The VA is a woman. You shouldn't refer to them as "he".

Having lived in the Los Angeles metro area my entire life, I see people slip in and out of different accents all the time because the region is so ethnically diverse. It can be difficult not to fall into a similar cadence as your neighbors.

We've heard maybe 7 minutes of voiced dialogue so far. Personally I'm fine with the VA's work. A little rough but to be expected when both the VA and the character are new.

2.0 Yda was far, far worse.

Pikeville and Paducah are about as far apart as Glasgow and London, and there's decidedly a difference in accent and speech pattern between them, and North of Florence is practically Cincinnati. It is absolutely disingenuous to say there's one singular accent for the state. The limestone doesn't give us all one singular one. I hear several on the regular here in CKY.

I'm also from Kentucky, and I have issues with Wuk Lamat's voice due to my own personal issues as I've lined out in another thread.

Our state isn't a monolith. We're small, but what one person experiences in Louisville isn't going to be a blanket experience for everybody else in the state. Where I'm from, there's a huge Latino presence, and a surprising amount of a lot of other cultures. I hear an insane amount of different accents living here, more than I've heard in other states to be honest.

The point I think others are trying to make is that trying to pin down Sena's awkward accent on "she's from Kentucky" is ridiculous. The accent is, in my opinion, the fault of the voice director trying to push the VA too far or just giving bad direction in general.

Hien too. His accent is a bit weird, especially the way he pronounces some of the names. it's always taken me out of it when he pronounces Yugiri's name. Like, he puts too much emphasis on the Yuu part, dragging it too long. It doesn't sound natural. No rage threads tho.

Hien's VA is Japanese, but raised in the UK, which really just reduces this "argument" even further, since it mirror's Wuk Lamat's VA's position exactly. Latina, raised in the US.

I enjoy her, her personality and liked the VA performance well enough as it falls perfectly in-line with the standard XIV has.

But, at the same time, criticism that's written like some kid throwing a tantrum isn't particularly fruitful and informs me far more about where the critiques are coming from, which is nowhere worthwhile.

You've nailed the issue here exactly.

A lot of the "criticism" is "THE GAME IS DEAD, THIS IS THE WORST CHARACTER EVER, THE VA SHOULD BE ASHAMED, YOSHI P HAS FORSAKEN US" and it's just absurd to feel THIS strongly about a character who is in a handful of cutscenes and that we've known for an hour AT MOST.

AT WORST, people who are upset with Wuk Lamat's performance should be skeptical.

Any emotion beyond that isn't only absurd, it's unhealthy and it speaks towards a problematic obsession with the game.

Fair shout to those who are criticizing like adults that are capable of rational thought. They don't seem to be on this forum, though.

My dude, I dated a Korean for 7 years who spoke four languages, including Japanese. Who are you to say I don't speak Japanese? And that's not even the point. The point is that there unjust and immoral double standards being applied here. And even further to the point, it's not even just her VA is bad, it's her entire character, who and what she represents. Her personality, how out of place she looks (not even culturewise just graphically wise), her face doesn't look anything like any other race in FFXIV, much less male Hrothgars. She looks very similar to all that creepy AI art, completely out of place with the rest of the game.

There are some people who are noting the overall lower quality of the voice acting in the entire patch which I think is valid and should be pointed out so that we can hopefully see some improvement in the new expansion. But comments like this are definitely in the minority and are very quickly drowned out by extremely hateful and misplaced comments which is a shame.

I'll add this, to the idea of criticism:

To be completely frank, I noticed absolutely no difference in quality. But, I don't really have an example people would point to when comparing and contrasting the different audio quality? But, even then, that'd be more of a criticism with regards to their equipment. Same with people who dislike the character's personality, or things the character says, as those are from the writing team. When it comes to pacing, when it comes to the way things are enunciated, there's a large factor of the voice director's contribution and direction to, also, consider.

There's the basic criticisms I can understand, but could be applied to every performance in the game (e.g: "Says a word weird to me" - which, to be fair, isn't a valid criticism - there's no substance there. Where did it come up? What was off about it? What separates it so much by comparison to other performances? etc... etc...). And I can understand, even, a "sounds off" kind of statement, but again, it's not really valid criticism - there's, again, just a basic thing that is easily refuted with someone simply disagreeing with the statement. There's nothing concrete to hold onto, or to look at, no means of actual pathway to an improvement over what may just come down to a personal taste that, ultimately, doesn't have much bearing when speaking about an objective quality.

So, I do agree that no one is "above" criticism. I just think a lot of people on this forum are terrible at understanding what criticism actually is, and there is a layer where I don't think anyone really understands the mechanics of VA performance, which if we're actually talking about criticism, is generally important to know something about when homing directly in on the individual's performance. Even, simply, saying that one felt a line delivered too deadpan, or emotionally inconsistent, and then providing the example and why, is something anyone here can do, but choose not to for the most part.

Instead, criticism - at least, online - has devolved to people who think they know a lot about something, but know nothing about it and are unable to accurately articulate their issue in a manner where other people can take a look at the issue. It's a lot of pots and pans banging together to make a lot of noise, a lot of undeserved arrogance and snark, which is utterly useless to anyone - even someone genuinely looking for criticism. To be honest, if I was the performer, I'd throw the majority of the forum opinions in the bin as it's just a lot of useless yelling that's ultimately not productive, nor worth, anyone's time to sift through.

And, if I was a VA, I'd look to other VA's for actual feedback. Not someone typing like they don't know how to handle a human interaction in the real world.

