LOW FPS - GTX 660 Ti I5 2500K ~13 fps in towns

I haven't read through this entire string, but I've posted separately about low FPS or FPS drops. In my situation, I suspect it was due to an overheated machine. I have two machines which are identical, one had the poor performance the other hadn't. The machine with the poor performance I turned off for ~12 hours and when we came back to the game all was well. In short, I would say that it could be a variety of factors causing it, and this game seems more sensitive to outside variables than most other MMOs

Same issue with me, might be an issue with the 660 TI itself.

I go down to 25 FPS at times in towns with no character models in view.

System:
Intel 2600k OC'ed at 4.6
SLI x2 660 TI OC
120 Gig SSD
8 gigs DDR 3

Instances and some zones I average 140 FPS, Towns 27 FPS. This is the same FPS drop with 1 card enabled or 2. There is definitally an issue but it might be with the 660 TI and this game...

Had the same issue and well I still have it if I just set max setting. On beta it was fine and on benchmark I scored 12k, but anyway if u have a new multicore cpu like an i7 if u unparck the cores u get a solid 13-15 fps increase. For me it keeps a solid min 30fps evrywhere.
It's easy to do and if u don't notice the improve is easy to remove, also 99% of the time is better have the cores unparked.

no oc, just the gpu it's oced by default

enable occlusion culling, it makes a huge difference in FPS. there's no reason to have it off since it just stops the game from rendering off-screen stuff. using low-detail models (LOD) can help a little bit too, but it makes the very far background objects a bit less detailed (like trees or buildings in the distance). foreground stuff is still the same and most people can't notice it.

like i said before i know some people have had issues with low frame rates... Lucky i haven't had that issue to the extent they have had... I have had the client randomly drop to 1 fps then just windows error out... (seems theres a memory leak in the game client.) Only happens really after hours and hours of gameplay... Other then the ocasional that happening its just been 1017 server errors we had in the beginning other then that i been able to really play the game at whatever resolution i want with the settings i want with no real actual issue.

Hey everyone, I did some digging around the Nvidia forums and stumbled upon this thread:

Looks like the reason those of us with monster systems are having issues is because DirectX 9 is a terribly outdated API (it came out in 2005) and is completely unoptimized for our multi-core, multi-thread, and/or multi-gpu systems. Funny how I remember having the same issues with Guild Wars 2 and DirectX 9 last year, despite having hardware that far exceeded the recommendations put forth by ArenaNet. There is nothing you can do at this point other than hold your breath for the DX11 graphical code to be implemented by SE sometime next year. That being said, it's not guaranteed that performance degredation will be alleviated with a switch to the DX11 API unless FFXIV was coded to support multithreaded rendering in the first place.

Same problem here, since P4. Never had such issue during P2~P3 with same rig.

That is not something any user can answer. It could be time contraints, development parallelism with the PS3 team, or compatibility considerations. In any case, the ones who suffer most are PC players, as we are constrained by the DX9 rendering pipeline.

Please read my post above. Drivers are not the issue here. While my FPS never drops below 30, its range does vary wildly; from 30FPS up to 120FPS. I believe it is like that for most PC players and DX9 is to blame, not bad drivers.

Yes, same issues but i am running an old system. Now I know the graphical requirements of this game are more than WoW, but I ran WoW with this system (i had an 8800 GTX card, which is recently replaced by a 650ti) on max settings across the board. Now, I have every setting turned off, minimal settings and still getting npc, player, etc pop in, as well as audio lag.

Interestingly enough there was one day that it ran very well. CPU usage was down and it ran pretty flawlessly. Then back to the before mentioned symptoms.

DX9 doesn't explain why some do not have issues, and some do. Also, it ran fine in the beta phases, even with the test bloat. Why would it run slower now?

Is occlusion culling enabled? Were you facing the people? What did the loads look like on your cpu and gpu? Is there HDD activity during this player loading phase? Textures might not be cached in the GPU's RAM at the time. It ran fine in beta phases because there was a fraction of the people playing compared to now. It is not a driver issue, it is a programming issue. It is FFXIV's use of DirectX 9 as a rendering pipeline. Some people say they do not have issues, what they are saying is their FPS loss is not as great as yours. Whether they've customized FFXIV's graphical settings or not, EVERYONE experiences a drop in FPS when entering an area with a large number of players. Even PS3 players do.

