I sort of wish players could only choose one job.

Thank God this game is not like WoW where you get stuck with one class per character. That's what separates this game and FFXI from WoW and the others. You can have multiple classes/jobs just with one character, and there is more content to customize your character with. That's the beauty of our games compared to the others. I would never go to any other online game because of what FFXIV and FFXI offer.

We all have the ability to play only one job. If you so dislike being able to play more than one, you do not have to.
I do not personally feel that it makes any sense to be locked into one job, especially when the world is based on learning abilities, and not inherent abilities. Miqote are not racially excluded from being Thaumaturges, and Monk is not Highlander Hyur specific. We also do not have racial or class enemies.

To me, it is like being able to: Fight in a war, write a sonnet, split wood, dig a hole, splint a broken leg, appreciate art, have an intimate conversation, discipline a child, drive a car, solve mathematical problems, cultivate plants and exercise animal husbandry. and to do all of them , or at least most of them well.

I do not want to live life being only able to do one thing, it sure would have sucked if i had chosen "Line-o-type operator" as a career and not been able to change.

Being able to have multiple class/jobs on one character is what gives the game longevity and helps it stand out from most other games. You invest more time in your character and become more attached to it as a result. Some people have also commented that this gives rise to better community behaviour as one has a reputation to uphold. Oh the irony.

One of the biggest advantages of being able to play as multiple jobs on a single character is that a player is encourage by the game to play one character. They are encouraged by the game to be a character in the game world and not merely a role. It's a key immersion point. This in turn strengthens the attachment to your character and feeling of familiarity in the game's world and community as others do the same and you see familiar faces when you log in. Additionally, the time investment that goes into a character with multiple jobs leveled can serve as an motivation to keep one's reputation good, which is good for the community. People will know you by name, and you can build up trust and relationships based on WHO you are not WHAT you are.

Most FF games have always been about the characters first and how they can adapt to a situation (via jobs or other gameplay mechanics) to overcome challenges.

Multiple jobs is the way to go, no question. It is one of the selling points to the FF series.

That being said, for personal preference, there are times where I wish FF was a single class system. I am one of those people who really stick to one job, and don't really like to play much else often. In FF where you have the ability to have multiple jobs leveled, people will always gravitate towards class stacking and such, and it tends to force people into roles that they would not want to play. Even if I were to want to play Job X, but a fight was easier to win with Job A B and C, people will expect you to have Job A B or C leveled to do that fight because it is more convenient/efficient. I'm not saying all the time, but the majority of the time that is the case. It's annoying, and maybe ARR will do something to fix that problem, but that really is the main problem with the multiple job system that I can see anyway.

I'm not sure if being limited to one class would solve that. Probably it would just mean that if you are not the desired job, you get left out completely and just sit in town waiting for something to do.

Its also much too late for SE to concider 1 job per character. They would have effectively wasted a lot of peoples time spent leveling everything. I wouldn't have cared which way they went if they did it from the beginning, but its not going to change now.

I think this is a terrible idea and I think you should go play a different game where you can be bland and have 1 job, and all the rest of the global standards you want.

I think there's every other MMO out there that people could play if they wanted to be locked into one role at a time. The FF MMOs' appeal to me was the fact that you can do everything on one character.

If I could dislike the first post I would. One of the best things about FF MMOs is that you don't have to switch characters to switch jobs/classes.

It wouldn't solve it completely, you are right, but it there would content creators would probably be way more inclined to create job balance, so jobs would not get excluded, and the general population would probably try out different combinations for the sheer fact that it would be way harder to put together the "ideal" setup. Again, I support having multiple jobs, but it does create a situation where people will be more inclined to go with the ideal route because it is a lot easier to put together the ideal setup when everyone has every job leveled. Not that doing something with the route of least resistance is bad or anything, it's just that if you want to play a particular job, and it doesn't fit in line with that mentality, tough luck. Hopefully I'm explaining myself well enough, lack of sleep, brain dieing~.

I can see your point about single jobs. And I'm pretty sure you know the myriad of reasons why it doesn't work too well in mmorpg's so I'll skip that. The point I wanted to make is, you think Vivi when you think of blm because he was a blm. You think Tifa when you think mnk because tifa was a monk. Let me ask this question. Who do you think of when you think Dragoon? Kain? Why not Cid Highwind? Or Mog from FF6/3 (yes, mog danced but he was the only character to start with a polearm in ff6/3)? Or Ward from FF8? I think the association is kind of reversed here. FF6/3 was a game where most of the characters didn't have set jobs (short of gogo, gau and umaro). Locke was a thief and Blitz was a mnk, but we don't really think of them as such. Even in FF7, anyone could steal, anyone can cast whm/blm/smn/blue/etc magic. But Vivi and Tifa didn't stick in our minds because they are a said job. They stuck in our minds because of who they are. Like Kain. A lot of people want to be dragoon to be like Kain. Not be like Kain and hence a dragoon. And, I personally, think that above it all, that's the most import thing. Not the job you, I, or they are, but the person we all are.

