People who are mad about the "limited job" didn't actually want Blue Mage.

I think BLU looks fantastic as "limited job".

Instead of scripted quests we got a real BLU, a real customizable job wich you can make different builds depending on the content you'll face.


I've seen lots of people complaining, but almost none of them understands what BLU really is. I guess they just need time; don't feed them.

So you want a blue mage that is locked out of like 90% of the games content? I sure don't I was hoping to main blue mage. But with it's current state i can't. I just hope if they have done this to blue mage they won't do it to dancer when and if they put it in this game.

You don't even need to standardize its systems to make it functional in that regard. You could just as easily say, "You need X number more <selected/mouseover-ed role> skills to queue as <selected/mouseovered role>."

It's a hero class; they can always go level something simpler instead, so there are no true leveling bottleneck concerns of note for the BLU itself, only those it'd be playing with.

You do not need a template to balance a job. You do not need template quests to fill out a job's arsenal.

Why not have both? Restricted skills for group content thus people can use it there but awesome overpowered skills for solo content. I mean those who dont want to be restricted could simply ignore instances and the rest can enjoy their jobs in current content.

BLUs are those budding genius kids who are especially having trouble coping with an poorly implemented school system. I feel like Limited Jobs could work nicely as a Sub Job system.

Right now Blue Mage just feels like a combat Fisher; You're filling out a log of spells and that's about all it's there for. That's nice for what it is I guess, but it's kind of meh for a number of reasons. If it were a Sub Job, allowing you to take select skills over to your main Job, then it would have a bit of endgame utility. Think something like the ability to use stat potions, or a second tier of additional actions. Just something new but similar for you to throw out in a fight for additional damage/utility/etc. They'd need to tweak balance a bit for it of course, but I don't think it'd be that hard on such a small scale. Best of all, it would add a degree of customisation to the game that's always been missing, more so when you factor in additional Limited/Sub Jobs. Lets say you can only take one action over, but you've got multiple actions to pick from, and then multiple Limited/Sub Jobs like Blue Mage that are all have the same level of options to pick from. That could be a fun system, I think...

Works nicely for the gimmicky Jobs that perhaps aren't likely to get a fully fleshed out just due to balance issues, I think. Even the current Limited Job system does that, I'd just like a bit more purpose to the system is all... I'm certain Beast Master will be a Limited Job at this point, and I'd love to go around taming various beasts, then being able to just pick one that I can throw out in a fight, on say Samurai (Yojimbo-lite, lets go!). Chemist is another Job I could see getting this treatment, and I'd love to have it gather ingredients, then set some ingredients on Scholar and be able to mix them in battle... Heck, if they'd thought of this system sooner, I'm certain Summoner would be a Limited Job... I think it would work much better as one, allowing SE to put resources into giving it all the summons since there'd be no balance issues, although the whole "it's just for Summoner, so egi-glamour isn't a priority" rubs me the wrong way when Performance is seeing constant updates when that's just for Bard... Heck with a Sub Job system slap Bard in there, give it a whole host of Songs rather than the few we have currently, and give us Ranger instead... If they want to get really gimmicky, I could see Thief finally making its way to XIV too, actual stealth and pickpocket gameplay in XIV would be interesting, but certainly not workable in a combat setting.

Not going to happen, of course, but IDK, I think it'd add a bit more of a purpose to the Limited Jobs, and make for some fun customisation on the main Jobs... For now I guess I'll just look at Blue Mage as the same as Fisher; Disappointing to be sure, but it's still potentially enjoyable content to go do. Not sure we'd have gotten it any other way at this point, not with the proper learning mechanic in place, at least.

The feeling of Blue mage could have been gotten by having to go out and learn your rotation from monsters then use it in group content. If i wanted to play a true blu, id replay ffv ff6 ff7 or any of the others, just like if i wanted to play a true rdm i wouldnt play ffxiv or if i wanted to play true drk or true brd. in those games it wasnt even as romantic as most people say it is,you went out learned the best skills then spammed them

What scares me is that YoshiP mentioned Beastmaster and Puppetmaster as potential jobs that could follow along with this system, and I'm watching this going "Nope! Nope nope nope nope nope." If I can only take a select number of beasts (say, who are "brave" enough) into higher end content then so be it. They designed the system this way, so now we, as the community of players, is trying to make it work based on what the dev team has already established.

