After reading the japanese forums and recent dev posts, I think they are purging RMT, botters, cheaters and related things to them atm and will post their results soon. At least on Ultros there was just 1 teleport bot left in Thanalan. The bulk of lvl 1 miner bots were trying to "blend in" and, using terrible pathfinding, look for nodes "manually".
So my wild guess would be that SE was cutting the RMT gil from the economy and some people got so much of that gil that if removed, they would go minus gil, hence the /100 that happened.

If everyone in RL had a chance of their money to be taken away by their bank at the end of the month, noone would use it. They hide it in their mattress and buy a gun. Now everyone is scared, noone wants to spend money, and the market flow is just crap. -

You are bound by the ToS and the EULA when you signed on to play the game. You own absolutely nothing, not the characters, not the items and certainly not the gil that you earned in game. If you find that you disagree with SE and can no longer tolerate there constant mishandling of the game and content, you are at liberty to walk away.
What does SE owe you? what do you owe SE? The answer is nothing. It is logical to think that they will probably never get a handle of how RMT operate in the game, but you know this...and your still here... -

Odd.. I read an article on another site about this, and most people support what SE has done. In fact, the only loud voice against it, is one of the people posting here as well.
That again brings up the issue of magnitude. The magnitude of "legitimate" players who lost gil is no where near the number people constantly writing fear-mongering posts would have you believe.
It's pretty damn easy to sit at a keyboard, proclaim innocence and knowledge of some large unknown number of people effected. Heck, if I were in the RMT business, I would do whatever I could to make SE look like the bad guy so I could keep making real world $$$ off of an in-game virtual currency. -

I am replying to this thread not because of the fact that it is entirely irresponsible for a company such as SE to punish innocent players with account suspensions and gold removal (if SE can back up that every suspended player DIRECTLY AND INTENTIONALLY interacted with RMT by buying/selling gold than yes they do deserve it). The fact of the matter is SE made a terrible PR blunder with this and they are going to alienate A VAST MAJORITY OF THEIR PLAYER BASE BECAUSE MANY PEOPLE NOW WILL NOT PLAY THE GAME TO CRAFT FOR FEAR OF THEIR MONEY/ACCOUNT BEING BANNED FOR SOMETHING THAT IS ENTIRELY BEYOND THEIR CONTROL.
What I find worse however is the attitude of the community, I can't be bothered to go back, and quote people, because honestly the list of idiots from this and other threads is entirely too long to keep track of so instead I will settle for addressing some blunt points:
1) "By pricing an item for 1m on a new server for 1m+ you deserved your punishment because you had to know that there was no legitimate buyer."

Lets look at something, say...HQ rose gold crafts several of them require 18 Peacock ore, which as of last week on Leviathan was 40k/piece meaning you would be spending over 720k nearly a month into the expansion just to purchase the ore. Just because you are so poor that any sum over 200k is a vast and unobtainable amount doesn't mean that many crafters didn't invest millions, or tens of millions into the heavy darksteel, vanya, rose gold, or gryphonskin items which they were selling.
2) "You deserve it for pricing items beyond the means of others"

If the item is priced out of the means of legitimate players then odds are it wouldn't sell very frequently, the fact of the matter is people bought an Alchemist's chest for 70k because they could afford to, they leveled alchemy and were making money crafting prerelic weapons I personally have spent upwards of 500k on crafting gear, materia, etc all of which I earned from my goldsmithing, weaving, and carpentry.
3) "The only millionaires bought their money The game's only been out a month! This cannot be legit!"

Wrong, WRONG, WRONG, from day 1 there were dozens, if not hundreds of legitimate moneymaking methods players could use, the fact of the matter is the only people who are starved for gil are the ones who are too stupid to look up the price of basic mats like fleece on the AH, or the ones who know what's profitable but are simply too lazy to actually farm them. In essence everyone in this came who is poor is poor by choice there's no divine mandate that you must be poor you have no one to blame but yourselves stop lashing out at crafters.

SE's approach was wrong, period. Lets apply this to something far more people can understand, a very small # of players have abused glitches/etc to get gear, (or straight up afked in CM to farm their darklight) SE's solution? Remove ALL darklight from players, everyone who has at least 1 piece of darklight gets a 3 day suspension, their darklight removed and are compensated 300 allagan tomes of philosophy. Ask yourself this, would you continue playing the game after all of your work is destroyed like that when you did nothing wrong?

I personally feel like much of the community is behaving absolutely deplorably here, far worse in fact than I've seen in other MMOs, instead of reacting with sympathy towards other players who are victims in all this, people are being petty and mean-spirited seeking to attack crafters for the sole crime of being rich. To all of the legitimate crafters who were hurt by this, I'm sorry SE shouldn't have handled things so poorly and we can only hope they will return all of your money sometime within the next few weeks. -

3. Square Enix does not have the time or manpower to enter the thread and prove he is guilty.
4. Player says "Square Enix won't bother proving I did anything."
5. People whom are gullible believe Square Enix is evil.
These people got banned because they broke the rules. Honest people have nothing to worry about and should continue playing the game.
It's sad that SE cant get rid of these obvious threads because if they did, people would assume they contained the truth. -

I do sort of feel bad for the special few that may have been punished through no fault of their own... But I have to say, there really is no black mark on the game. In fact life is better than ever for us regular players.
Prices seem to be stabilizing on the market. Our gil is now worth more. The prices of high ticket items are slowly dropping to more reasonable levels. There aren't nearly as many farmers as there used to be. And funny thing is, there is absolutely no talk about this happening in game or in the media. People are going about their daily business same as they ever did, and there are just as many of them as there used to be if not more. -
