Whenever ninja's insist on overwriting my WAR's slashing debuff over and over again, I switch to storms path instead.

Options - Debuff Icons
[ ] Show only buffs and debuffs applied by me on enemies
[ ] Show only debuffs and debuffs applied by me on non-enemies
[ ] Stack debuffs not applied by me (timer will show the longest duration in stack)
Currently, when I'm on my healer, the current option of "show only buffs and debuffs applied by me" will hide tank debuffs except on the party list. It also won't show up on the focus target. As a healer (especially when playing the SCH), I don't really care that much about the debuffs on enemy targets other people apply, but I really do care about the debuffs on all party members, especially so on the tank.
The current option shows no consideration for the different needs of the different roles. Please convey to the UI team that they should think about this for future UI implementations.
To me, the issue isn't the displaying of all the debuffs and dots, but actually the raid bosses being full and no more can be added until something wears off or is overwritten by the same player. :| I do remember also that SE mentioned in the old patches that the limit is 60. In 24-man content only 3 dots from every class would mean not everyone could fit theirs in. During hunts I lost count how many times "aero does xx dmg (no effect)" messages I got.
I just don't know how it counts towards the number when the boss have something like immunity to virus.
After a certain number of debuffs, don't new additional remove older debuffs? Sometimes when I use Wildfire, it sticks for 5-7 seconds then the icon disappears and then I never see the explosion/damage and it doesn't show up
While I'm not sure why that's happening, no. Older debuffs won't be pushed off unless it's a debuff that doesn't stack. You can have multiple Bio, Miasma, and Bio 2 icons for example.
Something like Dancing Edge can be overwritten since they don't want it to stack multiple times (would make it OP). So maybe Wildfire is sometimes getting caught in that? You apply Wildfire, then another MCH does the same and the game removes yours?
You know.. some of this stuff can be fix on your side... Since there are so many debuffs on the Mob like the pic.. I have my UI set to ONLY show my Debuffs on the Mobs HP bar... That way I don't confuse my debuffs from others debuffs. That way I know what debuffs I have up and what I don't...
Also if I see I know I had my debuffs up, then one disappears before the other, I know I have another person that is applying the debuff and I know that this one debuff is not a stackable debuff. (EX: Impulse Drive before Chaos Thrust.)
A simple solution could be to have the upper section of the targets name show "your DoTs" and the bottom portion show party/alliance buffs. That way you don't have to rewrite the way the bottom portion currently displays debuffs but rather just provide a top version that specializes in specifically only showing your debuffs on target.
It would help, but at the same time I have to wonder... is there any benefit whatsoever to showing allied DoTs except perhaps to time turning off Foe Requiem when being extremely mana-conservative? Apart from that all we really need to see are status effects (Stun, Petrify, Paralysis, Bind, Heavy, Slow, Evasion Down) and vulnerability debuffs that affect our damage type (e.g. Rook Hypercharge, Disembowel, Trick Attack for a ranged dps; Bishop Hypercharge, Foe Requiem, Trick Attack for a caster dps). The entire DoT checking component could be done via a color-shifted area of the enemy's HP bar, showing how much health, assuming no crits or average crit rate, will be consumed via attached DoTs. Or you could select which you want shown and under what conditions. None of this is stuff we haven't seen in other MMOs or their add-ons already.
Please excuse the absolute newb questions... I will be 1000% honest, I haven't been playing for that long, and the only class I really play is SMN.
First, I am finding conflicting information... Some that say the cap to display is 30, and overall is 60...
Does that mean (below 60) that the spell I cannot get to show up is just not being displayed, but the DOT is still ticking? (And if so, does it still count toward Fester?) How can you tell if it is not being counted for anything at all due to the number of debuffs being over 60?
(Also, while Bio I and Miasma I have similar duration times, and Bio II has ~double their duration), it does make things a little more confusing to actually track when you can't see them.... Particularly when something weird happens during the encounter. (Boss flies away before I've finished putting all three DOTs up, I had to do something between DOT casts which affects synchronicity of DOTs, etc.)