Unless, of course, every job gets both an independent playstyle and a group playstyle, but they won't.

I want to see how BLU plays out. A lot of htis outrage just comes off as silly because its pretty much "I wanted to Raid as BLU."

Getting afraid of it being Solo content and "what thatll mean for FFXIV". What it might mean is more stuff for people do to, rather than a cookie cutter "Lvl Up to 80 and do raid!" kind of progression. If it sucks, then complain after playing it. But people are losing it and its not even out yet.

OP is completely wrong. Your idea of what Blue Mage is not the definitive Blue Mage. Hard concept to understand that some people who play FFXIV and love Blue Mage wanted to enjoy both completely.

I actually wanted to play Blue Mage AND Play current content with my friends. Checkmate atheists. It's like playing a class you like, but can't glamour. Part of playing a character is how you look, the theme of the main class you play, and bringing something to the table in all content. I believe most people with your sentiments really didn't care about playing Blue Mage in the first place, and are fine with a class they didn't care for not really being part of the game.

If I wanted to arbitrarily farm old content, I would've started collecting Zodiac weapons again or whatever iteration relic for each release. I don't care what mechanics a class has, I prefer the aesthetic over gameplay when I play with other people. Telling me I have to form my own party of schedule people to play with when I come home when the rest of the classes can just /queue and forget it while doing something else if frustrating to no extent. I'd be paying a subscription to wait for a group that I have to recruit for when everyone else can just smash that button and let the system take care of it.

Sorry, I won't be supporting SE w/ a subscription until this gets turned around. Was looking forward to doing end game activities with a Blue Mage skin on whatever mechanics they decided they wanted it to play as, but there are far too many options for mmos out there that let you play a class you like mechanically, aesthetically and with other people without having to do it yourselves, honestly public queueing was made because creating your own parties was so tedious in the first place.

I believe this issue with party forming/duty roulettes will be solved with the addition of trusts, which could in fact help the other jobs in Shadowbringers. If I was another job besides blue mage, I probably would queue up with my trust npcs instead of waiting ages for a tank or healer anyways. That way I could still do dungeons with a party in piece, and it would be a far less annoying and speedy experience. I'm still excited to be able to level in the overworld instead of the same dungeons over again. Upon the release of Shadowbringers however, Blue Mage's level cap should be on par with other jobs at 80 so people can play through Shadowbringers with it if they choose.

I don't pay a monthly sub to play a solo game. Why should it be any different here. Look at SWTOR, when they switched their focus to Solo and Story, the playerbase died. FFXIV balances story, gameplay mechanics, and sociability. BLU is really weak in the sociability factor. I don't want to have to switch to another job just to get access to something as basic as a random-queue dungeon finder and certainly wouldn't be paying a company a monthly fee to do so alone with a bunch of npcs.

For me, the fact its Blue Mage is really irrelevant. They could've announced basically anything else as the limited job and I'd still be unhappy. There's literally no point in this when there's no content to use it in.

And no, stuff I've been doing for 3 years doesn't count as new content. It's the same bullshit with a new coat of paint. At this rate, I doubt I'll even bother unlocking it.

What if people wanted blue mage but wanted to actually have it be relevant to most content? Not me but it occurred to me there may be people like that.

If I had to take a stab in the dark BubblyBoar was using BSM to stand for "Beastmaster" which is a class which . . . uses beast to fight. Square mentioned it as a possible "limited" class, much like they're presently (unfortunately) planning to do to Blue Mage.

Agree with op. I'm shocked Square had the cajones to actually implement something fun and unique, rather than another homogenous watered down rotation machine with nothing but the AF making it as that it's supposed to be (:: cough Summoner cough::(but damn I love bahamut <3))

I doubt we will see much limited jobs
But generally depends on the reception blue mage gives when we can actually play with it ,definitely leave a sour taste for those who wanted to truly main it.

It'll be funny and quiet ironic if blue Mages spells are underwhelming and not balanced in a sense of them being too weak.

Basically, having a template of another caster with Blue Mage flavoured actions would have been a poor choice. Although Red Mage is a success (IMO) in that respect, I'm not sure the essence of BLU would match FFXIV's system without feeling watered down or awkward.

