You really need to unplug and get out more Nibelunc, you sound like an old fart.
How about it gets done like in many first person shooters, where your movement speed is slowed while jumping?
At the very least make sure each jump requires a key press, so we don't get people going AFK and leaving a can of Mt. Dew on their space bar so they jump forever.
Let's do running fatigue, too. I mean, people tend to start having heart attacks around the marathon finishing point, right? Hell, it's not like you can just walk all day without stopping, either. Every few in-game hours, we should have to stop and take care of our character's feet. Maybe when we do that, we can answer the call of nature and/or eat. Y'know, since reality is not bad. . .
Silent hill had a thing where you cant run for too long or you get warn out, was kinda annoying (I know you were being sarcastic but the feature is actually in a game!)
No to fatigue, that is the dumbest idea I have ever heard.
You guys shouldn't worry that much.
WOW is the only MMO where people abuse of the jump feature.
I played Aion and Rift and that would never happen.
People usually used it during PvP and to climb a small mountain or something.
FFXIV has a community mature enough to use the jump feature correctly.
No, I want Final Fantasy :)
Innovation = Useless dumb looking hopping..
I was fine with the game, you will never be. So who's happier and didn't expect too much?
I'm really looking forward to the most of the changes and content, but why should they change the whole game style oO jumping does not fit. It even doesn't if they redesign all areas. But it seems like everybody want that jump sh1t, so I don't want to stay a rock in this thread.
I have one.. Of course I like some of the new games, but I'm not gonna play them again - nothing special.Quote:
you don't have a PS2 ???
I seriously doubt the jumping in this game will look anything like WoW's. WoW has absolutely no sense of proper scale. The size of characters when compared to...well, anything...is completely unrealistic. I highly doubt we will have a jump where the characters jump more than their own height (with the exception of maybe Lalafell).
If they give a sense of scale and weight to the characters when they jump, it won't look so unrealistic. In fact, if they make the start up and landing animations a little bit longer, it won't look like bunny hopping as it will have a natural delay.
You should really stop assuming things about people. SE is changing the game because they need it to be financially viable. It takes money to maintain an mmo. The game you enjoy and didn't assume too much on will not be a game for long if it doesn't stay afloat come PS3 launch.
Care to elaborate? There's no need to spam the jump button relentlessly, so I don't see how adding jump fatigue could be anything but a good idea unless your idea of a good time is griefing other players.
(EDIT: To be honest, I haven't felt the need to jump at all in this game since the environment pathing updates.)
I would like the same thing, but only so that we can get more stylized jumps. It would be nice if in certain areas, like cliff walls, or rugged terrain there would be these jump nodes that would allow you to jump at greater heights and distances to traverse the area.
We could have Miq'otes doing backflips, Lalafels doing somersaults, and Rogedyns doing heavy leaps. It would add some real style to the game.
But I don't think it has to be exclusive to this. After all this style requires the developers to program quests, and dungeons, and areas in the world to support this.
How man times have you came upon a cliff and said if only I could jump this! Sure the loosened collision detection on terrain. But we just slide up the side, nothing cool like jumping!
So it would take awhile to implement this correctly. So allowing you to jump anywhere in the game is a simpler solution.
Bunny hopping is fun every once in awhile, but there doesn't need to be arbitrary rules just to prevent it. How is somebody jumping around really truely affecting you?
Sure when they release this your worse nightmares will come true for the first 3-4 months. lol once the WOW (unintentional pun, really it was!) factor wears off. Ppl won't do it so much.
I'd also like to see climbing like in EQ2. but thats another thread ;)
so why are we complaining about jump again? it only adds something positive to the gem, nothing negative about it. "wat bonny jomp", come on now, i dont see you guys complaining about spamming emotions. you are just being ridickulous and childish. go back to bed already.
"jump fatigue", just look at how dumb it sounds. how about "laugh fatigue", too much laughing will tire your lunges and you are unable to run.
this is preposterous.
Also in WoW there are abilities like Warrior Charge and Mages missle attacks that can be dodged by jumping. The more you jump the less you are on the ground susceptible to these attacks. As far as I know there isn't any attacks in XIV that would be affected by jump. Mainly because jump is not implemented yet lol. Doh! >.<
PvP it has the advantage in WoW of confusing your target and making it difficult to target them for a "Mouse Targeter". This doesn't happen in XIV because we mostly tab target and there isn't any PvP..... yet!
In WoW in PvP you can also run towards a mage jump over them. It's the quickest way to geto out of their "Field of View". This would work in XIV because if a target is not in front of you you can't cast a spell or target it! So if we had PvP this would be advantageous in XIV. Could be used against Mobs as well.
Personally I would prefer a jump attack that would just position me behind a mob. It would just look better than doing a normal jump. Because such a jump, depending on the mob size would need to be quite high to get over! So a normal jump you would just pass through the mob. This just looks silly.
So, point of this is. If the game supports advantages to combat for jumping, ppl are going to abuse it and use it. But if it doesn't make a difference, it likely won't be used in battle unless it's incorporated in skills. Which I think is the best way to implement jumping for battle.
Regular adventuring and traversing the terrain, though jumping anytime would be nice. Could make some interesting videos with XIV's head and eye tracking combined with jumping! :D Yayz!
Good point Ark_Mage2, new blood needs to be added to this game.
What these restrictive, elite player type ppl don't realize is. By restricting the game to the point where ppl are not interested in it restricts FFXIV to appeal to only a niche group of ppl.