And yeah, a small part of me kind of wishes that you can only level one job. It would make people focus on being great at one thing rather than picking up a job and dropping it like one would with gum. But in the end, what's at fault isn't the system. It's not the system that made people treat jobs this way, it's the way we play and the way people treat the game. Like with To Kill A Raven. Guides and people kept telling me that you NEED blms for the meteors. Nothing else works. Well, our archer/bard was 1 shotting meteors. If we treat this game more like an exploration and less like "get ALL OF THE ACHIEVEMENTS!", we'll get more of what you talked about and less of this throw-away mentality.

I disagree. Final Fantasy has a tradition of characters being able to freely change classes as needed (III, V, XI, XIII). Even in some non-numbered FF games, like X-2, 4 Warriors of Light on DS and FF Dimensions on Android/iOS (which is awesome, by the way).

The battle system in VI and IX is very flexable and regardless of the weapon you can form the character to any job you wish. Same with VII, Its more about the visual and when you break it down everyone is some form of hybrid DD/mage. FF games with more set characters shouldnt be fit into jobs, you can make connections but thats where it ends.

Well actually...pretty much every FF game that didn't have a job system or something similar, like the sphere grid or license board, the characters pretty much had a set role. Cecil was a physical powerhouse with good defense and some white magic. Rosa was a white magic user that could use a bow and arrows or staves. The list goes on. You can fit each character from those games into a specific role even though they had multiple angles to them. Like, you're not going to use Cecil as your main healer, even though he has white magic, because Cure 2 just isn't powerful enough.

My take on this is the FF MMOs wanted to use the job system featured in many of its games so that people could experience every role on one character. If they wanted you to only be a Warrior or a Thief for the entirety of the game, it would have originally been designed that way. And I'm sure many people still would have played it, but this was one of the unique things FF brought to the genre.

Going to have to say no to this. I enjoy using 1 character for everything rather then 10+. I more then likely wont play all classes on ARR but if I get bored I know I still have a few classes/jobs I can level without having to logout and create a new character then spend 15+ minutes figuring out a new name. Also the sound of going through the same quests/story just does not appeal to me I wish all MMO's would allow using 1 character to level everything.

I enjoy switching classes in FFXI and FFXIV and it should not be taken out and I will give you a good example of why not with a real life situation. You go to school for 6 years to become a Computer technician and you decide that you do not want to be a computer technician 1 year after your 6 years of school and decided to be an english professor. Well, now you have to go through 6 more years of school. I am not sure about you, but i would not want to go through all the low level courses again. Just imagine that times 15 now.

Now this would not take as long but the concept is the same. The way they have it setup is perfectly fine and really enjoyable as you would just need to level up the class and I think you would also have to do some quests related to the class. If you really enjoy that model though, you could do it that way. No one is saying that you have to level up all the classes on your one character. You can get away with just leveling up one class and then make a new character. Although the way they are doing it, you may not have all the useful skills/spells needed for the class to be super successful, just successful.

So besides what I'm seeing commonly cited as reasons to have one character instead of alts, I'd like to also contribute to the reputation argument. In most MMOs you can create alts, and its extremely easy to level up to cap. In FFXI the idea of leveling another character to cap was almost unthinkable because it took most people close to a year (or longer) to hit cap on their first job. (The fact that in FFXIV it's really easy to level is a problem in and of itself that should be addressed.)

As a result of it being so difficult to level and get through all of the quests (khazam keys, airship passes, limit breaks, AF etc) you needed to do before you ever got to 75, you had to rely on other people's help to get there. You couldn't be an ass to anyone because otherwise you'd just get no where. Because almost everyone just had one character, you couldn't be an ass on one character and then get help on another. Reputations were long lasting things in FFXI, and news of asshattery traveled fast on a server. It was a great way to ensure people didn't succomb to the lure of internet anonymity and do whatever they want because there were no consequences. In FFXI there were long lasting consequences, and thats why I prefer the FF MMO community. Its inherent in the single character paradigm. People get more attached to their single character and are also much less likely to jeopardize their community reputation with it. In short, it helps keep good people good, even when its a bad day.

I totally think of Sabin when it comes to Monk.. Tifa makes me think of something else entirely, but let's not go there

Personaly, that was something i hated about WoW. Having to create a whole new chr just to experience another job? Even if they made it so i had to go to a specific person to change my job, i would be ok with that. Just dont lock us into our job/class. I would rather give people more options instead of take them away.

Your appeal to tradition fails to account for FF3,11,12,13, and all the tactic's games just off the top of my head. This is one of the things that sets XI and XIV apart from all the other games. I don't even comprehend how or why you would want to level tons of characters just to try out different jobs. I don't know what's to come for XIV, but when I think about the content you have to clear in XI, from fame, to CoP, to city rank, my god....

Remember finally beating that really hard quest? Or finishing that expansion? Well, imagine doing that over and over and over and over and over again for each and every character?