As previously mentioned - I am couching this because I don't really feel like being trolled/flamed... It is entirely plausible that there are simply too many DOTs/debuffs between all classes in the game to do this with, and if so, I concede the point without argument...
But is it possible to have an option such as "show only my debuffs and these specified debuffs:" where a checklist then follows?
I would love to use the "show only my debuffs" - but then what about other peoples' Foe's? Virus/Immunity? etc... Having this 'enable' option (similar to the menu already in use for Subcommand Settings*) would mean I could specify exactly which debuffs I want to see, as opposed to only being able to see everything or nothing but mine.
In order to shorten this checklist, one could also:
- Only use the checklist for debuffs, not DOTs. Basically, anything that does more than damage. (I have no idea how many of these there are! SMN might have something like 6 all on its own? (Tri-bind's Stun, Virus (+ Immunity), Heavy, & Malady) Though most of those are shared with other classes, too...)
- Classify debuffs - IE: MDEF down vs DOT vs Immunity to certain spells, etc. Foes is nice to see, but really... In the middle of the fight, i'm not checking whether Foe's is up. I am trusting the BRD to do their job to the best of their ability, while I do mine... (But maybe because we have a good Bard. ;)) I do check to see if the boss has Immunity before applying Virus, and I couldn't possibly care less as to whether the DRG has a DOT up.... (That said, apparently other classes do care about specific abilities, so this might still be oversimplified.)
- Narrow the list down by entire classes - I don't think there's anything that a DRG could possibly do that I would, at all, care about. Maybe whether he stunned/slowed something? But I would like to know if the SCH used Virus and the mob were still under Immunity. That said, the WHM could ALSO have used Virus (and triggered Immunity); however, as it is a SCH skill, it may or may not matter which job actually cast it, only that it is in the ARC (SMN/SCH) ability tree. At that point, I deselect DRG (and any other class that doesn't have anything which affects me), and their stuff goes off my bar to compensate for the visual 30-ability cap.
While this list might simplify (or oversimplify) the amount of stuff the user has to look at during customization, there are addons for wow (IE: WeakAuras, TidyPlates/PlateBuffs, etc) which basically do the same thing, and do so by having the user customize each spell individually. (And I cannot imagine that WoW has a substantially higher number of buffs/debuffs/DOTs as compared to FFXIV, either before or after they consolidated a lot of stuff. (The addons were around before and after that happened))
Since it's optional, if someone doesn't really want to look at the lot of them, they don't have to - they have the all-or-nothing options that currently exist. But for people who WANT to customize their UI to that level of detail, they can...
* The menu I was referring to can be seen by going to: Character Config -> Item Settings -> Inventory Settings -> Subcommand Customization -> Open
Also, I've seen games do this - WoW's PlateBuffs addon, for example. However, unless we can scroll out further, I don't really see this as helpful. (maybe because I'm short for a Mi'quote....) Most of the time, for raid bosses (looking at you, weepy tentacle-hairball boss), the "top" of them is so far off my screen that I can't see the HP bar anyway. (I can barely see her top hair root to watch for changes when standing near her, I couldn't imagine playing as a lala....)
Edit: Wait, maybe I mis-read... I've seen buffs/debuffs on top of the HP bars above the enemy's heads (example below), but in re-reading, you might have meant above/below your target bar? (I was thinking above meant above the target, while below was the target bar, but then... I forgot that I had moved my target bar to the bottom of the screen! lol)

That is correct. If there are, say, 35 status effects (dots, buffs and debuffs) on a mob, your dot will take effect and it will tick (and yes, Fester will acknowledge its existence), but you can't see the icon. And if you keep manual count and reapply it with some likely clipping, I've heard people say it still won't show up even if there are less than 30 effects on the boss unless you let it drop off entirely before reapplying it. I haven't tried this out myself though (my main healer being Scholar), so I can't say for certain if it's true or not.
