Playable kids in FFXIV

Honestly... All this talk about "How old are the Twins"

When technically, the biggest notable thing for the whole "People will sexualize teenagers!" thing would be the fact that you can glamour Zhloe Aliapoh.

Given the amount of risqué glamour available in the game, it is entirely possible to put this gal into some rather concerning attire. While she's 21 years old, she looks younger than your average Miqo'te especially as she's also quite short.

It seems that Miqo'te are very adept at looking younger than they are... I only just found out that Khloe is 13 years old...

I honestly would have pegged Zhloe at age 15-16 and Khloe at age 7-9... (I also thought that T'kebbe was about 6 years old rather than the 12 years she actually is)

I guess Miqo'te develop more slowly than Humans?

But anyway... All this stuff aside, whether Alphinaud is still 16 or has aged and is now 17, 18, or 2000 years old, it matters not. The fact is, he starts adventuring with you at aged 16. Meanwhile Alisaie does her own adventuring also at aged 16 (She goes hunting for Bahamut and takes you through the Coils of all places...). We've had Alphinaud in combat alongside us MANY times and most recently got to play AS him during a battle.

This means that 16 year olds don't cause ethical issues with combat. Leading to the only other possible objection for playable characters at ~15-18 years old physically would be sexualization, with the likes of glamour and emotes.

Though how impactful that would be is hard to say. If they can still be considered "Adults" then it would be fine I guess? If they're still considered a "Child" that stage then it would cause issues. I suppose with this uncertainty, a outright "No" would be the best case.

This aside, I do want to point out that I think people are overreacting about the whole "It only takes 1 person to make a nude mod/take sexualized pictures and the game would be forever tainted!!!" because, this being the internet, I'm fairly sure such a thing already exists. Including that of younger characters. Since people are messed up >.>

I didn't realize this was even a thing that got asked for. I don't recall ever seeing htis asked for, is this asked for more by the JP community?

Even if the...concerns Yoshi P brought up with child characters weren't a thing, that would still be additional character models that bring the same issues that all new race models bring with adding to the workload of emotes and gear fitting. So I wouldn't expect it to ever happen outside of occasionally seeing npc kids.

I think its more of a misunderstanding regarding people's wishes. I think people are misunderstanding the desire for a more dimorphic race among Viera where Males are more youthful/cute looking compared to the female viera as people saying they want to play as a kid. While I am sure that there are players who would want to play as children for nefarious reasons, they are in no means a majority but an extreme minority. The trouble is some people I think are conflating the two.

As long as it's established all PCs are by MSQ standards 18+, appearance doesnt matter, where YoshiP's stance seems to be based on the appearance of something being most meaningful.

Though... this is a bit of a cultural thing. In the States, 18 is the age you're considered an adult. In some parts of this country, for certain aspects of life, you're considered an adult at 16. Same with some countries considering you an adult at 16. Also, as was mentioned, the fact you get to have one fight as Alphinaud is not at all the same thing as some of the things you could do with an actual child model in the game ranging from is stated concerns of violence against children to pedophilia. No game wants to risk that kind of press, not just because it would be bad publicity, but countries like Australia would pull the game entirely, no one would be able to play it.

And even if many people wouldn't do that with their avatar, the fact that someone COULD do it, would be enough for some groups to petition to have the game pulled, not to mention what would happen even here if someone was found to be doing ERP with a child character in game.

I think whats important to note here is that even if people created mods or fanart that shows child-like-PCs nude or in sexualized pictures its quite different from SE basically "offering" you the option ingame through their ingame content to achieve something like that. If someone is putting a child into a... questionable situation (wether thats combat or sex) right now thats totally on them. They need to use tools that arent developed by SE to make that happen, so SE wouldnt be liable (at least not as much as they would be if they provided the child-model as a playable character).

And if you read the post made by Yoshi-P carefully you'll notice that it isnt only about sexualizing kids, but also about violence used against them. During the game its unavoiable that violence is used against your character. So even if no one goes out of their way to create a nude-child-mod, they're facing the issue of violence against children - something thats most likely jump the rating up in some countries or at least they'd risked that - I'm not sure how "bad" it is in germany in that regards right now but I recall that Fallout 1 or 2 had the children "removed" to prevent the game from being pulled from the market since you could kill them and violence against kids is a big no-no (since they apparently only made the kids invisble and untouchable and didnt remove them properly that apparently lead to situation where kids could pickpocket you and you couldnt do anything about it, since you could see them...)