I dare someone to post a video of their system settings window visible while they transition from an area with few players to a crowded area. I guarantee their framerates drop. Even AMD's 13.8 beta drivers, which explicitly mention improved support for FFXIV have not prevented this drastic framerate loss for some people. This is caused by DirectX 9. It's an issue between DX9 and your CPU and the only thing you can do about it is lower the fidelity of shadows and pray the transition to the DX11 rendering API alleviates the issues. Read the links I've posted and stop stating it isn't the problem because phase 3 beta and the benchmark were fine. Both instances are COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT to the current state of the game. There isn't 60 -100 people in various sets of armor running around on your screen at the same time in either scenario.

Here's some more information regarding DX11 and it's multiple features directly integrated into the API. Realize that SE has basically tried to take features inherent in DX11 and push them through a DX9 graphical API, which is very inefficient and can impact performance on all systems across the board:

Nvidia has supported DX11 multithreaded rendering since their 270 series drivers. AMD will apparently not support it. There are very few games that support multithreaded rendering in the first place, but they also don't have the same rendering obstacles that MMOs have to deal with, so they run just fine on a single thread. If FFXIV was never written with this type of rendering in mind then performance gains from the DX11 API will be minimal. The only improvement seen will be a smaller impact in performance when shadow, lighting, and tessellated geometry are set to higher qualities.

One thing worth trying.
Is back when DX9 SMP/TSC Skew first became a thing years ago. An super effective workaround was to bind the game process to a single core.
If your playing under Windows on your PC.. Then you just fire it up.... Open your task manager.... right click on the process name and fudge with the 'Set Affinity' menu. Should be self-explanatory from there.

It's worth a quick try... Just encase it is the same errata. ^_^

Oh, and have a play with the triple buffer setting in your GPUs control panel on and off while testing the above.
It's way to technical to be explaining the details in a tiny text box.... But the optimum setting is often not predictable and system specific.
That tiny extra frame latency introduced as a result won't hurt you over the client/server network latencies your already dealing with.

I had problems and CTD's using the GF 326.80 Beta, it was horrid made all the problems worse.... But found performance slightly smoother with 326.41 Beta over latest STABLE. Only noteworthy changes between those releases are PhysX and 3DVision libraries.

I don't think you exaggerated, because it is THAT bad. It's a situation that shouldn't exist and so far can't be pinpointed, meanwhile causes half performance loss ANYTIME you pan the camera. I can't think of any other 3d program with this symptom.

If you really want to help, re read the thread and note the other posters whom clearly state answers to questions you shouldn't be asking. Nothing you or those links discuss, has any direct bearing on why there's intermittent performance loss from panning the camera - a situation that manifests itself on some machines, which are identical to one another specification wise. This would clearly suggest that it's a problem with the software itself and the Direct X9 API is perfectly fine.

We're getting entirely off track here when we should be listing clean information about the systems we use and under what environments. Maybe a new thread is needed and then will get noticed by mod/devs whom can feed it back.

So, wait, are you saying in borderless windows, the GPU stops rendering anything other than the game including the second monitor?

Cities are always heavily populated. Your graphics card is good, but even my GTX 770 Superclocked has terrible fps drops in cities. Rendering that many players with crazy amounts of shadowing will always stress processing on a second-by-second basis. That's just the nature of the beast.

Panning the camera sends a draw command to DX9 which calls the graphical information from the game engine which pulls and renders shadow and lighting data in the CPU to send back to the GPU to render on to the screen. It does this linearly through a single thread for every single model that needs to be loaded. The game was written this way. There is no fix at this time other than lowering your settings, waiting for DX11 feature support, or Yoshi-P deciding to perform a full rewrite of the game engine in a completely different graphics API that has built-in support for all of the graphical bells and whistles used including multithreaded rendering. Go away you useless FUD-spreading know-nothing. You've contributed nothing to this thread except speculation.

