hey, would you like some advice healing? You need to take off cleric stance and then focus on using cure on ..." The healer has run ahead and pulled the mobs. I'm all like O.O "Hey, you really should let me pull and you can heal me?" Nothing. "Hey there, <Do you speak English?> :)" Nothing. At this point they've died/rez'd/pulled again. I also realize that they probably never once tried to heal me in that first pull.

Vote kick. I felt SO bad about it because I really, really wanted to explain to them how dungeons/team play works and what your priorities are as a healer, but I just couldn't. Luckily, we had an ACN in the party so we progressed through to the first boss just fine until a WHM loaded in. The emerald carby DPSd while the ACN kept me up. If you're reading this: good job. Go SCH, you'll love it.

She's referring to Eidolon's post about "super tanking". It's a DPS's job to "quickly" kill adds. It's an OT's job to ensure the healers and DPS don't DIE during that phase of a fight.

Honestly, I've never heard the term "Supertank" as well, but I'm not as well rounded on end game raiding nor have I been a long time MMO raider/player. I can see how the guy may have thought you were just trying to ask "MT or OT" and maybe thought you (Eidolon) were just a new player using different terminology. Normally, the MT takes the boss and the OT takes the adds. Yes, he could of asked, but I wouldn't go so far as to call him an idiot.

To me, 'supertank' just sounds like someone flexing his muscles with how awesome he is at tanking, not necessarily meaning "I'll do the job of two tanks because I'm THAT good!"

I've never heard of the term 'Supertank' but given the context (faust tanking), it seems pretty obvious what this means though.

I don't tank so I tend to not comment on it at all.

The last (and only) time I heard supertank was on ffxi for tanks that used defense and hp to tank, as oposite to avoidance or kiting tank

I had a mental image of a tank doing the manderville pose. Now I really want to start going into dungeon's asking people if I can "Supertank" and then do that emote :D

But, I would also probably die if the other tank took me serious on the super tank aspect :P

Pursuant to DF horror stories-- I was in A2 yesterday for relic grind (playing as SMN). The WHM in our group only used Cure I and Cure II the entire fight, no cool downs, and was frequently just standing around not doing anything at full MP. Then ppl started to die. I did 3 resurrections as SMN and we somehow cleared (but with bodies on the floor at the end). I queue up again (this time as WHM myself) to avoid another situation like that. I get paired with the bad healer again-- this time he is playing on SCH. He says something sassy to me bc he was angry I called him out on how he was healing the last run. Things go badly for me-- we wipe twice and I get booted from the group (me healing as WHM, with my Thordan wpn). I was completely dumbfounded. Here is how it went down: PLD is wearing mind accessories (not even lying) adds are all over the place, nobody is in gobwalker, bombs are going off (we all have two or three stacks of debuff), sassy SCH is pulling a Nero and watching us all burn (he is neither doing dps nor healing), I have to cast aoe heals (more than I would have liked) to keep ppl up but because of this I am getting hammered by mobs pulling aggro, and SCH won't heal me. SCH calls me a horrible white mage and the tanks agree then I get vote kicked. Wow.

A3 on my bard with three BLMs and two WHMs dpsing the shit outta the boss without watching their mana (or our HP, we were at max. 50% and two people died). I was like "wtf do I sing now" xD In the end I chose to stick with requiem. Was cool.

Today I ran Leveling roulette and got Haukke Manor. In the party was a another BRD, AST healer and "WAR" tank. I put WAR in quotations marks because en rote to the second boss, healer asks: "Do you know about job quests?" I stop and looked at the party list and the tank was still marauder. The tank said he was going to get it, but I guess his queue popped. lol Anyroad, we move on, but as we where doing a pull, healer says he has to go and leaves. Not wanting this to be a total bust, I jump on party chat saying: No worries I'll get us a new healer" and bam! We got our-selves a new healer. Another AST from one of my many LS. ;3 The rest of the dungeon goes smooth. At the end the tank says he was sorry for the mistakes, but he did a fine job tanking even though he was still MAR.

And before leaving the dungeon told him: "To get the warrior job and never look back!" I even got two comms for it. <3 l love playing with new people. X) Makes running dungeons a lot more fun!

I do not mind either method. I prefer doing the supertank/Solotank method, to increase damage and kill faust faster. However, if a tank is uncomfortable, I am ok doing the 2-tank method.

What you failt to realise, is that my statement was that he failed to communicate anything about it. If someone says "I'd like to do it this way", that is fine.

By design, our job is to tank the mobs and deal damage. Both methods fufill this.

Holy crap. Are you people this incapable?

"I wanted to DPS" no, I wanted to do this effectively. Weather that means me handling faust + adds, or the other tank doing so, is inconsequential. I just want to get the fight done and over with effectively.

