I'm moved to tears! ;_______; We must tank!! Eorzea depends on us!!
I don't get it. I always see "This is the worst/best community!" and it makes no sense. There are hundreds of thousands of people spread across all servers. There is no "community". There's a crapload of people, each of them wildly different. The more people that congregate, the higher your chances of running into both ends of the spectrum.
I see this about other websites too like reddit. There are too many people to call anything like that a community. This game is popular right now and has been getting a lot of good press. Everybody and their grandma who may have played an MMO at one time or another has probably heard about it and decided to check it out.
On topic: You ran into a selfish jerk. I hear there's a lot of those out there. It sucks, but that's what happens when you have hundreds of thousands of people playing a game.
We need something like thedirty.com but for horrible FFXIV players with horrible attitudes. Its time to put the assholes on blast.
Man...
If y'all really think the DF is that damn bad, don't use it! Obviously the people complaining have full groups of real life friends on at all times with a dedicated ventrilo room for real time communication and just use the DF because they feel like it....
Oh you don't? Exactly. You are never going to be able to control the way people act. If you put some kind of deterrent in their path, it will be more fun for them to figure out a way around that to continue harassing people and screwing up their experience. FFXIV added a way for random people to group up for dungeons, instead of traveling to different locations to shout until your digital mouth explodes to find a full group for a party.
It's pathetic to see so many people skirting around the REAL issue....which is other people. You know full well the possibility of being grouped with morons in the DF, yet you still use it? It is only there to help you find a random group of people, it is NOT there to ensure the random people you find are trustworthy gamers.
So, for the OP to entitle his post "I thought the DF couldn't get any worse"....makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. The DF is working exactly as intended. The PEOPLE using the DF are the problem. Maybe SE could add some things to the DF to discourage people who using those tactics, but there is really no solution that would work for everyone. You can't ban people from leaving, what if they're net connection died? That isn't their fault. In the instance of the OP, yes that is pure dick move and that person should be banned. However, SE can't keep tabs on hundreds of thousands of concurrent plays at the same time.
In short, the DF works. Stop bashing a system that is trying to help, and proceed with more bashing of the actual people destroying the experience. :)
I see so all you people that want cross server BL's will be adding all of us new people that have a hard time getting into instances once, and lack experience...Its so bad I'm avoiding these group instances till things settle down, and newcomers are treated better. My suggestion, have DF divided into degrees Beginner (players that have not cleared a instance once and need it to advance story will be matched with each other) 2nd group arranged parties playing after clearing duty once can do it in a pre-arranged party, 3rd advanced this crowd has done content more than 3 times. This would be nicer for those that need to do it once and want understanding players that the content is equally new to them as well.
No, don't even blame the PS3 players - There are FAR more horrendous PC players in terms of attitude and playstyle - Which community started the phrase 'Master Race' as an idiotic joke and sometimes in a serious manner? PC gamers or console gamers? Go visit PC only MMOs and think back to the CS and BF (PC) prime days.
I am much inclined to agree..this community really isn't good, even worse than what ended up in 1.0 since even then people at least had to deal with their own server community and reputations mattered. People said the Duty Finder would be the magical fixall! :\ People say Tera's is the worst now that it's F2P but..I haven't ran into people who pull the crap here that they do there yet lol.
Write down the name > Search Lodestone > Make a character there or use the CS > Report. I've done it for a few griefers and actually seen them end up banned at least temporarily considering they were complaining here before their topic got deleted about an "unfair ban". The only reason this won't work sometimes if if they use a name like Naruto Uzumaki or Uzumaki Naruto.
I think that the DF does indeed promote a lack of respecto and selfishness by some players.
There is nothing we can do about this since i dont think SE will remove it
The duty finder breeds tank/healer corruption. DPs wait on them to que and they get instant or nearly instant ques. It's only natural for some tanks to take advantage of this system. The problem isn't really the duty finder though, it's human nature. That tank is the kind of person that would go a a public event just to get something for free and then leave without contributing anything. However the duty finder is designed in such a way that human nature can surface.
Imo, chests should spawn after you clear the last boss and you should have to backtrack to get them all. Let's say chests are under a cloak and killing the last boss removes the cloak.
