If they can recreate the entire world, game engine, the game itself, surely we can change our names too
As for bad players getting a second chance, you must realize the GMs know if a person has changed their name, and that's what matters
ok, let me try again
we are role playing
what does we role play as?
we role play as an adventurer in a medieval setting
do we have a suitable environment for that?
we have castle, busy business city, lively port city, and god-forsaken town in a middle of a jungle. we have knight, mage, mystical creature with a bit of magi-tek blend on it
does changing your name, your gender, heck even your race is logical while role playing in this kind of setting?
I don't know, but I don't think it's possible. Currently this setting doesn't have the proper technology to do so. what do you think?
Does she comment on every thread to disagree with the person who started it?
People should be given the option especially if changing gender.
Who said all of us were role playing O_o? People want to change their names for the sake of changing their names. It's not a game breaking mechanic, it's not anything bad. People just want to change their names either because 1) They're tired of their name. 2) It won't look right if they change their gender/race. 3) They're changing it for the sake of changing it because they have the option to. Or last and foremost 4) They just want to simply change their name. I'm not saying these are facts mind you, and I'm not saying that these are what most people want, this is what I think of when I have the option to change my name or if I want to change my name
I don't see any reason why people should even argue if they can change their name or not. The argument of simply "Roleplaying" does not help either you or anyone who uses that said argument. Changing their characters name is fine if it's only for just one time, hell shouldn't hurt anyone really maybe SE because they have to go through their database to change some data.
Name change should be allowed when you start up in 2.0. Make it so #1!
I think they said back with the server merge any name changes are represented in your social / black lists. so if you blacklist sir douchebag and he changes his name to sir hidefrombadrep they'll still be in your black list.
that said changing names if changing genders seems pretty much common sense. manq'ote called "miss kitty" LOL
Guess what? This is a GAME! Give us the abilty to swap race and gender, and go ye that's alright.. but to change name!? What is this MADNESS!!! This is a fantasy game, it makes no sense to change your name!! Realy?
Look at it this way, if you can't see a reason ingame lorewise to it. We always where, the new race/gender with the new name before 2.0. The only one who notices it is the players, who also notice the WORLD CHANGING!!! Realy now is it that hard or disagreeable for a name change?
"does changing your name, your gender, heck even your race is logical while role playing in this kind of setting?"
Questioning Logic in a fantasy game is Ilogical!
I want a name change with gender change, not havin Mancat called Zaria Faye. And Tell me to re roll? And then whats the point of playing now? Whats the point of working on this character, if im to just make a new one?
The opinions/wants/needs of the many outweigh the opinions/wants/needs of the few in this case name changing doesn't do anything wrong to the game. It just changing names
Even though what im about to say may be un-popular to the 3% of the FFXIV population (the people who post on the forums).. I feel that Name change is a bad idea. With the mail system and ability to make multiple characters for cheap (especially if in legacy campaign) there is no excuse for someone to re-roll a character and be back to where they were in a fraction of the time of their original character. Identity is something that is earned in an MMO community not replaced.
Going to have to disagree. Reputations are pretty transient, even in an MMO. I have been playing XI since it hit NA and I don't remember ever hearing about other players outside of my LS or statics for any length of time. Even 4 months dow nthe line most people seemed to forget who did what when, unless it was just that horrible. Honestly, this isn't big issue. Let people do the one time name change, it won't effect anything.
People usually lumped people together based on LS on XI anyway, didn't really matter what your name was unless you were a total jerk/really noisy/outspoken. Only thing different are the RMTs with the same name structure like the Binfens from olde midgard. Everyone knew back then who the RMTs were.
They could just add a field to Lodestone that states what their previous names were like:
Previously Known As: _______
or something. Make all the sites like XIVPads that scan lodestone able to pick it up and off you go if you care about people hiding behind new names because they have a bad rep.
I don't know if I would change my name, but I definitely would like the option available.
Let's let everyone change their names at least once if they like. Besides if one person changes his/her name because of bad reputation....he/she will just have bad reputation with his new name anyway @_@. I personally made a bad choice of a name and would like to re-correct it, it happens. I could name change in XI even for the price of a server transfer. I'm pick about names and realize I don't like certain ones after a while.
If SE allows the majority of achievements earned to be account wide then I don't see the problem with re-rolling a new character, especially if your maxed out character is sending mats, gil, and gear through the mailing system.. Will SE allow us to change race/gender/name every version update? I hope not :/
I understand your fears. You see the game crumbling around you, the immersion you worked so hard to delve into all crashing to the ground. However, there comes a time when you have to break that barrier, no matter what. This is called the metagame, and suspension of disbelief. Let me go over these in turn.