Now that I have no good solution for. I've heard people mention using Fester and judging by its damage, but... that doesn't seem like a very efficient way (since if all your dots fell off or didn't take effect, you'll have wasted an Aetherstack).
This I would love. Alternatively, "show only my debuffs and non-stackable debuffs" -- i.e. those that cannot be duplicated, such as Virus (and immunity), Heavy, Slow, Foe's, Storm's Path/Eye (and similar damage-affecting debuffs) and so on.
(If this setting also affects player characters, I suppose it'd include non-stackable buffs as well.)
It doesn't much matter if it's a Scholar or a Summoner who uses it, no (though it's still good to see if it has been used, so you don't waste your Virus cooldown because the boss still had 5 seconds left of its immunity...). It tends to annoy me when WHM/BLM use it, since they have the non-traited version that only affects physical damage -- especially when they use it on bosses that have plenty of magical attacks -_- I've seen one BLM (if I remember correctly) using it every time immunity fell off in precisely such a fight (I forget which, though). With a macro to reveal their annoyingly well-timed casts. And with at least two scholars and one or two summoners in the alliances.
Couldn't you just turn off the rest of the teams DoTs? I did this for awhile and everything worked out fine.
It doesn't help the issue with "max 60 effects on the mob" though. Even if you don't see them, they're there, and WILL prevent yours from taking effect if there are 60 effects already present. It's not too likely to happen outside of 24-man content, of course, but...
Are we sure this is a universal bug that everyone deals with? When I've had my settings to display my DoTs only I always see mone, it's not until I use focus target that mine are not present. I did a few WC runs last night with my settings like this and didn't see a drop, granted I also don't display other player skills. The only time I've noticed my DoTs not displaying is during hunts that the whole server shows up, but with that the entire game goes under in performance. Of course it could be I just don't notice it while it's happening, none the less this is still something that they should fix.
Really? Never knew that, I just assumed it was a server thing, like when DoTs skip on their count, I've seen that happen much more then them dropping off. Admittedly handling DoTs as a BRD is a breeze with Iron Jaws and given how much use that skill has its likely the reason I never really noticed. Now that this has been pointed out its going to stick out like a sore thumb and bother me when it happens lol.
Just as an FYI, Aeolian Edge costs more TP and only does more damage if it's sweetspotted. A lot of NINs, myself included, kinda default to Dancing Edge as a "safe" attack unless we're certain the debuff is still fresh + we're certain we can get that sweetspot, because otherwise it's just spending more TP for potentially less damage.
Try not to think of it as the NIN intentionally trolling the WAR, in other words.
You can, but then vital information like Virus/Antibody status, Trick Attack, Slashing Resistance-down, INT-down etc. disappear because that display toggle doesn't have any contingencies.
If you play a class that has a debuff another class can overwrite (see: WAR and NIN, regarding slashing resistance) or play a healer it makes it much harder to do your job properly.
Yes, this is a issue that I want them to fix aswell. I have been playing as an Summoner the past few months and I noticed that in 24 man or more (Hunts), my dots go *POOF*. I can see that the boss got damaged and my dots are on him, but I can not see the duration, which makes me recast the dots way too early or to late, which decreases my damage output.
It also makes me do less dps then normal which means my fellow partymembers need to do the missing dps, that I would normaly have done. I hope they fix this with 4.0.
I would just like to drop this in here since we are talking about disappearing DoTs

The focus target doesn't keep your debuffs as first in line priority. The debuffs are still there. The only way your debuffs could fade is if the boss had 60 debuffs/buffs and a mechanic triggered a buff, forcing yours off or if the boss cleanses it, like in HullBreaker hard.
This doesn't happen either. You still see those debuffs.
The only downside is you don't see something like trick attack and sometimes your buffs will get overlapped by something else and you won't be sure what's going on (eye and dancing edge, delirium and dragon kick).