I still think that the existence of something shouldn't be considered "Offering" it for any purpose.

Especially if that purpose happens to be something that a player has to go out of their way to do.

Or is the game currently "Offering" the ability to make inappropriate content because child models exist in the game files and thus someone can use third party tools to utilize them and make them nude - Even without them being playable?

Is the game "Offering" the ability to hack it and use teleport cheats like bots do?

I think this still comes with the oddity that is defining "Kids"

Like, what age range are we all actually talking about here?

But how young are we talking, specifically?

Since, I'm only aware of people asking for younger characters, so more like Alphinaud/Alisaie age. Which is apparently fine for violence.

While "Young boys and girls" suggests more like pre-teen. In which case the violence would be a big no-no (But also wouldn't be supported by lore either)

I'm not sure if Japan has been asking for actual pre-teens, but from what I've seen from EU/US it's been more stuff like the Twins/Padjal type teenage characters as opposed to Khloe/Rielle type characters.

Interestingly enough, Rielle is involved in combat - You have to protect her and she also will heal you during the DRK job quests.

Also Sylphie (Whom is canonically 14 years old) gets involved in combat during the CNJ/WHM job quests (Along with Gatty whom not only gets involved but also gets assaulted by voidsent)

So hey, as long as we're nitpicking MMO compression, how is Gridania supposed to be a gigantic, bustling city-state when it has about the same floor area as a large shopping mall?

Be nice if they added age slider and expand the height slider. Then could play as a kid. Hope cities in 5.0 same size as 1.0 cities.

Why are people trying to justify playing as a child? With all the glam options in this game, it reeks of pedo. Disgusting lol.

We already have gear that is supposed to be sexy and not something you should put a child in, so unless they'd just lock things like the bunny-outfit or the thavnair-stuff for child-like characters you wouldnt need a nude-mod to sexualize the kids - you could put the child-model designed by SE into clothes designed by SE, lay them down on a bed designed by SE and so on.

I can understand that one doesnt want to use their imagination to much in this regard - but even without thinking to much about this I can see why there is a difference between mods adding a lot to the game to make child-characters happen and SE outright offering them. You wouldnt need a nude-mod to put them into lewd-situations.

(Intrestingly the first artbook to ARR already features the comment of one of the designers stating that they're trying not to sexualize those types of gear for lalafell to much)

Oh, trust me, I've seen people ask to play actual kids like Khloe (who really does look more like 10 than 13).

And there simply is a difference between you protecting a child in a 30-minute-duty and your character being a child whos constantly involved in combat.

Why all this age nitpicking and why is it so difficult to understand that characters who are clearly underage could easly lead to problems? One-time duties that involve children in combat-situations are not the same as playing through the mainstory with a character that you can put in any outfit you want.

I thought part of the issue with it - regarding violence - is that with the young characters that are involved in combat if they are KO'd they don't actually fall over and 'die' - you simply fail the quest. While with the player if we fail the quest by taking too much damage we fall over and look 'dead' on the floor.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong if they actually fall to the ground or take a knee? I don't recall being able to see any of the young characters actually being KO'd.

I will never understand why people wish to play as teens/kids... Are teens/kids not getting enough validation in other games? If you're an adult and you want to run around as an actual child then I'm sorry then I honestly find that majorly suspicious. I understanding wanting to play a character that is your actual age. But I have a sneaky suspicion that those who are wanting to play as children/teens aren't actually teens or children. Besides, half of the races you can easily be a 'teen' already. All of the teenagers, barring Elezen are adult size in height. You either have, child - or adult teenager, there's no in between with the models. There's a teenage Male Au'ra in the stepps who is full height for instance. Canon WoL looks like he was in his late teens when he started; he's still average height. A lot of the female Miqo'te you come across seem to be very young as well, in their late teens - etc, they are still of average kitty height.

But yeah, children shouldn't be playable. I've given my reasons why in various threads asking for them to be playable in some shape or form. RP reasons aside, there's also the whole immersion/lore stuff as well. I find it hard to believe that a child, even with the Echo and Blessing, can handle the nonsense our character goes through (even Fordola questions how we deal with this). Abduction, betrayal, loss, drugged and almost being killed several times in cutscenes. Then there's also how unrealistic/stupid it is to see a child becoming a Captain of a Grand Company and being a master of multiple Jobs.

