To me, the issue is that people have only seen female Viera. So when they say they want a male Viera. Well, we haven't seen the male. Do the fans want someone who is similar to the female? What do they mean by male Viera? If they went off the lore we're going to get bara bunny men who would rather kill you than talk to you - even stated in the Lore that they do do this. Or, they interrogate you THEN kill you. They don't let the people go, they flat out murder them while the females don't do this.

If they want Male Viera then they're going to be off the lore - lore which you can't use the bloody excuse of a low population because we're going to the very place where that low population is, making it a high population in regards to things. They're not going to be cute. As for Yoshi not wanting to make them. Oh, I don't think that at all. I think he doesn't want to make a cute Viera. If he flat down didn't want to make a Male Viera, he wouldn't a) have lore on the males and have the females be asexual b) have his artists actually draw concepts for the male. c) state that if he had the female they'd have the male.

But things change, and we will see if we get another cat race. And then people will complain, but people will complain anyway when they find out the male Viera doesn't look cute adorable and like a small elf. But cold-blooded murderers, who only exist to breed and kill.

Yes, but are the Xaela on the same level? Especially when most of the clans of Xaela are sexist regarding their women? Do female Xaela do what male Viera do by lore in regards to the strictness of their lifestyle? The only female that is close is the Khatun of the 'Immortal' clan, who was supposedly a man before she was reborn. Honestly wish they used the original concept art of the females instead of just making them 'stay at home wifus'. Heck, I even remember that it's usually the men who do this and the women just... stay at home.And if that's not true then I have much respect for those dainty women. Edit; this isn't true and it depends on the tribe! Thank you for pointing out the error in that logic.

Note; 'stay at home wifus' is more in regards to their looks.

I can certainly see this. Especially that more and more are discontent with the way of life. All it takes it one female to leave the wood with her kits before a male comes to take them. It takes them 13 years to reach adulthood so the mother has 13 years to escape with her little boy. I can't imagine all mother's would want that for her son and perhaps is part of why they are leaving the wood. What mother would want such a life for her baby boy when she can't even take the life of being in secluded and isolated community? Her son is going to have it x 10 worse.

Where are you getting the sexism/stay at home waifus? We meet a handful of tribes in MSQ/sidequests/fates. With the exception of the all male tribe (there are no females) all tribes we meet have male/females that are expected to hunt, gather, shepherd animals, trade wares etc.

You know, thinking about it, you're probably right and I'm just projecting from Magnai. For that, I apologise. I'll make sure to research instead of going off memory! Anyway, the point stands - their lifestyles are different. Close, but extremely different. And of course, the women of the Au'ra look cute, so do female Viera. The males do not look cute - most of the time - you can, however, make them cute, but they're still tall with masculine like faces. The average Au'ra male looks pretty scary and imposing, in regards to the Xaela.

e_e I still don't like how they made them tiny and meek looking regarding the females, but I guess that's what happens when you have two tribes and one tribe is meeker than the other tribes in regards to Xaela and Raen/Rean*

There is a tribe of Xaela that is all female so they have to do everything that both males and females do, there is another xaela tribe where the males stay at home look after children etc and the females do the hunting bartering etc(one shopkeeper in reunion is part of this tribe)

Aye, you're right there! I went up and checked. So while those females aren't 'stay at home wifus' - they still look like them. Small and cute. Why? Actually I don't understand how Yoshi P came up with that and thought it was okay given how their lives are so harsh. Harsher than male Viera? Eh, not sure on that one. Male Viera live alone not in tribes. Then again, the Xaela's other 'clan' the supposed light side version, that one made more sense. I just wish they looked different to represent that in regards to height and muscle.

Of course, this all ties down to the whole cute hot small females are fine and can do these things in a fantasy setting. Or just strict cute? As in regards to Lalas.

But for some reason every other race when it comes to the males, welp... yeah

Qestir: high ranking member that makes the decision if you can trade or not in the settlement is a female. Neither male nor females really seem to fight as warriors, though both hunt
Mol: leader is a female and they have female warriors
Oronir: their most celebrated wrestlers are female and they have female warriors
Dotharl: genders are irrelevant and you are expected to fight regardless of male/female
Dataq: males and females are expected to be warriors
Dazkar: females are warriors/merchants, males are homemakers
Uyagir: the leader is a female, entire tribe is more keen to hiding than fighting
Adarkim: we don’t meet any females of this tribe so ? ? ?
Goro: horses are more important than gender
Himaa: we only meet young children of this tribe so ? ? ?