If there's a quest chain that takes me 2 weeks to finally get through, I wouldn't be too keen on doing that all over again when I wanna play another job.

That's not to say I won't help people do the quest when I'm done, but starting over again for each character? yeah...no.

No. Just no. Multiple jobs are a must. I don't wanna have to keep making new characters for each job. When people can only pick one job, you tend to have a surplus of one job and not enough of another, making forming a decent party extremely difficult.

I totally agree! That is one things that i think has led to the fear of "quest grinding" Its bad enough there are some cookie cutter quests but when you have to go through all the cookie cutters each and every time you want to try a new job/class, its no wonder people get exasperated with them. Probably also the reason people don't bother to even read the quests or involve themselves with the lore.

I prefer the having 1 character playing 1 class but I doubt SE will change anything at this point.

Honestly the whole one job to character is the biggest thing that makes me pick up these MMO's like TERA, WOW, GW2, Diablo III and only play for a week or so with no real ommph. Im always logging off to look at my character list and go "....... what the hell am I gonna play..." then I stand around do nothing... eventually pick a character and then reconsider remaking a different DPS and do nothing again.

In a way, I literally -hate- that system and it brings me no close feelings to my surroundings, or guilds. If anything because you can only have 1 alt in a guild/linkshell in these games I am completely uncommitted to any of them. I see them -if- I log on that particular character or I don't see them, nor do I tend to tell them my alts because they are usually in some other "potentially good guild" that if known would cause conflict, but in my case is just me trying to find a place that feels like home. When im constantly changing characters, I don't feel any sense of home and burn out in less then a month.

To top that off though in XI and XIV leveling my jobs was technically the same things, leves or choose from 3-4 different grind spots(my favorite way) the whole repeat the questline and zone change to each character to lv20 to decide which one I like the most felt so much more.. repetitive.. Not sure why, but it really did. By my third character hitting the third zone I was so turned off bothering to try, I usually found myself alt tabbing and forumsing somewhere for a hour instead.

One character to rule them all FF style was a godsend to me in the MMO market, and I thank them almost every time I log on for that fact.

Exactly - being able to change your Job/class in FFXI and XIV is rather unique amongst MMOs, and is indeed a breath of fresh air from all the others which just channel Gary Gygax and lock you in one class/role for the entire game.

Having said that though, it's probably the reason why most MMOs which still use subscriptions only have you pay a flat monthly fee and then allow you to create as many characters as you like without extra charges, unlike as FFXI and XIV each extra character is an additional fee - it's to compensate for being locked into a class for the whole game.

In any event, I loved the Job system in the earlier FF titles (my favourite application of it was Tactics <3) and in fact, the Job system was the very reason I first started playing FFXI in the first place all those years ago. I admit though I was a little disappointed when information about the Armoury System was first announced before FFXIV 1.0 was released by not using traditional FF Jobs, but just new generic 'classes', but it has grown on me a lot (<3 GLA), and much later I squeed when I read about Jobs being added too. :)

So yeah, I'm glad FFXI and XIV have changeable Jobs/classes, and would not want SE to change it for anything. :D

Simplest and easiest answer, money.

A lot of MMOs charge for extra characters. Some give you 3 free slots or so, but you have to purchase additional character creation rights and pay for it monthly. FFXI is a prime example of this, albeit you were not hindered on jobs, more on storage.. I believe Ragnarok Online as P2P only had 3 slots as well, but could purchase additional slots up to 6? It's been a long time, Thief->Assassin was most popular then. It was before they added a lot of other classes.

At any rate, if you're like me and play a majority of the jobs just so you have at least basic skills with the class, then you should be able to see how much extra money you would spend just to level an extra job or two, let alone another 15. ARR is kind of exempt from this in a way. Youll understand if you review ARR service fees posted a while back during the legacy campaign posts.

so let's calculate that.

12.95 basic service fee (includes 1 char)
1.00 Additional Char slots (max 32 slots, including the one with your basic service fee)

so, lets say we have 28 different jobs (not counting crafts).

that's $27 extra a month just for characters, if you play all jobs. Thats $324 dollars a year you're paying, just to use every job that is in the game to begin with.

With ARR almost exempt from this, we can still look at money sadly.

If they locked each character to 1 job (or class with underlying jobs as seen in FFXIV(Gladiator -> Paladin)), this would mean you'd be forced to purchase the more expensive option to have all 8 character slots per world, just to check out a job and decide if you like it. Not very rational. Now think about that. 8 slots per world. As crafting classes are considered to be main classes in FFXIV (atleast in 1.0 they were), this would mean you still wouldn't be able to play all the jobs available. And should they increase the number the of character slots we have, we'll be back to square one, paying for extra slots.

It reduces the consumers hemorrhaging of money on the game itself after monthly fees, making it a much more plausible to harness long time subscribers.

Of course, this is just my opinion but, facts are in there as well. It's just a matter of perception.
