Wait, sacrificing your own health to heal other players? I like it.

The idea is nice, but the implication of requiring a target to attack, in melee, to keep up healing on other players? i doubt if that would happen as a dedicated healer. Perhaps this would be purposeful as a tank, and only used on the DRK himself. I can only see it as a cooldown used during high damage phases to help out. Healing other players via attacking, especially via melee? incredibly awkward without another way to heal, when melee is unaccessible. Not for a DRK feel, I don't think. sorry. Maybe you are thinking of a blood mage...
If this was brought up about the DRK I apologize. I'm a few mins from leaving for work and I haven't read the entire thread.
Like some I want to see the drk because I played one back in 11. An Elvaan drk popping soul eater+guillotine /kefka laugh
One Idea I had that would be a drastic change for drk slightly. I'm a smn main and I like the idea that, unlike others, my class can change what is our role in a party. I can be a dps or a healer if I wanted.
"What if" we make drk a job for thm. Hear me out. You would have a dps that can choose to be a ranged caster or a bad ass melee. As for the lore the two almost coincide. I still don't know how we would make all the thm abilitys mix with a melee. Unlike arcanist/sch/smn it would literally be a different set of abilitys but drks were melees with slight magic in 11. Never used nuke spells back then but I did drain stats+tp and abused stun :P
One thing I also don't get about this thread as a whole is that hardly anybody seems to be taking a Dark Knight with a shield seriously.
Call us FFIV fanboys and girls if you will, but can it really be coincidence that the Paladin AF Armor has shades of Cecil in it and the Dragoon AF Armor is so Kain that it hurts? I seriously think that there's a deliberate callback to FFIV with these two jobs in particular, and that there may be a high chance that Gladiator will be used to host Dark Knight solely because of the FFIV-esque duality between Paladin and Dark Knight. Since Cecil wielded a sword and a shield in both of these jobs, I doubt that a Dark Knight that branches from Gladiator would change the primary weapon of the class.
Besides, a class/job is defined by their primary weapon! How can we even know if it's possible for the Armoury System to support a class and one of its jobs having a different primary weapon? The only change that seems possible from what we know right now is to change the shield and just the shield to something else. Additionally, there can also easily be Gladiator's Primary Weapons that can only be equipped by a Dark Knight. The Relics already do this sort of restricting.
I don't think it's that hard to work around with it. They can simply design it to the way that when you equip a weapon that can be used for both drk and pld, there will be another option you can choose upon equiping it, say "You are about to equip this weapon, choose your Job/Class: drk, pld, gla" and if it's a hot key that you want to make for job change, they can simply make it to bypass that option for the corresponding job hot key.
This isn't what I mean at all. For example, SMN/SCH have plenty of books that can be freely equipped by both of them regardless of their slant toward healing or dps'ing. What I mean is this scenario:
GLD -> PLD uses a one handed sword as its primary weapon. DRK could do the same, and they would have set of swords fitted to their particular role while also being able to equip some of a PLD's swords.
However, what if they just completely change DRK's weapon? Instead of a one handed sword, they run around with a two handed Greatsword as their primary weapon? Can the Armory system be worked with such that a DRK can do this, yet still be recognized as a Job branching from GLD?
well, they just need to make up some story that fits behind all that. Game mechanic-wise, it's not hard to implement. All those relic weapons already are job specific only if you haven't noticed them.
In my experience, these things tend to sort themselves out.
Im waiting for Summoner job.
Relics auto equip job crystals so yeah the work around is easy.
I'd really like to see DRK be a tank class.
The only way I would be ok with it being a dps class is if it was a sword/shield dps form for GLD. (And yes, I think sword/shield would be an interesting setup for a melee dps class.)
There just arent enough classes that are good candidates for tank. There really needs to be a balance between the number of tank/dps/healer classes, so more tanks really should be added as other classes are.
Samurai and Dark Knight fit into the tank role best, imo.
Either way, Dark Knight is a KNIGHT, and should use a sword & shield like Leon, Cecil, Gafgarion, etc. Its the iconic FF Dark Knight.
Stop wishing for DRK to b a tank. It's a DPS. It's not ff11 style. There r better candidate in ff lOre for a tank job.
“Vikings have the ability to lure enemies into attacking them instead of other members of the party, but it's gonna hurt!”