While I really, really, really would prefer fem Xaela to have been a highlander equivalent, both females were made kawaiiuguu 100% to sell fantas. LB censuses show that that was a pretty profitable decision and Cirina is very popular with the JP fandom so waifus are likely going to stay the norm should we ever get another race or a new FF MMO.



As for bunny men- some people want smol dudes, some want bishi dudes, some want bara dudes. Someone's going to inevitably be disappointed but eh thats the case for everything. If tiny lizard girls can wrestle hulking lizard men and lalas have historically been hardy little buggers, I think I can suspend disbelief regardless of what they go with.

No doubt some folks will be disappointed; hopefully, the whole Viera male crew won't be fully disappointed. Can someone tell me how the Japan forums are regarding this? Not that I expect them to listen more to the Japan community - but I do like to know if there's a rather universal outcry.

I can't help but see much of the controversy as willful ignorance on a grand scale... While i'll not repute established facts in game, (indeed, i see it as validation) i do not see how, with what SE has already given us, we can continue to pretend that the impossibility of male Viera leaving/ relocating from the wood en-mass is such a mental leap...

From what has been established thus far: The male Viera are the guardians of the Greatwoods, any attack on them on such a scale would and should prompt a response. Hence their mobilization from their home, to face the threat of the Garlean Empire.

At this stage it's probably too late anyway at least for 5.0, their race plans for 5.0 have likely been set in stone before fanfest. If they were say working on a male only race or male viera, I don't think they would suddenly drop everything and pivot to the other based on fan reaction.

I'm not too great at navigating the JP forums since they tend to have these really long discussion threads where they talk about different topics in them. Theres this topic about potential male Viera's physique I can find. The most upvoted comment is someone saying that they'll be disappointed if its female locked.

On twitter I've seen JP players express their nervousness over them showing no males shown last ff and excitement for a reveal. Lots of fanart of what they want them to look like being drawn.

What if male Viera are introduced with the Beastmaster job? I remember it being teased as a future limited job, and it would make sense for lonely Viera men to befriend and tame animals to for companionship and survival.

This does make some sense, but I doubt it given that they likely won't release another limited job this expansion. Or at least not until 2020/2021 and the lead up to 6.0.

But to be honest, I feel like regardless male Viera do need to be introduced in some form given that the greatwood is burning in the teaser trailer so obviously that had to have displaced some of them. Moreover, I find it hard to believe that having been given all that lore about how male Viera would kill you on sight for stepping foot into the greatwood, we're just supposed to waltz in there. There's even an aetheryte there..

Has anyone mentioned that they said it's difficult to make a new playable race and that's why Viera might be the last one? Why would they then go out of their way to make two races only to have each race be gender locked? I think there will be a male Viera just because of that reason alone. They're probably saving its reveal for Japan due to its historic nature.

Something I also noticed is that Nu Mou live in that forest as well. Maybe the forest fire (probably caused by Imperials) caused some of them to summon a primal, leading the Viera to seek out help from the outside world and therefore have both genders be playable?

You're onto something there regarding a primal being summoned. Interestingly enough, it could be that since the theme of ShB is to more or less bring on the darkness to prevent an overage of light, the greatwood was lit ablaze by Y'shtola/Matoya in order to cause the summoning of said primal -- though I feel that if that's the case, Fran and the other Viera are going to be less than thrilled about it.

Although, I do feel that the fire + a primal's presence might definitely warrant a call for help from the Viera, seeing as how the primal's existence is going to be draining the forest of aether. Combining that with the Viera's ability to speak to the forest (though I'm not sure if that's canonically a thing in XIV?) they'll be able to tell if the forest is growing weaker.

Could indeed be something there. The warrior of light with the echo would be able to hear the wood as well I think. What would the Nu Mou primal be? I can't imagine the Viera having a primal either, they tend to just worship the wood and there was never much beyond that only that the 'wood' was female.