Didnt they state that they will increase the cap slowly of the 5.x patches? So why would it even be at 80 in Shadowbringers? Heck we dont even know if it ever will be on max level since its spells could destroy the raid scene if people take them with them.

Also, the OP is partially right. The necessity for BLU to be implemented in game would require exactly what they stated: Youd need Rotations built into the class, and for monster skills to be simplified and on par with other classes to be a part of end game content. Both of these things would minimize what BLU is as a concept. Some of you are admitting as much yourselves.

Arguments that I read often are:

No Single Player Jobs in MMOs - Youre still able to party with people. You just wont be able to use DF. No one is saying you cant do stuff with other people.

MMOs are multiplayer only - Not really. There is a lot of single player content in most MMOs, because designers know that not everyone wants to spend every moment logged in playing with other people.

We wanted an Iteration of BLU - Which is exactly the point the OP was making. You wanted something that was BLU in name, not in concept. I challenge anyone to tell me how you would rectify the following issue:

Monster Skills would be parred down to be in line with all other classes. This is not avoidable. A rotation/priority skill system would need to be implemented because the playstyle of BLU would shift from SOLO player to party play. This means that, unlike in solo play where your skill is based on using Monster Abilities to overcome situations, in party play its party organization and then being relegated to a caster role, and maximizing DPS/Healing. Just like all other classes. This would mean that the playstyle of BLU is less dependent (if at all) on monster skills, and more dependent on rotations. This would mean there is an optimal order in skills to be useful. It creates a priority system in content where you must "Bring x, y, and z, to be functional". This makes monster skills an illusion of choice - nothing more than a complicated way to learn your class skills. Then, after that how exactly does this get differentiated from other casters, other than monster skills are reskinned versions of other caster skills. Is this the BLU mage people were asking for?

Read old threads. People were asking for BLU to be able to learn monster skills and bring those monster skills to raid. No one was saying "Nah, lets dumb down those skills, minimize the necessity of Monster Skill Learning, add a rotation, and call it BLU. People wanted a 1 to 1 translation.

Ill be locked out of End game Content! - No, youll be locked out from current game content, again, due to balance issues. Youll get access to more and more as the game progresses. Not ideal, but again, how do you get around balance issues. End game/current content would have to be balanced with BLU in mind if you could just PF people into current content.

Other MMOs have done it - So what? We have to be worrying about balance in regards to THIS MMO. Some people have pointed to FFXI as the template, but this is like saying you can just import it from FFXI and it wont cause any problems. I do not believe this to be the case, nor anyone is seriously making this argument.


A final point is this: The OP has a point. While slightly strawman-ish, the overall context is something they have a problem with: People who are claiming they want BLU are typically arguing for a caster class that has BLU as its name, but not as its implementation. SE is giving us BLU as is, and the ability to play content in the game as a BLU, even if it breaks mechanics. That is the closest iteration to what people wanted. Youre getting BLU, youre just not getting the ability to use DF with it, or have immediate access to current content. So when people are complaining about those two aspects, theyre arguing they will give up a lot for the design choice behind BLU just so they can play it in DF and end game content. This is mind boggling, because the whole point of BLU is the monster ability system, and arguing for the other aspects will directly mitigate it.

You are mistaken. I'll be locked out of 60% of the game when it arrives (HW and SB). That's not fun. You know, the whole point of playing a game?

Let's imagine FFXVI (solo FF), coming back to some old recipe, with jobs system.
You travel with your team of 4 people "activ" and others waiting their turn, and here it is, you can have some bluemage.
BUT when you put one of your character in bluemage, he can only be alone.

YES, limited to lvl 50, hard to do end game, (and sorry but bahamut, or alexander are no more endgame content...)

And the "balance matter" but... what?! Why would it be so hard to balance BLU? i mean due to "death" spell ? How many bosses can be affected by spells like "sleep" ? or being slow, reppel. How many fight do we get root, snare, or repel and PLD can sit on their wonderfull skill which theorically avoid all of this?

Tell me why, with all those restriction, BLU could be too strong? then, we have the "classical" damages spells, with dot, direct damages etc... like other jobs get? Also he get some buff to boost the party... like RDM get?

They could have done something similar towards Gun Mage from X-2 and even THAT would have worked and been functional in XIV.