The metagame is using outer world influences to affect an inner environment. Everything from naming your character Shaq Oneal, to that awful, immersion breaking 'arrow to the knee' line in Limsa Lominsa (don't remember the NPC. I nerd raged for an hour about that.) The metagame is also used to take an outer spin on inner environments, and thusly affecting the disbelief (the point of immersion) of the world around you.
Now, there are some times you have to suspend this disbelief. It always happens when the metagame is just unavoidable. Case in point, and while we're on topic, are names. When it comes down to it, we built our characters based on aesthetics, then worked around the limitations of each race. When the Dev. Team decided to give us more options and a different look to our characters, it put an element of fairness to the game. They invoked the metagame, and we have to respond by turning the other way when it comes to lore for just a second.
Personally, I had to forgo my moniker of Wolfandre because it just wasn't a Mi'qote name. Hell, it's not even a girl name. Now that I can make a cat man, I certainly don't want him named Jivu, as even THAT would invoke a suspension of disbelief on the part of the players interacting with me. Guy with a girl name? Must be a girl. Or was a girl. Or a man-girl? Thoughts like that destroy the elements of the game just as much as the names themselves do.
So you see, in terms of the world spinning around you, you just have to look the other way for the game to march forward into greatness. And in case you're wondering, I do have my credentials on the matter. I run a theatrical role-playing game with a few friends for a group of 100+ of our peers. We have to do this stuff all the time in order to progress story lines and plot arcs. It just has to happen, and there is no way around it.
every version update? Its one update. :O Is that how achievments currently work? Both characters? If so I won't need a name change
lol.. every update? maybe for all we know ;p
It hasnt been confirmed that Achievements will be cross account.. but we do know that some.. if not most of the achievements will not exist in 2.0.
My first character in Beta was Demitrix Loinguard.. after realizing my humorous mistake.. I deleted Demitrix LOINguard and re-rolled (losing ranks and time).. People who aren't happy with their name should have deleted their character before getting R50 in every class.. This seems to me like a "I Deleted my Paragons Crown.. SE FIX IT!" type of situation :/
I'm all for allowing name change with the 2.0 recustomizations but I recognize there's difficulty involved.
My husband is a female Elezen, with a really Elezen (and really girly) sounding name currently -- he wants to switch to a Male Mi'qote in 2.0 but probably won't if he's stuck with his present name.
Obvious answer incoming. Why make a new character and lose all my level 50's when all I simply want is a name-change (only useable if you did the gender/race change). No offense but I wouldn't want a Female Miqote named Dargoth. Or if I change to a Male Miqote I may not wish to change my name but would like to have that option. How I see it is that your Surname is your identity not your first name. So it is pretty obvious upon itself why some want a name change, though I am sure some of the a-holes want one so they can wreak havoc with a new name but whatever.
There really isn't much difficulty involved overall it comes down simply to the devs decision on it. Some don't think you should be able to and as I was saying you should only be allowed to change your character first name and be forced to keep your surname.
Every time you post, a kitten dies.
Likely not, actually. Most legendary heroes have had multiple variations of their names.
Do you even know what the hell 2.0 is? If you "care" so much, let the devs decide.Quote:
ps: that's just some lazy analogy for the all pain that DEV/DB team have to endure to re-name player ID into their database. Yes, I'm lazy like that
False.
Throughout many European and middle-eastern medieval cultures and pre-medieval cultures, cross-dressing was generally treated as a stigma, and people thought it possible to be able to actually change their 'gender'/'sex' (what was their understanding of male/female) through what we know as witchcraft. In some religious institutions, you could even go to hell for changing genders. Then there's the fact that throughout the world from ancient cultures to modern-day cultures, there were and still are rumors of humans changing forms.
That's not even considering that Final Fantasy XIV is based in a high-fantasy setting with a possibly-technocratic dictatorship known as Garlemaid, the Garlean Empire, and where magic is infused. Truth is, SE could easily make gender/race changes true to lore since there is no information whatsoever on that.
Also, people do quite often change their common name, or some people like me use a different name depending on the group. For instance, in any professional/business setting I go by the name Vincent, but informally up until recently I went by the name Kyle.
/eyeroll
2.0 isn't just a mere 'version update'.
I am all for name changing. If it REALLY causes such a problem for ANYONE, then just get rid of the surname or hide it.
I know for sure my character surname is pretty long and annoying. God, do I regret linking my character name from XI.
But is it really a burden to add the option? This reminds me of that Goobue thread.
o______________________________________________________________O Goobbue
Any and all arguments against a name change option is insanely unorthodox and simply retarded; it serves as nothing more than a fine display of the individual's sociological dysfunction adherent to their cultural habitat and common practices, also being a selfish twit.
