It won't affect your PS4 login at all.
This only affects people logging in using a Windows Steam licence. Any other licences on your account (PS4 and/or Mac) will continue to function as before.

There you go Steam Deck users. Gabe also confirms he is playing FFXIV himself so I'm sure he'll make sure it works fine.

Well, Gaben better hurry up, as the game does not start any more since today.
Yeah I feel bad for linux users, only a small % of PC users are having issues but none of you can play at all sadly ( unless you're on PC License not steam ).
Gabe Newell also plays FF14. He will notice quickly if the game does not start.
Cheers
Honestly, the whole Gabe and XIV thing just felt like a giant ad to me. I would say the only fix would be to install Windows, which sucks for the casual person who doesn't want to tinker with the Deck like that will be completely SOL.
It does make me lean towards client issue also, and since SE just made those changes, yeah might as well not hold your breath. I realize the # of people playing XIV is miniscule, but it's still a bummer..
Really hope they make the game more Linux-friendly. Steam Deck looks pretty cool and would be neat to play the game on it.
I am so happy I dropped Steam back in 2012. TF2 going f2p was the final straw, that and Valve dipping their toes into selling games that already have a launcher built into it set the stage up for these types of messes. GL for those having issues but companies are going to be companies, sorry. :/
I really hope they solve this before Thursday but I'm going to have to warn my static that I probably can't heal pandora savage this week, and I have no idea when I can return.
Like I get that the number of linux users is small, but is our contribution to the game small? Is our value as players small? I don't think so, and I hope that's not how Squaresoft sees it.
Square Enix does not support running the game on the Linux operating system, nor on the new Steam Deck. If there is sufficient revenue that can be attributed to players on those platforms they could consider it in the future. Linux users would do well to provide evidence demonstrating the value of that revenue before complaining.
stop being a hipster and use a real OS like Windows 10 or 11
I'm sure Gabe Newell is working day and night to make it compatible.
Aww. I feel quite sad for all 46 of you.
...
Sorry, couldn't resist.
Great community by the way!
What the heck is with some of hostility towards Linux users in here, jeeeeeez some of you have deep issues I would consider working through.
Tis not overwhelmingly difficult to develop software native to Linux even if not native with advancements in Proton and DXVK easier then ever to get non native stuffs running. Do not much care what Torvalds said about package managers or some indie dev winging about bug reports. Have assisted in developing much for Linux (mostly server stuffs), was no problem.
For anyone in here without something lodged within their posterior, have been poking about the source code for one certain forbidden launcher. They are already in progress implementing various things to re-enable Linux compatibility for FF14. If are familiar with how to read code can easily find their github and have peek for yourself. Most of what I saw was placeholder code buuuuuut there is hope! Will be switching primarily to Linux myself sooooon as cannot stand Windows 10 or 11. Enjoy having low memory footprint and install size for my OS thank you very much. Also do not enjoy when my OS believes it knows better how I should use my PC then I do.
Really really fun disabling annoying garbage over and over and over like Windows Derpfender on my Windows servers, really really fun mmhmm. Do not have to do that on my Linux boxes. Pop in thumb drive > install > launch os > grab dependencies > never require a restart ever again is quite nice yup yup. It does not even gargle down several gigabytes of memory simply existing either or decide meow is the time to index my entire drive for "faster search lookup" I am looking at you Windows localhost guzzling down more cpu cycles than a muckbanger.
Appearently someone has found a solution, unfortunately you need Lutris to run it, can't use the native Steam client for Linux.

The hate for a workable solution for the proton and more specifically the Steamdeck in this thread really does show how dense and bitter some people are.
The portable gaming market is huge and something that Yoshida has doubtless wanted to tap into in the past thus the rumours around a potential Switch client some years back. The Steamdeck is a far better fit for this game, is still highly affordable, brings along a vast amount of potential marketing clout and needs little to no engineering effort on SE's behalf for the game client itself.
No matter what angle you look at it, FFXIV is a great fit for the Steamdeck and in return, the Steamdeck and it's inevitable clones have the potential to expand the game's reach into a whole new market that until know has only ever really known ancient MMO ports or gatcha cash grabs.
But yeah, keep hating because it's not Windows. Tone the bleating down sheep.
/shrug
At least I'm sitting over here playing FF14.