—In-game description
The Viking (バイキング, Baikingu ?) is a Job class in Final Fantasy III. It is gained from the Water Crystal. Vikings swing giant hammers and axes with ease. Their only drawback is that they develop slower than other melee Jobs. Vikings are mainly used as a "tank" for their Provoke ability and access to the strongest armor. Ther u have it.
The Dark Knight class, when brought into Final Fantasy 14, will depend on which base class they will use to create the soul crystal for this job. Will it be Gladiator? Opposite the paladin which will make a Dark Knight a sword and shield type (like Cecil) AND tank since the Gladiator abilites produce enmity, OR base it off Lancer and make it a scythe class (like final fantasy 11) and since Lancer's don't get any jump abilites it could work, and the animation of using the lance could also work with a Scythe. OR will they base it off Marauder, which again makes it a tank? OR lastly, create a new base class?
Only time will tell.
Hate to say it.. but i doubt there will be a DRK class. Not in the forseeable future anyway. If they do it will most likely be a tank. Being there adding in ninja(Tank), thief(?)(dps) in the Expantion, and the duel pistol(dps) class in 2.2.
The next class they add will probably be a healer, as there already adding in dps and tank classes in the future. I would personally like ninja to be dps, but in FFXI it was a tank class. So.. i'd assume it'll be a tank in ffxiv as well. An evasion/blinding/parry tank.
I would put my money on Blue mage, a status inflicting healer class. Debuffs and buffs to many mobs at once, and full party buffs.
yeah... NIN gonna be dps cuz it was never tank to begin with. nice try
Leon, the first DRK, primarially used spears and axes. Just look at his proficiencies and most powerful weapon...
p.s.
My main problem with the shield idea is that it provides too much to defense in this game, unlike other FF games. Here with this one, I can see it possibly coming from a gladiator but changing the role entirely to DPS as every incarnation has intended the class to be a DPS role, despite unintended hick-ups, loopholes, or game unique customizations. I am sure they never intended NIN, WHM, or BLM to be tanks and I don't see that here. If they chose a previously tank class for a DPS role, I see a stance reducing its defenses and still wearing heavy armor (It'll just would be like dragoon armor really in effect).
If you can't take my opinion, read the wiki's description:

Drk job would would give access to soul eater, an enhanced blood for blood, and a few more DRK abilities, also with the DrK crystal they now equip scythes in main slot and a Great sword in the shiled slot or visa versa. The Drk abilities would determine which weapon was used. relics can be done like they do pld sword and shield.
I'll play drk if I can port my apoc over from 11 lol
You can count me in ;)
I want my Dark Knight to use 2h Greatsword and to have the iconic Darkness/Sacrifice/Souleater skill. If they put the Job Quest starting point in Ishgard or Black Shroud and give them a lore full of dark and angst I think I'd die happy!
Yoshi thrown the idea of making DRK out of GLD but he said that the secondary job of the class we already have will be a different role, like ACN to SMN and SCH, too. I don't know what use would gain a DD from the tank/enmity+ skills the GLD has and the MRD, with all those HP absorbing skill, would seems a better starting role. That said, Egis turn into Fairies so everything is possibile.
The only material I know that can be connected to the DRK is this Amano's artwork http://static4.wikia.nocookie.net/__..._Cover_Art.jpg
A full black warrior with a black sword and shield, which clearly winks to the GLD. It's only an old artwork and it doesn't completely obliterate my dream of a bad giant salvationless sword bringer of destruction and desperation--LOL- as there are other classes that can change from 1H to 2H weapons.
I wouldn't mind a new starting class like Swordman or Fencer based on 2H Sword leading to DRK and SAM or RDM. About its role I'm not sure as I think both tanking and DPS can be interesting.
Oh, only time will tell..
Why does a "knight" = a shield? "Knights" utilized a large variety of both 1 handed and two handed weapons. The armory system alone would not make sense to make a DRK out of a GLD. Unless dark becomes a tank class, it would make no sense in the entire FF franchise to see a DRK wielding a shield. The moment a "Dark knight" is shield bashing to do dps from behind a target, the class will be stupid. A 1 handed sword, sure. A shield used for bashing or just held cosmetically.. as a drk? I'm sorry that's about as shitty a comparison to drk as xenosaga is to xenogears. dual wielding would be neat, but the odds of SE redesigning the offhand slot to be taken into account for DMG by equipping a stone alone is too suspect. SE always takes the easy way out with things. DRK will piggy back off of polearms or axes so that drk can get blue weapons like extreme mode drops and still equip them or gear from current dungeons while lvling to 50r. LNC, DRG, DRK or MRD, War, Drk just wait for it!
