What good is vanity gear if we are so restricted on what we can wear? I would like to be able to equip anything in my vanity slots. Who cares if someone else doesn't like it...it's about what I want to wear not someone else.

No restrictions on vanity gear please. My desire for vanity customization trumps yours with regards to my character, and vice versa.
Just adding my 2 cents before I forget, YES 2!!
Numero 1! Whatever you do, restrictions or not, please be FAIR, either tanks can wear cloth/leather like vanity gear and Magic can wear plate/leather like gear too.
And second, do NOT make AF usable in vanity by any jobs other than the right one (DRG-DRG BLM-BLM PLD-PLD etc).Quote:
Tanks: All plate armours, scale armours, leather armours, martial cloth and caster cloth
snip
All casters: Caster cloth only
Other than that I believe opening the restrictions on everything will be nicer, as they have already said lore characters don't always wear class-appropriate gear.
Personally as a caster I would love to mix in some plate-looking gear. And let bikini tanks have fun XD
P.S.: please add an off button, will solve most issues and client-side as it should be, shouldn't be hard to implement. (off button for everything, specific characters off is harder and I don't expect that to be added, not really necessary).
Agreed. Though, I would still like to be able to use seasonal clothing for vanity. :(
Agreed, with the caveat that class-specific gear should stay class specific. This is more for the sake of diversity than anything, although seeing a 2h axe wielding warrior tanking in Darklight robes/hood would be pretty cool looking. Nonetheless, to at least keep the look classes somewhat diverse, I'd leave that one restriction in place.
I couldn't care less about immersion. It's a video game. Let people have their fun. You always have the option of grouping with like-minded individuals who demand they "look the part" if you so choose.
Vanity takes immersion away; all games are about immersion, RPGs or not. Why even give specific armors and clothing their own lore/visual/style if you let player change it as they please?
It's one of these things we have today on the gaming industry, you give everyone everything and end up with a meaningless game that looks like every other game... who remembers diablo 1 and 2? When you had a new, more powerful armor and your character changed visually, it was awesome.
That is a slippery slope. You want to hide bikinis because you do not want to see them. What if I don't want to see DL gear? Then we need a toggle for swapping armors on other players from their active ones, into vanity you pick. So for us both to enjoy the game, we need to be able to choose what everyone else is wearing. This gets incredibly complicated and silly, and all just because we both say "We shouldn't have to look at what others want to display".
Of course that will never happen, and we'll all have to "Deal with it" when it comes to people looking like clowns. The question is just why YOU shouldn't have to "Deal with it" when it comes to vanity. As it seems the answer is "Because SE wants their hard work armors to be worn and seen and not replaced by only the most popular clothes."
Immersion does mean something, however it is an opinion - and what immersion is, is often misunderstood due to its opinionated source. But no, immersion is incredibly important even to a multiplayer game and especially to an mmorpg.
If when using the vanity system your experience doesn't become disjointed and throw you out of the game experience then vanity is still immersive FOR YOU... of course that doesnt mean it will be for someone else - hence immersion and target audience is really a hand in hand discussion since you cant achieve that for everyone (and why some people can take a restricted system, others cant, and then others offer a toggle suggestion- trying to find a best common ground of different perspectives). My wife for example will not accept aliens lol, if a game has aliens she won't ever get into the game - however history and technology (void of aliens) she has no problem with... portal and assassins creed were awesome for her (she didnt get to see all the story in AC though.. ;) ). She hated mass effect just because of the aliens lol.
I just want to use DoH/DoL gear as vanity. Some of the outfits looks straight badass and away from the "oh, you have a red/white robe, you must be a WHM" kind of outfit. Diversity usually brings people together and will make the game much deeper in the community sense imo. I think ive seen a weaver's outfit(?) that strongly resembles a pirate and a miner(?) that resembles a boxer/martial artist (minus monk gear obviously)
I can't believe so many people care about playing dress up with their characters. Why can't you people just be happy with the gear you're supposed to be in and stop demanding such nonsense from SE? When they finally cave after all your crying, we are probably gonna see people tanking Titan with Weaver AF and people running around in pink and yellow Darklight sets. Yay.
NO! I don't want any restrictions. What is the point of seasonal gear if I can't get any use out of it? And all these other restrictions, you may as well not even have it. No. No restrictions!
It's a ROLE PLAYING GAME... MMORPG. That means people like to... I don't know... ROLE PLAY? There are all kinds of play styles out there... yours is 'if it has the stats I need, I don't care what it looks like'. That's fine. It works for you and you're happy. Then there are people like me... and most of them in this thread. "I need the stats because I want to play well, but I care about my CHARACTER(even have an RP wiki...) and how they look. I also enjoy a diverse looking world and everyone running around end game looking like carbon copies is boring." This, too, is a perfectly fine and valid play-style. And, frankly put, if no other MMORPGs out there had vanity slots, I might admit that it would be asking a lot to have them in. Considering almost EVERY MMORPG out right now has them in one capacity or another... the only 'problem' I see here is that SE didn't address it as part of the revamp from the beginning. They were MORE than aware that people wanted them... But I do understand the time limits and stresses they have to deal with, so I'm simply happy that we are getting them.
