They did the final save too early. Many people still had a laundry list of things they wanted to do, but after the final save there was no point logging on, so the population declined.
I guess the reason it shut down so early was because they wanted to get the "final event" out of the way, which wasnt exactly must-see material anyway, so I dont get why they were in such a rush to let players experience that.
They definitely could have kept it up all this time for people to enjoy. Transferring data can't possibly take this long, even if they had to do it pains-takingly by hand, every individual bit of info at a time, which is just an implausible concept anyway, but perhaps the only justification.
