It's ironic this way of thinking, since this way of thinking is exactly the same. Rich.

Not really, this community needs far less people that think only of themselves and thier own gratification and considers others in the equation. Having been a WOW player for years before moving here I've seen what happens when the community keeps that kind of behavior up.
I'll take anime over crappy western artwork.
This is the double edged nature of things.
On the one hand, yeah, if he were to come here and that just brings players with WoW mentalities with them (where all they care about is big numbers and big shoulder pads for their big egos), itd probably be a long term detriment as if they get enough traction, devs could change how the game proceeds in favor of courting more players with that mind set, thus alienating legacy players.
On the other hand, more people in the game would help out with funding and possibly get us better and more stuff faster. If hte game doubled in size, as an example, it would galvanize SE to invest more into the game which might be a net benefit to everyone. That and maybe, just maybe, we can help those WoW players who are all about the big numbers aspect to see it our way, where that's not all there is to an MMO.
It's not like SE uses what they make RIGHT NOW on the game anyways so that wouldn't matter. Also those WoW players arent new players they have been on the WoW train for years and most of them since WoW first released so expecting to change their minds has a really tiny chance in working.
Most played horde race is blood elf tho lol
i always thought wow's artstyle was more like a western fantasy comic. xiv's is more like a realistic western fantasy. not that these are bad, mind you.
Honestly, I don't see much "anime" going on with the aesthetic in XIV. This game seems more like it has a fantastical stylized-realism sort of look. I've played other MMOs like Elsword, Maplestory, Eden Eternal, La Tale, Soul Saver Online, and probably some others I don't remember since years ago me and my friends would just game hop from one to another after playing for a month and a half or so. But, if being too "anime" seems to be the issue, I don't really understand that viewpoint as I personally can't really see it, especially in comparison to the games I've played before FFXIV. FFXIV just has clean looking aesthetics to me, same for ESO. WoW never really caught my interest, it just looks plain ugly and off-putting, and it isn't because of the more "toony" aesthetic as Overwatch has that and its easy on the eyes for me, not to mention I've heard some unsavory stories about the WoW community. FFXIV seems like a game I'll be playing for a while, the community has been pretty pleasant from short time I've experienced it and I'm enjoying my gameplay experience, despite people saying how much of slog early levels are.
Literally thought the same thing. I played WoW for over a decade and honestly my first impressions of this game's aesthetic was "oh this style is very close to realism" because I was so used to the cartoony and often goofy style of WoW.
I feel like people who make the anime comparison haven't watched much or any anime. There is definitely a japanese influence (it is a japanese game) but to call it anime is a huge stretch. There are actual anime-style games out there that legit look like an actual anime.
I think it's the whole it's kind of fashionable to hate on weeaboos stuff is the cause for some of these sort of comments. Some think FFXIV must be a cringe anime trip just because it's japanese.
When I say FFXIV is anime I mean in it's artstyle. Like when you look at the style of the eyes and whatnot or all the drawn art it's based on it's anime based. What I don't mean is it's based on anime as thats wrong.. but SE's base art style is that of an anime look.. that's what I mean anyway.
Yea, I'm going to have to agree with Penthea. I don't see anime style in XIV, I see a lot of jrpg tropes but nothing that screams anime at me. Character eyes and noses are proportion realistically, no over exaggerated emotions (sweatdrops, nose fountains, mood lines). The game obviously has japanese influences in its aesthetic but that's because it's a japanese game. Japanese != Anime
One of the biggest reasons I don't talk to my friends about this game is because of character model and design. Especially now we're going to have rabbit-women running around to join scantly clad Miqo'te and kiddie-P Lalafells...it's really hard to swallow. I'm not sure I'd describe these design choices as being "too cute," but I agree with the sentiments.
The only "anime" like races in FFXIV are Lalafell (who look chibi, especially those dune folk eyes) and maybe Miqo'te with their large eyes and cat-girl look. The other races don't look anime at all.
I certainly think FFXIV has a lot of cute going on in it and I dress my character to be cute and think she's very cute. FFXIV also has a lot of surrealist imagery as well so, I think it's a combo of both. I'm a 14 year wow veteran.
It doesn't matter if you can find the fine lline that distinguishes such and such from an anime, or not. For the question at hand to an outsiders perspective, and I can attest to this since I don't watch ANY anime at all, or have ever since like saturday morning cartoon Pokemon, or Yu-Gi-Oh, this game looks anime. Simple as that. It will have a negative connotation just for being Japanese, simply how it is.
Like I said before, when an outsider watches the ShadowBringers trailer, they don't think it looks cool, they think it looks cringe, and "weeb". Just watch, since he was mentioned, Asmongold reacting to the trailer, one of the more recent ones, where he was open to trying FF out.
This discssuion reminded me of this vid by Nixxiom (funny vid regarding FFXIV lol).

I am talking about judging a game just because of the graphics makes no sense. These WoW players especially Asmongold that call this game "for weebs and its too cute" should actually take a look at there game before casting judgement because WoW looks like total crap and again looks like a sub par upgrade on graphics of Runescape.
I played WoW as my only game from wrath to warlords, and honestly I hated the games art direction with a burning passion. Luckily for me the game was good until then so I didn't care, but FF's artstyle/direction combined with how much freedom the player has with the glamour system beats wow out for me.
Now that's not the only reason I play this over WoW exclusively, but looking up on youtube "why -insert WoD/Legion/BFA- is bad" will pretty much tell you the rest.
as a wowfugee myself my only complains about xiv are minor.
