Not gonna lie, I spent all my seals on sp scrolls from all Three nations, so I was kind of hoping for a quest situation for the chocobo whistle. Looks like I'll be grinding the caravan quest for a good while, depending.

True, but there also doesn't need to be a pre-requisite to enjoy each and every thing that is implemented in the game. For example: it makes sense for the Grand Companies to give you the little quests before opening the dungeons to you because they might want to see how good of a candidate you are for those tasks, but for an airship ticket, or a rent-a-chocobo? I would not have opposed if that was the case (like FFXI), but IMO development is not handing anything to the players in this case; if so, then there should have also been a pre-req for teleportation.
I'm glad I saved all 5750 seals for gridania. Slightly off-topic question for someone. We know recruit is the first rank. Do we know if they are implementing the full spectrum of ranks or just the next couple? My thought is over the next few patches they will release a few ranks and work that into the story line. Does anyone know anything?
The only thing in this game with a prerequisite is the Grand Companies.
There is supposed to be a pre requ for Teleportation where in you had to go to the camp first. They broke that by allowing you to teleport people who had not yet been there.
This game hands us everything, I don't think it's too much to ask for at least a small piece of lore in the form of a quest to get an airship pass and a personal chocobo. I'm not asking them to make it impossibly hard..
This is untrue. Many quests in the game have prerequisites, and many quests are prereqs for obtaining abilities.Quote:

Best part is I almost never run anywhere to begin with due to anima being so easy. I've no use for a chocobo or an airship, I have alts to teleport me anywhere and everywhere. Even that's overkill considering I've probably got about 270 anima right now spread across my three characters.
Best use I can see for these chocobos is to initiative a leve, hop on your chocobo and then running it to your mobs. Sounds great for gathering leves where your nodes are far away. I can't see a use for them at all other than travel between aetheryte and camp. Even airships I'll still opt to teleport than run to the docks.
This is exactly my problem with it. Why even have rentals if everyone is going to have their own personal chocobo that's faster, doesn't cost anything, and can be called on anywhere? Rentals should at least cover something in the game in order to be worth adding, and that something can be accomplished by a gap between people who are able do a quest and those who are not.
I also find it somewhat annoying that we can still get aggro and get knocked off them by it like in FFXIII, rather than every other game in the series. Getting attacked by enemies while on a chocobo isn't very Final Fantasy.
Dont they always create lore in game or out when implementing something new?
Also as far as chocobo usefulness, you'll run somewhere if you want to beat up some enemies, explore a dungeon, etc. I mean in XI, once you got your license, did you still run places or rent chocobos whenever possible? Also alot of the out of the way areas will be alot more accessible with chocobo transportation. So warp, mount up, and then dismount at the place of interest.
Plus you can get knocked off your chocobo anyway.
They'll be using chocobos in battle at some point, so that makes sense. And rentals are there so people under a certain level can have something to ride as well. The XIV chocobo system is probably going to have more depth to it than any before it once things are said and done.
And for those of you with alts all over, will you keep those alts once the game starts charging? Even if you do, people had alts in XI to do white mage porting, yet there was still reason to ride Chocobos to out of the way areas (much like here) and reason to dismount (exploration of dungeons, instanced areas, cutscenes for battles, or just battles in general).
So what I got from all these posts is this:
1. People have forgotten that it they are making the game for people starting so they have to work for their chocobo's unlike everyone pre this rushed to 50 and done all the quests prior to this release making it a "hand me" (hint: start over fresh and then tell me if it is just handing to you)
2. People have forgotten that to advance in ranks in the GC's you have to spend your Seal's. They have not stated the Seal cost for an advancement, and which level you must be to get your chocobo. So the chocobo is not just a mere 3000 seals because there is other costs that go into it.
3. This is the G.C. and these are general issue Chocobos, like actually joining the military and being given the material's needed to be a useful tool for the GC. We are not on a Chocobo farm trying to convince the owner to trust us with his steed's or having to raise one (yet) from egg. These are war bred Chocobos given to the troops. (Last I checked when I went to boot camp they didn't say "hey so this is where your boot's and clothes came from, and look this gun that you are about to shoot you have to work for it." No you are given it and you have to maintain it, care for it, that's it.
I wonder how long until we can get Chocobo Feather Dye, so we can customize our personal choco.
Err.. are you ok? I did answer your question.
how did i not answer your question? You asked if FFXI is spoon feeding and i believe you were referring to the chocobo riding example. If you care to look back at my reply, i said i had quit back when it was rentals and not owning, where'd you'd blow into a whistle and by some miracle a frickn bird materializes under your @$$.
I'm spinning everything? You're the one nitpicking here on the chocobo example. I'm drawing attention to a much bigger picture.
I argue for keeping this game challenging, rewarding and fun to play. Being handed crap to me right away, whether it's teleports, Airships, Chocobos, mobs in a leve quest is not my idea of fun nor my understanding or expectation of an RPG, moreso MMORPG and certainly not FF.
Was kinda hoping the seal cost for the personal chocobo would actually be a bit more because 3000 seems a bit low to me. I mean, its a personal chocobo, usually that'd be something to really work towards. Plus, with the addition of repeatable quests for the GC's, i don't see why it couldn't have been more. Oh well, hopefully the future additions will be a quite a bit more work like the breeding!
Where is the motivation to even do these repeatable quests? The gear the companies have are mostly trash and anyone who has beaten the ogre in Darkhold will have enough seals to get the chocobo. That was another error too, giving seals for a dungeon run that doesn't even require a completion.
Exactly, no motivation at all. Not at this point at least but still.. making the price higher would have made the repeatable quests have a bit more weight. People will probably do them once just to see what it is and forget about them till the next patch which -MIGHT- allow for a little motivation. Can only hope that getting a chocobo wont be as easy as just joining the company and maybe going up one rank for choosing which you'll stay with.
Yoshi P.. Seriously...
Next Halloween, put in a long even quest that lets us unlock a Zombie Chocobo variant, would be awesome.
Magitek Chocobo!!!
There's been a lot of discussion about whether or not the requirements for obtaining a personal chocobo were too lax, or whether or not they should be more rigorous. I asked Yoshida about the reasoning behind the implementation and he said that his first and foremost goal is that everyone be able to easily make use of the new transportation methods.
Agreed. Once they get the initial implementation down solid, then go with additional content like breeding/racing/customizations/etc. If they do something similar to what I outlined in the chocobo thread, I'll be a happy camper.