I would LOVE to see you create a new thread full of simple, three-line system specifications and overall whining and nagging. The developers will not respond or acknowledge it. I've posted irrefutable facts regarding the graphical limitations of DX9, cited websites from the creators of the API, and stated that FFXIV is not the only MMO to suffer from the very same issues. I don't know what you expect to happen here, but a developer coming in here and saying "There's something wrong with our graphics engine and we will completely fix it by rewriting it right away" is not going to happen. You can either be smart and accept that or continue complaining while disregarding facts and common sense regarding how PC video games actually work.

I think the general problem here is that 90% of the users on this forum have no idea what they're talking about and think just dropping some specs here and saying "me too" is going to drive Square Enix to believe everyone else knows what's wrong with their game except THEM. This thread can reach a thousand pages and that will never happen. Suck it up and wait for possible framerate improvements with their DX11 implementation.

I can confirm that nvidia lastest drivers are bad, especially when I have to disable nvidia shield and 3d stereoscopic in services so I don't crash every 3mins.

Have same card, i7, 8 gig ram, win 7.

FPS does drop a bit but not as bad as others. My problem is the game likes to occasionally freeze, go black screen, and then 10 seconds later the game comes back but at severely bad FPS.

Restarting client fixes it. Also alt tabbing to desktop (minimizing game) and going back in 10+ seconds later makes the FPS loss go away which is better than restarting thankfully.

I had shop update drivers and FPS got worse so I had to roll back to a much earlier version and performance improved. The black screen fps drop occurs regardless of drivers though and is annoying.

I haven't had a single issue, nor an fps drop of any kind. Solid 60 even in towns surrounded by everyone around the market / retainer location, or in huge Fates. I'm going to assume like someone else said that it might be more CPU intensive than anticipated, though I can't see why a second generation (sandy) i5 couldn't run it. 660 is a budget card in my opinion though, are you trying to max the game? Lower your settings to medium till areas clear up a bit, a lot of people are congested to the same areas since they are leveling together.

Funny you should mention panning the camera... Seems the FPS drop is looking to be in part to the way Windows and direct x handle frame buffering.. Eg every time you pan a camera around Your video card gets the draw request the thing is to draw the new frames whatever is in the video cards frame buffer has to be unloaded from ram... Normally this is not much of an issue... But if your trying to load X amount into a buffer thats only y wide and z deep and has x amount of accessible memory your going to take a hit..

just looked up your card the 192 bit memory interface is whats semi holding your card back that card bairly pushes enough memory pipeline to fill 2gb of memory on the card.

And i have zero issues with FPS i think the lowest it goes is about 46 etc, i was getting strange Graphic driver errors etc "NV(something) has encountered an error and been recovered" my monitor would shut down etc.., anyway i went back to rather old drivers the 306.49 version from 314.22 and i noticed a rather huge frame rate boost to the older drivers, i have no idea why but you guys could try similar?

thanks but just a fyi this is a estimate 1280X720X64X4X30(or 60FPS)=7077888000b=~7Gb@30FPS thats how much bandwidth is needed (estimated) for a video card at 30 and or 60 fps a second @ that resolution. you can take that equation and add your resolution to it to see how much bandwidth is needed @ your current card. Its pretty simple math remember the higher the res the more bandwith needed. Also thats not factoring in the special effects that require more frame-buffer memory. Its just the way windows mac os and linux handle graphics on a os and how the api handles it. Compared to a console that streams assets across the pipeline instead of loading everything into frame buffer memory. Hence why consoles can get away with having less memory (sorry that part was off topic).

The best way to get the numbers you need is to load msi afterburner and see how much vram is being used.. if the total amount of ram for your video card exceeds its hardware limit its being first swapped to normal ram and second.. If your memory interface on your video card is not capable of filling the entire amount of vram eg do to lower memory interface 192 vs 256 bit or 320 bit memory interface you need to reduce your settings.

I know this won't fix a lot of problems and I know this may be irrelevant to the drop in fps in towns, but check your power saving settings if you're having overall FPS problems. It can't hurt to make sure sometimes. I had two friends that had an FPS problem because their computers were set to "Quiet Mode" or "Office Mode" or "Low Battery Mode". Quick way to check, just in case:

Right click anywhere on your desktop and find "Preferences" or "Personalize". Locate your Screen Saver settings. Once there, find "Change power settings". Try to locate "High Performance" (it may be hidden under "Additional Plans"). Make sure the option is set there. Like I said, it won't help all of you, but maybe someone will find it useful. This is common in many laptops, and my friend even had it set low on his desktop, though it's a rare case. Hope it helps someone, at least.