1) glam system blows compared to transmog
2) pvp blows compared to wow's (even excluding world pvp)
3) eureka blows but at least there's plenty of other content available (compared to bfa, if you think half of the dungeons in it were god awful and don't like the gearing system as was the case for me, you might be better off finding a new game to play. like i did!)
Well, despite catpeople I wouldn´t say FFXIV´s art style is anime, but more like realistic, at least compared to WoW. Whereas WoW´s art style is clearly western comic books (huge weapons and even mages are as buff as Vin Diesel). I wouldn´t say any of those art choices is bad anyway, they follow the direction of their respective sagas.
If anything, I´d go with WoW´s landscapes, where you can go anywhere you can see, and FFXIV´s characters and their glamour options (even if the glamour system and inventory space is way more bothersome than WoW´s transmog system, which is very easy to use).
WoW looked amazing...a very long time ago. It still looks really good but it's heading in to the "charming looking retro" category. I'm not saying that this is a bad thing, some people love this. But it definitely no longer looks like a modern game.
One of the things that shocked me most about starting FFXIV is that characters actually wear clothes, and not just textures replacing skin on most of their bodies. The clothes in FFXIV have actual material textures. I can see an obvious difference between fabric, metal and leather. There are discernible layers that don't look flat. After playing WoW for so long this blew me away.
But...FFXIV looks absolutely nothing like Pokémon or Yu-Gi-Oh. I struggle to see the similarities between those two anime and this game. If anyone thinks they look similar then they are greatly misremembering how those anime look. It's sad that something being japanese is enough to turn someone off regardless of how it looks.
I'm sorry but anyone who thinks the ShB trailer looks weeb knows nothing about weeb stuff. The argument is certainly there for SB with the clear eastern influence for the environments and highlighted classes, but ShB? Most of it looks like classic western high fantasy.
I think people are overly focused on the fact that SE are a japanese company instead of taking the game for what it is. Just because it's japanese doesn't make it stereotypical otaku stuff.
Also lets not forget WoW had an expansion all about a panda race in a panda land with a panda culture that was clearly of strong eastern influence. The female pandas are super cute with huge eyes and a permanent smile plastered on to their faces...and do the cringey caramelldansen as their racial dance :p
But somehow FFXIV's supposed weebness and cuteness is unfamiliar territory for WoW players ;)
edit: yes I know Caramelldansen isn't a japanese song
I never said it did look like Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh! I was just saying those are the only "anime" I have ever even seen, and I don't think I even knew what anime was until I was told a few years ago. Yes, from my point of view a lot of this stuff looks very similar whether you are thinking of one of those weird lolli (?) MMOs with the cutesy child characters or something, or not However, people will lump those in with the more supposed serious animes as well. Viewing everything as the same, if it's from Japan. I think dark souls or bloodborne (those are japanese right?) are some of the only ones not considered "weeb", or like classic games, nintendo. It's a very narrow-minded point of view, but that's how it is. Stuff like Dragon Ball Z or those mainstream anime are liked though.
Yeah, and these people also think the expansion was stupid, and "weeb", and I think it's supposed to on Chinese culture. Hey these are the same people who see Korean, Chinese, and Japanese games as all "weeb". I am generalizing though.
Check what Asmongold and his friend think of Bless:
I'm gonna edit that out actually, I'm not sure if a cuss word in a linked video will get me banned again. Look it up though on youtube.
It was also the most hated expansion, aesthetically, specifically because it was asian themed. Other expansions may have destroyed characters and ruined the story for players, but Pandaria was reviled by the majority of the playerbase. If anything all you're doing is proving that they have never particularly liked asian styled content.
People are free to like or dislike whatever they want. But if people are going to dislike something they should at least know what they're talking about... and in this case, it's that a JRPG =/= anime. There really is a difference. And I definitely wouldn't take the opinion of most Youtubers seriously, especially Asmongold.
I just don't get how WoW players can get off making fun of FFXIV graphics but are playing a game since 2004 that has not had a meaningful graphics update since its release. The game honestly looks like a F2P game and even some F2P games look better then WoW. I can understand people not LIKING the FFXIV style which is fine but then to try and use the words "cute" or "weeb" as an insult just boggles my mind.
I guess the saying "Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones" should apply here?
To be completely honest, I have seen more people in FF XIV bashing WoW than people in WoW bashing FF XIV. Most of them had no idea what they were talking about. Over the past couple of years I've seen a fair amount of people who play WoW actually say "this game sucks, go play FF XIV". WoW hasn't been in a good place for some time, though it has nothing to do with the art style.
Uh, you must've missed all of their graphical updates. There's a huge difference between the burning crusade zones and the lich king zones. Not to mention the old world revamp in cataclysm.
If you can't see the difference, then you're no different than the typical wow player that reduces ffxiv to anime catgirls and desu.
As someone who grew up in the west on stuff like Conan the Barbarian and The Hobbit….I had a really hard time appreciating the Japanese art direction in FFXIV. Even now it feels a little odd to me at times but it’s also growing on me more and more every day. But WoW is just typical western style stuff imo and it’s just what most of us in the US are used to I think. I like WoWs art direction but I don’t see myself ever playing it again.
Perhaps it requires an appreciation like XI does. That game is ancient, the graphics are obviously abysmal compared to modern games - but I absolutely love the art direction/world with that game. I'v personally never touched WoW as the style never appealed to me, but then I got sucked into WildStar whichiswas also more cartoony, but I loved the feel of the game all the same. Personal preferences are a weird thing.
