Only if it's optionnal, like something you have to unlock to be able to use it. I wouldn't want to see this in my emotes list.
NPCs can smoke. We should be able to too. Or if they want to be technical they can make it mogstation
A lot of younger people play this game. We don't want to make smoking look "cool" for them. On top of that, there are the legal issues. Many governments frown upon tobacco depiction, especially when it's done in a manner that glamorizes or normalizes its use, and it might drive up the rating in certain regions.
I never understand the whole protect the kiddies from X, isn't that the job of the parents? Also is it really fair to say x in media can lead to influencing children but not z?
It is the job of the parents but as we can see today many of those parents fail at the job. Also I believe ESRB has a rating if there is smoking in a game. This game would have to update it's ESRB and that would be a headache for people who already bought the game but have younger people playing. Than again most parents fail at the job and ignore ESRB ratings.
No. Smoking is gross.
As Metsonm pointed out in the next page there is the difference between something happening in the story by other characters and the playable character doing it. I have also not stated that I think that this makes it family friendly, this may have been the point of the person you quoted but my point was more that just because these things are in the game does not mean that our character should be able to do them.
I think smoking a pipe would be an acceptable middle ground, some characters would look pretty cool doing it in game but I don't think said cool factor would really translate across into real life.
LotR's didn't get kids into pipe smoking, I don't think FFXIV will either.
Serious question. Are those ratings the same worldwide? Because if they're not then maybe in certain regions adding the ability for players to smoke would make the age rating for the game rise.
I wouldn't use this myself but I have to admit that the image of a dapper elezen in Ishgardian glams smoking a pipe would look pretty amazing.
I would absolutely hate such a disgusting emote. Maybe it's because I hate when people stink up everything next to me and I can't stop coughing and can't breathe properly and have to get away from those people as quick as possible. I don't know how it is where you all live, but here people usually don't care if the people next to them can't take the smell or get sick from it. So I'm sorry that I hate it. I know that it sounds a bit excessive... but it's like if someone is scared of spiders or snakes and you would ask them if they would want to see any.
Actually, cutting yourself doesn't physically hurt the people standing next to you, but only yourself. So you're right, you can't really compare it.
Yes I would because it's a game and they should get over themselves on digital games. Also, many things smoked in pipes have no smell and no issues what so ever...
Honestly, if I knew someone was scared of a spider I would put a spider on them, same goes with snake so they get over that pathetic fear. Next Again, its a game... its not like your nose is in the game. I mean, that's basically like a vegan complaining about in game food being meat lol
This is why games today suck and people make horrible movies/tv shows this days because everyone doesn't know the difference in fantasy and reality obviousely. Real life Morality real life issues with stuff shouldn't prevent any shows ever made. So many snowflakes in this world use well I hate this because real life, or so many bad things from X in real life I dont want it in the game. Its a fantasy ....
Honest question, are you bothered by the fact that you are forced to take a life in this game? You take away all he's got, and all he's ever gonna have. Isn't that just disgusting?
I honestly don't know how to look up which video game rating system a country like the Federated States of Micronesia uses. In fact, google fails me when I try to look up the Game Software Rating Regulations rating for FFXIV. But as with certain region exclusives, content does not necessarily need to be released in all regions.
There is also this stance which the devs could repurpose for us to use.

Sure thing, I'm not a fan of smoking IRL, but I'm able to separate IRL from video games and would love to see my femroe smoking like Yotsuyu. I love the pipe she uses
Whoa, dude! I can agree with your post except for that because that is a HUGE dick move. Phobias are legitimate psychiatric conditions people can’t help, but it’s done of your darn business to try “curing” them. This ain’t how exposure therapy works anyway and I am frankly dismayed by your callous attitude and hope no one with a phobia or any sort of trauma goes near you. Not like a fear of snakes or spiders is “pathetic” anyway considering there are various venomous species that can kill you (and you can still get hurt by harmless species anyway if you’re unlucky); such phobias are old primal survival mechanisms that kept our ancestors alive before the modern era. And if whoever has such phobias isn’t going to work with snakes and spiders, there’s no need to “cure” them unless they want to get over it. And I’m speaking as a big spider and snake lover.
But otherwise, yes, I agree many people seem incapable of separating fantasy from reality and are convinced that somehow a stupid video game will make people actually do things. And yet here’s my generation who grew up with Pokemon, but afaik, at least 99.9% of us are are pretty anti-dogfighting (which was what a lot of people think Pokemon involves, but I’m not going to explain established lore and mechanics here).
No one’s going to actually breathe in the smoke in-game, especially not if they re-use the existing pipe animations. Pipes have also been fantasy staples anyway, but you don’t see most fantasy fans smoking because some random protag smoked.
Nah, smoking is gross, unhealthy, and unattractive.
Fair enough. I don't think harmful self-gratification emotes are something that suits the game though. We aren't able to emote stuffing our faces with sugar and grease or make an obese character. Instead we can exercise by dancing, sparring and doing squats, push-ups and sit-ups. We can't gamble our gil away or pretend to use drugs with emotes. We can /toast to celebrate an occasion but we can't express being in a drunken stupor like this NPC:

Everything points to player characters leading a healthy life so I just don't see how taking up deadly vices is consistent with the image we currently portray as Warriors of Light or with how we interact with other players.
