Yeah, this is a game we all paid for and then have to sub and I mean the game is brand new and here comes Calvary of hackers.
Game ain't even a month old. I'm pretty sure a lot of people on here, who are older, aren't as silly as those f2p Maple Story crybabies and went to some site and got screwed over. If people used: A different password, the token, never went to any site and all. No one is safe.
AFAIK: Blizzard/WoW ha s a rollback system, and SE/XIV does not.

1. It is SE fault because their security is borked. According to the first person in my quote's you needed the token or else you're getting hacked lol.
2. The live chat support, worst I ever encountered. They leave so f-in fast before you can get a word in edgewise shows horrible horrible supporting skills.
"We don't know, okay bye have a nice day." Instantly kicked off chat without asking for any more assistance.
They are rude and it takes hours or just kicks you off the que.
3. They explain in e-mail why is was suspended but trying to talk to them about it takes weeks.

You have to call, that's the only way to get through. The number is 310 846 0345. Make sure you are calling right at 9:00 am pst or you won't get through. You'll still have to wait on hold up to an hour. But if you call at 9:02 you'll wait about 2 hours and then your call will get dropped from the line being overcrowded.

I just talked to them, they escalated my claim and said it will take about two weeks to get unlocked.. IF my gil or gear was stolen I will have to put in another claim.

I think everyone here is failing to understand how accounts become compromised. 99% of the time your login information is taken from another party. Yahoo mail is a good example. They have had multiple security breaches, and it's easily possible for a search algorithm to run through all of a person's e-mails and look for specific data on account names and passwords. This data is then sold to, in this case, gil selling websites. If you use a common account name, in this example "JohnDoe", and a common/similar password like "password1" or variations like "Psaswrod2" then it is pretty simple to brute-force an account.

Why is your account not immediately locked when it is maliciously accessed? Account thefts are not usually done by a person. They're run by a 'bot'. Often times these bots are powered by compromised or corrupted computers of ignorant people, and these computers could easily be in your own country. IP addresses can also be faked, although some security systems can see through it.

Accounts compromised with a security token? It is possible, but extremely unlikely. One would have to own an ridiculously infected computer to legitimately get hacked through an authenticator. Any sources that tell you otherwise are simply false, or covering an obvious mistake. One time passwords are a very complex and encrypted algorithm that are extremely difficult to bypass. The chances of brute-forcing an authenticated account are lower than winning the lottery, getting struck by lightning, and then being eaten by a shark in the same day.

All of these basically sum up to the fact that the more data a hacker has on your account, the more likely it is to be compromised. Losing an account can easily be a coincidence, maybe you're just unlucky, but it most likely is your fault somewhere down the line for using predictable passwords or account names. I have played mmo's for 10 years, a majority of that time without additional security over passwords, and never been 'hacked'. I have had my e-mail compromised before and quickly changed passwords for every important service I have. Blame SE and say I'm wrong all you want, either way, you're the one waiting for account restoration.

I think most of the people here are simply wondering why it takes more than 3 days to get our accounts back. This security thing is not a really hard concept to grasp and I don't get why EVERYONE thinks we're complaining about that.

Key points of all this:

-Why does it take so long to get our accounts back?

-Why does chat just disconnect you when you get to the head of the line?

-Why isn't there communication from SE as to why these customer support issues are happening?

many -hacked- accounts are from people attempting to buy gil, or buy power levels, many more are people clicking a link that looks official without checking the attached hyper link, then many other times beyond this it's not because they don't use the security token but simply the fact they could have picked something up somewhere that had a keylogger, the keylogger returns information the people who get that information then sell it. i've also seen quite a few people who got legitametly hacked using to easy of a password, it's not always their fault. and se can't always get an account back if it's found in major violation, when they do it takes a lot of work, to return an account to its original owner usually requires proof of ownership, then this has to be passed to others it's a lovely slow chain of bear...yeah i can't spell that lmao.

One of the best suggestions to get a stolen account back is not only call se but see if they will accept your picture i.d and whatnot.

And what part of your analogy is different from mine. You're leaving your password/key to your property unsecured. People do it all the time because they "never had something bad to them" happen before. It only takes one time for people to smarten up, and some people still insist on convenience over security.

