Please change the requirements to become mentor

They could make mentor roulette a lot more appealing if they didn't let it give you ex trials with undergeared people that have no real hope of beating the enrage. So long as that's a thing you can get, tanks and healers have lots of other options for their play time.

I had that many comms long before I had the other requirements met. If you're a tank/healer main, you get comms pretty quickly by simply doing your job and saying hello. It's not a reliable indication of much.

Fundamentally, there's no requirement to actually mentor to get mentor status, because it's automated. That's the root of the issue. You get lots of people who get it by meeting the requirements but have no interest in mentoring, so they use NN as a private chat channel and use mentor roulette to get rewards, and that's it.

There shouldn't be a particular reward for mentoring. You want people who do it because they like helping sprouts, not because it'll get them a shiny thing.

What the community expects of mentors is only that, community expectations. There are no rules or guidelines set by SE. For now, all the crown really means is a person who has completed x amount of content.

FWIW, I agree that basically everyone who wears that crown is hands down going to be the worst in your group. Whether it be seriously low dps, attitude or lack of raid awareness. Unfortunately, aside from attitude, its not really a thing there's systems in place to monitor.

And therein lies the crux of the matter and the disparity between what people expect when they hear the word 'mentor' and what SE actually uses the system for - people hear 'mentor' and expect someone 1. who knows what they're doing, 2. who is both willing and able to explain things to the rest of the party. But ultimately the reason Mentor roulette is the way it is, without harsher penalties and with a glorified double mount at the end of frigging 2k runs of it, is because it's there for fill queues. And nothing anyone says will change the fact that's ultimately what the system in its entirety is there for. People have been playing the game for long before the mentor system, and have actually mentored before it, too, and they'll keep doing so even if the mentor system ended tomorrow. Mentors are just queue fodder.

Commendations is a bad measure anyway.

I think a better requirement would be having completing every duty level synced.

Part of the problem with the system is someone can run in unsync titan ex and then it's ticked off the list and that person is apparently qualified to mentor people through the fight if it comes up in mentor roulette.

Something like that would soon get rid of terrible mentors I think

That's flawed logic right there because it implies some people who have cleared Titan ex synced, maybe even on min ilvl, are somehow qualified to do the same thing. What if they're just bad at explaining? What if they cleared it but three years ago? Short of having SE test people for a frigging teacher's license, there's no real way to measure what a 'mentor' is - but that's fine, because as I like to say, we're here for queue fodder anyway. Anything outside of trials can just be met with silence or 'sorry, I don't know' and oddly enough, I don't see anyone complaining about mentors who say that in the Novice Network or calls to have their crowns stripped.

Changing the requirements for becoming a mentor won't really mean much. There will always be some mentors who are utterly toxic yet still help out people. SE wants more people to become mentors so they can fill the mentor roulette to help new/returning players. And unless the Jap community complains about it, SE won't do a thing about the system since as most of us know by now, SE couldn't give 2 s**ts about how the NA/EU community feels about most things. Overhaul or not, toxic mentors will continue to exist.

Ok so i was thinking also something that could be viable to implement as possibly a better way to judge it.
How about lets call this a behavior system.So lets say you have to be over a certain % score in this and if you drop below it you lose your mentor status.
These things would include how often the player casts vote abandons and leaves or dc's instances.
Also have idle time as a factor.Although for this part to work it would have to detect those idle only when a battle is going on.

I guess I should had made it more clear but it was late.

I was trying to state that you still have to go through those things, whether it be dungeons, 3 jobs to 60 and commendations, or going the crafting/gathering route. Let's not take everything so literal.

Which then begs the question:
Why is it locked behind mentor status? Wouldn't it be far better to make it open to everyone if that's the purpose?

The more people have access to it, the more people potentially queue for it and thus, the better it fulills the filler function. Locking it behind 1k dungeons and whatnot is counterproductive. In fact, you should only be able to queue as AiN for it, because AiN is what's currently needed and the point is to fill what's needed. Or not?

I dunno. If the purpose really is to fill queues... it's not set up very well for its purpose.
