I wish people would stop with this mentality, honestly. Anyone CAN do savage raids. It's all about memorization. Savage raid mechanics are not really any harder than the normal counterparts. Meanwhile, I've had the Expert queue dump me into Strayborough where other players immediately leave after loading in. Quite frankly, I don't blame them. I don't find the dungeon too difficult, that's not the proper word for it. Tedious would be a far better way to explain how I feel about it, particularly the first boss and to a lesser extent the second.

Are the encounters more difficult? Sure. Are they too difficult? No. But there's a difference between Tender Valley which is difficult but fair once you know the mechanics, and Strayborough where even once you know the mechanics they just feel annoying and unfun to deal with. At least that's my opinion anyways.

I don't mind encounters that are more challenging than the norm, but I don't want to deal with encounter design that feels obnoxious.

I'll agree that I don't find Strayborough very fun as a dungeon, but the whole aesthetic doesn't really appeal to me, either. I don't have any issues with the 2nd boss at all, though.

Wether I'm a better player or not or whether classic wow was 'easy' by modern standards makes absolutely no difference. What matters is relative challenge and for me the conent at the time was challenging. You should get out of the habit of projecting your subjective opinions onto others subjective opinions. It just makes you come off as arrogant. All you've basically said is 'my opinion is better than your opinion.' My experience is my experience and the relative difficulty of the content to my experience doesn't make a difference. Neither does it make a difference what bleeding edge players managed to achieve. Because people were still struggling to clear scholomance and ubrs and all that. And I was part of that morass for a long time before I found a good group of people to start raiding with. I felt as though rewards were earned. And victory was satisfying.

That isn't a feeling ff14 gave me till Endwalker and Dawntrail is more so. But neither does the difficulty stop me from completing the content so I'd say it's about right.

Yeahhh .. Honestly with my current reflexes I'd really struggle. And I don't want to struggle to that degree. Sorry but not everyone's interested in that kind of gameplay. I mean could I do savage raids if I really pushed myself? Sure .. Am I interested in such make or break gameplay when I'm already struggling not to get stacks on Dawntrail normal .. hell no. To be clear when I say I'll never be good enough for savage. It's not really a complaint. It's a choice.

I can still clear normals so it's all good. I don't care about having the best gear or having the bragging rights of clearing the best content. And I'm having fun where I am, Got nothing to prove to anyone so why should I do something I dislike when the normal conent is just fine for me?

Not everyone can memorize things as easily as others.

Not everyone has quick reaction times.

Not everyone can stay calm and focused under what they consider to be stressful situations.

Not everyone is good at multitasking (ie keeping up their rotations at the same time they also need to focus on dodging mechanics).

And you know what? It's okay to accept that some content may be outside of one's personal abilities. I would have had no problems doing Savage a decade ago. There's no way I would get through current Savage today.

But I would encourage players to find a group of like-minded players to at least give it a try. Sometimes we're capable of more than we think if we really want it bad enough. There is nothing wrong with failure. It is how we learn. If you keep learning more as you fail, there's a good chance you'll eventually succeed. That's how world first teams get to where they are. They learn from their failures instead of giving up.

le /sigh.... it's almost like you didn't actually read my comment and stopped at that sentence.... Savage raiding does not require faster reflexes than normal raids or really any other content. Yes, it DOES require an unfettered memory, but that's really it. The meat and potatoes of savage raiding for the typical savage raider is repetition. You beat your head against the wall until the fight is ingrained in your muscles. The misconception that people have about savage raiding requiring faster reactions than other raiding comes from two places: 1: Just a typical misconception about higher difficulty in this game altogether, and 2: Players relying on reactions to telegraphs rather than players learning fights. You cannot do savage raiding if you intend to react to telegraphs. You HAVE to learn the fights. The contrast with normal raiding is that you can skirt by with NOT knowing the fight most of the time and survive by reactions.

Also, You and the one I responded to initially seem to have completely misunderstood my point. It's absolutely fine if savage raiding is not someone's cup of tea. If you don't enjoy it, then by all means, skip it. There's no point in doing something you don't enjoy in a game. My point was: If you thought you MIGHT want to do savage, and you think you CAN'T.... you're wrong. You can. As long as you can remember the fight choreography, you can clear savage. The only situation where someone can legitimately say they CAN'T do it... is when there are memory deficiencies. Reflexes and reaction times have nothing to do with savage raiding at all. This also brings up why I like the paradigm shift we saw with normal level content in Dawntrail. Savage often times requires paying attention to the bosses and the surroundings to discern the mechanics. Normal content rarely ever did. Dawntrail shifted that paradigm and requires the player pay attention in normal content.

That said there are a lot of people in party finder gated at M2S that I don't believe will be overcoming it until they obtain better gear and are then able to do enough damage to clear while making mistakes that heal the boss. There are also a good number of people in M3S that are mechanically pretty sound, able to make it all the way to enrage somewhat consistently, but lack the knowledge or consistency to keep their rotation clean going throughout the fight.