At no point in time is SE at fault for blame if you lose access to your account if you did not do everything in your power to secure it, and related accounts. People still leave their keys in the ignition when they go to drop a letter in the mailbox, and people still leave passwords written down on sticky notes and don't delete emails containing usernames and passwords.

The point of this thread was someone insisting that the BBB is their solution. It is not. Want to know how the BBB works?

X many people complain about service not being provided by Y
BBB calls up Y and tells them they will get a bad rating if they do nothing to fix X's problem.

The follow up to that is, because of the bad rating, people won't go to that company for service, hence the car analogy. This is why it doesn't work if there is no competing service. SE can just ignore the BBB forever until something bad happens on a huge scale that really is their fault, in which case it's not the BBB that does anything, but the Media attention. The BBB just asks for membership fees, and their "bad rating" magically goes away, even if the complaints continue.

Getting hacked and leaving your password on a post-it are two totally different things.

Let me put this in plain English for you: HACKING IS ILLEGAL.

I cannot believe what I've read in these pages. People are arguing back and forth with each other and either blaming the victim or blaming SE. The fault lies first and foremost with the hacker. Hacking is illegal.

Regardless of whether it is a game, money you put into a bank, credit under your name through a credit card, a car, your home, or anything else... if it's not yours and you were not not given express permission to have it, then it is theft.

There is a reason Security Tokens are called a SECONDARY line of defense. It is the user's responsibility to keep their information safe. It is the company's responsibility to make sure the security information that they store is kept safe. If you did not give your information away and if it wasn't gained through a hole in the company's line of defense, then it isn't anyone's fault but the hacker. Also, each case is an individual situation. We can guess but unless it's happened to us, we don't know why or how it happened. Arguing amongst ourselves doesn't help to figure out where the breach is coming from.

I wish everyone luck in getting their individual situation resolved.

So I got an official response from SE on my complaint from the BBB:

We do apologize for any delays they have experienced in receiving a result in this matter, but we ask for their patience while we look into the case further. We accept this customer's feedback, and we are always looking to improve our turnaround times as well as streamlining these procedures as much as possible to resolve customer's issues as fast as possible.

This customer seems to be suggesting that a 3rd party may have logged into the account and caused the violation and subsequent account termination. We would like to remind this user that the accounts security is the user's responsibility and that they hold no ownership rights to the account in question. SQUARE ENIX Cannot be held responsible for any loss of game time or other compensation due to the violations that caused the account to be terminated.

It seems like SE likes to treat their customers like criminals. Oh well. I guess they won't be getting my money any time soon. I'll be abandoning the FF franchise. It was fun while it lasted.

Like I said, you think you have some right to play the game, no matter how poorly you protect your account access information.

I'd much prefer SE just require account authentication devices/apps for everyone, and that would be the end of it except the portion of players who use internet cafes or share a family computer.

Of course this is victim blaming. Go ask anyone who works in customer support how often the customer calls in for stupidity on the part of the customer. Few people want to admit it's their own fault. Once we get past the "It's the company's fault for letting (colorful metaphor for lack of intelligence)'s like me play" stage of the blame game we move on to solving the problem.

The problem is, again:
a) People reused usernames and passwords for their email and game, or other games and this game
b) People downloaded rootkits/malware loaded bots or unauthorized game modifications
c) People were stupid enough to buy gold from one of the hackers (do you really think you can trust a gold seller when they're using hacked accounts to advertise?)

No one has a right to anything. But I will do everything in my power so that Square Enix never gets a single penny from me ever again. If Square Enix actually has organized information on their support page, the man power to handle all the issues that their customer base are having, and better business sense I probably wouldn't have to be waiting 10+ days to get my compromised account back.

Once again, people fail to realize that we're complaining about the 14+ days of waiting of getting our account back. I don't find this very 'acceptable' at all. Other competitive MMOs will recover your account within a day at the latest.

I'm not arguing that it's the customer's fault for having their account compromised(although I don't agree with it).

I've had many accounts without some clunky 'authenticator' and they've never been hacked so I find this argument invalid. I'm a firm believe of 'if they want to hack your account, it WILL get hacked no matter what' so I take everything with a grain of salt.