We cannot hope for FFXIV to grow in population and appeal to more players if features are not added that will draw in new players. That either potentially left because of lack of features or never joined because of lack of features.
Arguing about every "new" feature that comes along is only further putting FFXIV into an early grave. IF WE DONT GET MORE PLAYERS to come to FFXIV. Then you might as well stop playing now because XIV has only 6 months or less to live.
Open your mind and learn new things. It is what XIV needs to survive. And if you enjoy the game now to stick with it. You should be glad the Developers realize this and are making attempts to make the game more popular and fun to play.
I swear to God, if there is a "jumping fatigue" I am still going to jump around like a madman around towns to show you people that a few seconds in between jumps will still annoy you. So hold onto your hats, 'cause I'm gonna blow your mind. You'd need something that's at least a minute in between jumps to alleviate your immersion issues.
But on a side note: If the delay is longer than a minute, it's a very annoying restriction on the game's level designer. No two "required" jumps in an instance or whatever can be within a minute of each other. Sitting around doing nothing next to a ledge, waiting for a timer to finish up is bad design.
here's to hoping for a '/jump off' option...
So then people will just teleport up ledges? That's not immersion breaking at all. It's weird enough when the game tries to interpret where a player is going and shoots them up a ledge.
And let me be clear. I didn't want jumping. If it was my choice, I'd say just get rid of the collision going down ledges, and that's fine with me. However, I am always against pointless restrictions that sound good on paper, but don't actually work or will only get in the way later on in the game's life.
well they've already said jump is not going to be used to traverse areas of the map, so you won't be jumping up ledges anyhow.
I'm trying to find the source, bear with me...

So there you have, you asked for it; jumping ala WoW, now you all got it. Congratulations.Quote:
Yoshida: All I can say is that we are not emphasising jumping with the jump key as a means to cover vast distances on the map or an element that must be used during battle strategies... Maybe it's easiest to say it will just be like the jump you generally see in MMO's.Quote:
Jump. We've pretty much confirmed it is coming. What further details can we wrestle out of you about it?
LOL just to keep the feeling of the game.. I'm okay with jump, if they don't make it the japanese physic way. I'm not going to like it but maybe I will stay until rideable unicorns are implemented.
That's not correct. You people have no patience and expected way to much from a starting MMORPG. Ok, it was released too early. Just btw: I started playing games in 1997 and loved the games from 1987 as well. Don't know how you all like those casual games without a core.Quote:
Fine. Get out. Go stick to your late 80's and early 90's games. It's your kind that helped turn FFXIV into what it is now -- the butt of every joke in gaming and the posterchild for how not to make a game.
You mean people hanging around, walking between the sections of the cities, probably running to the mailbox to pick up something won from the auction house, sitting in the in-game pubs, maybe just standing cool on their rare or cool-looking mounts, or maybe even flying away on their flying mounts? Why would you not want any of that?
Also, please stop the anti-jump nonsense. You sound like those people who get annoyed at the sound of raindrops when it rains.
Um... I don't get "not jumping up ledges" from that exert.
"Not emphasizing as a means to cover vast distances" just says to me that there won't be much jumping over pits. But jumping up ledges is different. Either way. Not "emphasizing" doesn't mean it will never be used in those manors.
By saying that jump won't be used to cover "vast distances" on the map, he's most likely referring to MMOs like Aion, where you can jump and glide to zoom around the map. Considering that they're implementing jump as well as redesigning the map, I think it's reasonable to expect at least some jumping from ledge to ledge in the game. Whether or not you'll HAVE to do it to get to certain areas is a different thing. I hope so, though. Sounds like fun.
We'll see in a few days I suppose. I'm not exactly filled with confidence regarding the change though.
Why do people care so much about this?...its just Jumping...
Now gimme the ability to swim dammit!
Here's a couple ideas for real ways that'll discourage a fair number of people from jump spamming without actually gimping a mechanic.
1) Only allow the player to jump if they are currently moving. Meaning, you can't jump while standing still. The theory behind this is that if a player is bored or lazy, hitting a single button over and over doesn't take much effort, so they will do it. However, adding the requirement of moving to be able to spam this button over and over, can be enough to persuade players that it's not worth it. Also the added fact that you will need to navigate yourself, unless you want to just jump into walls all day. It's a weird observation but I don't mind doing something dumb that requires only a single hand. But two hands? I might as well actually be doing something. Plus, mechanically, there's no point to jump without moving unless we're jumping onto ferris wheels.
2) After hitting the ground after a jump, your momentum is slightly decreased for a second. If you jump again within that second before you pick up momentum again, you'll lose even more momentum. This keep players from bunny hopping to locations, because it will slow them down considerably. During my time playing WoW, the most prominent time I saw bunny hopping was when a player was traversing from point A to point B. Players hate to travel at a slower pace than what they could be achieving. For instance: I use to played a lot of Counter Strike. When running from starting zones, I'd always bunny hop to entertain myself until I got to where I wanted to be. In patch 1.6, I think, they implemented a jump system just like the one I described. That's all it took to keep me from bunny hopping across distances (Not enough to keep me from bunny-hop shooting, though).
Would these eliminate bunny hopping altogether? No. The only way to do that is to not allow jumping. Will these reduce the amount of bunny hopping more than a slight cooldown or stamina meter? I'd like to make a bet and say yes, they would.