The 'time bubble' refers to player progression, in which various story lines can be (and often are) completed out of sync from one another. Canonically, time on Hydaelyn is 1:1 with the real world (with accelerated in-game day/night transitions for obvious design reasons). This was established a very long time ago. Years ago, even.

A Lalafell playable character is an adult, not a child. If you think they're children, that's a you problem.

I'd think all the fetch this or that for npcs , move those boxes over there, and run here and there only to be told to go back to the person you started with for quests, and do the entire tree of HW moogle quests would add up to more than 6 months. ;P

But really think about the far away places you have to travel to the slow way before aetheryte access -- especially The East on a ship that should at least take a month lol

I just think of Lala's as either disturbing looking adult/children hybrids or potatoes. Mostly potatoes. ;p

Re. the issue of portraying children in violent situations, the entire plot of Stormblood (especially the early stages) revolves around us taking part in a war - one we've been forced into, but we're still told we have to do it.

That would take on quite a different tone with a child character.


The story is generally written with a young adult character in mind.

The lorebook says that "with lifespans one- or two-tenths again as long as their fellow races, their physical maturity is somewhat delayed" and they'll overtake adult Hyuran height around age 20.

I take that to mean their entire aging process plays out at that slower speed. So Alphinaud is physically somewhere around 13-14.

Up the other end of the scale, I would have estimated Edmont to be around 50, but he's 59 - which is consistent with aging "20% slower" than the average person.

(But to throw a spanner into the works, if you do the maths then 34-year-old Carvallain was 19 in the "ten years ago" sections of 1.0's plot, and already an adult at that point. I'm inclined to think they forgot to recalculate ages with the five-year timeskip, and he should have been 24 then / 39 now, but still that's the official timeline.)

They mentioned that at the lore panel in the first recent Fanfest - I can't remember where the 13 comes from (possibly the second lorebook?), but previous text for the Khloe doll/minion indicated that she's 10, and they've stealth-rewritten it to match the other less-editable reference.

While I entirely agree that there shouldn't be playable child characters in this game, not everyone who would like to play as a child character is doing it with "dishonourable intentions", so you shouldn't instantly assume that's their motivation. It will also appeal to people who just like cute characters (and maybe haven't thought through all the implications of a child being the main character of this particular story).

I've said before, I do really like the childlike Viera concept art. I think it's an appealing character design, in an entirely innocent way.

It can't really work for an FFXIV playable character concept because of all the issues discussed in this topic so far, but if they did somehow exist, I'd certainly be making one as an alt - primarily for playing around with glamours. He'd be dressing up in the sort of outfits that are too 'cute' for my Elezen (but he gets stuck wearing them anyway because someone has to, and they look even worse on my Au Ra). This isn't the depths of depravity, is it? But it would work better on a younger-looking character than is currently available besides Lalafell, whose proportions are a bit more "squashed up" than I'd like.

(If I was shown the costume and told to design a character to wear it, I'd probably come up with something in the realm of that Viera concept art.)

Established when? And how?

We have an official statement that time does not behave normally, so where is the information that overrides that?

Again, it's not about proving that characters have said X amount of time has passed within the game, because the "time bubble" concept is about saying that the game takes place in a very small amount of time with regards to character ages and dates, even if it provably should and does take much longer for those events to play out.

It's not saying the whole story has to squeeze into that small space of time. It's excusing the fact that it really does take longer, and yet the characters haven't gotten any older.

That depends on if they add a "Child-like" (Or more appropriately, Teenaged) race/body option and how they choose to implement it.

If its a separate race, they could easily design unique non-sexy appearances for the sexy clothing.

If its an existing race, they could alter the design for the younger models.

Though this would be a lot of work...

It also depends on again, how young they make things. Since, as I've mentioned, you can already glamour Zhloe whom looks a lot younger than she actually is. So apparently that age can get away with sexy clothing just fine. While Alphinaud/Alisaie show that that age can get away with violence just fine.

But it needs specifying what requests are being made and denied though.

If people are asking for actual kids, then yeah, no. That doesn't make sense for the game.

