To be fair, I don't see any misinformation. The link he sent are actual numbers of sales. It may only be EU and retail but those numbers aren't really something to be proud of. Granted this is not everyone who bought the game, obviously. Let us not pretend it is a good thing and try to wish it away though. We should be sad it didn't sell better and move on. Not defend it with random excuses on why it did not sell well.

I bought my copy of HW on GMG when it went up for pre-order, I'm sure I wasn't the only one, so quite a few sales there even before release.

Also, people might buy ESO now but, as someone who tried it on PC release, it has little longetivity imo.

The misinformation comes from the thread title "Disappointing Sales. The Elder Scrolls Online outsells Heavensward." Followed by a link to a website posting retail only sales of games in the UK for only the last week. The evidence does not match the implied conclusion in the thread title.

Obviously these numbers don't tell the whole story, but FFXIV has had the PS4 MMO scene on lock(unless you count DCUO-ugh) so ESO is the first real competition it has. It's new to the PS4, B2P is always going to be more welcoming then P2P, and ESO apparently has more customizable options, so of course it's going to lure people in.

The title is misleading but anyone who can read the article can see otherwise. It doesn't require any hand holding to understand such simplified data. Could he have worded the title differently? Yes. Is it misleading? Yes. But anyone who just takes the title as fact and doesn't read the link he has given is fooling themselves.

Elder Scrolls has been advertised quite heavily in the UK (its on all the buses and billboards), quite obvious it'll sell in larger volumes really not to mention being on Xbox and lastly lets not forget Heavensward is an expansion to even be in the top 10 is quite an accomplishment.

you are right guy you have me convinced, HW is a complete failure and SE is considering pay to win as we speak.

Nevermind that this game is mostly sold through its own online store and is still a steam top seller, we are just doomed, retail is where the real money is at for mmos and pc games.

Doesn't neccisarily mean much. That said, new players and existing players without 50's or advanced story progress have litterally no reason at all to buy the expansion. There's nothing in it, besides access to the race, that can even be used by a sub-50 or a 50 that hasn't finished all the story quests it's locked behind.

This is pretty much a mistake in my opinion. An expansion needs to have something interesting for every type of player, casual to hardcore, max level and low level. The race, if you even like it (seems extremely lazy to me) is not much of a draw since XIV is not a game that really encourages rolling Alts. You never actually need more than one character in this game.

Honestly, I don't really care about the whole 'my game's dick is bigger than your game's bologna sandwiches' nonsense. ESO is a 'once and done' purchase whereas XIV is a constant monetary commitment where, after just 5-6 months, you've not only spent enough to buy a copy of ESO, you're going to be doing it again 5-6 months later and yet again 5-6 months after that. And that's not counting what you spent on the expansion rights themselves. So ESO is raking in slightly more than Heavensward. If ESO intends to stay viable it's going to need to have some great stuff in that cash shop, they're relying heavily on the 'kindness' of players.

ESO is a base game. Heavensward is an expansion.

I'd like to see GFK Chart-Tracks sources and methods. How do they track sales, how accurate are they, what's coverage, etc.

Regardless, thread is clearly clickbait. OP makes a broad-ranging general statement about sales based off a single, questionable website that only deals in UK sales.

For your information OP, I was at my local Tsutaya here in Japan, and Heavensward was number 1 on the sales charts. SE has nothing to worry about.

The Elder Scrolls has a strong fanbase behind it and some people were mistaken into thinking "It's Elder Scrolls with co-op" when it turned out to be YET ANOTHER MMO. (Shocker. I know. Hence why I sure as hell didn't buy it. Desecrating my games.)

What you really need to go by is active players. Because of keys banned from people buying third party, people who quit, people who managed to get refunds...

The saddest thing is ESO is everywhere I look and in every store. Whereas FFXIV before and with Heavensward was mostly special order. I live in US south of Chicago in a fairly decent populated city. Only one store was stocking retail shelves and only 2 others were doing pre orders. Bestbuy and Gamestop were the only two stocking and doing preorders. And BB didn't have any on shelf if you did not preorder. I really am not surprised. As much as I personally love FF franchise it is not a shared view among the masses. Don't get me wrong we all are here cause we love FF. But that is not the majority of MMO players I'm afraid to admit. Still I love my time here.

I love this game as much as the next guy, hence why I'm subbed to it and posting on the official forums, but the Elder Scrolls name carries a lot of weight these days. Arguably, just as much weight as Final Fantasy at least in the West anyway. Skyrim sold 20 million units. I think the entire XIII saga combined may have sold like 9-10 million. I might be off on those FFXIII numbers, but point is, there's nothing even remotely absurd about ESO outselling Heavensward in any region outside of Japan, especially since it doesn't have a sub fee anymore.

The difference with your numbers is in part the quality. If you're talking preorders and day one sales only, then saying "Skyrim sold more than XIII" is valid as to ES games selling more in general. BUT, if you're taking in to account sales numbers from months, or even weeks later, then that is why you see such a huge difference. Even with all the bugs at launch, Skyrim was considered to be a vastly superior game by the masses, (myself included), than the first XIII was. You'll fine very few fans who truly liked XIII, much less that rank it as one of their favorite FF games. Meanwhile Skyrim is considered by many fans to be the best in the series. Simple word of mouth is what would cause the differences in sales between these two games alone.....

Then with XIII's sequels you have to count in that people were so disappointed by XIII itself that the number of people who would buy XIII-2 dropped off entirely, with numbers dropping even further by XIII-3. You also have to account that people wouldn't be buying the XIII sequels just because they didn't play XIII all the way through, or at all, and as such wouldn't want to play the sequels due to not knowing the story......

I'm not arguing that ES games sell better in the US than FF games. I'm just saying that like the OP of this thread, you're not taking all factors into account, and are simply basing your argument off of a small sample of data. You also can't base over all sale numbers on one region alone. Saying "Disappointing Sales" purely based off of one game selling better in one region is complete foolishness. Not to mention the other factors that other posters in this thread have brought up such as the fact that this doesn't include digital sales, or that this is an expansion, (one gated by having to have completed the majority of the original game, no less), in comparison to a full fledged game. If you're going to judge sales as being "disappointing" then you have to take in sales world wide and across multiple platforms. The sample size for the information is far too small to jump to the conclusion the OP gave....

It was also outsold by 'Yoshi's Woolly World' which is a Wii U exclusive...

FFXIV already beat ESO -- that's why ESO went F2P (or B2P, whatever), and FFXIV still has a subscription. :)

It's common knowledge that F2P/B2P games move more clients than subscription games... but that's totally irrelevant, because P2P games make more money from subs, not client sale volume.

Also, I hope everyone realizes that the second link posted in the OP is from 2013. So unless we've developed time travel, that's like not relevant at all to anything.

I'm a little surprised that Elder Scrolls Online outsold Heavensward considering the hype, but I've been playing the game for the last week and it feels alive, so I'm really not worried about it.