I'm on an i7 3770k @ 5ghz and I have 2 GTX 780's.

The game uses 35-45% of my CPU and in Single card mode anywhere from 80-99% GPU usage, but in SLI usually only around 40-60% usage on each card and it introduces weird issues with the game going slow and fast unless I disable the second card.

The game isn't optimized at all. In open fields and dungeons I get over 200 FPS, but in towns I can go as low as 30 fps. Anyone who is telling you they get 60 FPS in towns is bluffing. Sitting still My fps could be a solid 80, but the minute I budge my camera, even in the same location it will drop to 45fps, then go right back up to 80.

I get about 23k on the benchmark and score over 200 average FPS. The benchmark is very well optimized, while the actual game has yet to implement real multi-card support.

-AMD 960T (oc'ed to 3.8ghz)
-GTX 550ti (oc'ed to 1000 core clock)
-2x4 8gb of ram.

And the game with most the settings cranked up runs very solid for me. Very consistent, and good fps. I got no complaints.

I've got to agree with Gl0ry,

Anyone who claims to be getting 60FPS in towns or under the same circumstances several people are seeing the same drop are:

1) Running at the lowest possible settings. Or lying.
2)Not monitoring their FPS and not noticing the apparent drops.
3)Needs to start mass producing their rigs to sell on ebay as FFXIV machines because you've managed to put together a rig that meshes with this game perfectly somehow. You'll make millions.

Its not just fps dropping when panning/ looking towards fates/aetherite hubs from a miles aways, even modest fps drops down to 40 FPS (Which should still look smooth) looks stuttery. I myself am using an I7 960 @ 3.6Ghz paired with a GTX 770, as well as an I7 3770K with a gtx 760 the fps drop is exactly the same when comparing the two under the same circumstances side by side.

There is a distinct difference between a smooth drop in fps down to 30 which I can acknowledge when in densely populated areas (Which is normal and tolerable), And the stuttery inconsistent frame rate mess that some of us are experiencing despite having VERY capable hardware setups.

FINALLY, people with COMMON SENSE. They are absolutely correct. This game is NOT optimized. NO ONE has consistent framerates. All the previous points I argued regarding FFXIV's use of DX9 and its unsupported graphical features ring true for every single PC player REGARDLESS OF THEIR HARDWARE. WE ALL EXPERIENCE THE SAME ISSUE AND NOT A SINGLE PERSON HAS ANSWERED MY CHALLENGE TO PROVE ME WRONG REGARDING THESE FRAMERATE DROPS IN THE RELEASE VERSION; because you CANNOT. Until the graphical features they implemented are moved from the engine to the DirectX API, performance will always be impacted in crowded areas. Even after DX11 is supported, there is no guarantee that it will make a discernible difference.

I can't really tell what this thread is about, but I have my own in-town problems.

Generally, I'm in the 40-60 range in towns with an nVidia GTX 780 at 2560x1440 resolution. But in the last couple days with the crazy gold spam, the chat box seems to do something terrible to either the game/logging or my video drivers, and it drops to around 25 fps and is very noticeable. It wouldn't even recover after shutting down the game and restarting in a new area - I literally had to reboot the machine. No crashes, but something is wrong.

Feels like an nVidia problem, but it's odd that it only appeared with the gold spam. Although I'm not convinced that SE's logging of chat and memory usage is optimal, it should have improved after a restart yet it didn't.

I don't feel like I have a handle on this problem, it's weird.

Do you feel any change after todays patch?

What os are you running? win xxx?

1 problem is it's an I5 cpu. It's like the old Celeron's their good for running 1 application.
no matter how much ram you want to stuff on your system.

First thing I would do is load the game, an alt/tab to desktop hit ctrl-alt-delete, open task manager and on the bottom right resource monitor.

What is the cpu load?
If your pegging 90+%, more or less your beating your cpu to death trying to run the game.
(note) being alt'd out to desktop an reading cpu load, that's an extra 15% tax on cpu) so subtract that from what you see.

to save cpu power play the game in full mode (NOT windowed) windowed requires more memory and more cpu resources.

