Crashing to desktop without any sort of Error or warning.
Tried to reinstall. Not sure if it has anything to do with recent graphics drivers or what.
Having the same problem here, I've tried a fresh reinstall of the game and my GPU drivers, as well as some of the suggested fixes without any luck.
Game just randomly freezes for 1-2 seconds before crashing to desktop without any error messages.
Ryzen 7 1700
RX 480
Nothing is overclocked on my system.
UPDATE: I tried disabling the AMD overlay, and this time I actually got an error message when the game randomly crashed!

Bump until they address this issue. I want Yoshi P to mention this dammit!!! I know, wishful thinking!!!
Also ran memtest86 with no errors after 1 pass.
sigh... anyone here that havent played ffxiv for days and still viewing this thread hoping theres a solution or any sort of hope...?
"Looks like my GPU is having a major issue but I'll just blame SE anyway"
That unexpected error lists nothing but ATI DLL, Kernel DLL and ntdll, there isn't a single ffxiv_dx11.exe. With that game screenshot, we have telltale signs that this is a problem with your hardware, not the game. Either your driver is having compatibility issues (can try a different driver version) or your GPU is simply dying.
In general, if the error has anything ati or nvw, it means your GPU ran into an issue and chances are fresh installing the driver will sort it out. The error doesn't tell exactly what happened, since we can't debug the game like the devs can, but it does point to components that caused the crash. If the error only has ffxiv_dx11.exe, ???, kernel and ntdll lines, then we most likely have a game issue (if you are to report it, your system info and what you were doing are necessary information, the numbers after + don't actually help the devs at all because the issue did not occur on their machine, they only know the game crashed but not why).
"they only know the game crashed but not why"
gosh, that must be so frustrating for them
I'll bump for the people that are experiencing this since 5.25 but aren't that active on the forums. Talking about the crashing to desktop without errors.
I know 11 people who have had it since 5.25
5.2 wasn't the problem until 5.25 came along.
i am also getting these crashes no point in post my specs considering ill just get the same generic reply. keep up the good fight. I am seriously considering unsubbing i am rather new player so im not that invested.
Yup... that explains a lot Sherlock.. a lot people started threads, with hardware info before... and no matter how powerful is the gpu, the crashes comes. I've seen many powerful hardwares having the issues, even me, I can play games with much more requirements than FFXIV and I don't have problems... RE2 Remake for example.
And plus, people with less hardware can play with normally the game... it's just really hardware? I don't think so.
Reinstalled for the 8 free days promo; after the last free time fiasco : https://i.imgur.com/6qAPD9O.png
just crash after crash. I've got it where it pops up a crash message and music stops playing, but the game keeps running, but assets start failing to load until I get stuck. So the crash for me is on a background thread of some kind?
I want to pay SE to play, I'm a big fan, I've paid for SIX copies of FF7 so far, FF6 soundtrack on import CDs, Black Mages CD, last month played 3,4, and started 5 again... but I'm not gonna pay for a game that doesn't work.
Impossible to tell. System info + events before the crash are still the best way forward.
And since some ppl above are not taking it properly, let's try this again.
When the game crashes, most of the time you will see a dialog popup with "An unexpected error has occurred. Exiting FINAL FANTASY XIV." followed by a timestamp. This is followed by the exes and libraries where the error occurred. ffxiv_dx11.exe (or ffxiv_dx9.exe, if you are playing DX9 version) is the game executable. ntdll.dll and kernel32.dll are windows components and these don't really point to anything relevant in player troubleshooting.
Now, atidxx64.dll is a component of the ATI graphics driver and there are multiple variations for Nvidia, but they all start with nvw and these all point to a problem with the graphics driver, which could also indicate a damaged GPU and given the artifacting on the earlier quoted post's screenshot, BSOD and the lack of any ffxiv_dx11.exes in the error prompt, we can quite safely say this is a hardware problem.
Now, how many error reports here show any ati or nvidia components in the error prompt? Not that many. So, no, I'm not saying you all have hardware issues, but this one player I quoted quite surely does.
Why a report needs more than just the error prompt? Because they only say which component and at which memory address the error occured in. Memory addresses are not static and change every time you restart the game. Without knowing the system information and the event prior to the crash, the devs have no idea where to even look at. The memory address information is only useful if you also have the crash dump, which the retail client does not provide in any useful form. However, if the devs are able to reproduce the crash, they can get a useful crash dump and find out why the crash happened and fix it.
In reference to the crashes w/ no errors (@cult, @RaphaelTheDragon) ;
Can someone explain to me how an application is crashing without any logs being generated? I'm still unable to wrap my head around that because, how are we supposed to effectively trouble-shoot this issue without any solid information as to where the problem originates?
In addition to that, when people are suggesting fixes, some of them have seemed to be unrelated (i.e. Dynratygus' response to @cult's thread : https://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/...as-weeks-go-by). In this case, how does changing Internet Options settings affect these crashes in FFXIV? I'm not being sarcastic, I genuinely want to know.
Me too! Have been playing for 2 months and game crashed after I reached Stormblood. When I tried logging in using DirectX 11, the game just shuts itself without any error message :/
This has been an ongoing problem since Directx11 was implemented. For the longest time I was crashing hourly. The only way I could eliminate it was to run FFXIV on 1 PC and everything else on another PC. This told me that there is a comparability with the game as it was the only process to crash. I tried to get help through the tech forums multiple times to no avail. I upgraded my PC 6 months ago and run everything on one now with only an occasional crash. As I am 73 and a shut in I always get PCs with the latest technology. Most players cannot afford to spend top dollar for top gear. This was supposed to be eliminated with ARR. Below is my sys info for reference

