Two reasons why an eviction system is INEVITABLE.

Lets turn this around for a second Intaki. What entitles you to someones plot who does not have a subscription at the moment? More specifically, because I know what shes put into the game, what entitles you to my wifes plot considering the following -
She bought the game when it came out as ARR and has had an active subscription from that point until her surgery.
She bought a lot of the micro transaction items such Odins horse, metallic dyes, the $20 wedding, upgraded to CE to get the fat chocobo, bought a stuffed moogle for the in game moogle delivery minion, paid to watch that Japanese event to get in game Moogle glamour items, paid to transfer from a high population to a medium population server, gone through 2 fantasias, referred 8 friends, 4 of which maintain active subscriptions.

I reckon that even with a subscription that expired 5 months ago, my wife has invested more cash into this game than you have, and certainly a lot more than your average player who came to the party late and couldn't find a house. So what entitles you to her plot of land if you are looking at cash going into SE's pockets as the only justification for you to get someone elses plot?

Seems Katz, Hypie, and I are the only voices of reason here.

What entitles me (or really, players less fortunate than me) to your wife's house? Simple: she is no longer playing the game, and has not played the game in a very long time. She no longer supports the game financially. She no longer contributes to the ward community of the house she has purchased. She adds nothing to FFXIV while continuing to hog one of its rarest resources selfishly to herself.

Most people can easily afford a small house. However, that number falls dramatically when you factor in the going rate of a house owner releasing their property: typically 3 to 4 times the full value of the plot. Unlike the vast majority of the playerbase, I can feasibly get the money required for that in a relatively short amount of time. I, however, choose not to buy an overpriced "service" charge by leeches abusing a broken system. I would much rather those people get no money and be stuck with a house they don't use than give them the pleasure of profiting off their abuse of the broken system.

Reasons like this is why I think they haven't rushed into this. They will eventually have to do something about it, but what if your wife never comes back to the game? is it fair to them to keep paying for servers to support that? or to new players who can't get housing who will eventually pass people that never return in payments? its a very complicated situation and I'm sure they want to avoid handling it on a case by case basis cause that's tedious and expensive. They're likely to use a reimbersment system somehow where you get a percentage of the current asking price for that lot. They clearly have alot to work out before any eviction systems come into play, but they said from the beginning that if you're account goes inactive for too long, you'll loose the house there just isn't enough resources to provide for people who aren't playing.

That said, I hope your wife's surgery went well and she gets better soon.

"no longer playing the game" is a temporary state of existence.
She supported the game financially at every opportunity prior to being incapable of playing. Again, if money going into the pockets of SE is your measuring stick for worthiness of home ownership, then shes paid her dues for quite a while.
Our ward community is a ghost town of dead FC housing.
You are entitled to exactly NOTHING.

Housing has problems, are you are focusing on the wrong one.
1 - SE should add more wards, but doing so would make their CFO sad. Premium wards would make players happy and the CFO happy.
2 - Dead FC's should start being identified through some metric and addressed. It could be a lack of players to auto-pass leadership to, it could be a small seal tax.


Premium wards would allow people with no houses to get a house. It would allow people who already have a house in a dead ward to move into a ward thats not dead.
Cleaning up dead FC's would turn dead wards into active wards. Players moving from dead wards into premium wards would open land for non-premium housing.

Everyone wins, no one loses their house, SE's CFO is happy.

Don't get me wrong, I agree that they will eventually have to do something about it. But again, this game is almost 2 years into a planned 10 year run. It is very very early for them to be able to determine who is a lost customer and who is simply a customer waiting for enough reason to return. Now is certainly not the time to talk about punishing inactive subscriptions with a loss of their house. MMO's first expansion is usually when you'll see the highest number of returning customers, second and third expansions... not so sure. I think populations start to level out by the second and third expansion. Maybe at the games 5 year mark they should take a look at accounts with houses to determine a lost customer or not.

