I live in EU and I'm not able to use my Visa debit card either, I had to use Amazon pay which worked instantly (same card).
My address hasn't been changed since I made my account, and matches my card.
I guess with a website straight out of 1999 they wanted a payment process to match.
Posted a thread in english and jap(using google translate. Yes curse me) in the japan forum. To try and help bring attention to this problem english one was locked. Maybe the translated one will be taken seriously, not counting on it though. Wont be suprised if the lock or move it with a generic response..
It was locked simply because it was the wrong thread to post on.
Using translations such as DeepL is obvious, but it also locks you out of threads where the topic doesn't match when you post.
From JP's point of view, Japanese forums try to excessively follow the forum rules. Therefore, posts that deviate from them are disliked.
As you guys can imagine, if you don't follow the rules and manners, you will be locked up in the JP forum.
There have been several translated posts in the Graphics Update thread.
They have not been deleted because they were properly translated and in accordance with the Japanese forum rules, even though they are in breach of the terms and conditions.
Just one last word, The grass is always greener elsewhere.
JP believes that the opinions of people from overseas are adopted because of the large population of overseas players, and you guys feel that JP's views are better seen.
Unlike here, JP part is heavily moderated. At least you could've tried to post it in the correct location, using google translate would've told you more than enough what that particular section is for.

Posting anywhere you please because you're frustrated with this situation is the greatest way for JP people to dislike NA/EU even further. Screaming there will not make them react faster.
Read a post that the last time a mess like this happened took se months to correct the problem. Guess we know how long to look forward too now.
Also, Japan is currently in a holiday period called Golden Week from 29 April to 5 May.
So you have to wait until at least 6 May or later.
I think we've seen very recently with all the criticism of the benchmark in both JP and NA/EU they are paying attention to the forum, and stuff like word filters for muting venue and RMT spam are - from what I hear - a reaction to mostly NA complaints, because it's barely existing in JP. They do read things. There were also multiple posts in the tech support forum which then where moves by mods to different categories. However, the feedback from the forum etc. is usually handled more from people on the developing end of game production, or maybe a bit inbetween when it comes to community management and promo. Billing and account management is entirely a publisher thing and I can imagine Square Enix as publishing company has different guidelines for communicating with the public. It's still good to make a lot of noise, the more people are aware of this the better, makes it harder to sweep it under the rug, but considering this issue exists on an entirely different level/department, I don't think we should expect a post on the forum or the lodestone within days. Nor is this comparable to feedback or a lack of feedback for complaints when it comes to other issues regarding the game itself.
That's messed up... Especially since their announcement says you're meant to be able to pay with Visa.
What a broken system they've introduced on top of the idiocy of people not being allowed to change their account's region to match where they currently live.
As these payment issues do not happen in Japan, perhaps posting on Japanese forums would not be of much interest.
Generally when something like this happens, people's perception regarding SE is "favoritism" towards its JP playerbase. Because they don't face these issues, and it has not been addressed yet (not even a moderator post or anything), people become very skeptical and frustrated, feeling abandoned and screaming into the void.
Yes, SE is a Japanese company and of course it's normal they seem to have more resources towards its own playerbase and JP forums, however ultimately this creates a gap in trust. You can look closely at English forums and see for yourself how there's almost zero moderation.
I contacted support last week after seeing that they would be asking people to reconfirm their residential address.
I thought that surely they would have considered the old policy of not allowing people to change their country of residence if they were asking people to reconfirm their addresses...
So I asked if I could change my country of residence (not even for the first time) as I have moved countries twice since opening my account a decade ago and pointed out the information tied to my account is no longer accurate..
I wasn't even looking to change regions but I did also ask if I could change my account from being charged in £GBP to €EUR seeing as the EU accounts use either currency.
This was the reply I received:
This is unfortunately just not good enough for an international game company in 2024.Quote:
Thank you for contacting the Square Enix Support Centre.
We are sorry that the information recorded on your SQUARE ENIX ID is not accurate.
Unfortunately, the country, region and payment currency of an account cannot be changed after registration has completed. We apologise for any inconvenience this causes.
I think they might even be in violation of EU GDPR laws that states you have the "Right to Rectification" of inaccurate personal information.
I hope Square communicates something on this issue soon as it will only negatively impact the game and the community.
Speaking personally, I don't know what SE wants to do with the forum.
A long time ago, the forums were the only place developers looked, but now they say they also look at X or 5ch etc., in addition to the forums. (as yoshida said in PLL).
And obviously SE moderators look as if they are not doing their job when it is a non-Japanese forum.
This may sound strange, but I think it would be better to post on this subject in a Japanese forum, translated into Japanese.
I think there's something potentially important to keep in mind regarding this payment processor mess.
Currently, lots of players, SEA or otherwise, are still grandfathered into having their cards accepted because they're on a recurring sub and haven't modified it. If that's you, I wonder if it would be prudent to proactively evacuate all items your 3rd and onwards retainers are holding onto.
Consider a scenario where you modify your sub and find you're no longer allowed to pay for it. Once that sub lapses, your retainers will go poof as well because they are renewed along your sub. Except in this scenario, you may be literally unable to regain access to those retainers and any items they were holding get locked away forever in a really tragic bureaucratic limbo.
Before anyone says crysta/paypal, note that some countries like Australia do not have access to the crysta system at all due to it not being supported in their country. Or you may be eligible but unable to purchase it due to a similar payment processor hiccup. In the former case, clicking any link to buy crysta from the accounts website will throw up an error 11000. As another result of being unable to change your country, you can essentially brick your account out of being able to access systems like these at the registration stage.
I'm certain many have had this idea cross their minds, but like myself, I'd personally avoid doing that because I'm well aware how strictly do JP follow the rules, and that's fine. But an issue such as this, where would you even post it? It's certainly not a technical issue nor bug report, the only place would be General Discussion (like here). Aside from that, machine translation such as Google or DeepL aren't perfect, though the latter may have better accuracy. I'm not sure what's people's perception there when someone uses broken Japanese to post on Japanese forums.
It's very difficult to even attempt have SE look at their Western playerbase screaming for help while drowning in problems. When NA/EU suffered high ping issues, Yoshida himself said it's fine because they don't see those issues (Japanese servers/data centers), whereas people struggled to play the game they're paying for. West got completely ignored because JP wasn't affected, so it's certainly going to be a similar situation here.
Looking at the current mess again, I get the impression that SE is not an international company.
I understand the reasons for increasing payment security, but then there are too many problems that need to be solved that should be done at the same time.
They should not have proceeded with this without dealing with cross-border change of address and dealing with countries that do not support them.
In this case, General Discussion is a fine.
From a Japanese point of view, any translator will look strange, but it is still recommended to use DeepL because of its good accuracy.
However, FF14 words need to be spelt out on their own by looking at the official FF14 page. For example, even if you translate glamour using Google or deepl, It will never be translated into Japanese as it is a completely different word in Japanese.
People on Japanese forums don't like posts from foreign countries very much. (To put it mildly.)
Not because of anything unpleasant in the forums, but because they don't have a very good impression in game.
I do find it very difficult for developers to recognise problems that are only happening in regions outside Japan.
The function to remove players from the house, which was announced at the recent PLL, was also something that was much requested in Japan forum last year.
I think it doesn't make sense to split the forum by region and language at this time
Does your high ping mean this?

