This inevitable outcome is what scares me the most.

Heh, I remember so many of us repeating the "Wait and see" line to many of the questions being raised during the 1.0 beta. Myself included. We don't know what they have planned for the AH! We are only seeing the three starter areas, they haven't put in the landscape variety yet! We don't know what they mean by fatigue! Wait and see!
I really hope we don't do that again. I have faith in Yoshi-P but that means I have faith that he will listen to our concerns rather than do what his predecessors did. Which is ignore everything and say Wait and see!
I wasn't a fan of fishing in 1.0 because I found it boring. It actually put me to sleep. But I expected they were going to fix fishing not make it even more boring.
So I hope we are just misunderstanding what he means.
Also, I feel compelled to mention that fishing was not random like some here have said. If you knew what you were doing you could almost always get the exact fish you were looking for on every cast.
I'm very sad by this. I liked fishing cause it was a challenge. T.T
Indeed - and the only way you could ever make any money because 99% of the fish sold for less then how much it cost to buy the bait. Targeting good alchemy/cooking synths and GC donation fish was where the money was at (that and crystals).
I wouldn't mind a delay in the release of the class if it means our fisher will have a more exciting or at least fair economical power - if we are understanding the scenario correctly please pass the message to Yoshida Reps, if not.. heheheheheh its the forums lol
I was just thinking this. I'd be fully willing to take a delay on fishing if it meant we'd get meaningful content. And yeah, targeting certain fish was a must by the end. I sold a lot of navigator's ears near the end, in hopes of saving up enough for a nice little house somewhere in Limsa.
Sorry for leavin you guys to stew over the thread for a few hours, had to sneak in 3hours sleep before an appointment... the joys!
Ahem.
I'm really stoked that I'm not the only one that is worried by this system. To those that would just like to troll the thread and post things along the lines of "Hurr u mad!" I suggest you find another thread. (And yes, I did read the question and answer from the live letter :p for those who are asking what information I have to base my rage on rofl, hell it's in the OP! If you read beyond the title you'd see it too :) .)
I'm praying we'll be pleasantly surprised with fishing in 2.0 but from what it sounds like from both the translation from the live letter it seems like it's going to be a monotonous point and wait fest><. Easy doesn't instantly = fun ;~;
A bunch of my friends have been reassuring me, saying that no Japanese developer would ever put in a system like this, no game developer would put in a system like this due to how easy it would be to bot, that "actions" probably refers to gathering skills, that the combination of knowing what rod and what bait to use will be the complexity, but I'm still really worried. I'd love to have a dev response in here instead of having to wait till bloody april to get my answer.
Agreed >_<. It would be awesome to get a little heads up saying "Hey, please don't sweat it! You'll get to do ______ to catch your fish!"
I would be so happy if we did have to fight the fish and I am hoping that the 'no actions' was a funky translation lol.
No actions = do nothing?
or
No actions = no abilities like btn/min?
Just a random sort of derail (?) but what did people think of Zelda, and other visual fishing games in context of an MMO (more in dept then WoW watch the bauble and click)
I could fish navigator ears and sharks etc ok was the damn toads that pissed me off :P
Overall meant the comment as an overall sentiment, and why i believe the devs are taking the approach were assuming they are taking. I say assuming because we really wont know till we see it in game.
1,0 betas problem wasn't so much that people would say "wait and see" so much as once they saw and commented on it nothing was done about it from what ive been lead to believe by some of the 1.0 beta tester comments. There really is no reason to assume that any feedback we give in phase 3 about fishing will just be ignored completely, and Yoshi-P has said that he will delay the official launch if necessary till he feels the game is completely ready.
Cool.. That what I was dreaming happened to fishing when I first heard about the change, but as official translations came out it became more bleak then good news lol
I'd love to have lost spearfishing for a visual tactical play - struggling with your fish, a lot of 1.0 could be carried across like this too, certain fish are weak in patterns and more.
Direction you pull, slack vs no slack, how hard you pull.. All in combination with gear, bait, and pole I think you could be pretty crazy of a gathering class.
Alright guys my reference to Answers earlier inspired me, so here you go. This is for fun, not for serious discussion. ;) Also please don't bother telling me I have no life, I already know.

I cast my line, tell us why must we wonder.
Release your thoughts, for the currents drag us under.
My arms grow tired, the sea’s bounty we plunder.
How can we carry on? The boat’s about to go under.
To all of my fishies, teeming spawn in the rivers,
To all of my fishies, which the deep wells deliver,
The bait yearns for bites, and the lines a strong caster.
O Immortal Lu Shang, look to those who walk after.
Shining is the Sea’s light of justice.
Ever flows the Sea’s well of purpose.
Fish free! Fish free! Fish free…
The Sea’s alive, so believe…

Now open your eyes while our plight is repeated.
Still deaf to our cries, lost in hope we lie defeated.
Our spears have been broken, and our lures have been taken.
For the sins of the past, we fear our future forsaken.
Forums filled with snark, these trials dissuade us not.
Anxious posts, filled with speculation, betray our thoughts.
Mired by a plague of doubt, the Fishers, we mourn.
Trolls bind all we hold to a memory of scorn.
Tell us why, given rods, we must leave our cod? The system is flawed!

