What are you talking about? The US doesn't have a Free Market. The US has pretty heavily regulated markets. It's not a Command & Control economy, but it's not a Free Market. That said: The placard clicking is terrible. I don't know why anyone would want that. It gives the illusion of agency when you really have none.

Imo, the simple solution is when they introduce new Wards to do so with some lottery and some placard (what I initially thought they were going to do) and let people do one or the other (you would be prohibited from the placard game while having an open bid so you couldn't put in a bid as "insurance" and then go placard clicking - you'd have to pick one or the other). Then we'd find out really quick which worked better and which people liked more.

People like OP aren't complaining because they can't get a house. I'm on a high pop server and there were tons of houses with 2, 1, or even 0 bids. The house I just got had 0 bids on it.

What they're complaining about is they didn't get the Large (or possibly Medium) house they wanted in the prime location where everyone else also wanted it and there was a lot of competition, and for some reason, they imagine if it was placard clicking, those same people (and more) wouldn't have just been spamming the placard and them lose it anyway. It's a person pissed that they didn't get the thing they wanted - that tons of other people also wanted - and blaming the system instead of themselves, and who want special advantages like "If I own a Small I should have a leg up over some new Sprout in the game buying that Large that I want."

Some special kind of entitlement, that.

If you have a house, be content with what you have.

If you don't, go for a Small, there are plenty up for grabs since everyone went for the Mediums and Larges.

If you aren't happy with either of those options...I'm sorry? Life sadly doesn't always give you what you want, I guess? /shrug

People don't actually want instanced server housing. Apartments were already that. People want to make houses in communal areas where they can see and be seen by others and have people over and have a larger canvas to make stuff on. Many (not all, but many) people with houses don't want them to be instanced like the Apartments. If we had Apartments where you could do all the house things (larger size, plants), people would still be upset because that isn't what people collectively want.

It's entitlement if you think you should be given things over other people just because you think you're more worth it, yes. That's quite possibly one of the better definitions for entitlement. Those other people pay their $15/month, too. Why should you get it and not them?

No, it's not entitlement for anyone who has 50m to have access to a large house.

You aren't given every job at max level, etc, but you have every opportunity to do that; it isn't the same case with this facet of the game, which you do infact pay for, and you're arguing no one should be complaining about it because they have access to smalls; which is horseshit. I'm not sure how you came to the conclusion that it was at all equivalent because in terms of what a player can do, no one can step on your shoes and stop you from getting to cap by being world first.

The previous system actually did facilitate a process of owning and upgrading a house, and you had opportunities to get one even if you didnt just "get lucky." Owning a small and then relocating opens up a small plot, the net land remains at 0. Getting a small was getting your foot in the door. It's better than lottery to some but they are both dogshit. It was also in its own way, entitlement to change it to lottery when people prepared to own larger houses by first getting smalls. Just because they changed the rules doesn't mean it was fair to them either

On the other hand, Square Enix can do nothing for you or anyone else for 15$ a month, and you'll defend them on forums from people who are dissatisfied with this absolute mess of a housing system; so I figured maybe I could get a piece of the pie and buy some eggs or something

also the funny part is you can also just buy level and quest skips from the cash shop so you can actually just brute force your way through it with money
(just like you can abuse the lottery system by bidding multiple times on one plot via FC, very gracefully crushing any personal buyers like the RMTers on dynamis)

Not for most people. It was a lucky few and an arguably MORE arbitrary method than this one - if you happened to hit the placard after the random timer for it to be on sale activated and were the first person to do it. Moreover, it was a case of "the rich get richer" as those who already had a house had an unfair advantage to get an even bigger house than people who didn't have a house had to get any house.

The prior system was both subjectively and objectively worse by almost every metric, as many people in this thread have said and you just don't want to hear because you have a delusion that if you were clicking a placard right now you'd get lucky and get what you want.

Why don't you try explaining this in a way that makes the game sound good? You included some things you can literally buy with money, and some things you can't but you can earn through persistence, which isn't the case for housing due to the fact that its a scarcity where the rarity of it is not based on how many people are trying to get it; so why are you acting like there are parallels? When I think of things that are meant to immerse me by being inconvenient I think of things like a transportation system, akin to a subway (ala fishing boat); not the prospects of house ownership in the Americas, or getting robbed at a casino.