Also - shes doing alright. Just a major life adjustment. Not being able to bend your dominant wrist, and getting what I imagine is world destroying pain every time something does put pressure on a wrist that would normally bend, sucks pretty bad.

It would not take 5 years to determine a basic framework for what constitutes a player/account that has likely been permanently terminated by the user.

Also, your premium house idea is idiotic. It's the same thing as SE's plan for more retainers and inventory space: rather than fix the problem, just let those affected pay their way out of it.

Burning Crusade came out in 2007, steady customer growth. Wrath of the Lich King came out in 2008, steady customer growth. Cataclysm came out in 2010. Cataclysm being the third expansion. Customer numbers have been dropping ever since. I'm sure my 2 minutes of googling cannot be used as bullet proof evidence of all MMO customer retention data, however they seem to follow the trend, with WoW being the only other recent successful MMO to really get good numbers from.

First expansions are hyped. People who used to play and feel like they've run out of stuff to do come back for the first expansion. If its good, they do the same for the second. But by the third, a lot of people move on to other games or feel like they've done the grind enough.

Yes, it is the same thing. It's almost like its a function that works as they intended! User inventories take up space the same as houses do. If players want more space, they should pay more money. Amazing how that works out! You and I can go back and forth for quite a while on micro transactions I imagine. I am not a fan of them. But its what the gaming industry is doing now. Accept it, or stop playing todays new fangled video kerjiggers. If premium plots is a solution that makes SE and Madjames happy, then its a better solution than pissing off any returning player who is now homeless.

I dont know about any one else but even now that im leveling crafting I dont have an inventory issue. Sounds to me like some people just like hording junk they dont nees in which I aplore SE taking advantage of that by bleeding an extra 2usd per retainer per month out of them.

I am indeed guilty of hording a lot of junk I don't need. I've leveled everything except pld, so I have a lot of gear. I've collected and held on to all the gear I might someday want to glamour and because a while back I heard something about SE putting in a different armory system where you could store entire collections of gear and learn the history behind the pieces. So I saved pieces for that too, don't think thats ever going to be a thing though.

If and I think its a big if, Intaki did work in customer database retention and subscription services, I'll say its a good thing they didn't also work in customer service and PR because everything they say does indeed have a salty uncalled for sting. I meter software usage against a database of 40,000 users to determine if volume licensing is being sufficiently used. That doesn't mean I can determine the likeliness of a user wanting to use a license 3 months from now based on the fact that they haven't used it for the last 4 months. Maybe if they had included which gaming company they worked for and which MMO they parsed data for I would be more impressed. Otherwise, it sounded like they wanted to know what I base my "player base levels off around the 2nd or 3rd expansion" comment on and I think I addressed that pretty well.

Intaki did succeed in getting this so far off the topic of FAIR and PRACTICAL housing solutions though, so bravo to them for that. This thread is now pretty pointless.

Evictions wont happen. Think of something else.

Im really leaning towards ourr colaberative idea if premium housing Kataz.

It would have levels of risk to them but imo nothing unacceptable.

Make them alot more customizable inside and out and even a few extra perks like a heavy discount on construction items and other housing items from npcs (ballenced by items bought for said discount being untradable), and a few other superficial perks here and there.

That actually sounds like an everybody wins solution to me.

You realize the methods I stated go far beyond just MMOs, yes? Determining user trends in products that can track user stats is something almost all large, successful corporations use to inform marketing strategies.

Actually Intaki, The Primium Housing colaberative is primarily my idea and that's exactly what I was sugesting. I've played MMOs before with "Free" (read in game money) housing and "Primium" (read real money) housing and the primiums are always more extravigant, offer more item slots, and typically have some exclusive features that free housing dosent. After all, since I suppose you support the idea, would you pay real money for the exact se thing people can get for free?