The Deep is a riddle, bearing bounty and fortunes,
But possessing a power to make us all orphans:
In one fleeting moment, from the Sea doth fish flow;
Yet in one fleeting moment, now the tempest doth blow—
In the same fleeting moment, thou must sink, swim, and flow.
Having fished in ffxi for all those years and being a mod on a dol site since 14 came out.. it is really just a meh moment reading all this fishing info for ARR.
I thought 1.0 was lame for fishing. Gear didn't matter, fish were all easy to catch.. there was nothing going on with the guild except the worthless marks. Basically nothing like they had in 11. I wanted them to improve upon 11 and 1.0 and take it even further to something that would make us dol players very happy.
To me it sounds more like actual fishing is going to be an automated snooze fest and they'll have some contest or tournaments for the "sport" part of it like it's a freakin Bassmasters Classic now.
I wanted that part though badly. It's like taking the Selbina contest a huge step further but don't do away with the enjoyment of fishing. What is this select a fishing pole stuff for specific water? That has the sound of an automated list where we'll choose from a pole they offer us for that specific water or are they expecting us to have multiple poles on hand? C'mon man..
If they don't want us to think the worst then don't give out details like this. I know it's hard to fathom but there are countless players who love DoL. who love fishing, botany, mining but especially fishing. Here is hoping for the best but a little anger doesn't hurt anything in fact I think it helps because maybe they'll realize they need to make things more clear or maybe the direction they are going in isn't the right one.
I want contests, I want end game rods to work towards like the ebisu and not the lame and useless Luminary, I want fishing gear/armor, goals to work towards like we had in 11 with guild points and then take all that and go a huge step further with things we never imagined and make us say oh wow this is gonna be awesome not wtf are they thinking?
We shall see..

A million times this.
:C Fishing was my favorite gathering class... One of my overall favorite things to do in the game (I even have an alt dedicated to fishing).... I was likewise extremely disappointed to hear that apparently fishing has NO player involvement anymore. I could just throw out my line and leave the computer? Just throw out the line and read a book?? No, I wanna feel like I'm fishing!! The only reason you couldn't talk to people before was because they had an annoying timer that made you auto-lose your fish if you waited even 5 seconds between actions. All they'd need to do is remove THAT, and people would be able to talk to eachother AND be involved in fishing.
lol heck if this is how it's going to be then at least give me the option of chartering a deep sea fishing boat trip with a cooler full of beer and a couple of hotchicksMithra in bikinis so I can reel in dinner and get drunk and a tan.
All of this aside, this really is an EXCELLENT suggestion. I would LOVE if they would be able to implement a 'buy your own personal sailboat' system for fishers. (I know this suggestion has come up before.) This would be amazing, wouldn't it? Maybe they could implement a new zone area called "Deep Sea" or something where rare and valuable fish could be caught. Regular fishers could buy passage on an npc boat, but it would only last so long (30 minutes per ticket or whatever). People with their own sailboats could stay out as long as they want... and it would not be an instanced zone so we could all /say and /shout to each other while we fish...
/oneday...
Yeah, I'd sink my money into a sailboat so fast the economy would feel it for years.
Sad thing is, if the information from the Massively article is true then fish won't have any economic bearing and it won't matter if people botted or not.
I guess we'll just have to "Please look forward to it" and see how things pan out.
And for all the people who say how random fishing was in 1.0, I have a spreadsheet that says otherwise. (or you could just look on mooglebox)
I want lazy EZ mode fishing. Seriously, I wanna put my feet up and be able to play with mouse only. Click water and profit.
This information really makes me a sad about the direction fishing is going. There could be so many awesome opportunities with fishing and gathering in general that can make it so much more exciting yet I think they don't have a focus on it at all, everything is going towards battle classes.

ah crap i fell asleep again, its gonna take forver to level this stupid class
I understand this completely. Although their intentions towards fishing were somewhat vague, I'm not so sure they would cheapen it so much as to make it too easy. At least I really hope not. Waiting around for phase 3 to test it out is going to be torturous though. :(
Fish smish never has it been as important as btn kupo. Buuuut still taking it aaay all together....maybe the fishers gonna go after my treesss.....nuuuuuuuu kupo!
Give me jigs or give me death
Not being a fisher, the change upsets me because it upsets Llen. Llen is one of the most helpful people and the game would be worse if he was not in it. My $.02. Make fishing still matter.