My preferred method for fights is supertank. It's a term I see in PF often on Balmung at the very least, but as stated, if you don't understand the jargon - you're free to ask. I dislike people that blindly agree without even questioning it, then cop an attitude of "OH you want me to do both our jobs." No, that was disrespectful and the simple fact that he was so daft as to not ask and then cop this better-than-thou attitude bothered me.

Again. No. I dont' want him to do both our jobs. I even offered before the pull to supertank in one sentence. Do you willfully ignore facts, or do you just enjoy the irony being incapable of reading and comprehending the basics?

When my BLM was a fresh 60 (This is relevant), I saw that a friend had a BLM sitting at the same level as my PLD and asked her if we'd level up together.

As we were going in, she showed me a screenshot of Ley Lines surrounded 4 intersecting fire circles, then her standing way outside of Ley Lines and adding the comment to her friend: "I will never yell at you for standing in AoEs as a BLM again". I laughed and made the comment that "RNG mage changed to I-can't-move Mage". (In case you don't understand the reference, the bulk of lv50 BLM DPS boost was based on firestarter procs prolonging your time in AF3). After that I said: "You think Ley Lines is bad? Wait until you combine it with Enochian!"

So my last comment loaded into the party chat inside the dungeon and the random black mage that was matched with us read it. His reaction was an awesome "Huh? You don't teach me my job!"..... We weren't even talking to him and didn't even know we had another BLM in party. In our defense, I said I was talking with my friend there about BLM mobility and he said: "Oh that's easy, it's just smart planning of swiftcast and procs" (not that he added anything new to a BLM main since 2.2 mind you). We ignored the attitude and I moved on to pull.

Expectations: Seeing as we had 2 BLMs, one I knew is decent enough and the other claimed to be so, I pulled more than I would with your average DF group. Instead of 2 mobs on the first pack, I'm fighting 5 mobs of the first 2 packs. My plan was to establish aggro in Shield Oath, pop Sentinel and move into Sword Oath (that's more mitigation than ShO AND Ramparts together btw) and start burning down things as the 2 BLMs AoE them to oblivion.

Reality: 1 BLM did the proper Fire III > RS> Fire IIx4 > Flare > Convert > Flare > Pot > Flare > Transpose > Fire 3 > Fire II > Flare > Repeat from Transpose. The other BLM however..... went on to spam Freeze. Great granted his "You don't teach me how to play my job" comment. :)

We did clear the dungeon. The random BLM wasn't TOO bad on bosses, even though my BLM friend who was parsing said, and I quote, "You destroyed us with DPS on that boss". Then I made the remark of "Sword Oath DPS OP" before we moved on to clear the dungeon. Let me tell you that the BLM did NOT get our commendations. :p

In all fairness, the MRD could have been 30 or synched 30, and someone in the party would be able to tell that. I kinda assumed this was the case and OP just didn't explicitly state it. Most of the story wouldn't make sense if it was a level 28/29 MRD

Just to add to what Eidolon was saying, I see the practice of tanking Faust + adds referred to commonly as "supertanking." It's a quick shorthand way to establish en route to Faust who is doing what. And I share Eidolon's frustration with tanks who say "yeah" then don't do it. I've started telling the other tank "I'll tank Faust and Friends, you dps" as I load in and have had good results with that approach. If they want to do it the other way, and say so, I'm good with that too.

If you didn't ask the other tank if he could tank both Faust abd the adds (or offer to do both yourself), you are at fault. "Supertank" is some bs made up term only you know; expecting another to know what you mean is idiotic on your part.

If you asked me that with no explanation, I'd assume you're asking about MTing, not about tanking everything.
Besides, you should ask it explicitly for your healers so they know what to expect...unless you like falling dead suddenly because you did something they weren't expecting.

If you didn't ask the other tank if he could tank both Faust abd the adds (or offer to do both yourself), you are at fault. "Supertank" is some bs made up term only you know; expecting another to know what you mean is idiotic on your part.

If you asked me that with no explanation, I'd assume you're asking about MTing, not about tanking everything.
Besides, you should ask it explicitly for your healers so they know what to expect...unless you like falling dead suddenly because you did something they weren't expecting.

Having never heard the term Supertank until moments ago, I find that it's fairly obvious what it means in the context of Faust. That said, if I was unsure, I'd ask. I wouldn't just assume (s)he means tanking normally.

I never understand why people want OT to grab adds away, it's like purposely slowing the run down for no reason and makes healing more difficult (and consequently reduces healer DPS as well as OT DPS).

It's really not lol. If you've run A1 or A1S to any significant degree you'll have a good chance of encountering this term. And if you don't know it and you're too prideful to ask about an unfamiliar term, and you just run in and pull without clarifying, then you're 100% likelier to cause a wipe because something wasn't understood.