My issue is with tobacco specifically because it's one of the leading causes of deaths around the world. Some of those who die to it are killed by other people smoking. Being able to promote it via emotes to other players who could be minors is not a necessity. People could just make mods for this purpose like they do for other adult content. If there is some ancient method of inhaling smoke which in no way resembles cigarettes, cigars or pipes, that would be fine by me. Could call it /medicine too. Edit: Or make a housing item which allows your character to interact with it and smoke in private.
Wow....you must be a great person and fun to be around...HUGE /s
Seriously? Being scared of spiders is pathetic? that's like one of the most common fears people have.
Was this your attempt at trying to "school" them? you failed...horribly, lost all credibility.
You sir, are the pathetic one.
That is nice Lol, it makes them learn the hard way that there is no reason to fear the spider or the snake those two creatures only attack people who desever it anyways if you don't mess with them they won't mess with you.
Also, you're right, it is common, but the common man is inferior to those of us who know there is no reason to fear any animal.
Its about teaching them the hard way the same way to teach someone who can't swim how to swim you throw them in sink or swim is a great teaching method.
And nop your incorrect.. the world and nature doesn't cuddle with people its a harsh reality that the fear is Pathetic and should get over the fear.
That would be awsome making an obese lala tank! YES this should be a feature! Joking aside I do see where you are coming from, but I hate smokers IRL, I have walked up to random strangers and asked them if they knew how to read while smoking in front of a non smoking sign, it has gotten my ass kicked though, but I still stand by what I said. That aside for me I see no parallel between actions in a fictional world and a game world, even though I know people do I am just blind to it I guess I have a differing view on many topics regarding what people do ingame though.
Studies have shown that the fear of spiders is likely a genetic one, as even babies who will have never seen one will react in fear. It is a survival thing, as spiders can get in to where a baby is, and they are poisonous. Bears, while deadly, do not elicit the same reaction in babies, as they are unlikely to encounter one within their home.
You aren't "better than the common man" or anything. There is nothing that makes you a greater person. Your interactions here tend to point you down the other way.
If a smoking emote is implemented, then you gotta implement an exaggerated cough emote at the same time. I’m asthmatic IRL, so I’d make my character cough around these smokers for added immersion.
(But honestly, smoking is a dirty habit irl, and I hate that I have to use my inhaler, and still get a phlegmy, wheezy cough for the rest of the day, just because someone smoked near me while we were both waiting for the bus)
It is juice....Fermented grape juice!
Jokes aside, I dont understand the conflation between a game and real life going on from the opposition to the emote. If the argument is "Well this will promote smoking to children" then we got to remove a lot of things from the game. Even then, I think there's this weird concept that kids are too stupid to understand the difference between a game and real life. I was a kid once too, and I played my fair share of games that had smokers. I dunno about anyone else but I sure didnt sit there and think "gee, this video game guy smokes so I will too!" If anything, kids pick up smoking either to fit in to social groups typically or as a possible status symbol, not because they saw it on a piece of media. When I was a kid it wasnt cool cause Joe Camel smoked or because some action hero lit one up. Its cool cause its defying the rules and being rebellious. This also just plainly ignores societal counter pressures, or that smoking is in decline. So I dont buy into the "If we put this emote into video games, all of a sudden theres gonna be a surge of child smokers."
If the argument is it supports bad health habits cause smoking is gross, yeah well the game does a lot of that already and probably worse. This is the same concept of violent videogames makes everyone violent mass murderers. It's a BS argument. I do a lot of terrible things in game healthwise, like jump off cliffs or stand in fire, and I dont go doing that in real life. Or the weird one where we say "Nah, second hand smoke man!"...in a videogame. We've been LITERALLY gassed in this game among other things, and were thinking about second hand smoke?
Look, if you have personal reasons why you dont like smoking, thats cool. I have my own reasons too. But part of the fun of fantasy and RPGs is living a bit vicariously through avatars. You dont have to get the emote if you dont want it. But demanding no one else gets it cause "Muh reasons" is stupid. It's literally denying other people an aspect they think would be fun because of your own personal scruples. If they have a smoke emote, it shouldnt be any of your business. Dont get it if you dont want it. As I mentioned before, if its mogstation exclusive, then thats that. Even more reason why you dont have to have it.
"Roll a joint" emote as well. Why not.
Add a TV in the FC house that plays football and use your "ask for a beer" or "ask for a sandwich" emote.
How riveting.
Personally I hate the cigar tray furniture item. I'll see a really cool bar/lounge area and that one item will just completely ruin the vibe for me.
But oddly enough, I don't mind the NPCs smoking in Kugane, and I don't think I'd have an issue with an emote for it as long as it's pipes like that and not a common cigarette/cigar.
Sorry nope, There is no need for it.
First dungeon literally has women whove been kidnapped by pirates and there's plenty to infer theyve been..well taken advantage of in the worst way possible. Among those there are lalafells. The game doesnt shy away from treating lalafells as adults (as they are). So if the game were playing here is "No smoking cause we dont have prostitution!", game kinda already has it indirectly. Also not sure why were talking about an emote for smoking is some how equivilant to prostitution? Seems kinda a big stretch.