AN entirely new starting job makes more sense in terms of dps utility, opposed to going to GLD. MRD and LNC skills are the closest to the evil abilities of a DRK, alongside some sort of magic caster... gladiator gets mp!!!, people say, so does a THM...It makes a LOT more sense to make THM a secondary or tertiary class for the DRK job. But knowing SE, we will all be wrong... DRK will be Tri-wielding ball and chains or maces/clubs: 1 in each hand and then 1 in the mouth. Lastly, they will import a character model of the judges from the franchise and call it a day Or just change the pants and boots from the WAR AF and tweak the helmet a little.
@above I think for the DW part of it, SE will do it like how monks now with fist weapon on both hand. It'll b just a mirror or copy from ur main hand.
Thinking on it, most likely Dark Knight will be like Dragoon, in that it'll be DPS that can wear Heavy Armor. Odds are it will start in the Marauder or Thaumaturge lines, and require most likely both classes. Combining Thaumaturge's knowledge of destructive magic with the Marauder's knowledge of reckless battle and tanking, it shall fit the stereotypical Dark Knight well...a master of giving out damage in return for their own power. It may also be a triple-class, one that requires Arcanist as well. Sky's the limit on what classes they can use for it. It could even be an offshoot of Lancer for all we know.
竜騎士
Dragon Riding Samurai
Fun fact: All classes in FF end with 士 (meaning samurai).
Side note: Classes, not jobs

This the best I've got
士 - military man, suffix for profession
I was simply pointing out it isn't called, "Dragon Knight". At least, not in this game it isn't.
Interesting. A break down of the characters had me in the wrong spot. Dragon-Calvary(riding)-profession(samurai/warrior counter) for Dragoon. Which is weird considering Paladin is just Knight (ナイト).
I would hope a dark knight would have a scythe. would be so cool
As long as I have been playing Dragoon in FFXI and FFXIV, any time I searched for the japanese name for dragoon, Dragon Knight always came up. Even the wikia page states it:
From what I found through search, 騎士(Kishi) = Knight, and the character that comes before it is 竜(Ryū) meaning Dragon.Quote:
The Dragoon (竜騎士, Ryūkishi, lit. "Dragon Knight"), also localized as Dragon Knight or Lancer, is a recurring Job in the Final Fantasy series. First appearing in Final Fantasy II, they have become one of the most famous and iconic job classes of the series.
I like to see DPS classes like this, two as a nod to FFXI. These use existing abilities and armaments in the game.
1. Hoplite class - Tank. Essentially a tank with a spear and a shield. Uses weapons from Lancer.
2. Samurai class - DPS. The idea is similar to a Dragoon, where the arts are focused in concentrating energy to a single point, but here a blade instead of a lance. Uses weapons from Gladiator but not shield.
3. Ninja class - DPS. Essentially combines a Pugilist with a Tharmautage/Black Mage.
give me a great sword class, with DD job DRK, and tank job Rune Fencer
and we can all be friends :) lol
Scythe can even come back as a different class, go for it, but I'd love a
large sword dark knight
Drk was my main class in FFxi and can't wait to for it to be implemented but I'll have to be the best alternative atm Dragoon which I love btw
My main theory is that all classes will have a dps component but classes that are primarily dps classes will have more of support dps jobs or even others roles like bard which are support
here's a few theories I have on how things might evolve class and job wise
DRK = MDR ~ Lnc /Thm
Red Mage = Gld ~ Thm/Cjn (support Melee dps , just like how bard is support Range) uses Weapon enfeebling and Refresh
Geomancer = CJN ~ Arc/Thm ( DPS Gets Earthquake , Tornado )
since classes aren't heavily based off of FF lore I think they'll add an assassin/rogue class that will utilize knives and dagger
Thief = Assass ~ Pug/Lnc ( Uses 1 dagger )
Ninja = Assasin ~ Gld/ Mrd ( uses secondary 2 daggers ) ( Tank ? )
Ranger = Archer ~ Assass/Lnc ( Pure Dps )
BeastMaster = Lnc ~ Arcanist/? get your own creature pets
will those are some of my theories
Is anyone else here picking up on the new years riddle? It is making me think possibly the DRK job will be released.

"Beckoning shadows deeper still."
"Slender Dances with shades"
DRK isn't going to be a class then. Theres very little room for more DPS in this game with the other possible new jobs.