problem with V1.0. ARR was supposed to eliminate this. Hope this information helps.
I'm having that same issue since about 2 months ago. With DX11, crashes showing the 11000002 error. I reinstalled Windows, reinstalled the game, updated Windows, etc. Nothing solved this. I tried to play with DX9, and doesn't crash, but every five minutes or when I'm fighting boss in a duty, the screen blinks in White and stays black for around five to tem seconds.

So I figured I'd parse through this thread along with the Technical Support section to find any common themes with the hardware combination this issue is affecting ;
This is a small sample size from the people who've explicitly stated their computer information.Code:1) Intel i5-3570K / GTX 970
2) Ryzen 1800X / GTX 1080 Ti
3) Ryzen 1600 / GTX 1060
4) Ryzen 1700X / RX 5700X
5) Ryzen 1500X / RX 480
6) Ryzen 1700 / RX 480

17) Ryzen 1700X / GTX 1060
18) Ryzen 1600 / GTX 1080 Ti
19) Ryzen 1700 X / RX Vega 64
20) Intel i5-8600 / GTX 1060
Totals from the combinations ;
Even with this tiny sample size, we can see this doesn't only affect one specific CPU & GPU combination (though first generation Ryzen CPU's account for 14 of the 20 computers). There are many other threads out there not in the FFXIV forums where users are experiencing this issue but, unfortunately, hardware information doesn't seem to be useful for identifying the root cause.Code:AMD CPU's w/ NVIDIA GPU's : 9
Intel CPU's w/ NVIDIA GPU's : 4
AMD CPU's w/ AMD GPU's : 5
Intel CPU's w/ AMD GPU's : 0
Outlier: Intel CPU's w/ Intel GPU's : 1
today i've helped one of my friends, who has an Intel CPU with an Nvidia GPU(RTX 2060) who was being plagued by error 11000002,from the tests we did,it certainly does seem related to the game not being able to get the GPU to display things on screen,in particular VisualFX, my friend's FF14 was crashing sometimes as soon as she logged in,sometimes it would let her play a few minutes... we tried a looot of fixes, including reinstalling windows,FF14,directx,drivers and all, what worked for US(i'm really sorry if it doesnt work for you), is that we went to the Nvidia Geforce settings, and turned all the graphics to the lowest settings(since we couldnt access the settings ingame due to the crash),and so far after an hour it hasnt crashed once!
Did you happen to note how many people had driver version 445.87 installed for those Nvidia ones?
Canadane in the other thread seems to think that there's something wrong with 445.87.
*sigh*
I am about to freaking give up.
I played for FIVE FREAKING HOURS last night, and two+ hours today, NO problems.
I played for several hours the day before, and the day before that, no problems.
Crashed randomly today. Did a FULL REBOOT with turning the power strip off.... crashed again after being online for like 20 seconds.
EDIT: only one thing I can do is try DX9.0c.
I could check but, I don't think it's worthwhile. Rolling back NVIDIA drivers from 445.87 is a common suggestion many have tried without it fixing the problem.
It's safe to say no one really knows why this is happening, since "solutions" can range from rolling back a graphics driver to disabling an entire CPU core. Next I'm sure a suggestion would be to contact your Great Grandfather via a weegee board and have him trouble-shoot the issue :o.
I jest but, I'm out of logical ideas since I don't have any logs to work off of and, I'm not the best at randomly trouble-shooting issues.
SO I fixed my previous ctd loading into a zone by reinstalling, and it played a cutscene just fine. Now I'm crashing with the dx11 error trying to load another cutscene. Love it.
no its cool you should totally have to reinstall a 50gb game twice in a month with no word on the devs as to why this has been happening since 2017
Yeah that whole reinstall thing makes my mind boggle too.
I mean, look. If the files are corrupt, then they'd fail an md5 check. So.......md5 the game's files (the game's launcher should be capable of doing this). If they pass, then that's not the problem. Check the Windows Registry to make sure nothing got corrupt in there, takes a few seconds for a program to do. If that passes, then there's nothing wrong with the game's install and we shouldn't be asking a player to download 50 GIGS of data multiple times over.
I don't have crashes, though I do have immense framerate drops that make the game borderline unplayable.
But for some reason it only started 2 days agoe. Untill then there never really were any big problems with crashes.
Adding in a "me too" here. I just resubbed a few days ago for the first time since 4.0 (logged in once last year for a server transfer during that free period). Was fine for a few days, got my GNB up to 70 with a random crash here and there. Then it just got worse and worse and worse, very rapidly over the last day or two. They've all been errorless CTDs except for two. It wasn't affecting other players 'til this morning when I crashed while tanking mid-Susano, and that's where I drew the line. Now I can't keep the game running for more than 5-10 minutes, and I've tried most everything in the thread and in others.

