No! You're not allowed to be mad at all, please delete any and all criticism and disappointment you've expressed in this thread, or anywhere! -waves around paladin falchion threateningly-
I wonder what this means for the seasonal events. All Saints' Wake was pushed back to make way for Endwalker, which has now moved.
I hope we won't be trying to have a serious conversation in Limsa with all the cartoony seasonal decorations around.
Pretty sure most of the grievances come from the announcement coming so close to the wire, thereby making it far harder to rearrange than if the announcement had been made sooner. Speaking for myself here, I would be less bothered by this entire thing had this announcement been made a bit sooner. Letting your boss know that you need to reschedule time off is far easier when you give them a more advanced notice. A month, for example, is usually better than two weeks… Two weeks is cutting it extremely close. I have to hope that my boss will just let me push the time off back; and apologize profusely for the short notice. And that may still not work, which is saddening. I’m passionate about this game, and I wanted to enjoy Early Access like I’ve done for the last expansions (save ARR relaunch and HW, since I started in HW). Call it a fun little “tradition” I’ve enjoyed with my friends. We played together for SB early access and ShB early access, and all of us were able to get the time off for EW early access. And with a lot of ease, too. This throws a wrench into that, so we’re, of course, upset by it.
Of course I don’t mind, if anything it’s a pleasant surprise.
But I swear reaper and sage Better a much better weapon variety than GNB and DNC did because they didn’t even get 4 lords stuff at base 60 nor 80% of the raid and tome stuff. I wanna glam dammit
Hot take, I'd take a flawed experience over a delay on such short notice.
The thought that all my friends and I are probably gonna be out of sync with each other is heartbreaking :(
I love that launchday rush, waking up before the sun rises, exploring with everyone and discovering new things together. I'm worried that we're not going to be able to talk to each other much because we will all be at different spoiler levels.
Look, I have some amount of sympathy for those who booked vacation days because they're so excited for Endwalker and want to be able to dive in right away. I probably would be annoyed too if I were in your shoes. But I can't help but think that this is perhaps the most "First World Problems" thing to be upset about I've ever heard.

I still have PTSD from Raubahn EX. Some scars never heal...
Launch dates are VERY important. something like reapers weapon clipping is a future patch, 6.01... something delaying launch is definitely major. you ALWAYS discuss reducing QA windows, but if QA said they cant test other things they have to ensure are working, launch is delayed.
Throws my plans out since the 3rd I have a family member having a hip replacement and that week or two I be taking care of them. Was hoping to get two weeks before the surgery to level reaper and smn plus enjoy the story. *sigh* It is what it is I guess.
Tbh or any MMO lol.
I deliberately waited with WoW Classic because of how bad I knew it was going to be and I was right.
In all honesty if I was taking time off work to play a MMO I'd probably do it a while after launch at least a couple of days.
Imagine taking time off from work to play WoW Classic at launch, oof.
What a waste of vacation time xD.
Or Cyberpunk. Or New World. :p
In fairness to ARR they lowered their expectations as far as the traffic for the game. Then it just...exploded, and they had to add servers on the fly. Stormblood's initial mess up was the result of poor planning in quest design.
rather have new unbroken content.
players these days seem too used to substandard product launches. it great that expectations are that low, but I appreciate the quest for a quality product AT release.
disappointed, sure, upset, no. and before the whiners start in on not having a horse in the race, I took from the 19th to the 26th off work. can I rebook, who knows, it happens, I am adult enough to get over it and move on with life. if you want to whine about it, better buy some cheese since its going to happen whether we like it or not.
Stop taking PTO for Video Games. It really sickens me to hear or see Yoshi-P and the dev crew cry. People in this game, are imo toxic for them as developers.. Idolize developers as some sort of God. Stop it. They are human beings. Software Development especially for MMO's is more than likely 10x harder than any job that anyone here in this thread is working.
They are human beings. Stop being upset that they didn't release on the 19th/23rd. It sucks that it might screw up your plans. BUTS THATS ON YOU. Not them. Take a step back and put yourself in their shoes for once. Guaranteed you would see things very differently.
People should know by now. Especially during/after Covid. With layoffs, Delays should be expected.
I 100% know how you feel. My friends and I are all in voice right now just praying to the Twelve that we’ll be able to get our time off all rearranged so that we can have our fun together. But it’s so uncertain and most of us can’t even do anything about it until Monday since we don’t work weekends. My department isn’t even in the office on weekends (and my boss had to go to TX for a family thing so she’s unreachable right now).
We’ve done the last two expansions together and always had so much excitement when it came to discovering everything and doing the MSQ (never forget our simultaneous reactions to *that cutscene from Alisaie’s MSQ branch in Amh Araeng*). Now we’re just worried we won’t get to do that again, and it’s just really disheartening. :( Fingers crossed we’ll all get lucky… Same for you and your friends! I really hope everything is able to be worked out for you guys.