I imagine that if a male Viera were to try to leave the forest, they'd likely be attacked/killed by other male Viera. I also feel that if the forest were attacked at all, then they would have even more reason NOT to leave, as leaving means there are less on the front lines keeping the invaders away from the forest and the female Viera's home. If Garleans attacked once and were met with resistance, there's a high chance they'll attack again and with more force.

Also, regarding your final sentence... that doesn't apply to playable characters at all (we're a blank slate at the beginning. You could say your character is from the forest to fight the Garlean threat, but that's your personal lore. The story at the start of ARR clearly has your character as a brand new adventurer who knows nothing about anything). Why would a male Viera (with years of brutal training in the forest), travel to Eorzea and for some reason have no knowledge on how to do anything?

Remember that WoL literally got smacked with the amnesia stick. They don't remember anything due to time travel shenanigans and no one remembers them. This includes all of their skills/memories/etc

All WoL remembers is their name and the basics - to fit with the game mechanic.
Basically;
'I don't know who I am, I don't know where I am. All I know is I must kill."

A male Viera isn't going to know poop about other Viera unless you, the creator of that character deems it so before they actually come to contact with them and the lore in the story. Well, barring their 'race' name and ofc 'Oh look I have bunny ears' I mean come on, this is the same for Au'ra Xaela or Raen -, especially Xaela.

The gender lock is exactly why they could do two races in the first place. It's not so much "one race" or "two races" as adding a new male character and a new female character, which may or may not be designed as the same race.

From a practical standpoint, creating a male-locked race and a female-locked race would be the same amount of work as a single race with both genders represented. The same number of characters need to be designed, modeled and animated.


I've said before, after Viera-and-male-counterpart (male Viera or otherwise) I think we will get one more race eventually, for a total of eight pairs of characters, but not for a long time yet - because there may be a hard limit on how many they can program in, and it really would be the last. So they don't want to get people's hopes up for more future races.

I don't think that's true because there are plenty of unisex gears and having two races mean they have to do the work for both races to make sure they fit the gears. And even in gears that are different for each sex, once you have an idea on how to make one sex fits a particular type of gear, it's not all that different to make the other sex (which would be more similar than a separate race) fit a different type of gear.

As for male Viera being at the start of ARR, you could have a bunch of reasons as to why they'd leave. For example: They abandoned their home for adventure, much like the other races. Desire to find a better life, just like the Dramaturge says many female Viera do. It could be that the Green Word they hear has told them to leave for reasons unknown. Hell, maybe the Green Word is retconned into being connected to Hydaelyn, somehow, in this world. You also assume the male Viera has years of brutal training, maybe they don't? My own male Viera wouldn't want to be a Wood-Warder, so he'd leave at a fairly young age. He can't raise himself with training, and he can't return to the village, or he'd die/be shipped out with a Wood-Warder again, so I thought it'd be neat if he was raised by Nu Mou, who seem to be in the same forests as Viera. Some of the Viera jacks were stated to die during training; I think it's fair to assume that at some point or another, at least one of them would hold some disdain for their own kind of forcing this life on them.

It's really not impossible that some male Viera leave. It's just that combined with there being few of them already and probably even less wanting to leave/actually leaving, it makes sense that most people wouldn't have seen the very few that actually do leave.

Unisex gear still has to be modeled per gender. Even in pieces that don't change to panties and thigh highs on girls, the busts, waists, and other proportions are still vastly different.

You say vastly different, but in comparison to a separate race, I think there would still be less work with the same race option.

Gear is more likely to be transferred over from other races of the same gender than to have the same model made for both male and female characters - with the obvious exception of Lalafell.

I very much agree. Work still has to be done on two different genders of one race (unique faces to each gender, etc), but it's going to be significantly less work than designing two completely different races, even with just one gender each, just because that means designing and modelling two sets of racial assets with no/minimal recycling. For one race with two genders, most assets from one gender can just be grabbed from the other gender and tweaked to fit, which is probably the case for Auri assets like the tails and horns or the Miqo'te tails and ears. The only way it would be less work is if the male-locked race was very plain, thus requiring little work. But who would be happy with that?