My arguments are cynical, because I have reason to be cynical and because every expansion that has come out has produced less content and assets for the same price. I've laid my arguments out clearly, and I deny "buh servers" because it's a fucking lie. I don't have to play pretend with you, so I don't have to answer you with a reason why my made up shit is more valid than your made up shit. We've seen how IS handled instances, we've seen how it mildly strains the server at best, and we (or at least I) believe in object permanence; and that not every single person who owns a house, especially in an instance, will log in and stand inside of it for the sole purpose of setting the game on fire. Especially given the performance of the "community ghost towns" of which there are like 2-3 people in simultaneously, outdoors, if any.

i got a small house for the 1st time in 4 year with this lottery system...if it wasnt for it ,im sure i would be still hoping to one day have a place, so im happy, wish the best of luck to everyone.

I lost count of how many of these I've lost, but I still prefer having a fair shot over the previous system. My friend and I were going for neighboring plots and they won, so I'm taking that as a win. I'm more into the decoration, so I was given free reign.

Housing System has been trash for years, actually since it released. Been trying to tell everyone that, got banned for calling it S lmao.
This one isn't great either but 40 people standing on a sign and praying wasn't grand.
All of this still relies on RNG, but this ones more fair. Still crap though lol.

I agree. But it's still awful.
One of the other things about it unfortunately is that the optimal way to go about it is to wait until the last minute and to bid on the plots that have the least people there. It's still dependent on you being available to look for it at the right time akin to a housing rush, it just guarantees the result less (or in some cases, does guarantee it.) When they made the change it wasn't fair to the people who spent gil to prepare to relocate by owning a small, but I was never an actual fan of placard spamming, I just recognize that there was a process to upgrading your house or getting a plot with a nice view that it was all conducive to, and they ruined it with the lottery; and it was a change that wasn't bound to please everyone; and definitely shafted people who were playing by the rules; so to speak; in favor of others.

A decent compromise would've been allowing relocation and letting people bid on smalls, but in the end people would be disatisfied with that still because they'd just end up with plots they don't want anyway. Because there just simply isnt enough for everyone with the ward system.

Even if I say something like "this is a better way to handle it" the bottom line is no matter what anyone suggests, the Ward system will always suck the way they have it now.

They just need to do instanced housing and let people buy the size or style of the house they want. It can absolutely coexist alongside the wards the way they are now, and people would actually get to participate in decorating larger house styles for themselves and for others to visit; just like you can with IS. I've suggested this before, but even designing a skybox at the perimeter of your lawn and behind your house you can just kind of pick would be enough to sate people who want to live in a particular zone as well. Like Haukke Manor, Coerthas Western or Forgotten Springs

When I said this game is dragged forward by its community, I meant it. Getting people to talk about it so that they would have to flat out ignore it as feedback is more feasible than getting everyone to just quit.

Mainly because not trying won't serve you at all. I'm not gonna say "give up." because not participating in the lottery system doesn't really affect Square Enix, or Yoshi P, it just ensures you have no chance. The only thing that will hurt them is for people to unsubscribe from the game, and I doubt people will do that, mostly because of the community. If my friends all quit at once, I'd also quit, as I've meant every word of what I said in my previous posts; me wanting to participate with them is the only thing keeping me around. Other than that, if they get bad press they'll either have to address it during interviews or live letters, or it'll be obvious that they're ignoring it, and then maybe people will actually understand that they simply don't give a shit what anyone thinks. They have to hit a tipping point where they decide, but people also need to stop making shit up on their behalf as if there's no way housing could be served to everyone in a way that's acceptable to them.

This is exactly my experience too.
I managed to get two houses on different occasions under the old system, but they weren't through dedication, both times I stumbled on a vacant plot with no one else there. Pure luck.

And now I have one in Ishgard. Second lottery attempt, 2 bids, 50/50 chance and I won. Pretty much the same scenario.

There are multiple rounds to the lottery, try again and roll your dice again.

If this problem isn’t a Japan problem, sorry guys but you’ll never seen the lottery system reworked (unless some minor fix bug).
I don’t remember when something written in the NA/EU forum was taken in consideration by SE.