Been at work all day. Still not fixed. 8 Days I can't give you money. I'm from NA, too, fyi.
This is the only response you will get from support.

Its bogus. It will not fix /anything/ at all.
What happens when you write back you did all of this and nothing worked? Do they send this again or are they ghosting you?
Certainly would be interesting if someone from EU would go to the court due to GDPR violations, maybe it would be an appropriate kick in the but to get SE's system out of the 1990s... But I suppose this would cost a lot of money and SE has probably some good lawyers to block this off. :(
My visa debit card is not working on Mogstation and Paypal is the only payment method that worked for me. VISA is one of the valid methods of payment in the States so I don't understand why is it being blocked here when it shouldn't.
I don't think we'll hear about this issue until Golden Week is over in Japan. I understand they are a Japanese company, but the lack of communication to their Western audience is abysmal. Never seen a company make it so hard to do a simple payment.
SE: We will fix the payment system. Please look forward too it.

Saaaame, almost word for word short of the intro. (https://imgur.com/a/PYAh0Dp) I love how the solution is 'do these standard IT troubleshooting things (with the addition of using Microsoft Edge. I'm not putting that on my system to try this) and if that doesn't work too bad, read this post about the payment change and try a different form of payment'.
I am able to get it to work with AmazonPay (registered to the same Visa Debit card that THEIR system is incapable of taking apparently). What a thing to mess up and probably cost them subscriptions going into the expansion. /shrug
I've seen that thread regarding the benchmark graphics update and how one of our fellow forum posters went there and used machine translation to post in Japanese. A response was rather harsh with the mentality of "if they can't speak Japanese then they can't be here!!!" even though it was posted with broken Japanese. In a way it becomes hypocritical, because in the future, that same person may need to use Google/DeepL to translate to English, but no one's going to judge them for that. We in the West have multiple languages and many speak more than one, so broken English will be fine because it will still be understood.
On the bright side, I did see quite a lot defend the situation and said it's perfectly fine as long as it's understood. Perhaps that one angry person has never spoken to a foreigner before? Or a foreigner trying to learn Japanese? Who knows.
I believe this is the post, yes. The issue still happened a lot last year, however thankfully there was an actual response from SE. Now, when I read it the first time, I've seen 2 particular things in that statement that bothered me a lot.Quote:

1. "Since around the release of Patch 6.1, we have been receiving reports from players in Japan and other parts of the world stating that they have been experiencing network-related issues, such as a few seconds of network loss, or lag."
Okay, it starts good, it mentions "other parts of the world", so I assumed Yoshida knows issue isn't localized to Japan. And then it goes:
2. Based on the information that most of the recent reports are specifically coming from Japan, while others are playing without issue, the network-related issues may be due to the network routing. In the past month, some of the internet service providers (ISP) in Japan have been reporting issues due to high network concentration or trouble related to construction.
Emphasis mine. NA/EU players have been complaining about the lag for months, yet it had to have very small few JP playerbase mention this in order for Yoshida make this Lodestone post. This is why West is very well aware Yoshida plays favorites and how SE does indeed ignore half its playerbase from half the globe because "JP's fine lol"
That's why some of us know that posting in JP forums will get SE's attention. I leave you with this.

We may be delusional, but sometimes it's worth the climb while such people get treated like kings.
sometimes, these app translators, do not faitfully translate the intent properly. So take it with a grain of salt.
It might say delusional but it may actually be something along the lines of people coming from NA an EU airing their concerns to JP in hopes to be heard.
I agree. The only issue i encounter when i attempt to post over the JP forum is that I have to put in the effort to make my statements as formal as possible, with no slang/sarcasm/idioms, so i have a better chance of getting the point across without the translations messing it up.
It would be cool if someone who wouldn't need machine translation could write into the Japanese forum on behalf of the many many players in SEA, SA and other countries with this issue...? Considering some people here seem to be well versed in the culture of the Japanese part of this forum, I'm sure at least one or two could speak up in Japanese the usual way instead of leaving the players affected struggeling alone and getting belittled or attacked over there if they utilize the only means they have at their disposal. (= Google translate/Deepl) Just saying.
