I mean solutions that aren't just "hide shout chat and get over it" have been posted in the thread, so...

Nightclubs, the new end game. Evolution of FF14.
For better or worse, this game's RP scene has taken off and become something...well, I'm not sure what to call it. I can honestly say that I've never seen anything like it. But if that's what people enjoy, then that's fine. It's just not my cup of tea, not that I've ever really been much of an RPer anyway. Again, not my thing. I just don't take part and I ignore chats/PF listings. It's really that easy.
I find it interesting players complain about nightclub/club/RP venture adverts (and I've seen some very lengthy and using tons of ASCII whatever symbols in them) but no one complaining about the heavy-handed FC adverts that spam one after the other. Hm.
But you need to ask yourself, is the issue the advert spam or what is being advertised?
I don't mind that they advertise and whatnot...I just wish they would be open and up front what their night club is...
and it's always a group of people doing Bee's Knees in silence. It's super awkward. Been to about 10 now and try to talk with people but they just AFK and Bee's Knees...or in tells.
As much as I am not a Nightclub or RP person, I don't care if people are advertising their venues/activities as long as it stays in the "Other" section of Party Finder.
If they end up in any other Party Finder section, that is where I have a problem and will draw the line there.
I'm not fond of those either. They're just as bad, but at least to me, they haven't been as prelevant or obnoxious. For every 1 FC announcement, there's 10 Nightclubs.
I am a player who likes to actually roleplay. Pretend to be my character in the universe of the game. Not everyone does this, but I and many other people do. Venues that promote this type of roleplay are much harder to find because of the PF Spam.
And as I said, if a nightclub posts an add right as, say, someone posts an S-Rank Hunt Shout and I've got my chat window shrunk down or I'm not looking at the screen, I could very well miss that. A hypothetical but it can happen.
Boring. The word you're looking for is "boring".
I like roleplaying online, I like writing stories and acting out a character with other people. I've worked at a venue in FF14 and we tried hard to keep that engagement going with the people who visited. When I went to these nightclubs, there barely was any interaction other than the bare minimum, and people would just stand there, letting their characters loop /beesknees. That for me isn't roleplaying. There's just barebones interactivity. We're in a game with so much good lore, with so much stuff you can pick up on and interpret, expand upon, and you just stand there? I really do fail to see the appeal of it, at least so far as how people keep being labelling it as "roleplaying". Sure, what you do is your business, so if you're into that, props for you. But these spaces are so dominant and widespread that I wonder why people aren't doing more with them.
I roleplay my character as a very much feral dragon kin. When she goes to venues or restaurants or cafes it is very much with the intent to chew on the furniture, the cutlery, any books she might find and any dead things (she especially likes chewing on dead things). I seem to recall her even taking a bite or two out of a prop motorbike inside a restaurant which prompted the proprietress to rush out and give her some bones to chew on. It always end up in a fun bit of RP. No sexual innuendos required. Just a lot of fun keeping a feral dragon kin from chewing the place apart. Much conversation occurs during this and everyone seems to enjoy it. You have to make your own fun when you RP.
FC ads are nowhere near as common or intrusive and are at least trying to attract people to something gameplay related. I dont mind them in the same way I dont mind someone doing a shout for a crafter.
The nightclub ones are irritating because they roll on and on, its the same clubs over and over, RMT probably fuels the lot of them (lets face it, people seeking sex in exchange for gil will often put real money down for it), and its generally way more spammy than normal game shoutouts.
Of course there's barebones interactivity. Everybody is cybering in tells or off in a private room gambling. That's what those places are for. They're just a bunch of different kinds of TOS violations all gathered into one place. These venues damage the game's image by their mere existence. Doesn't help that PF and fellowship finder are clogged to the gills with their degeneracy, not to mention all the spam in every hub city on every single server.
I mean, you do that, but that implies you enter venues that will tolerate it, and I'm not looking to be a gremlin. That still doesn't solve the issue of the PF Spam and Shout Chat Spam.
It's been really eye opening with how people against the argument have either a) Suggested a "solution" that I already mentioned isn't optimal, b)Actively engage in ad hominine (calling me prude, telling me to grow up ). Was hoping to have a genuine conversation about this problem.
Just open a Fellowship for it at that point, you're getting the same without the fuss of decorating a whole house for it.
The one I worked at was a small bar. Since the owner and our friends were Hrothgars, we basically spun it as Hrothgars who came to Eorzea after the events of Zadnor to share Bozjan food and perceived culture. Worst it ever got was a salacious pun with one of our food's names, it never went past that. Most people just interacted with us and wanted to see how we expanded upon the content through food: we'd give them names and some lore and if asked on it, we'd come up with lore-abiding stories on the spot (with some pre-planned consistency, as we weren't allowed to use macros to explain our food's lore either). We'd cook for people, explained how they were made, interacted with the client and the staff if we knew it wouldn't get cluttered, and it'd go from there. And we used in-game items to make it feel more real :P if you were the client, I'd pity your inventory slots.
