I wouldn't mind be able to recruit a dragon (or a drake) as a mount/buddy. I don't think there is any real reason to limit the "buddy system" strictly to chocobos.
I am against the idea of dragoons being defined as "the one with the dragon pet."

NO
WYVERNS
ALLOWED
(sig relevant)
Edit: Oh, wait, derp me. I thought this was the old thread in the Lancer forums :(
Oh well, joke's on me, I guess
Willing to bet that wyverns would make DRG horribly OP.
Don't expect to see many of XI's mechanics in 2.0, they'd kill game balance.
unless they make another mountain deist wyvern in ff14, i don't see a strong melee DD job degrading into a pet job anytime soon. however in other games, the characters with the dragoon essence in them didn't have a pet. for example we have ff7 cid highwind with dragon dive for example. I perfer keeping the dragoon essence in them that way, thats just my preference.
edit: I'm not saying pet jobs are inferior. its just that drg is strong as is, and this will likely result in re-balancing their stats.
I don't get why if you summon the wyvern your attack power gets halfed, and the othe r half goes to the wyvern.
If you don't summon it you keep your attack damage up.
This way you can have a pet if you want, or you just don't have to summon it.
I'm amazed how angry ppl get at the mere suggestion of a pet dragon for DRG, especially with so much of the FFXI community playing this game. I personally don't care since I've never played as DRG.
If I was to be passionate for a class, it'd be a Mog Knight class with a Moogle pet/buddy.
Having a little wyvern made DRG my favorite class in FFXI. I would love to see DRG have a pet no matter how they would implement it. In general I think pet classes are the most interesting to play so I hope we get several later on to go with SMN.
While I know this is a troll thread, I can't help but weigh in on this subject because it is so near and dear to my heart.
Just to preface... I LOVE dragoon. I really do.
That being said, while the wyvern in XI was nice, I would much rather dragoon in XIV be allowed to shine as a fierce front line combatant. Welcome in parties, and deadly as hell.
Pet classes work when we look at classes like summoner because we expect that the summoner isn't going to hit like a mack truck. That's what the pets are for.
I don't want to see dragoon have the strength of a summoner, but with a pet SE would have no choice but to do something very near that to maintain class balance.
It's cool to think back fondly about the wyvern in XI. It was cute and I liked it.
But in XIV, I want to be an Azure Dragoon, destroyer of dragons. I want to be strong, feared, and formidable.
Lol, they ridiculed the Drg job in FFxi by giving it a pet just because the name Dragoon. It was a gimmick and a excuse that they got away with due to the special circumstances & lore. Grow up playas and stay true to real FF tradition. Dragoons look like dragons to fool their prey/enemies, then strike!
Better than a dragon, we have our chocobo. Maybe if someone would design a dragoon outfit for the fellah, since he will be fighting alongside us. Hehe.
They could just have a wyvern pop up for dragoons buff animations, a graphic enhancement rather than something affecting the players stats.
thats the most terrible thing i can think of.. a choco fighting alongside with you.
i mean, will everybody use it then? do we have 8 people and 8 chocobos alongside?
besides that i think it just do not look "right"... if there is a new job/class which is called chobobo-knight or something... i may be ok with it... but not more than "Ok". i think a huge chocobo is just disturbing in a fight.
limit-break for dragoon ;XD a wyvern coming from the sky to breath attack the foe ;D
I'd feel better about a chocobo buddy, if I had raised it myself, not some extremely rude chocobo trainer.
Se could just write it that Dragoons can exert their will over a lesser dragon in the same way dragons can over humans. Personally though i would rather a dragoon along the lines of freya more so than anything else using the spirits of the dragons you kill to perform powerful attacks buffs etc.
This is a duplicate thread, of one in the Dragoon forums.
Not to mention this thread belongs in the dragoon forums.
There you can see that the overwhelming consensus is that dragoons do not want to be tied to a pet.
I offered a compromise that perhaps the same system used for Chocobos could be used for Wyverns. But in no way should it be tied directly to the balancing of Dragoon as a stand alone job.
At all.
As far as those who say dragoon fighting along side Wyverns is lore-breaking. I'd ask if you payed attention to the text at the end of the final Dragoon Quest: Dragoons and Dragons did not seem to always be at odds, if we take what was inferred by the quest giver.
If it's part of the mount system, I don't care, as I'll likely opt out of a Wyvern for a Magitek Armor anyways. But I don't want it tied to my job.
I'm still at work at leveling my dragoon and even if it's true, it's up to the discretion of the dragoon who wishes to grow stronger. Why do you think I want to wear the dragoon armor?
I wouldn't wear the dragon scales and head because I like them. I wear it as a trophy. I wear it to deceive the enemy and slay dragons. For all that I know, dragons/ drakes will eat anyone once they're smelling range.
Its nice to see that most people here have the good sense to reject the DRG-as-pet-job. Wyverns made DRG a terrible DD in FFXI and they would ruin the job in FFXIV.
However..
I am very much in favor of utilizing the spirit/power of dragons (sparingly) for higher level WS attacks (see Freya from FFIX)
Wow it's like I'm really in October 2011!
That line of logic is irrelevant to the lore of the game or even in the context of Final Fantasy. That's merely your particular headcannon for a reason that isn't given officially by the lore.
That's like saying Moogles have bonbons on top of their heads to magically detect kuponuts. It's just not there officially.
Oh dear... Lets please not start this again.... :(
Do I want to give up even an ounce of my power as a dragoon to have a flying gimmick follow me around?
Hell no.
It was a balancing nightmare in xi for the longest time to split the DD potiential of the pet and master.
You make the pet strong enough to balance out the drg's power against bosses and it becomes too op against normal fodder. You make the pet balanced for normal mobs and the drg has to be a weaker DD against bosses due to the weaker pet. Not to mention if the damn thing dies you lose a chunk of damage. If they solve that by making the wyvern unkillable or unable to get hate, you could just kite and kill things by sending the pet after something and running around.
I've played as a drg since 04' in xi. I respect the whole nostalgic view on it, but I want the option to play a different style by having the dragon's power come from within the dragoon.
this discussion atm is pointless why because it has already been discussed
http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...%21-%28poll%29
I don't think it would be beneficial to the class in the long run. something FFXI struggled with was balancing between the two. It's not necessary for Dragoon to have a pet/minion. Kain didn't, Freya didn't, why do dragoons feel the need to have them now just because they were in FFXI, a world completely different outside of racial similarities?
Not interested.
No thanks. aside from the lore problems drg shouldnt be pet based, itll just reduce their personal dmg to make up for what the wyvern is doing(something i didnt like in ffxi).
I would like it but it does not make sense with the current job storyline sadly.
Not if they make other job that lancer is link with that use a wyvern as a pet.
[Thanks for the offer but i'll have to pass]
No. Dragoons never was supposed to have a pet in all their appearances outside of XI, just like Red Mage was supposed to be a true jack-of-all-trades instead of the support niche it was stuck in.
this was already brought up in a players poll, and my answer is still no.
Dragoon seems naked to me withotu one, but I don't have a full dragoon in XIV. as long as its balanced and not OP.
Summon wyvern would be awesome instead of the lack luster dragonfire dive, and it needn't warrant a rebalance. Instead of being like summoner's pet, it could be like a temporary summon that comes out and does a few breath attacks while you ws then disappears.