Sorry, but SE's customer support sucks. I'm sure each and every single person on the team works their butt off, but the lack of direction and improvement in the management level is baffling.

I find it hilarious that these hardcore SE fans will go so far as to pretend that there's nothing wrong with the company. Are they ever SO wrong and they really need to wake up and smell the horrible stench that is their customer support.

It's kinda like your bank account, if you dont protect your details well eventually you will get burned. Sure, if the fraudster's did not exist, this would not be necessary but unfortunately they do, so we need to take every step to protect our accounts.

I've worked at a game company customer support before and I totally disagree with you. You also shouldn't have to be required to pay for additional 'security tokens' if you don't have a smart phone.

I can understand if someone's account gets hacked 4 times or more but 1 time? Thinking that that's the customer's fault is not only irresponsible but ignorant as well.

Like I've said time and time again, the complaints are that the customer support is taking 14+ days to restore accounts to working order. How is this acceptable? If your cell phone gets hacked and your provider shuts down your service for 14+ days would you be ok with that? Oh and you won't be credited for your 14 days since you know, it's your fault that it was hacked.

One time is one time too much. The amount of effort to required to fix "once" is likely equal to an employees entire shift if automated tools are not in place.

I worked for a cell phone company before, they employ overtime or hire more staff if they can't maintain the 98% "calls answered in 90 seconds" Service level agreement. If a customer is without service, it's because they broke or lost their phone, or they lied to the seller/reseller about where they live. Resellers just want to make a buck and will saddle customers with additional "service chargeback" agreements where if you cancel service they charge you, the customer for the loss in their commission. Now who is at fault here? The customer for not reading the agreement, or the reseller for being a sleazeball while promoting our companies services?

Want to know how long it takes to prorate a cell phone bill? Nothing, because the computer does it automatically. Want to know how much time is spent fixing a prorated bill because the customer didn't listen to the part about it prorated service plans also prorates the included minutes or data? usually an hour.

You can't fix customers unwillingness to read fine print or listen to legally binding language.

The experience with SE mirrors the experience with the other company I worked for more closely, where service levels vary by season. SE should have hired additional staff for the game launch... because launch problems always happen.

I may sound unhappy about the call center work I've been through, but that's because I worked the escalation queue.

Cell phone contracts are pretty detailed as to what is and isn't included. Did you ever read the TOS for FFXIV? Nowhere did I see anything about being hacked is the user's fault and that they're not able to get their play time back. You're ignorant. A third party leaked SE account information. SE confirmed that was a fact.

If you're going to condescend to people, get your facts straight.

Furthermore, even if it was your mistake, the inability to contact SE is unacceptable. That's akin to an insurance company, while billing you for their services, having excessive lead times that prevent you from filing a claim. I sat on hold from 100% to 0% phone battery multiple times (mind you, I wasn't hacked, I had other issues) before I finally called the literal second they were open, and still waited half an hour.

You don't appear to understand acceptable terms of business.

Well even though they pay to be a member in the BBB You now have to pay the BBB 10-25 bux per each complaint you file. unless they made a change for the 2nd time considering in the last 13 years I have lived in Indiana they added a price tag to it.

The way I've written it clearly stated that SE confirmed that third parties leaked information. Without being too abrasive, what part of that implies it's SE's fault? "A third party has leaked...". The blame is neither on the shoulders of SE nor the user. It is on third parties shoulders, further down the river it's on the hacker themselves. The insurance company analogy also fits as a perfect example. A third party created an issue that your service provider is neglecting to respond to in a timely manner. No, square enix didn't total your car, but, it's their job to answer your phone call.

The customer service fiasco of responding (or lack there of) to an outside issue directly effecting their paying end-user is on SE's shoulders, however. I understand their business model doesn't accommodate for a staff large enough to handle launch issues as well as a surge of account security issues at the same time. That doesn't make it acceptable for the end-user.

Sounds more like a new community rep for one position. That is not going to solve their customer service issues. And usually it turns out to be 'Deal with it. More employees are not in the budget and this is just a phase.' It doesn't help they are hiring EU based on English with French or German. Basically EU talks to NA who then has to talk to JP....