Imagine having to redo all the gear for feet for the sake of Viera having unique feet, and then having to do the same thing for a male-equivalent race. If we have male Viera, then most of the work for their unique feet is already done; it would just require some touch ups to look as good on the men as it did the women.

Don't see me changing race's to be one. With those weird alien looking ears.

It can both work both ways. It can either make sense of why male Viera would leave the forest and therefore make sense as a playable race. At the same time, it could also explain why male Viera have been wiped out, and therefore not available as a playable race. And if the grand majority of Male Viera are wiped out, it would make even more sense for the females to leave the forest and seek allies to combat whatever is threatening them.

I want to also point out that set of lore quotes is missing the two most important ones.

It's blatantly clear that Matsuno, who the wandering dramaturge is supposed to represent, is warning us to not get our hopes up for male Viera.

"They simply don't exist to us" is pretty much saying they don't exist at all.

Matsuno created the Viera, but he only ever showed females. He doesn't want to show males. For what reason, who knows. And there are many other signs besides the lore that rule out the possibility of playable male Viera: Yoshida's interviews, the way Viera were revealed, the accurate blue leaks, and more.

Again, I desperately hope I'm wrong. I would love to have handsome, tall bunnymen in the game. It would be great that they ended up creating this lore with the intention of breaking it.

But we're probably gonna get a male-only race that nobody really asked for. I just hope if that's the case, we get a male-only race that can be as attractive, elegant, and athletic as the female Viera. Something in between Highlander and Elezen.

I'm not sure who else might agree with me, but when I saw the concept art of those male Viera (the tall, muscular ones), I was ecstatic. That's exactly the kind of build I wanna see. Male Au Ra have amazing bodies (in my opinion), but their facial scales and horns make their faces so "busy-looking." Those male Viera on the other hand were perfect. I know I've posted several messages of hopelessness on here, but trust me, I wanna see those male Viera so bad.

But I'm warning you guys. Don't get your hopes up. Don't ignore the signs.

I'm not truly a fan of the gender locked race either, I mean extreme gender ratio is already a thing. I don't think it should be necessary to follow the Tera formula when making races. I like what they look like can't wait to see what they're all about in the story.

tbh this is the main reason I think we're getting Viera men. As a gamer himself, I cannot believe that Yoshi would not forsee the potential shitstorm of pairing an incredibly popular request with something absolutely no one asked for without any hype buildup for said thing no one asked for.

In my opinion, not quite. "They simply don't exist to us" means just that when paired with all the prior information regarding their lifestyle. They're elusive and hide out in the woods which is why they're never seen in settlements or cities. I just think he's saying that they might as well not exist since nobody's ever seen one (and lived) and they just happen to be very elusive as a result of the lifestyle that's forced upon them. But not that they don't exist, because there's still the possibility that they can still be seen if they want to be seen. This is more likely given the lore about how more and more Viera are leaving the wood in favor of adventure/the outside world.

However, that's the only point that I disagree with. I agree with you that if we're not going to get male Viera, then at least give us something equally as nice as how they made the female Viera.

I also agree with this! I think that the concept art is pretty spot on, maybe some changes here and there but that's more or less how I envisioned a male Viera that looked similar enough to the females. Maybe longer hair and facial hair to go with the lore, but that's what I'm more or less hoping for if they're to be implemented.

Yeah, this is one of the big things about gender-locking choices. Evidence of storms being kicked up over gender-locks are aplenty. The following quote from a different thread about male Viera (for those that haven't seen it) sums it up nicely:

He has to know how poorly player character limitations go over in this fandom. He also knows how long ago he first teased Viera as a possibility and how many people wanted to be males. That only applies to Legacy players, who get a different cutscene when starting ARR.

I wasn't around for this, but I have read about those bunny-girl outfits from the Gold Saucer initially being female-exclusive, and how there was such an unexpected outcry from the community over it that they soon decided to let males wear them, too.

Now that they're adding an actual bunny-girl race to the game, I don't think they'll go about it the same way. I think they learned from that experience, and will be making males an option right from the start.

To be fair, they also said that the male developers were "too uncomfortable" to design the outfits, and that they were handing them to the female designers.