As for the PF/Shout spam... apart from Fellowships, there just isn't a place where people would actively check to know about that venue's existence. So most people resort to Party Finder and cluttering up people's chat logs. On that note I don't think it's inherently their fault, because they do have to advertise that they exist somehow. I blame the game for not doing a better job at keeping those things organized. Sure, you can check if houses are venues by talking to the Ferryman and checking a plot's tags, but that's so minimal and vague. It doesn't tell you what's going on in there, it doesn't tell you what the vibes/environment is like, it doesn't even tell you how long it's open. And apart from discords, there's just no easy way to ensure people visit if not going around town, do obnoxious shout macros and post on PF. It's not something people should do, but there isn't much of an effective alternative.
The culture of "RP" as a whole won't change in this game, until SE makes changes.
They aren't going to stop the shouts, the multiple entries in pf, violating ToS, and if they are doing it, the illegal activity, just because someone wanted to discuss it on the forums. As far as they are concerned, if they are not banned for it, it's not wrong (even if it is illegal). Name calling is their only defense, because there is no defense. I wonder how many actual SFW venues people would never open, because they don't want to risk a certain crowd from spoiling things.
Reasonable takes now considered trolling. More news at 11.
I say, leave them alone. It's probably the closest thing to a nightclub they'll experience.
Fun story: I went to a Gothic Nightclub that is...somewhere in Phoenix. I don't remember exactly since this is like a decade ago. However it wasn't my scene by my GF at the time insisted we go. So we get there and she is dancing and I'm sitting on the couch. So one guy comes in and starts dancing with his Lt. Worf Action Figure. That dude has good tastes in dance partners.
However later on in the night a group of about 6 dudes come in wearing Nun outfits and their hair/beards colored blue. I talked with them a bit and they were pretty chill dudes.
Prior to Covid, there was a bit more variety in venues. Libraries, cafes, nightclubs, taverns, adventurer guilds etc.
With lockdowns, nightclubs exploded in popularity and the RP scene has never really tipped back to that equilibrium. The reason they got so popular during Covid was because of the social aspect. You could emulate doing things nobody could do anymore. People were taking their IRL friends to these virtual clubs because they couldn't do so in reality anymore. People were cracking open beers while chatting, dancing and partying in the clubs. The DJ thing started because of Covid. People wanted to interact with a DJ like in the clubs they went to IRL, so they would open twitch and make requests. Now as Lockdowns abated, most of these clubs started losing popularity because the social aspect was the primary reason they went and they could get that talking to people out in the real world and going to actual nightclubs and bars again.
And now they remain dominate in the venue scene for a myriad of reasons. Trend chasing, ERP services, RMT services, Glamor contests etc.
I miss the Libraries and Cafes because I could actually go to them. Everyone bans Lalas from Nightclubs because they're all ERP hubs.
Idk I really think if a few lines of text bothers you that much, there might be some other subconcious issue.
I'm too busy saving money on my car insurance by switching to geico, to worry about night clubs.
In all seriousness, the spam can be annoying at times but I just ignore it. That whole aspect of the game isn't something that has ever appealed to me.
Ah yes, the famous announcement ingame like theses :
"GRAND DICE grand openings Nightclub come gamble millions or even billions we resell on alternative sites ! We also offer savage "carries" / clears of all the content for just a few millions gils, and alternative payments, soul included, come join on discord and use "amapaypig" discount code we gonna make you a surprise price in the dm's ! I'd say that if you care about your account or house in this game you have to avoid a lot of people and even avoid erp's, any drama, any change of heart, or these people will use your logs and chats of erp as a blackmailing method, just play the normal game to avoid any of this, this is a plague.
There yall go again with the not enough people on Materia bull crap. I play on Materia, Ravana, and it is crowded. Even at night I am in a short que. There are popular clubs advertised all the time and I've been to a few where I had to leave because overcrowding isn't fun. Lalafell's don't party with talls.
Assuming they're putting the PF ads in the "other" section, it's quite easy to filter them out. And they should be putting them in this section. They're supposed to, anyway. Pretty sure you have grounds to report them if they put it somewhere else.
The shoutchat spam is annoying as hell though, I agree. I filter shoutchat for my own preferences, but for people who want to see the garbage "debates" held in that channel, it sucks to have to put up with spam.
All the 'Live DJ' stuff is annoying to hear as well... none of them are.. and 'live bands' when the only thing you get to see is just another bard bot band ran from someones mums basement and the likes.
Annoying to watch... Also these things are promoting stuff as well that is prohibited for minors as well and is a reason to that SE should look into it, one thing is what people do in private that is one thing, but openly promoting for it and spamming it everywhere is not.
Yeah I am on the same boat with you. I don't know why it became so popular to the point where it has to be blasted out to no ends on shout chat. I don't know why there is advice out there suggesting to "turn off" shout chat when shout chat is used for so many things. Its not fair to the average player who does not like spam. And honestly I think about the brand new players who enter the game and is reading all of this. They wouldn't know what to do, and probably would try to ignore it while doing MSQ. When the spam is this bad; I know they too would even be annoyed with it.
I'd think people would be more respectful about how many times they should advertise. When I do recruits for my FC; I only do one shout out for it once every other day. Of course I can only do it on my server, but even so; I feel like I am overflooded by these other advertisements that hop from server to server spamming the shoutchat. Heck there is players from other datecenters doing it now. Its terrible. I feel bad for my tiny effort to get my FC name out there because I am sure a lot of people are just tired of seeing ads in the first place. People think it does not affect the average player; but it do.