And, jokes aside, lottery system is the last housing problem but instead to rework all the system SE spent more than one year to develop that shitty island. This should ring a bell…

Instanced housing is 100% the only solution. They proved they were capable of doing it with Island Sanctuary, and they were always capable of it because they had to have accounted for it when they made it so you could get a house, an apartment, an fc house, and an fc apartment all on one character. Because there aren't enough of them to meet demand, and there never will be until everyone can own one if they have the basic gil amount to own it. They could add 20 more wards, dead empty, and it STILL wouldn't be enough. Why dont you guys get that? Just do the math! Average the bids on each one, count the houses per ward, and multiply; maybe even subtract the goblet plots for good measure. No one wants the smalls, so wards are stupid! So please, please just make threads about that instead of demanding more wards, FFS.

You're acting like no one has tried which is so far from the truth. Plenty of people have complained about how much instanced housing is needed. You can literally search the threads on here to see it for yourself or go through my post history if you want. I'm in several of them.

The reality is: The devs don't want to do instanced housing. They want the ward system and aren't willing to budge. The ward system is also their way of ensuring people stay subbed via the demo system, as predatory as it is.

That's why we continue to get compromises (IS) or new wards or changes to placard buying instead of instanced housing even when we ask for it. No amount of complaining on our end is going to solve anything if the devs are set on having the system we do.

If we were going to get instanced, we would have already or maybe it's some big surprise for 7.0. Who knows. You're right to be angry about the system but we're not to blame for the devs not wanting instanced.

This isn't true for all of us who wanted a med or large. I went to the lowest bidded large in ishgrad(bc I want to live there and not the ugly goblet) and still lost even tho only 2 other ppl were bidding on the house. This system is a feelbad system because all the power is taken from the player's hands and left to an rng system. If we was on the placard system I would most likely have better odds bc I would log out near the house I wanted the night before the maint that unlocked the ward and then wake up 30 min before maint ends to hope to get in before anyone else. That is how I got my very first house in SB and it felt amazing. It felt like I was rewarded bc I took the time to think out a plan and woke up early. Even if I didn't get that house back is SB at least I know I tried my hardest. Now tho I feel empty when I lose a bid because I know there was nothing I could do. All the power is taken from my hands and rng god just didn't shine on me. On top of that, I have to walk back the plot and watch the person who did win standing there enjoying thier house just bc they go lucky in a random num picker. They didn't work for that house, they just got really lucky. Yeah clicking a placard isnt a good system either but the lottery isn't much better imo. It still makes you feel bad when you lose a house and for me, I honestly feel worst in this system bc I have to rely on one thing that I have always been bad at and that is luck. I'm always been really unlucky in loot rolls and genshin so a system that requires being lucky means that I most likely will never leave the area and I might as well just give up.

The new system is miles better than placard clicking but it wasnt going to ultimately solve the issue of a limited plot system. People need to quit getting salty over the lottery and instead actually direct their salt to how housing is limited rather than putting resources to instanced housing

Well, I never said it was better. I just said that the placard system wasn't a good system. I don't think the lottery system is any better than that. Personally, I want a mix of the lottery and first come wards as they promise us before they added the lottery system. That way I can choose what system to interact with and be given the chance to wake up early on the morning they add new wards to get grab a house. Shoot I personally think med and larges should be on first come and smalls are on a lottery system since med and larges are a lot rarer than smalls.

Well, I never bring that up bc that is the person's choice to do. No one forced that ppl to do that. As I said I don't think the old system was good but to act like this system is any better is silly. I personally don't like a system that completely relays on rng and takes all the power away from the players. At least when I got my first house in SB I worked for it by making a plan and waking up early the morning when the new ward was unlocked for private buyers. I was rewarded for that hard work. Unlike now where it doesn't matter how hard I try to move my house I'll most likely still lose bc rng wasn't in my favor. To me, that feels a whole lot worst. Yesterday I went all day feeling depressed and hopeless bc I lost the plot I bidded with the lowest amount of ppl. How is that any better for my health? My day ruin bc of rng.. I still feel depressed today.

At least when I got my first house in SB I worked for it by making a plan and waking up early the morning when the new ward was unlocked for private buyers. I was rewarded for that hard work. Unlike now where it doesn't matter how hard I try to move my house I'll most likely still lose bc rng wasn't in my favor. To me, that feels a whole lot worst. Yesterday I went all day feeling depressed and hopeless bc I lost the plot I bidded with the lowest amount of ppl. How is that any better for my health? My day ruin bc of rng.. I still feel depressed today.

