Why do so many people FAIL at dps.

Yes, and no.
There's the emnity table which you can observe during longer fights. If you see certain DPS being far higher on generating said emnity and start creeping up on the tank, then I assume their output is pretty good in comparison to someone who is even under the healer regarding generation (DPS-healers aside).

However that can be only applied to situations where the gear level is similar and it is a duty which isn't downscaled/synced.

The problem ultimately stems from a combination of these two points. A very large number of players in this game are bad because they have no idea how bad they actually are and the game itself never pushes them to improve.

This problem would go away if we had more challenging content in regular dungeons and such. As long as the game is made as easy as possible to cater to these players they will never get better.

there has been some DPS checks in 4 mans too , The wall in amdapor was the 1 one (later on SE removed the adds) , some bosses have mechanics that force u to kill the boss faster or u will wipe if u dont meet the min dps req.

That doesnt change the fact that yeah u can carry a bad dps around with little to no issues...4 man challenging content was nerfed , and probably will never make a comeback. It doesnt help that 4 mans are created usually 20 ilvls lower that whatever every1 is wearing....

Amdapor keep in 2.0 (the wall) , Pharos Sirius .... even 8 man got nerfed from time to time (Steps of faith)

DF and challenging content is a no-no for SE.

The game has no realistic or reliable way to get real time live combat feedback, many players who are doing horrible DPS either don't know that they are or don't care because nobody else can legitimately tell.

Really, its not hard to look up youtube guides or look up guides on how to play a class effectively.



I know some people that play on keyboard and are terrible at it but the most come from controller players due to not enough buttons or controls scheme. Kinda like I can't play Mass effect on Keyboard/mouse.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. First off, playing effectively is not maxing DPS. Playing effectively doesn't mean you're pulling top dps on all classes, if you are show me your ranks on fflogs in savage. Secondly, there are at minimum 32 buttons at your (quick and easy) disposal on a gamepad so that's a craps excuse

Lack of in game feedback is the main reason.

OP claims they can max DPS on any job.

Go check their FFlog on Thordan EX as Monk, and compare it to the top Monk on their server (Balmung).
686 vs 1265?
You certainly are maxing out your DPS alright.

Even factoring in gear, that would not account due a 500+ DPS difference.

The same reason BRD and BLM can rip hate from tanks and such. Some people just never learned the finer details. or may be distracted, could be lagging, stoned/drunk...the list can go on. It is the gamble you take with random match-ups in the DF/PF.

Through Dungeon/Duty cleartimes, maybe?
You usually get a feeling when the clearing of the trash takes longer than usual.

I don't particularly like WM since I've been leveling up bard, but it's not terribly bad. About the only benefit outside of the slight damage increase is the reduced TP expenditure. You can burn through TP so fast on bard, so it's nice to have a bit of natural recovery while waiting on the cast times. It does still feel like a cheap gimmick, I don't really understand why they felt the need to make physical ranged = casting ranged, but that's the hand we are dealt I guess.