There should be a quest that you have to complete to be able to run! You start the game WALKING ONLY!
...same with sitting. Up until rank 10, you haven't unlocked the "My Knees Work!" ability. (Slot cost: 7)
But I want a Chocobo Boss fight that takes a 4 party alliance with specific Jobs to beat and takes hours of walking with sneak/vis which wears off in random timeframes for no apparent reason causing our group to fight Hi-Level Aggro Mobs that keep killing half the PT members and our White Mages esp. keep getting killed trying to heal everybody so we have to wait another 30 mins for each KO'd character to get back to our current position because they forgot to set there homepoint at the nearest crystal and when we finally beat the Boss Choco we find that 1/3 of the peeps forgot to properly activate the quest, another 1/3 forgot to click on the key item after the fight and the remaining 1/3 are the Uber-Geared Hi-Lvls that vow to never help with this run again.
Gimmie HARDCORE!
Well, one can hope that Bred Chocobo's might have an inventory space and be faster depending on the quality of chocobo you are able to breed, leading to it being even more beneficial than the company version.
Maybe they'll even add a sprint function for the Bred type, which can improve and decrease the sprint duration depending on the quality leading to the possibility of racing as well.
Maybe Maybe they'll even go as far as to add Taming Weapons like in FF10, and we'll be able to find chocobo's in the wild with random stats, and when we defeat one with a taming weapon, it goes into our stable ;o
im sorry, wtf is that in ur sig?
I'm just disappointed the chocobo flag quest won't be in Ishgard like I hoped. :(
For a nation that (maybe) prides itself on mounts it woulda made sense.
How about adding a chocobo relevant quest as a prerequisite to move beyond recruit in the Grand company?
3k is very easy to achieve... Heck I have over 6000 right now (thats over 6000 in each city), without any access to repeatable content.
Please, SE. Dont' make the augmented chocobo you can purchase from GC be so easy as plopping down some seals at the counter. You already established a chocobo plague in your background stories, don't squander that! The story specifically says that they cannot rent out chocobos because there are so few healthy ones to go around...