Feeling depressed over pixels is not even in the same ballpark of sacrificing your health. And yes, the system forced people to do that as it made it the most effective and only way to guarantee a house, and if you didn't, you didn't get a house, unless you were insanely lucky and stumbled across a vacant plot at the right time, which is no different to tackling the lottery RNG.
Btw, you weren't rewarded for hard work, you were rewarded for having a decent connection to the server.
Lottery RNG might be annoying, but it is FAIR, everyone has the same chance.
With the housing demolition timer back on and running again, lotteries are back on a regular cycle. If you didn't win one this time, try again net week.

It's interesting to me that people want to argue for one of two incredibly shitty housing systems. I won my first plot via furiously placard-clicking, and recently upgraded to a Medium plot via the recent lottery. I can say with confidence that both are, frankly, abysmal.


Placard-clicking gives the advantage of thinning out the pool of potential house-seekers, as only those who are willing (and more crucially, able) to spend hours clicking at a placard (or more likely, enable a script on their machine to click for them) will be competing with you. Lottery respects your time, but because it does so, the pool of players you're competing with drastically increase. Neither of these systems are a meaningfully satisfactory solution to a problem that is, at its core, right down to the design of housing in FF14.

There are three house sizes -- Large, Medium, Small. In a system like this, where there are superior and inferior plots, the only way to have players invest in the lower-value plots is to create artificial scarcity, where only a select few players can have a house at all. After all, it won't do to have wards and wards with hundreds of empty Smalls and Mediums, as if wards are infinite, most players will only shoot for the Large plots. Not all players, mind -- some will prefer smaller plots in more desirable locations on the ground of vanity -- but most will shoot for a Large on the grounds of it having more decoration space, and a higher allowance of gardening plots.

Many people have proposed instanced housing as a solution to this problem, but I've yet to see anyone satisfactorily explain how outdoor decorative items, a core feature of the housing system, would work in a system like that. I'm not saying it's impossible -- simply that it's not as easy as "just introduce instanced housing". In any case, how would the current system of Smalls, Mediums, and Larges transfer over to instanced housing? Could you have any size you want? Would the system replace the current neighbourhood system, or exist concurrently? If you could have an relatively equivalent Large-sized instanced house, what would be the point of going for Smalls or Mediums in a neighbourhood? These are all questions that SE would need to reckon with to solve this issue.

Their approach to the current situation, while ultimately still shitty, is one that makes sense. Continue to gradually add wards until they no longer fill up immediately, as a way of metering demand without creating ghost wards. It's an unsatisfactory solution, given that there is an inherent inequality between Small, Medium, and Large, and the problem is attempting to solve for "every player who wants one gets a house, of some kind" as opposed to "every player is able to get a house they are content with". In any case, it'd be incredibly difficult to walk back on this system given how much gil and time people have invested in it over time. The backlash would be utterly insane.

Honestly they could probably remedy this on NA/EU by paying for more server infrastructure and just slapping in like 30 more wards set to first come first serve, then changing it to lottery a day later.

Lottery would be better if it wasn't so awfully long too.
3 days for bids and 3 for results should be more than enough.

They are in the same ballpark. You telling me I shouldn't be depressed over pixels but I say ppl shouldn't have to sacrifice their health over the same pixels. At the end of the day, we talking about the same thing here. No one asked that ppl to stay up for hours on end for pixels and no one told me to be depressed over those pixels. Also, I was rewarded bc I made the plans and thought ahead of other ppl. A random number was just picked out of a pool. As I said before I never thought the placard system was good but I don't think the lottery system is any better. The only real solution to this is to give everyone a house and do away with the outdated ward system. Also, there wouldn't be a better chance for me to get a med or large next week or anytime soon going forward so I'm stuck in one of the worst housing areas in the game(the goblet). All my savings got two expac amounting to nothing just because I have bad luck. How is that f'ing fair to me? 30 more wards would definitely make a difference, but you wouldn't even need to go back to first come first serve with that many new houses.

We don't actually need unlimited houses, only so many play and want a house, it's just that the supply currently doesn't meet that demand. In some smaller servers, particularly JP and the newer EU ones when they were still relatively new, it wasn't uncommon to find half-empty wards with plots that just weren't being taken up, by anyone.

It's not that this system was broken form the start, it just wasn't future-proofed for such a rapid increase in players.

Just convert your "hours of clicking" energy into patience. The lottery happens every 9 days. If you're getting 1 other bidder every time, your 50/50 chance is going to turn into a win soon enough.