I was in the last 8 man dungeon ( the last one needed for the main story) and basically some people wanted to watch the cut scenes and the healer got mad and left b/c of this...then the whole party got into a fight and the tank refused to move...yeah DF is shi**y
all SE needs do to ensure the OP's scenario never happens again is make chests linked to a boss mob - meaning a chest that is linked to a boss mob can not be opened till the boss mob it's linked to is dead
all SE needs do to ensure no one passes trash mobs and goes straight to boss mobs is to make the boss mobs linked to the trash mobs near them - meaning a boss mob can not be engaged until all the trash mobs that are linked to it are dead
all MECHANICAL duty finder problems solved
for all "ATTITUDE" duty finder problems, SE is going to TRY to solve those by giving out "MVP" points to players whom get "voted up" by other players in duty finder
players may only "vote up" RANDOM players in duty finder - if players queue with a party, they MAY NOT "vote up" them - players MAY NOT "vote up" themselves, ither
every "vote up" will give a player an "MVP" point - there will be a CAP on how many TOTAL times players can "vote up" players PER DAY and players may only "vote up" EACH player ONCE per day
players can "vote up" other players for any reason they want to, but the working theory is that players will only "vote up" a player that is helpful and/or kind and never "vote up" players that are trolling and/or mean
"MVP" points can be spent on many items such as mounts, minions, etc...
Random Chest (Job specific accessories, Allagan Coins, Pet chests) - Clear the room it's located in/Clear the "miniboss" kind of like the Coeurl in Brayflox is technically guarding it.
Loot Chests - Move everything (Relic bases, armor, accessories etc) to a second boss chest drop (since some bosses only drop 1 chest still.)
Then problem is certainly solved, since people like that would just leave after the first boss if they got their weapon after the first easy boss. Hell no matter what they do people will find a way to do crap like this :\

I was the tank. Kim was the healer.
This is the whole reason I've been pushing for same-server-only matching function (in addition to cross server default) since beta. But Yohi-P had been adamant that all he wants is efficiency of forming a party. He doesn't care about what experiences we have in the Duty Finder. Just the numbers.
Lack of accountability is the key deficiency. Hopefully the 2.1 LFG board would alleviate it for some of us who value quality more than efficiency.
I turn off party chat.
I had a duty finder troll experience a few days ago in Aurum Vale with a BLM named Aeer Kahyet. I always mark the mobs for my party, but this BLM decided to mark them for me by using the other signs that weren't numbers at all. Every time I would try to mark my mob he would immediately change it. Poor Archer in the party was so confused. So yeah...I agree that Duty Finder just makes everyone feel like they can be a troll/ass to someone just because they won't ever see us again. I'm all for making a world wide shitlist.
Atm it doesn't matter if a chest is being guarded, a tank can open everythign to the first boss and just die and leave. That is what needs to be fixed. Or they need to make all the chests with gear in them spawn after the first boss.
I hate to be the rude dude here, but that may have been your fault. I have characters on Leviathan, and I've chatted around and have had little to no negative experience with whom I've chatted with, no matter where or who I've talked to. I hate to point this out, but your character there may be the issue. It is an unoriginal idea to simply create a clone of a character already existing within the series.
With such a thriving roleplay community, I can understand why people don't want to see a Rinoa clone in a game series where she made an appearance. Especially since this game follows the design of the older games, before VII. I'm not saying it's right to be so judgemental, but I can tell you why you may be addressed in such a light.
I always thought that the original group finder for WoW was the best, you could sign up for LFM or LFG, but it wouldn't just slide you into a party on it's own. You still needed a party leader, which is good because there is no system to having a dungeon leader in the current LFD tool. When it's in the hands of a player to form the group, they will put forth a little more effort during the actual run, marking targets to trap/sleep, ensuring all members of the group know the fights, etc. The people looking for a group are encouraged to play nice with PUGs, because if they have a poor image, party leaders will quickly make sure to never invite that person to future dungeon runs. While these cross server groups make it a bit faster to get your dungeon going, I would much prefer a tool that actually encourages players to socialize with others over a tool that just gets you to your destination as fast as possible. If I needed instant action like that, I would play a game like Torchlight.