Pot...kettle. Kettle...pot.
Somehow my adblocker didn't catch this one.
Linux sheep are a thing, too.
There are some things I'll openly admit to being bitter about.
SE opening up the doors to an entirely new segment isn't one of those though.
Are you genuinely trying to suggest that expanding the reach of this game to a new segment of players is in any way a bad thing? Your edgy jibes aren't cutting the mustard son.
Indeed. The Steamdeck and it's inevitable clones have the potential to go far beyond Linux diehards assuming Valve can keep the price consistent and actually go someway towards meeting demand (and I appreciate those are big ifs). If Valve can get them out in the sort of quantities that demand suggests then it's user base will be no more a bunch of Linux sheep than your typical Android users.
Got me! Say.. is there a chance you have not experienced coitus in some time? Short dudes need loving too.
Buuut I am kinda playing right meow actually! Soon-ish so will Linux users, perhaps will even make commit to the forbidden launcher github while you mald for no particular reason I suppose.
Do not care what the OS is called as long as it is light weight and efficient with capability to support the playing of games or running of my servers.
The heck are people tying their identity to the operating system of choice? It boggles the mind. I worked in system administration, you will never make me like Windows but unlike some I will not discourage others from using it. Unsure why the launcher even relies on IE or proprietary garbage in first place. Already exists working version on PS4/PS5 they could easily port over for better Linux compatibility. Nah, slinging insults is more of the funny!

It's not 'hate' because it's Linux. It's intense dislike of the sense of entitlement in "SE must correct their <insert favorite swear word> code because we're important to their bottom line and it inconveniences us."
Tone the superior attitude down a bit, O Linux Godlings.
Where do you types even come up with these memes? Darn fricken good at it!
They will have no choice but to improve their <insert favorite swear word here> code moving forward because the backbone of their launcher is depreciated, and no longer supported by Microsoft. Does not matter what is said in this thread or how much you wish Square your take you out for long midnight stroll and dinner at expensive restaurant. They can get with the times or work fifteen times harder later when reality comes knocking.
Linux Godlings.. jeezus jimmeny I cannot even. Gotta save that one when I set up my new encoding server.
I love hearing how Linux is so rare just a few or us use it, I must be going crazy but I think more than half mobile phones are running a Linux based operating system.
To be fair, from the perspective of desktop/gaming computing it is a pretty small market-share. Cloud computing (and mobile) is another story indeed, where Linux easily makes up 90% of the market.
That said, if the core game works effortlessly on Linux it's pretty unreasonable to deny the entire platform over something as stupid as the way they're choosing to render the launcher of all things. The amount of extremely hostile white-knighting in this thread is extremely embarrassing.
I don't use Linux myself but I do not understand the bad attitude from people in this thread. They just want to play the game why does it bother you so much? I have friends on Linux and have played with no issues for years ( and still no issues, the recent issues are purely a Steam problem ). Why does it bother you so much? Just crawl back under your bridge.
Cheating is also possible with Windows. You can run the game in an VM or start a cheat with Administrator rights and the game cannot do anything against it. It can propably detect a cheat and then shutdown itself. But there can be a new cheat, which is not detectable.
The problem with FF14 is, it relies extremly on certain Windows tech like Internet Explorer or DirectX. This can cause quickly serious trouble when those requirements are not completely met like with Linux + Wine. Also a new Windows version or a new security patch, which alters this Windows tech a little bit can make it incompatible or cause crashes etc.
Relying on Windows tech was not a bad idea for a very long time. Microsoft had a "high backwards compatibility"-policy in the past. Since Windows Vista they loosened it a little bit and with Windows 8 they loosened it more. Today i would not use specific Windows tech anymore. Because it can get deprecated very quickly.
Cheers
I highly doubt, that a cheater will compile an own Linux kernel only to cheat. There are way easier ways to cheat even with Windows. And i never heard of that, that there are cheats for Linux, which require a patched kernel. :) And banning people, who play on Steam Deck can have other reasons. Maybe Bungie and Valve are not friends anymore. Bungie has been aquired by Sony. Sony and Valve are competitors. :)
Cheers