I'm pretty devastated, and put a lot of money back into resubbing/expansion/fantasia. Was really enjoying it, but this is legitimately unplayable now. No other program on my PC has any issues.

This is what fixed it for me on Windows 10 with updated nividia drivers:
1. Back up character data
2. Download the ffxiv setup https://www.finalfantasyxiv.com/playersdownload/na/
3.Uninstall the game through the ff14 setup
4. step1: go into windows settings > step2: go into update & security > step3: go to Windows Security > step4: go into virus and threat protection > step5: go into manage settings under virus & threat protection > step6: turn off real time protection.
5. reinstall ffxiv (When your done don't forget to turn anti virus back on).
Don't remember quite when it started. 5.0 for sure. Always no-error crashes. Running in Dx9. Still crash. Crash faster in Dx11.
I will find out when I get him and update this thread but one of the bird EX trails mounts, 100% of the time with just that one mount, I crash about 30-60 seconds after using it I get a Direct X error. I didn't care much because I got 30 other mounts to choose from.
None of the other EX trial bird mounts crash on me.
Experiencing same issue as well, I can go for one day with no crashes then suddenly crash 5 times in a row within 30 minutes the next day.
I also experience a variant of the DX11 Error, all animations in game will freeze but I can still chat with other people. Then roughly 20 seconds later I get a DX11 Error.
What I have tried:
- Rollback on every major nvidia driver version (After using DDU)
- Uncap FPS in-game then cap FPS to 60 using RTSS
- Underclocking GPU Core Clock by 100 MHZ
- Reinstall FFXIV from scratch
- SFC /scannow
- Cap FPS in-game to 60 (Fullscreen), disable G-SYNC, set Refresh Rate to 60
- Use NVIDIA Control Panel to set GPU to Debug Mode to undo all factory OC
What I am trying now:
- Disable all forms of overlays + anything attaching onto the rendering pipeline
- Currently updated to latest NVIDIA driver 446.14
- Aggressive GPU Underclocking
- Switching to DX9 Client
What I haven't tried:
- Delete profile settings and redo my entire UI
- Update Motherboard BIOS
- Reinstall Windows
Success Condition: Not experiencing DX11 Error for 1 Week
Switching to DX9 client seems to have "fixed" it. The game is absurdly sensitive to any form of overlays like discord streams. I don't crash if I start the stream from character select menu.
This issue? First time, and only time, it happened.
No idea what "2020-03-26_19:14" means, it happened 2020.05.24_17:56.
Most recent NVidia driver.
Non-OC CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 2200G
Non-OC GPU: EVGA RTX 2060
"display limit - characters and objects" at minimum.
1080p, all other graphic settings at "maximum".
I use a 144hz Gsync monitor and globally cap my system fps at 141fps for all games.
Before 5.0 I would get random DX11 crashes from time to time. Rare, but they did happen. When 5.0 launched I got daily DX11 crashes. They removed that terrible broken 90fps cap at some point and the crashes got worse.
I then used RTSS to limit my game (FFXIV only) to 90fps, but left the frame rate setting in game at 144hz (Refresh Rate 1/1).
I have not had a single DX11 crash in months. I can't say it works for everyone, but cap the engine (properly), something isn't right.
Was more or less crash free for the least 2-3 months, but they came back today with the Terms of Service update. Cant finish a single 24 man or go to half the areas without it crashing.
Can yall please fix your shi-. This is getting out of hand and going into the unplayable realm.
That's the game version.Quote:

Anyhow, I switched to dx9.0c and..... no crashes yet.
It's been a week+ I think, and I've done quite a few several hour stints and have yet had any problems with crashing.
Sadly, a few features are not available in dx9 (like large inventory without tabs), but meh. That's better than crashes.
Crashes started coming back for me with the latest updates to Windows. An update for my Nvidia also occurred. This still only occurs with the game. No problems with any of my other programs. Until someone from SE can convince me otherwise I firmly believe this is an incompatibility between Windows/DirectX and the game. Whether it's Microsoft's problem or SEs I cannot say. But they need to find out and take the appropriate steps.