I think they should at least allow people to change their first names at 2.0 if they decide to change their gender/race. That way they'll have a new name that they feel is fit for their character, and can still be identified who they are by their last name. :) But if SE will allow for full name change go for it!
oh this thread again
http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/d...wie-is-out.jpg
you guys funny, getting flip off something like this
ok, let me get this straight
1. I'm not against change
2. I'm in no way can change SE plans to implement something, to change something
3. I'm just wondering, why would you like to change your appearance? your name? It's your identity pre 2.0, an accumulated experience for almost 2 years (since beta)! Don't you all have pride or something? Of what you are? Of what choice you choose? Of regrets that made?
4. Learn to make choice, and what most important, learn to accept that choice, for whatever regret you will have
wow you really do ignore people's answers dont you?
I've seen several replies with various reason for changing their name.
(Most that seems valid imo thou)
When some of us started 2years back there was an option to have your old FFXI server name be
connected to your ingame character name like "Bobby Sylph" (as an example) im sure these
players would really like to get rid of that surname.
Forgot what that option was called back then but i think it
was required in order to get those winged shoes or w/e.
Pride in our character names?
Oh hun..you dont know the half of it, i take pride in it allright.
And even if i change my character name i'll always be no0my in many others mind.
My "enemies"...lol or w/e i should call them.... will have to guess / think again next time
they decide to do something really...stupid.
Most of your posts are either asking the same question or you stating the same statement over and over again even though plenty of people have given you an answer.
and your number "3 & 4" doesn't that contradict on what you said about people getting a flipped out of this O_o you keep posting questions and people keep answering you O__________o what you said in this sounds the most serious out of all the posts that I have read O______O omg it's like a time loop.
Yes, I see people reply, some of them reasonable, some of the totally funny and even moronic
What I fail to see is people do not want/refuse to take consequences of the option they take
Take example, XI vet. As far as I know, SE offer, and not forcing, them to take their XI identity.
Another example is character creation. Again, SE offer them a variety of option, I even can put a tiny mole under my right eyes! Some people take this seriously, even spent hours after hours for options, but some doesnt take it seriously and ended regret it. Heck, even I regret why didnt I perform character creation on my PC, on my on monitor, instead of doing it from office PC. But what the hell, what happen is happen
Another funny example is character ID. I've seen many Rina (and all of its variant) in my server. Should I change my name just because of that? Truly funny
The only moronic posts in this thread have been by none other than yourself, you insist on continuing to ask the same damn thing claiming that it shouldn't happen despite being told and refuted every single time.
We're not talking about some simpleton MMORPG where you play multiple characters for different jobs/whatever; this is a Final Fantasy MMORPG wherein you're playing the same character on multiple jobs with multiple skills. If this were some normal MMORPG that didn't have a multi-class/job system, then there'd be no problem having to "start over" to get a character you want, but it's not like that - we're getting at least 3 new race/gender choices come 2.0 (Highlander F, Miqo'te M, and Roegadyn F), and even more customization options by then that not giving us the option to have a name change is nothing more than a slap-in-the-face to anyone currently invested into this game.Quote:

Like many people before me have mentioned - Not everyone is like you. You may not care that there are a lot of other Rinas on your server. But some people don't like to be one of many.
Personally, I doubt I'll change my name. I like my name, and I used this name for a specific reason. But, I still support it. If I were to change my character to a male (which won't happen, but lets just say it did), I wouldn't want my first name to be Lady. Eliniel is also very girly. Now, if you tell me I'm lazy for just not remaking another character in the way that I want: I've worked hard in game to get to nearly all 50s and work on my achievements. Why would I want to start all of that over when I've worked as such to make this my main? I would want my main to look how I would like it to look. Just because a male Miqo wasn't available at the time that I created my character isn't my fault.
Also, this is just a game. It's not as important as you're making it out to be. Legally, you can change your real name if you wanted to, so why not be able to do it in a game?
As for game identity, if the person is a bad person, even if their name were to be changed, they would still be bad. A name change isn't going to change their personality, and if they had a reputation for being a jerk, they'll just get a rep new for the same thing. Honestly, in the end, it will probably be easy to figure out who the changed person was in the past based on linkshell, personality, and friends. I really doubt it will be as hard as you're making it out to be. To me, personally, game identity doesn't really say much for you. You're playing with a bunch of people who you don't know and will probably never meet. Yeah, it doesn't really mean you should treat them like shit, but I don't really care if people think I'm a bitch because I'm trying to advise them on how to play their job better.
Basically what you are saying is you don't want to lose your "rep" on the server you are on. Assuming you actually had one, the only people would care is your friends anyway. And what your saying is, if you change your name then you would lose all those friends because of that name change. If they are real friends you wouldn't stop talking to them just because you changed your name.
Everyone on this thread has made a valid point as to why they would want to change their name or appearance. Stop asking.
While I'd like to see it for those people that need it, it just might not be possible given how they would have to edit data from the servers, no?
If not, people will just have to make new characters *shrugs*