Doing daily level GC supply missions, I keep all the mats on a page in the company chest, except the ones that can be bought from the FC house NPC or stacked (I also keep food and poitions stacks premade). About 50 spaces of inventory and I can round up mats and craft all 8 in under 10 minutes. Figuring out all the base mats I need and running around gathering them would take close to an hour.

But you are right with culinarian, there's no reason to keep every single ingredient for every recipe. Round up what you need to craft a pile of the item, craft several at once, 1 inventory spot taken up.

I only hoard what I might need. On top of that are also items such as materia, which can quickly fill up slots. Incidentally there's a lot of items that are dropped by monsters and as such cant be farmed easily/fast in larger amounts.

Theres also to consider the fact that you need some amount of space for creating order in your inventory, incidentally.

I tried that once, farm my own Blue Yarzon Legs. Then I quickly realised it would be a better idea to simply buy them from the mb when they are low and stack up on them. (took several minutes just to get one drop)



Retainers are all nice and dandy, if you have the time to for waiting when you need large amounts of an item.
Most basic mats are typically bought off the mb by large scale crafters, and as such youll need room in your inventory to store them.
(or for example from the beastribe vendors)

I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, it would provide some relief to current and future population stresses - but a few worrisome questions spring to mind.

What happens when you stop paying for your premium housing? Will you keep your lot? If you do, we'll be right back where we started. If you're evicted, and non-premium based housing doesn't evict you for non-payment, we've created a system where the premium, real money housing has a glaring inferiority to the normal lots. It would have to be way, way cooler in execution, appearance, convenience (and maybe even function) than normal housing to overcome such a handicap.

It also raises a certain ethical concern - not, like, "starving children in africa" ethical, or "mcdonalds wages ruining lives" ethical. Think "that-guy-on-tumblr-called-me-freaky" mild ethical irritation.
I'm trying to say it seems a tiny bit unfair to new players, having to pay extra for what was supposed to be part of the deal. This is especially true if the premium housing evicts tenants for non-payment, while the regular housing does not.

get rid of private homes and make them into larger ones for fc's, make private rooms bigger and with gardening avaliablity and separete permissions controlled by the person who bought the room

allow a minimum time before applications to a FC are automatically acepted this would allow ppl to join a dead fc and revive it see next point

automatically promote to a special rank (when leaders of a fc have been inactive for a certain period of time) that is able to carryon leading a fc without destroying what has previously been made ie can only add or move items in a fc house

all the ppl who currently own a house is given a refund of the amount they paid for the plot all items are avaliable from one of the npcs

And why should private home owners lose their homes just so FCs can have one? We worked hard and paid money for ours just like a FC would. I think you need to rethink your idea.

I Agree with Nyxs, this idea takes up far to many resources AND is completely unfair to every one involved both FCs AND Non-FCs since many FC members with their own homes would have them taken despite being in an FC. I go as far to say as this is a worse Idea than the current model since it fixes nothing, would cost insane amounts to execute, and punish everyone while rewarding nothing not even the effort involved.

Really they need to reevaluate the house size ratios and not just add carbon copies. Apply them on a sever by server basis and add in property taxes. Have them withdrawn automatically from the fc chest, once an inactive fc's coffers are empty, give them 30 days to come up with the gil or loose it. If they're caught buying gil to pay it they loose it no matter what.

It's more deserving to those who are actually continuously playing the game because one, they are benefiting the server costs with their money more so than someone who hasn't logged in/given SE any money for 6 months, and two, it's a server based content that is locked and isn't your personal belongings on the level that your inventory is.

Housing isn't like inventory in which everyone has one, housing is limited and really selective on who has the money first before someone else does and pulls the trigger on this limited selective content. If someone doesn't login for 6 months, or even permanently quits, they are essentially holding this specific server's content for ransom and that content could be locked away permanently if they never come back.

It's much more logical to appease the people who continuously play than those that don't. With a system that'll relinquish land within a certain time frame of inactivity, it raises the chance people will actually utilize this content and more people have a chance to enjoy it without there being any actual flaw.