This is a great start. Along with that, I'd suggest:
4)Vote to kick, initiated by anyone in the party and requiring majority vote. Only works when the initiator is out of combat
5)Cross server black list
6)Right click report function for asshats
7)Ability to turn off all cutscenes after the first time you have seen them in character configuration
Hopefully this will help deal with the AFK leechers and other such jerks in the group. The cutscenes is a quality of life issue - it's annoying to hit ESC every damn time. The issue of people actually watching cutscenes is annoying, but I suppose if the rest of us just go on ahead and they don't get any loot, they'll stop doing it.
I've said it before and I'll say it again - Duty finder is a random group finder where the majority of the time people want to do speed runs. If you want to enjoy the story, either a)do it with friends so you don't have to annoy the DF groups, or b)watch the cutscenes in your Inn room.
The people who sit and make an entire group wait because they have to watch that cutscene, are as selfish and worthy of my blacklist as the jerks who AFK leech tomes, or run ahead for loot boxes. You need to be considerate and think of the majority when you're in a group. It's not about you and what you want and that attitude is what's ruining endgame for a lot of us.
Proof? What's your sample size? Did you chat around on every single server? It's a consensus that the community isn't that great, no one said anything about specific servers being bad and some being good, over all, in general it's a bad community - there's always exceptions.
Btw, some of the most awesome people I've met were a play on a FF character name, so get that generalization out of your head. While true there's a precedence for people named after character to invoke ire of a community...OP did no such thing.
The problem here is two-fold. First, this guy was a jerk and shouldn't have done this..
HOWEVER..
This also wouldn't have happened if SE allowed us to enter dungeons WITHOUT THE DUTY FINDER. It still boggles my mind why we can't simply form a group and walk into a dungeon, they need to re-look at this.
I believe the people that get butt hurt over a name are the people at fault. Seriously, they need to get over themselves. If someone wants to name their character by a past FF character's name because they like them then let them. Don't be so quick to judge someone by a name.
Ofcourse this mmo has the worst community of all the mmos... Weird that people say how many mmos they've played and don't notice the pattern.
I've played most of the main mmorpgs that have come out in the last decade and particularly the last 2 years every single forum has a bunch of "worst community ever" complaints.
This is just FFXIV ARR's Worst Community Phase. The thousands of mmo jumpers move from game to game like locusts. They rush through the content, they get burned out, want to make the current company and fanboys pay for letting such a failed mmorpg exist, then they move to the next one. And whichever Wildstar or Elder Scrolls Online will be the next "worst community ever" and this one will be a collection of players that actually like the game. But if a previous "worst community ever" game goes free-to-play....because they'll all come back for 2 weeks to troll some more.
Tanks are attracting the worst kind of players..
young punk kids
and older people with serious problems
there is also a sense of narcissism and ego boost with these tanks....
doesn't bode well for the community a good FC should fix some of these
especially the ones that kick their members for this kind of behavior
right now that's our only safe haven..it's like
THE ENEMY WITHIN
The moment something bad happens because of a rotten player, "worst community ever". Then you get a good group that pulls together for say, hard garuda or titan. "Best community ever". You just got a bad run, it's the internet, crap happens. Sorry.
It's not just tanks though. I've seen dps that just sit there and AFK leeching tomes. Or in an Ifrit group if it doesn't have the perfect group makeup they leave, screwing everyone else over since we can't find new players. I've seen all sorts of jerk moves from various classes/roles, so let's not just blame all the tanks. I've had some really great and considerate tanks.
I run across douchebags once in every 15-20 DF groups I get in. Maybe I'm just overly lucky and all, but to me, this kinda people and incidents are the exception, not the trend. That being said, I don't know what you can expect SE to do. There's rude and disrespectful people online all the time. And as much as it sucks, being rude and inconsiderate is not a crime. How do you police it?
Although with this type of behaviour, maybe they can do a "you can't loot a chest while in combat" mechanic?
Wow you go on about how great people are in the community by pretty much being a complete jerk, way to go. The name they picked had nothing to do with the issue presented, you seem to have a personal beef with people using FF character names and try to twist the issue at hand to justify bad behavior towards this person. There is nothing in the TOS that say they can't use the name, so I am sorry that bothers you but they are well within their rights to use it.
These people are definitely to blame, it's true. But the one who deserves the greater portion of the blame is S-E for condoning this type of behavior. As anyone who's tried to report people like this can attest, S-E's response is that people can play however they want and you don't get to judge. As long as that attitude continues, their behavior will as well.
