BTW the chat options don't just reference cloud and Tifa, they mention Aerith as well.
"Sin" (from FFX) is referenced with the first cutscene involving the Garlean preparations when you first board the airship to the other city-states.
Really? I remember the seen, but if he used the word "Sin" are you sure he was referencing Sin from FFX? I think he was using it as a regular term.
I'll correct that. Thank you.
Aranwade:
Wow! Thank you! That was a lot to go through, so I won't address them individually. Some of them I felt were too general or more just a feeling rather than a reference, but atleast half of them are being added to my list. Thank you!
FFXIV? more like FFVII the mmo
I added most of the references you posted to the main post and credited you for them.
I also added a few other references I found. Bacchus Wine from FF in general, The airship minion is modeled after the invincible, etc. I also moved the Judges reference to Tactics since Judges were in Tactics first.
I think the boss of the Tam-Tara Deepcroft is fought in an area called "Eternal Calm". Could that kind of be a reference to FFX/X-2?
In the waking sands in Vesper Bay their is an NPC Lalafel named 'Tataru'. 'Tarutaru' was the name of the Lalafel race in FFXI
Hmmm... it's possible.
Yes, sorry I meant Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. I figured I'd just group all the Tactics games together on the main list.
That's interesting. I'll have to rewatch the cutscene. Thanks!
A few people have mentioned that. I didn't think it was a reference, but since so many think it is, I'll add it.
I re-formatted the main post for easier reading. I also created a new section for "Possible References". If you guys see something on that list and think it belongs in the main list, let your voice be heard. If the opinion is popular, I'll concede and move it on up. I also added about 5-6 more references edited into AranWade's earlier post.
A re-occuring name throughout the series, but most would probably recognize it from FFVII, is the name 'Highwind' shows up as the name of Highwind Skyways, the name of the airship company in Eorzea.
Additionally, Cid's surname in FFXIV, Garlond, is slightly modified reference to Garland, the main antagonist of FFI, and an antagonist in FFIX (it's pronounced the same anyway).
well the 2 refrences i contributed i dug up more info on

the Ice Axe of Snow from Lighting Returns will be Added in a Patch
The Eternal Calm is a blatant FFX reference, I have no idea why you see fit to mark it as dubious, it's a term that is a specific plot point in the X series and it's not a common phrase in normal vernacular or any other media.
There's a side quest called The Blood Price, which was one of the best skills available in FFTA2.
I like the thread and all, but when i see there is no "Final Fantasy XII" part im like: "Dude, this game is like almost done by ivalice alliance, the number of FFXII references is just mindblowing, how in the hell did you not put at least some of em".
I mean, the very blue dots or target lines, even the way HP bars and targets are displayed, is like a FFXII port.
Not sure if it has been pointed out, but the missions with the Sylphs have a reference to Kefka, they call you the "Dancing one" which could be seen as a subtle reference to him as his theme was Dancing Mad, and one Sylph states that s/he "hates, hates, hates, HATES" something, though i forget what. That is also something Kefka was known for saying.
you forgot the Mamool Ja are a referance to FFXI bubbly Bernie Referance to FFXI and the little Rat people are also first appeared in FFXI

For some reason, I forgot that life after Sin was called the "Eternal Calm". I was thinking people were implying it was a reference to the 10-year calm between Sin attacks, in which case it could have just been coincidence. I'll move it up. I'll also add the Tactics reference. Thanks!
Thank you, I'll add each of these references.
Thank you! Added!
I think it's more a reference to Final Fantasy 7 though, but I'll add it to the list. Thanks!
Thank you, I'll make corrections.
The problem is that this game had some of the same designers/team as Final Fantasy XII. Yeah, there are a ton of similarities, but that's mostly because they have the same developers. That team liked the use of blue dots in XII so they used them in XIV as well. Same goes for a lot of other so-called references. I'll use Laiferr's quote to help me:
I can't add those references when they're not actually references. However, I understand your train of thought. I'm going to add one reference to the Final Fantasy XII list that simply states there are a lot of similarities in style and common use of certain features. Thanks!
Thanks, I'll add this!
I'll add the Mamool Ja and Bubbly Bernie references.
Thanks, I'll add these!
I'm confused a little. Are they in Final Fantasy XIV as monsters? FATE? Dungeon? Or is it yet unrevealed and they've just shown concept art?
Whew, that was a lot to go through. Alright, so I'd like to clarify some things. I'm trying to only list references that aren't common among many final fantasy games. For instance, The Tonberry King is in a few games, but first appeared in Final Fantasy 8. So I listed him as a reference to that game. However, Tonberries in general have become a staple of Final Fantasy, similar to Chocobos and Moogles. Even if they didn't appear in the first few games, I still doubt the developers are trying to directly reference the first game it was in. They're simply using creatures, characters, music, etc that are a staple in the franchise. Due to the high amount of people listing them though, I'll make one reference in the final fantasy series section that talks about the general final fantasy feel.
To add on to Magitek being a reference to FFVI, in the artbook, there's a drawing of the Magitek Research Facility, which is a location (dungeon, if you will) in VI.