But that's my two cents, fully, mostly about the nature of criticism as more of pseudo-intellectual mud-wrestling with who can insult whoever the most, or who can virtue signal the hardest, where there's really no care about the subject at hand on any real level.

Saying a latina woman represents Kentucky well is like saying a White Kentuckian who moved to Japan and speaks Japanese represents Japan well. It makes no sense and its quite insulting. I liked the 2.0 cast. Cid in particular was one of my favorite VAs: he did the WoL in Dissidia. This is genuine criticism, and whatever you're defining as "good faith" is wrong. I have every right to criticize both the subject and the direction of a game that I love(d) and want to see it return to a state of improvement, not decline.

Yes, this exactly. So many complaints in these threads of people being like "I @'d her on Twitter to criticize her and she blocked me, she's so full of herself, ugh!" and it baffles me that people can't see the fault in their own actions in this.

She is a professional voice actor with actual representation from a professional agency who handles these things. She has a coach. She has a director. She has guidance. She has the people who are there to criticize her already.

Just because you CAN tag a total stranger unprovoked on Twitter and try to give professional advice on how to do their job, as an unprofessional, doesn't mean you should. In fact, you shouldn't. It's so absurd this even needs to be said. It's annoying, it's cringe, it's immature, and it just tells me you don't know how to interact with other adults in the real world. I can only assume these people don't have actual careers of their own, because they have no grasp of the concept of professional courtesy.

You are not a professional voice actor. Stop offering "advice." And even if you were, you are not this person's acquaintance. You have no right to approach them and tell them what to do. And they have every right to block you for whatever reason they want.

I agree. A lot of these threads are quite bad, as are a number of the posts in them (and the tags omg), and it's quite clear when somebody is making a comment out of hatred and not out of genuine desire to see an improvement.

All that me and a few others around here are asking for is an improvement to the voice direction. We don't want to see Sena fired, we don't think we deserves any of the hatred she's getting, we just felt as though something was off *as a whole* and we wanted to state how we felt about it. But we're being dragged down with that torrent of unfounded, hateful, and pointless vitriol you've pointed out and it just sucks. I honestly thought there would be a more balanced discussion but I guess that goes to show how little I use the forums here.

I don't know if that's true, when they changed voice actors there wasn't any reason given, and the general assumption was that it was either a union thing or that SE wanted to move their voice acting to Europe. I don't think anyone thought it was because SE listened to criticism.

I think it was more that the signature was definitely her fathers, not it looked like her fathers. So she believed he may have dictated it. She ruled out it being a forgery because of the signature.

Firstly, thank you for a nicely thought out response, even if I had to cut out a lot of it to fit in a response. This is the kind of thing I was hoping to see here so I really appreciate it.

There are actually a few people talking about this but they're completely buried in mountains of hatred right now. A number of people have noticed how strange a few characters sounded in the new patch, even performances from VAs that are highly regarded here such as G'raha and Krile. Personally I think this is valid criticism, especially those who are bringing up other factors such as direction and issues with VAs working remotely. I would like to see these points brought up more often because I think that's a far more balanced discussion as opposed to pinning the entirety of the blame on a single VA.

I understand this subject is maybe ultimately subjective in the end as you personally seemed to hear nothing wrong, but I still see value in people talking about these things as long as they are civil about it, which unfortunately is not really happening in the majority of these threads, which is why I'm so disappointed.

I agree completely. It's not her fault and I feel awful that she's getting so much hate. But I do hope that the team that was directing her is at least taking note, because I feel like they are to blame for a lot of this if they are able to make even long-time characters sound (to me) tired and lifeless. That, at least for me, is why I came to the forums - because I assume there is some chance that criticism may be relayed to the development team. Though I realize how unlikely that is. The last time I was here was to complain about Astrologian changes and clearly nothing happened. So I assume nothing will happen here, either. But I personally just couldn't shake the fact that something was off throughout this entire patch and I was thankful to see a few genuine people saying something similar, even if they are in the minority.

I had my own reasons for not liking the English vocals for this patch, but I do not want to be correlated to those who are just spewing hatred. Any adult conversation that could have been had surrounding this subject is just gone thanks to people like that, so I'll probably be heading off the forum soon for another years long hiatus lol.

And it did unfortunately take this long for my idealistic, clueless self to notice this. I saw how vile things were and still thought I could try and give my honest thoughts. I "fell for the bait" or whatever by wanting to have an adult conversation about an issue I had in a game I've loved for years.

I haven't been on this forum in years and I am very disappointed by it, but I am trying not to bring my opinion on the community as a whole down. I met some very lovely people at Fanfest and I want to see them as more emblematic of the community as opposed to a lot of the people I've seen in these threads.

I agree the title for this thread is ridiculous. Saying that a character that has been in the game for less than a full patch is now the worst character ever is insane. As a character, Wuk Lamat isn't even that bad. She's just ARR Yda, basically. I have reinstated my personal criticism many times at this point but I actually enjoy the character herself so far. I still have hope for the game and even its community - I imagine these threads will die down in time. It's just a shame they were so hateful.

a short time ago the same people were complaining that Zero was the worst character in the game. I mean, its all opinion and really, little else.

some posters thrive on hate and drama, it what gets them up in the morning I suppose. sad truth is, humans be like that.

Wuk explains they have their own language so it was dictated, presumably to a translator, and then signed. That's what happened per the dialogue. If it wasn't translated, Krile (or, in the past her grandfather) wouldn't be able to read it. The idea it's a trap for Krile or WoL makes no sense. Even if it was a trap, the trap would now be outdated. If it's a fake letter, it serves no purpose. I'm 99% certain the point of this scene is to get you thinking about who was involved with the letter.