Savage is quite difficult compared to normal content. You need a good amount of patience, a willingness to learn, and the ability to bounce back from failure. Even though Dawntrail has more people playing Savage than ever before, it is still an extreme minority of the people who play FFXIV.

Threads here on the forums have been pointing to a perceived increase in difficulty in normal content like the dungeons, if these people feel like the level 100 MSQ dungeon is too frustrating to do multiple times, I don't think they would want to do Savage.

I don't disagree with any part of this at all. Anyone CAN, but not everyone will do it successfully. As you said, it comes down to patience and willingness to learn. If you're not getting mechanics, keep doing reps and you're going to get it eventually. If you're hitting enrage, then practice your rotation. Eventually a combination of both will click.

*Edit* I do want to stress, though, that as I said before, while savage IS more difficult to clear, it's not because the execution of the mechanics is any more difficult. It's a combination of less obvious telegraphs and less forgiving punishment.

Now you're being pedantic if all you mean by anyone can savage raid is that we can make it to the point we're standing in front of the boss then you're absolutely correct. This entire discussion is predicated on the idea that doing a savage raid means clearing it.

A clear's a clear. Who cares what color your parse is? Enjoy your loot. I'm 3 clears on M1 and 2 on M2 and I have gotten exactly 1 drop thus far (not including the pitty prize books.)

Did....... did you even read what I typed? I'm gonna say you stopped after "but not everyone will do it successfully.".... If you had read one sentence further, you'd have seen that the only real thing standing in anyone's way is their own impatience or unwillingness to learn and struggle through it......

I mean, outside of Gordias at release haven’t the savage raids always been designed in such a way that success has never about some inherent skill the player has, it’s about commitment and willingness to learn the content? Hence why it’s generally all fairly predictable / standardised mechanic markers / etc? Basically you just need to be willing to put in the time, rather than being expected to play at a nigh-unattainable high level.

Would it really be so bad if dungeon content and/or normals had a similar philosophy? One where dying/wiping is an actual possibility but from those deaths you learn something that helps you progress further?

Better than ‘everyone dies, tank lives because invuln, tank solo’s fight, dead party members learns nothing and will probably keep dying in future.

Hell I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s players out there who just say ‘screw it’ and kill themselves to force the tank to solo a boss then they can afk for a bit lol. For some reason the tanks will never just take the L either - even if it’s literally inevitable lol (i.e certain stack markers)

Basically, yeah.... and that's the stance that many of us are saying. It's ok to wipe on dungeon content.... just learn and do better.

Do you play on console or computer? because there's a glaring difference if you can't even react to what's happening on the screen. PC players clearly get special treatment don't even act like they don't.

As someone who’s played exclusively on console (hell I even suffered through ps3 ARR lol), I can’t say I understand this tbh. I haven’t experienced any moments where it’s like ‘there’s literally so much happening I cannot see at all’. And my TV is like 12 years old by this time (the consoles changes, the tv did not lol). I mean, don’t PC players just see the exact same thing anyway? I wouldn’t think higher resolutions are going to make the mechanics any more/less obvious.

Isn’t that to do with how FFXIV’s battle system works though? You’re not supposed to react to a mechanic the moment it happens, you’re supposed to anticipate it coming on the fixed combat timeline every enemy/boss has and adjust accordingly. This is true regardless of which platform you’re playing on.

Like predicting the path those head things in Strayborough’s first boss are going before they move, because they always do so in a predictable fashion (straight line across). Watching where the teacups on second boss move to while they’re moving, not waiting until they stop to figure out the ‘safe space’.
Naturally, it takes time for players to work these things out, hence my point about FFXIV in general being about rewarding perseverance and/or time investment and not inherent skill on the player’s part.
While it’s generally been less apparent in recent-but-previous expansions (looking at you Endwalker), this has always been how they approach dungeon mechanics. ‘Anticipate it and adjust accordingly, don’t play reactively’. Man this 1080p 31.5" monitor is sure cutting edge technology. TVs surely can't compete with that in resolution or size. /s

I once gave advice to someone in an old static: "Stop focusing on irrelevant information." Last boss of the 100 MSQ is a prime example. First two attacks, literally a half room cleave. If you get hit the first time then you should know how it works. It even has VOICE LINES tipping you off and moving the weapon. The game makes usage of animation tells (and in this case voice lines with text) to show you what happened and how.

Sorry for late reply thanks. Im currently learning M3s and i would encourage allot of ppl to try savage. Its good and it teach u more about ur class. Heck when I dungeon pull now getting boss hp to 50% is breeze.

There are dungeons raids and trials that have fair share of tricky mechanics. Take queens eternal protocol phase, or the Vanguard second boss attacks that can get chaotic, no one saying normal mode is savage difficult. But the difficulty in normal is good and healthy, just savage is whole nother beast. Hell I would joke to say sometimes the ex and savage versions are easier than the normal fights.

