I somehow dont really believe that LB3 has the same functions ingame than it does in the story. Papalymo kinda activated some kind of LB with Yda and they were only two people. Alisae might have taken more time to charge hers but we were also not a full party. And it was already said the description only mentions that you need some other people that you draw from and we had some people with us. (And instead of having to rezz a whole party this was only one person with one wound)
In regards to the Limit Breaks... it's a gameplay mechanic. Theoretically we should be able to use one on our own, but that sort of thing would just make headaches. Healer and tank Limits aren't particularly useful in solo play, and you'd have to go around fighting and killing things before every dungeon just in case you need it. There's nothing you should need a Limit for in open-world solo play, and no fight should be unwinnable without a Limit. (The only one that comes to mind where it's absolutely necessary is Alexander Prime, and that will probably disappear once people reach higher gear levels. A couple other fights (Ifrit HM, Ultima HM, and the Chrysalis) come to mind, but they are manageable without it.)
They've been doing that since the introduction of the Au Ra, kinda. Check out the Raen naming conventions; it's a long explanation on what should be a lore-friendly name with details on archaic (14th - 16th century) Japanese and how naming your Au Ra after your favorite anime character more than likely isn't lore-friendly because they're mostly modern names. (Cf. Xaela conventions, which can be summed up with "Pick an old Mongolian name and a tribe with a quirky custom.")
EDIT
Correction: 16th - 18th century Japanese names.
From the descriptions I've seen of them (couldn't get a book, so I may be wrong), they require a large amount of ambient aether generated from high-stress situations (i.e. heavy combat) with a bunch of people present (Pulse of Life specifically states it takes aether from manypeopleallies in the area to heal them. Not something you can do solo). So a single person really cannot generate an LB3 on their own in any sort of reasonable amount of time, even the WoL.
As far as Yda and Papalymo are concerned...what just happened beforehand, and what were they doing then? It was basically a last-ditch effort to try to buy time and save themselves.
Atleast as far as WHM LB3 seems to be concerned, for many situations the use of it would probably not go over very well for some of our allies well-being. If we had all the Scions together, or if whatever Papalymo casted on Yda works for the WHM one as well (FFVIII Aura maybe?) it could probably work, and while other PCs are not considered Warriors of Light in our story they are certainly more exceptional as to be near or on par with our level so they come out fine as well.
Alisae and the WoD Black Mage taking so long to charge up could also be explained by them and us not having as many people as would be ideal to work with, thus a larger charge time. Speaking of off topic but has anyone lost that part of the battle? I assume the BLM would use Meteor but its always possible it ends up being something else.

I remember in one of the Monk quests, with that historian explaining some history about the war between Gridania and Ala Mhigo... He mentioned something about a staff (which was significant enough to be named and all) that was lost and captured by the Ala Mhigans after one of the Gridanian commanders launched a very foolish offensive.
Does the lorebook mention anything about this? I've a feeling that staff's going to turn up somewhere with the new expansion...
off the top of my head, I think that's Claustrum, which Kan-E-Senna now wields
