Think the GC ears/nails seal the deal on it
"You'll never play as a Viera, but you can dress up like one"
Give them larger, more pronounced, animal-like paw/hands and feet with some customization for the length/point of their claws and you'd have some moderate differences. That being said, yes, there would be a need to re-design some of their armor to fit their shape but it's likely much easier to alter gloves/boots/sleeves of robes than body/leg armor and likely just as difficult to alter hats/helms.
This ain't Ivalice. Please, stop trying to make this Ivalice. If you wanna play a game with Viera in it you have the entire Tactics series and 12. Implanting the Viera suddenly into the lore would show a poor dedication to actually building a world that is uniquely FF14's Hydaelyn.
The Viera already have weird feet (Their most animal like feature lol), which is the big reason why devs said "no" to a beastman race. Sorry, but if they modified foot wear for the Viera and kept their "No beastman rule because of weird feet" people would be plenty mad and reasonably so. Besides the weird feet, they're incredibly similar to just tall people. They're too close to Elezen in posture, attitude, and appearance. You could dye the bunny ears your hair color and be an Elezen or Roegadyn and you'd probably easily be able to roleplay as one.
No, FFXIV is not in Vana'diel, entirely separate. They made the current races similar to FFXI races to make it easier for FFXI players to transition over to a new game, while having a sense of familiarity. That's a legitimate reason for it, Viera on the other hand would serve no purpose but to appeal to those who want to turn FFXIV into Final Fanservice Online.
Well, adding in a race or two that people liked a lot from other Final Fantasy games series isn't bad. Personally, I've wanted to play with my own Viera character since FFXII. Fan service or not, I think it'd be a great idea to include them in XIV and giving people a wider option of what kind of character they want to play as. Not trying to say SE should allow putting every fan favorite race into the game, but just adding one or two just to make what few fans want it happy should be fine. ^^
Ok, Miqo'te was fanservice for XI (This isn't Vana'diel). Just about everything in xiv now is fanservice. Gold Saucer (This isn't Midgar), the witch from FF1 (This isn't Melmond), The lalafell with the cat ear hoodie, Krille (This isn't FF5), Lightning appearing (do I even have to). Adding a Viera wouldn't even change anything but add more lore and a new species to the mix. Turn ffxiv into fanservice? Too late. Now find another reason.
I found it silly enough when Au Ra just appeared and it was all like "Yeah, they were always here, no big deal". I mean, do we even know what they are? All I've read is that they're succubus like, well, then are they related to succubi? It seems like SE themselves don't know.
Gold Saucer? The lore for that made sense, so it's accepted. Matoya was a stretch, but again she didn't pop out of thin air like Viera would, Krile in FFXIV is more than different enough from Krile in FFV and Lightning was ridiculous which is why I hope they don't pull more of that.
But again, in the end SE has already decided on a race. They said they decided on Au Ra very early on into FFXIV ARR, so it's safe to assume they've chosen one for 4.0. If it's Viera? Well, I'll deal with it. If it's not, you'll have to deal with it (but instead we'll see more "Why not Viera?!?!!" threads). Not point in discussing what's already decided.
This is a general discussion forum where we're free to discuss topics like this (just pointing this out). And a good reason to talk about Veira's here is so others can share their ideas and opinions about the race, not shoot down any opportunity to talk about it. If you don't like the idea of people talking about this, there's always a new thread you can find interest in.
My point that if it's already decided, and talking about it won't change that. Besides, the only discussion going on in here is "I don't want it", "I want it", "How can you want it?" and "How can you not want it?". Not that I'm helping to change that.
That being said, I definitely wouldn't mind a race with bunny ears that's different from Viera. To give an example, a race with height in between that of a Lalafell and the shortest female Au Ra but with bunny ears. Maybe even have them be furry, why not? We have skin, kinda scaley, but no furry race yet. Now that I think about it, what I'm describing is pretty much Moogles from FFXII but taller and without the pom pom.
I want no fur on them. The art they showed of the viera is how I want them to look. They even have 2 tribes, if SE really wants FF to last like FFXI lasted they really should think about how to go about the future of expansions. Viera expansion is there.....anything else is making the same mistake (in my opinion) of not choosing them.
This post is unrelated to my stance with Viera, but I just wanted to respond to something because it makes little sense.
Please do tell me how a single race is going to be the life or death of FFXIV? FFXI didn't have Viera, but it lasted over a decade. Why? Because it built up a loyal fanbase, not due to excessive fanservice, but because they built a great world, great lore, great environments, not because they pandered to the crowd that would claim the game would not last if they didn't add their favourite Final Fantasy race. Genuine question, how did you even make the connection? Unless I'm reading into your post too much, in which case I apologize.
Nothing is fully decided with SE. An april fools joke was minion battles and guess what, we have it now. Yoshi saying it'd be too similar to miqo'tes is obviously a lazy answer as anyone would shrug it off with pinpoint reasons as too why they're different. We're not telling them to give it too us as most are joking with "GIVE US VIERA SE" or something, just stating our reasons and debates as to why we want this. No point, well theres no point discussing inventory space, yet its wanted to be increased by alot of people, so they make discussion threads about it.