I wanted a job (preferred tank or melee support) that uses enemy abilities as a large part of their gameplay. Nothing else mattered as much as that as long as I could main it in the full game. I much rather have XIV's version of blu over FFV's version put into the game and blu being tied to a mini game.

Honestly? This whole "BLU spells are too stronk and disabling them in duties wouldn't be fun" sounds purely like an excuse. The only spells, that are actually broken (and how to fix them) are:

- Doom (simply make bosses immune against it. bosses are immune to several things like knockback, stun, sleep, paralysis, etc. anyway)
- Level 5 Petrify (see Doom. Also, only works on enemies with a level which is a multiple of 5. If I recall correctly raidbosses usually have a level of ??, so wouldn't work anyway)
- Missile (see Doom)
- Peculiar Light (reduce the magic vunerability from 30% to 10%, so it's basically a trick attack for magic damage)
- Tail Screw (see Doom - doesn't work on many bosses anyway already)
- White Wind (give it an actually realistic healing potency)

After this Bluemage would rather be underpowered, than overpowered and his spell's potencies would have to be massively increased. I mean, srsly. BLU's strongest spell that can be continuously cast has a potency of 130. Even Black Mage's Blizzard 1 has a potency of 180. So BLU would rather need to have all his potencies doubled.

Dont say dumb things you know nothing about many ppl who have desired blue mage MAIN BLUE mage in ffxi or have mostly used blue in all other ff games... you know back when final fantasy games REQUIRED SKILL AND PAITENCES. I remember in xi took about 5 months 2 learn ice breaker and bad breath alone..

Im not mad its limited but i am disappointed in them i can deal with limit jobs what i cant deal with is the cane of all weapon possibility a cane...

1- Finding groups to farm the skills in dungeon, is not possible. I tried recruiting others, but people dont want to do it.
2- I die way to fast and when I try using the tank stance, my DPS is too low, this means farming dungeons solo for the skills is also not possible.

I am confused and feel like I am missing something or or doing something wrong. Could a Blue Mage that has all skills please tell me what I am supposed to do? Its like the class is nothing like what Yoshida promised when he revealed this limited job.

I predicted that new Blue Mages would find themselves in exactly that situation. The decision to lock the primal abilities behind the EX fights and lots of others behind ARR dungeons with no way to use Duty Finder was misguided and short-sighted. This class was designed with no hope of surviving past 2 weeks.

I totally agree with you: I surprisingly found the blue mage more enjoyable than I thought with a much better leveling experience than any other class so far (seriously it should be the default leveling speed, it's so much better and I had a great time) and the fact I need to go around the world and learn spells from enemies was more enjoyable than I thought it would be and makes a completely dead world relevant again! I was sincerely enjoying until I had the massive block of "limitations" that would require me to beg for groups, and now that it's essentially forgotten I have an incomplete blue book with most of the spells coming from primals and other minor dungeons with practically no possible way to get them now. I can't even find linkshells or anything for that. I was glad that I could manage to beat the carnival but the fact it's limited makes me cry so much in what could possibly be a real hybrid class. Except it's just a limited class with limitations because it's supposedly OP but it isn't.

Oh well, I shouldn't be surprised by this anymore and I suppose we'll have to wait 5.55 or 6.0 for a decent blue mage. Just like always.

I predicted that new Blue Mages would find themselves in exactly that situation. The decision to lock the primal abilities behind the EX fights and lots of others behind ARR dungeons with no way to use Duty Finder was misguided and short-sighted. This class was designed with no hope of surviving past 2 weeks.

Same. I saw it from the announcement as well. It was clear to anyone with common sense that they were going to keep the primal acquire rate as low as possible in order to try and pad out the content for as long as they could.

It only made the players resent the developers.

I'm not mad about it being a limited job, I'm made that the job is no good to me as a casual/mostly-solo player, because I'll never be able to unlock the majority of its spells or complete the masked carnivale.

Not true, a friend of mine on was excited for blue mage and wanted to play it.
He is happy with results but disappointed at the same time that some of the fights inside arena are very hard and that he says the blue mage was talked about in high regard as a power house the whole reason it is a limited job and the job is weak.
He liked the challenge but at the same time didn't feel like restarting and the moved especially on shiva he could never learn ever which isn't the true blue mage way he said.

He said he play it more if shadowbringer expansion does something for it but he put it on shelf for now.