Disable anti-virus while playing, or any other application that's taxing the cpu.
Edit: Can also lower resolution to save memory, higher the res more mem you chew.

win 7 up to pro is 32bit with the 3.2gb limitations on memory.
Even win 7 pro 32/64 bit, and according to microsoft still has the 3.2gb limitations.
Only win 8 64 an win 7 ultimate takes advantage of memory over 4gb.
in response to other people here. Only reason to have beyond 8gb ram in a system
is if you have a (toaster video, workstation card)and render video clips, or cad, or video editing. Windows will never use beyond 8gb for any game. (until games are written for 4-8 cores).

Even thou you may have 8-16-32gb in your machine, theirs a number interger that counts the memory, so you physically see how much you have, Does not necc mean windows can access it.

If your on an i5 laptop, the chip has integrated graphics, if you have a real v-card also make sure in bios the video section of the chip is off. Because it still can run at the same time as your video.

With all the graphics turned on high, all the "bells and whistles" and the option in setting to allow free fps, an not locked at 60/32.

Out in the woods fields etc 80-120fps. cpu load at 70%
In towns with a gob of people 30-40 cpu load at 85%
in buildings like the huts with moving doors, 10-20 (which is odd) cpu load 85%
Fates- depending on people 10-30. cpu load 80-90%
Major cities 10-20fps and 100% cpu.

This game has severe rendering issues that's mostly tamed by high end graphics cards.
(however the jet engine fans never cycle down lol)
If you have a low end system, video etc, your going to have issues.

What are you on? seriously? only the X86 is limited to 4GB... the X64 is limited from 8GB all the way to 192GB. Not sure where you are getting your info from but you appear to be misunderstanding it.

Many of us haven't used a 32bit build of windows since XP X64 released back in 2003.
And there hasn't been any hardware sold capable of gaming on that's not supported 64bit for just as long.

There's really no reason for somebody to go out and buy a 32bit OS for their gaming rig for a very long time.

Just an update, I had drops to 10 FPS with a 7950 and i5 860, it ended up being my cpu fan I just never noticed in other games because I only play League, loaded up D3 and instantly noticed bad peformance. Anyways, I added a 620 Antec liquid cooler and now I am pretty seamless, I do get FPS drops, but only to about 30-40 with everything maxxed out.

First of all, I have taken much information from this post.

My system runs the game well but also has problems with lots of rendering andit doesnt really matter whether I'm using high or low settings the drops are the same in highly crowded areas. Now dropping from steady 60 to 30 in uldah on a Friday night.

The people I talk to say 30 fps is fine and while I agree that 30 should be fin, it's just not. At 60 everything is smooth and nice once I drop to 30 it seems very stuttery and choppy by no means unplayable. I think I just have a severe case of ocd when I feel like a game can run better.

I have tried everything! 13.6,13.8,13.10 drivers all caused crashes usually once a day but I did get slight boost from 13.8. I went back to 13.4 to see of this fixes the crashes.

I have tried programs such as d3doverrider and afterburner and some helped some things some didn't. Mainly when vsync was on in game I was noticing a slight stutter in the world(no fps loss) and keeping vsync on in game and using limiter in the on screen display set to 60 seems to have fixes that for me.

Anyone else have crashes with these drivers? Like I said I don't really Remember crashing on 13.4 but I updated drivers and started using msi after burner at the same time so I don't know for sure. I just went back to 13.4 last night and havnt crashed yet. Lowest dip since reverting has been 28 and that's why panning and jumping around in uldah near Ah. If I'm still it's at about 50-60. With 13.8 (def best performing driver) lowest dip I seen was 35 but seemed like less stutter, just can't deal with the random crashes.

I'm not having any issues with fps drops system specs:

FX8350 OC 4.8ghz
8gb Gskill Ram
EVGA GTX 760 Superclocked(OC to boost to 1300mhz)
Running triple monitors in Nvidia Surround
Max settings I run 40fps and n any other settings 60fps

If running on one monitor with Max settings it's 60fps with no drops in town.

I have fps target set to 60 in evga precision.

I use H80 cooler for CPU