No one said life or death. Read again, there are ingredients that add a lot of value to things. Adding female roegadyn was one of these values. It's not hard to see the difference between ARR and what FFXIV was before that. Viera adds the same kind of value that I don't see any other race adding. Any value you add to anything extends the life of the product. It's not rocket science, it's just how the world works. More value extends the product's shelf life into more years. Passing on them again is a negative (more than you realize). After next expansion they lose the chance to ever add them in any meaningful way.
Of course it adds value, in the same manner a new minion adds value to the game, but it a few races will not affect the overall health of the game. Adding Viera won't add a year or two into the game, meaningful content will but we all know that. A prime example being, again (I know how people hate the mention of it, but w/e) WoW. It has 3 "cute" races, 4 if you find Pandaren cute (I know some do) and yet it's 11 years old. What does it have? Variety. From Worgen, Pandaren, Goblins, Orcs, Trolls, and even Draenei, they have a lot of variety.
Ghastly, who's been a rather active poster in this thread seem like s/he doesn't want them to be unique, and that goes for quite a lot of people here. I did suggest what I'd like to see, but they are no longer the "Viera" that people requested once you change them so drastically. As for how they can be introduced lore wise, WoW does it incredibly well, they centered the expansion around the new race's continent along with their own starting zones (talking specifically about Pandaren) but FFXIV's dev team just slaps them on with little regard to the lore, but this isn't the first time they've messed with lore nor will it be the last.
Eh, SE seemed to create a precedence when it comes to fanservice now...I'd even go so far as to say the creation of it is basically to upgrade FFXI itself for fanservice to cater to a fanbase. I really don't see adding more races like Viera as any different a decision than keeping Hume, Elvaan, Galka, Tarutaru and Mithra. It's fanservice. If they weren't relying on fanservice with that decision, they'd have made a group of new races instead (keeping only the human-trope).
Honestly don't blame SE though...had they decided to go with Ivalice races for FFXIV, I'd have bought the game on release day (I'd choose Mog and Bangaa!). It's the same result just aimed at a different audience. That being said, I hope any future endeavors to add new races, SE puts more effort into them...
I've got nothing to say about why the races are similar in design to FFXI's (though it was during a time when Tanaka was the head of FFXIV's team. It's also realistic to believe the reason why they look similar to FFXI's races is exactly as Colorful said. Familiarity... however familiarity clearly didn't do anything to keep the game afloat back then), however it has been confirmed that Vana'diel and Ivalice are not found on Hydaelyn.

Guess what? The Viangaa were an "April Fools" joke too, yet they have actually been referenced in-game. Different enough from both Viera and Bangaa (as are Galka/Roegadyn, Mithra/Mi'qote, and Tarutaru/Lalafell), I think their actual implementation would serve as a magnet for those who want to play/would have played 1) Viera, 2) Bangaa, 3) an easily-identifiable "non-human" race, and possibly even 4) Burmecian (if implemented as-is).
Alas, current racial design policies against having to redesign gear around snouts and digitigrade feet would mean that they could only be implemented "as-is" as yet another non-playable "beastman" race.
I will continue to hold out hope, however.
Another way that Viera distinguish themselves are their height; excluding player-made characters, Fran is the tallest playable female character in the Final Fantasy series without her ears. If we include her ears and player-made characters, she's still the tallest (without her ears, she's slightly smaller than female Elezen with the slider set to 50). If Fran is the height Viera would be with the slider set at 50, she would be around 30ish cm taller than Miqo'te and Au Ra females. With her ears, it's something like 60-70ish cm taller than the other two little-bit-beastly races, which would explain why they don't quite fill the Viera-niche.

Size Is Everything (damn, they grow 'em big in Eorzea).
Would not surprise me if Viangaa ends up being a thing in the future. They were already mentioned in last year's moonfair festival and the model already exists.
I don't think they'll be a playable race, but I can see them either as a beast tribe or at the very least a minion. The Au Ra was very briefly mentioned in Odin minion's description way before Yugiri was shown
Theirs little to no lore based on the Au Ra's. Most is just, "Dragon people, come from the east, outcasts." They really needed something more to add other than saying, "oh, they've been here the whole time, nothing new." An entire area dedicated to their people would've been better in my opinion, and i hope they'd do that for the next race if one comes out.
"sh-shut up and stop giving arguments!". Nice retort, since Colorful made some good points. And yeah, fans whining repeatedly that their favorite [thing] isn't in a game in a franchise. Such threads have no worth or merit beyond filling up page space in the "common rabble" section of any online game's forum.
I have 3-4 posts in 12 pages and you're calling me out? Watch yourself, if you have no clue what you're talking about I advise you to look elsewhere.
Race poll doesn't matter
All the threads in this forum don't matter because the same people post in them
Why have a forum?
Nothing matters
Why have a hair contest in the forum in the first place
Just because they won't add a WoW beast tribe race doesn't mean that all of a sudden their official forums have no meaning.
Nice try though