I feel bad for myself and my fellow friends who pulled overtime for several months to secure a week off for the launch. This is a quality control thing, and it is important for the team to make sure the content we get is quality and actually ready to ship, but on the other hand it is a very last minute change.
Hell, my week off isn't even paid. Just like many others, it just means I won't be fired for taking that block of time off. So, while I am not kicking a fuss because it completely valid for them to push it back, it doesn't suck any less. I'll use that week off to farm more Eden, at least!
Tbh I was getting stressed out because I didn't think I'd finish NG+ in time.
But now I'll finish it np so works for me :P.
Can even finish the raid NG+ story too I want it all to be fresh in my mind when the game launches.
If you took time off maybe consider refreshing yourself on the story during that time off if you can't change.
I understand that this is not the norm for FFXIV. They must’ve had a very important reason for the delay. So I’m not mad, just disappointed.
I applied for 2 weeks off since July, and just last week my boss asked me to confirm it and I did :( Will be very difficult for me to reschedule my time off.
Even assuming devil's advocate that some people couldn't schedule so close, it's still better than the position people are in now where they have PTO/Holiday days thrown away for literally nothing. Advice notice at least gives people more options. Furthermore, they could more easily be avoided if they announced such a delay before the Live Letter, citing how they'll go into more detail during the broadcast.
Basically, there were better ways to handle this to limit the amount of people whose plans were ruined due to scheduling conflicts.
Well it sucks, but what are you gonna do? We'll just have to wait some more.
On the bright side...extended moogle event!
Wish they'd made this decision sooner so I could have canceled my time off requests and pushed them back. I'm going to be having a fun conversation with my boss on Monday. :(
I’m sorry, but you have no right to tell me how to spend my vacation time that I earn through my hard work. Nor do you have any right to tell me that I can’t be upset or disappointed by the delay, or worried about if I’ll be able to shift my time off around to enjoy something I’ve been looking forward to for a while now.
Everyone is aware that the development team are human beings. But you know what? So are the players. Let them be upset if they want to be. You can’t tell them to not be.
With all due respect, please back off, and go take a seat. Let people be upset. Let them be mad. Stop telling them how they are supposed to feel when the plans they had made and were looking forward to fell through/are in jeopardy.
Before the delay, it came out during Black Friday week. I wouldn't have been able to take off time regardless. Is it upsetting. Absolutely. But it is. What it is. The game will still be there when i get home.
2nd. You can still be on the same level, and point in story level, if you play with your friends. If you've already coordinated to play on launch day, you can coordinate too after.
With all due respect though. Look at it from their shoes. Put yourself in the shoes of a game developer/producer just once, if you knew anything of game dev you would see how incredibly difficult it is, especially with layoffs, and so much more.
Im not telling people how to feel, but they should atleast be realistic. I can't think of any MMO or patch in recent time that has come out on time.
People in this game are toxic. But seriously please explain to how no one could have atleast expected a delay to come to the game.
And no. People are not aware that the developer teams are human. This thread proves it. If they did. This thread wouldnt exist. People would've already done as is. As someone who works in software, trust me. The extra time they need to get this out, is very much needed.
A 40 hour work week? To them would be a blessing for them. 100%
Well.. Sigh what a waste of requested time off.
Oh what a sad day. 20 work days hrrrr. Glad i didn't take any time off and saved my precious days
So now that expansion has been delayed, can we get Dragonsong Ultimate? Since, you know, that was the trade off it was cancelled for?
ill take time off for what ever i want its really annoying when people give off excuses like "for developer" and throw out word Toxic just to justify themself in a controversial topic
yes he apologized, yes it sucks whats been happening in the world right now and ofc the dev team are humans as well and i do feel bad that they now have to work during there new years time
but this news should have come much earlier
I don't exactly see what being upset is going to accomplish other than distressing the devs and making them feel worse.
It's just kinda unnecessary imo, everyone knows it's disappointing but there is no need to make it worse.
You probably have a series of steps to perform when treating water. It's straight forward? No.
Game Development/Software Development is completely different, the bigger your game, the greater possibility of bugs and other things that can be introduced that would ruin the game for people. Honestly, people wouldn't get mad. Developing a game through covid while possible, will still produce more issues.
Is it their right? Sure. But should they? No. Development for games is not easy. Especially a GAME AS BIG AS FF14 do you realize how much negative public backlash they would get if they released a broken game. And judging by some of these threads, in this game. It not exactly good for their own mental health.
Id like to know the last time these guys had a 40 hour week. I bet there estimate of November 19th was already calculating way more time than most people put in during an average work week. So cut them some slack.
Game dev isnt a series of steps you follow, then bada bing bada boom. Job done. Release. No. It's constantly changing.