And, while I'm more lore-minded when it comes to appearance, I don't see how it is MY right, or YOURS, to tell people what APPEARANCE they should have when they want to play the game. As long as their stats and abilities match up to the encounter it isn't any of your business what they want to wear visually for it.
I'm sorry for digging this out from several pages back, but what do you mean by 'second starting racial gear'? As far as I was aware the only set of racial-only gear you could get was the actual starting armour all characters start with (and which can be purchased again from a specific vendor) - and just to make sure I went searching on Gamerescape and the FFXIVWiki for any information about such a hypothetical second RSE set and came up empty. So I'm sorry, but I'm not sure what you're talking about.
As for the vanity slot restrictions, I think the idea of mages not wearing heavy armour is a legacy of role-playing's pen and paper origins (ala, Dungeons and Dragons), as the late Gary Gygax basically was the one who came up with that idea of mages being restricted to not wearing heavy armour 'which could be distracting while casting', or healers 'not being able to wield edged weapons which spill blood'. It's an old RPG standby which MMOs, as the closest to a pen-and-paper RPG in style, find very hard to completely shake off, even when it's just for vanity slots and not an actual part of gameplay. Or at least, that's what it seems to me.
Restrictions to class specific gear is very reasonable. Afterall, why should gear wore by another class, worked for by another class, be crossable to another if you can't wear it. i.e. DoL to DoW classes. I'm fine with vanity slots just working for gear of the same class.
Yes i too want few restrictions.I get class restrictions by and large(as you said about casual clothes) but seasonal I WOULD like to use even if just for fun.
I agree with most ideas, however I'd like to point out one thing. Please stop putting so much emphasis on "lore reasons", because that doesn't make sense either. Even the name generator didn't get the lore-only-random-names restriction either, so as long as I see characters running around with names like Salmonella Chan or Falafel The'usurper, the whole "lore incompatibility breaks immersion" thing is kind of pointless to even be considered. I mean, really?
And actually I don't think class-restrictions make sense either, not in this game. A simple class/level check - sure, but not to be able to wear, idk, PLD armour for display, at all, with a Grimoire equipped, even though I potentially have both classes not only unlocked but perhaps finished (lv50) too, well... sounds rather silly to me.
What precisely is the point of a vanity slot in this game if it's encumbered by all the asinine restrictions like the ones outlines in this topic? We already have the ability to change gear at will to anything without our class or discipline. Limiting the gear in the vanity slot in the same manner makes it an utterly pointless addition. Not to mention this question. What's wrong with wearing a bikini into battle? What precisely is the Colosseum gear for otherwise? female warriors wearing precious little in the way of armor is pretty standard fair in fantasy settings. I didn't notice Tifa tooling up in Darklight when she fought in FFVII. If you are that concerned with the lore of the game world, then perhaps you need to spend more time objecting to Lightning showing up rather than warriors in bikinis.
Sign me up, sound like a plan to me
Nice thread necro...
The only restrictions I remember seeing were PvP and to your current class style armor.
Seasonal gear should NOT be restricted imo. What if I change into a Mi'qote with a future phantasia bottle and I want to walk around and fight in my swimsuit ? I think the toggle button is an excellent idea and is a possible solution to all restrictions really.
I see it following the "gear type" restriction to be honest, for example plate to plate (maybe in this case could have it be plate/mail into plate/mail since the graphics are a bit more forgiving) cloth to cloth leather to leather etc. I personally am not a fan of vanity slot style systems because I do not like the idea of bikini clad tanks and and mages in snowmen suits. Yoshi did hint at the vanity system being your "casual" clothes though so maybe it will be completely open and instantly equip/show your actual current gear while in combat/instances/raids and this is a system i could live with.
I do hope there are nearly no vanity restrictions. A toggle for ignoring other player's vanity, with it defaulting on in PVP, is a fine compromise.
lore is already broken its final fantasy. lore is broken from FF13 fate's in eorzea, CT broke the lore, ffxi shantotto broken the lore also.
frogot to mention there focus is fanservice that right there kills any lore.
That would completely destroy the point of a vanity system. A player can already throw on whatever they want out of combat.
Pretty much. Just making it an MMO destroyed any hope for maintaining a hardcore immersion/RP standard, barring an impossible to achieve standard of restrictions on everything from naming to in game behavior.