If it's simply teenagers a la Twins/Zhloe then... I could see them being fine and an alternate option for characters alongside maybe older characters.

There isn't.

The kind of people who have issues with these sort of things don't care about context.

They care about depictions of violence/sexuality and nothing more.

If someone has a problem with violence involving children, they don't care if the goal of the game is to protect them, if the game shows violence towards them or allows a player to show violence towards them, BANNED. No questions, just bans.

That is why most games involving children have them be completely immortal and incapable of being attacked by enemies and unphased by player attacks (Until you mod the game such as in Fallout 3 or Skyrim or use console commands to disable their immortality flag) because allowing them to be shown being hurt is an instant ban in certain countries.

In such a regard, we have several "Child" characters (Whom are more like teenagers given their actual teen ages) whom are actually depicted being attacked. Which seems to be fine. With more notably actual teenagers (The Twins) being involved in combat repeatedly.

This suggests that the thing about "Violence involving Children" seems to be more subject to pre-teens rather than teenagers. So we'd be talking Khloe ages and younger (Which is appropriate for the children that appear in FO3 and Skyrim. Where teenager violence was okay, such as the opening for FO3 when you're like 16 and you get into a fight with the Tunnel Rats and you can literally beat the other guy to death, steal his knife and stab his friends to death... What? I don't like bullies okay!?)

Meaning that, theoretically, 16 year old characters should be fine. If Zhloe, whom looks about 16, is fine with the potential to be dressed sexy and if the Twins, whom are 16 (Or at least, started out the story aged 16), are fine being in combat throughout the MSQ alongside you and can be interpreted to flirting with you.

So yeah...

While, personally, I don't care for having younger playable characters, I am however here to play devil's advocate when it comes to analysing what is already in the game.

Also, I think it would be neat if there were more varied ages of NPC's. Rather than 99% of them all being young adults in peak physical health... Like it seems really strange when there's like a Roe who's supposed to be a "Frail and feeble old man" but he's just another roided out slab of muscle... But with grey hair.

If playable characters of other ages is a desired thing from players then it could lead to the dev's spending time developing these more varied NPC types first - Just like the new Fatqo'te might be a beginning of having overweight NPC's be a thing from now on.

I'd rather not, the closest we've ever seen to this I think is the Moonfire Faire from last year having the one young Miqo girl in a swimsuit. You can try to argue lalas but realistically they are just dwarves(Even more so with the First being a thing). Adults that have small bodies so you'll be judged but they wouldn't already have those risque outfits in the game for them otherwise.

Rather not have the best MMO on the market be plagued with "It's great for lolicon/shotacon immersion" as a selling point if they were going to attempt this.

I thought they had playable children in the game.. I think they're called Lalafels?

I think theres probably a range of things people think of when they ask about 'younger' characters, ranging from "every highlander option looks like theyre significntly older than everyone else can there be more looks that fit with everyone else" to "why cant i look like hilda or some of the npc elfboys" to "I want to look like the lev twins" to "Cant I just be a young teenager?".

I can understand some of those.

Not once I heard people talk down to each other about it but this day and age people accuse others of stuff jumping to conclusions like you are doing, do I believe there should be young characters No because of mods that's it.

people have to remember if you are age 30 playing a young character you aren't a kid people mix this up then go on the attack like you are actually a young child being attacked treating them like a child even calling another person who could be their wife in real life playing a character a name and they don't think like you at all.

I honestly don't care for playing young characters anyways i WANT A BIRDMAN RACE

Part of the issue, as some are demonstrating, is that if you even think about having a more youthful looking character that could be mistaken for a teen at a glance, youre obviously a predator and terrible human being. That might sound hyperbolic, but there is an implicit argument among some of these posts that are suggesting that would be the only reason for having those options. It's going straight to the worst case scenario and saying that if you dont agree, youre a closet pedo. Everyone wants to be quick on condemning pedophilia and predatory behavior as not acceptable, that they are overcompensating and screaming that any thought of having a more youthful character is signs of being a terrible human being.

What I mean to suggest is people need to cool it with the innuendos about that and just address points directly made rather than all this strawmaning and hand waving.

Just create a race of elves that look like teens but are actually over a thousand years old? Just like that ranger in the Anime "Goblin Slayer"? xD