Its good that this is happening dont need endwalker dungeon 2.0. Split second thing is awesome. Thanks to that I've made split second movements that saved me on savage. Especially on Honey B lovely savage for splash and drop

Name one instance where literally ANY of those mechanics require a faster response time or a more demanding execution than normal outside of stacking of multiple mechanics.... I'm not saying that there aren't new mechanics in savage vs other content. I'm saying that the DEMAND that savage mechanics place on the player really isn't any different. Once you know the mechanics, the reaction time required to execute those mechanics is roughly the same as the reaction time required to execute normal mechanics... this... is undeniably true.... Heck.. every instance of limit cuts in savage gives you almost 10 seconds at minimum to position yourself and ample time to maneuver mid-mechanic if your strat requires swapping.... Execution difficulty isn't based on whether the mechanics show up, if they're avoidable, or if they are telegraphed. Execution difficulty is 100% based on "What is expected of me to successfully execute this mechanic?"

Cool just came here to give out my input just to be gaslight I don't like that the difficulty is bad. I hate this expansion wasn't given anytime to learn anything because of speed running. I don't even want to touch the new content because I just get harassed for anything I do. You're making a claim that is simply false. No mechanic in the game requires split second reactions, whether ultimate, savage, or normal difficulty. Hyperbole is never going to result in a favorable response. If you're having to react to a split-second telegraph, then you simply are not paying attention to the boss or your surroundings. As someone who has had to get law enforcement involved for someone stalking them, your hyperbolic statements about stalking are neither funny nor appropriate. Regardless of how you FEEL about "your experience", it is factually incorrect. The problem is not with the game, the difficulty, or the mechanics. The problem is with you. You didn't pay attention, you missed the actual telegraph, and the ground marker for that mechanic was never intended to be the telegraph. This is the case with many mechanics in dawntrail. I mean i find savage version of honey b lovely to actually be easier than the normal version way more fun. Item sync duh anyone would agree but i never said item unsync meaning ur cherry picking to make ur less than successful point important. Normal content in DT is overall easy. Yet take zoraal ja ex vs his normal fight. His EX is way easier than normal fight and way better.

Is easier than the version that has none of that but has slightly more line stack aoes and an IL sync of 12 above the IL it's balanced to, except because of the fact that you don't have access to the lv99 armor until after already clearing this and most people don't stay up to date on their gear while doing the msq/levelling so you often end up with people who are still in full IL660 gear.

This is a pretty good example of where I believe you're misunderstanding my point I made earlier. Those mechanics you listed off. Individually they are by no means any more difficult to execute than any of the normal mechanics. Also, iLVL is a moot point, as the fights are all totally clearable on minimum iLVL. The speed at which you clear has no bearing on how easy it is to resolve mechanics. My statement earlier wasn't that the FIGHTS when taken as a whole aren't harder than their normal counterparts, but the individual mechanics don't ask anything more of players than any normal mechanics. This is the indisputable fact. You aren't expected to react faster or do anything special for savage/ex mechanics. You just may have a harder time learning them due to less obvious telegraphs, and multiple of those mechanics may be stacked on top of one another. This is the reason why players often find the savage versions of fights easier than their normal counterparts after progging. You become intimately familiar with the particular dance in savage, and it's arguable that the savage version of fights is more strictly scripted than the normal version. Once you learn the savage mechanics, since they're not any more demanding to actually execute, the hard part is over and the fight becomes trivial. Take Eden 10, for example. While progging took my static a while, once we progged it, I quickly got to a point where I wouldn't fail a single mechanic. Put me in normal, however, and I die repeatedly. This is partly because I was expecting savage mechanics and the normal behaved slightly differently, but still, the savage became easier to me after I progged. That doesn't mean the fight itself is easier, but it's perceived easier.

I think they realise they got caught out. Alexandria Boss 1, for example, isn't split second reactions. It sets out the naughts and crosses way ahead of time and you can see what order they're gonna do. You have quite a bit of time to look at it and go "okay dodge, in, dodge, in". Then after its tutorialed you it adds in the front cleave or rear cleave attack to the mix and it still gives you a couple of seconds to figure that out.

Is it a bit more complex than normal? Yeah, sure, why not. Does it give you more than a split second to react? Hell yeah it does. Gives you loads of time. The level 100 Dungeons are only hard if you've spent the entire game relying on the orange no-no zones instead of looking at the animation telegraphs or unique attributes of certain attacks. Like circular sfx are generally going to be a donut and crosses are going to be explosions. You can never be hit by certain mobs, like the early games Cyclops, purely by looking at its animations rather than attack names.

Heal checks are just that... Heal checks... But in regards to savage, during relevancy, capped iLVL really isn't any easier on heal checks than minimum iLVL. And again, keep in mind I'm talking about individual mechanics. The individual mechanics are not any harder to resolve than the normal counterparts. The difficulty comes from learning the mechanics and proper disbursement of mitigations. Both of those are irrelevant in a conversation about reflexes and reaction times.
