If by hardcore you mean trying to keep up with the gearing curve I think most will quit or go casual. Having alts (as many as your time allow) and do daily/weekly stuff is "mandatory", this alone will burn out almost everyone. I actually think Lost Ark is better for casuals since is packed with secondary content. Also, casuals will have more gold to spare to buy cosmetic/pets and the like from whales (in particular if you play on NA servers).

But yes, having the ability to customise skills and progressing beyond gear I think is super cool. Pity isometric stuff is just not for me. Oh, as a plus is totally free and for a Korean MMO you can actually be a F2P player and had a good time.

Elden Ring and Total War: Warhammer III will eat up some of my FF14 time for sure.

Then there's waiting for the rest of the Super Robot Wars: 30 DLC to hit so I can finish my NG+ save.

Not touching Lost Ark. I've played Gachas to years. I can feel its predatory nature pouring out. That is not a rabbit hole I ever want to fall back into.

I don't know what modern WoW has anymore, but being able to buy in-game money with IRL money hasn't been OK since EVE Online and it still isn't OK now. Especially in a grindy game, the incentives are just terrible then.

My understanding is that, in Lost Ark, you can effectively buy your gear with IRL money.

The main P2W thing FF has that I'm aware of is MSQ skipping. You cannot buy gil with IRL money as far as I am aware, that's why you can't even trade Mogstation items, since that'd become the same thing. So, yeah, being able to trade cash shop cosmetics is immediate P2W.

Oh no, they'll come back in only some weeks or months. It's a good game but the endgame premise is way too different from FFXIV to be any "threat". It's not a casual game nor does it really have good social aspects. Although you don't "need" to pay to really progress they literally have 3 different shop tiers, tier 1 pay nothing and be the absolute loser probably only pvp players since they don't get any shop bonus, tier 2 is pay like 30-40 euro a month to get the most worthy subscriptions and tier 3 is literally open end bonus to rip off whales aka upgrade material and card packs. A lot of people celebrate this Studio but it's extremely scummy to me, all implemented currencies and systems are the textbook definition on how to scam people into paying like a casino.

Well, first of all, the genderlock class is my number one reason that I don't play those kind of MMO. It's such a dumb reasoning to lock class over a race and/or gender... And the other reason is, the gacha system to upgrade gear. Literally P2W behavior...

Dunno why every Korean MMO are like this...

I refuse to touch KRMMOs with a 50-foot pole now. I had my fill of their bull with Aion, TERA, and a few others I probably tried out before joining XIV (and forgot about, since they are not all that memorable after a while).

Also, is it just me or do so many KR MMOs over the years look like they ripped TERA assets and changed them up a bit to look 'new'? I swear half of the ones I see nowadays look like that, even all these years later. It's jarring.

I'm definitely up for trying out Lost Ark in a few days. I've seen the interview with the director who seems like someone who clearly treasures the game and is upfront about it.

It also has some really alt friendly features unlike FFXIV that has some really awful practices in that regard. So yeah, until new content comes, I'm hopping over to Lost Ark.

I logged in! It was awfully quiet over on Atomos though; even considering my time difference.

What's Lost Ark? Are they looking for an Ark? There's a dinosaur game named Ark so maybe they should try there.

Edit* I didn't disappear because of that, but I WILL probably vanish off the face of Hydaelyn for a while when Total War: Warhammer 3 comes out.

This games community is so embarrassingly tribalistic sometimes.

To be fair, 'predatory' business practices are present almost everywhere these days. If someone is eager to collect as many mounts, emotes and minions as possible in FFXIV then they're looking at a lot of 'limited time availability' as well.

The usual counter is that they're entirely optional. Though that applies to other games as well, so...

I have never participated in another game community that has negativity circlejerks about every other game in the same genre to the extent that FFXIV does. It's mortifying, and out of place for a community that constantly pretends to be a welcoming beacon of positivity. This is like console-wars tier stuff lol.

You're posting on the forums of a game that:

- Makes you pay an additional monthly subscription for extended bank storage that can also generate passive income, despite being a subscription game.
- Demolishes your player housing if you unsubscribe.
- Also sells exclusive pre-order only editions.
- Has seasonal events with rewards that are relegated to the cash-shop after their limited time run.

This game isn't without sin in respect to sleaze either.

You absolutely have not seen many other game communities then lmao. There are communities that shit on THEIR OWN games because of preferences for one over the other. In terms of MMO discussion, WoW is also still way worse, although it has a strange dichotomy because often the forums are filled with people who don't like the game, so things are always very negative and yet whenever other games are brought up they are still trashed.

The only Ark I will play is Ark survival evolved and only because of nostalgia :D

But, I assume everyone just wants to try something new. So I would not worry. Just be patient. You cannot do much about gamers wanting to try new things. When the new Star Wars Eclipse comes out from Quantic I 100% will play that until I finish with the story, or maybe even until I replay it 2-3 times, cause I love all Quantic Dreams games. But that game comes out in 2026... sad times

While I do find FF's community a bit... overprotective (and it seems a lot of FF players have not played anything except FF titles), I overall prefer that to communities that hate on their games. I roll my eyes on FF folks sometimes, but it's nearly impossible to discuss anything reasonably in Destiny, Outriders, or New World communities.

But my annoyance of Lost Ark is not really related to FF. Lost Ark was forcibly put on my radar quite a while ago, I think back when a RU version was big, and back then I also was confused as to what the appeal was.

I'm not playing Lost Ark. I didn't log in because I had a hectic day IRL.

Man, XIV is actually great.
I can take a break and play another game if I want to.

If there wasn't PLA/LA/ER, I would've gone tackling other content like Ultimate.

Probably cause in the case of like dying light 2 it's already a bad reskin with an even worse story so no need to hit on it.

I wish more developers of these kinds of mmorpg's took this approach. Now I don't agree with a lot going on IN xiv, but that developer attitude to me is 100% approvable by me and I like that about the development team.


I dont really consider myself a gamer, I enjoy chilling with my FC and decorating houses and socializing in general and xiv provides that for me.

Not only does Yoshi P encourage it, but I think most of the devs now understand that many players resub for a couple months each expansion/patch to do the story and hang out a bit before dipping and waiting for the next, and that's fine by them since it is still money.

I wish people stopped repeating that Yoshida quote because based on how the game is designed, it absolutely does not want you to unsub. Otherwise there wouldn't be things as housing demolition, or staggering content to come out in different weeks each patch (6.1, 6.11, 6.15...).

I seriously doubt housing demolition is there to keep people subscribed, and not as a bandaid on the exceedingly low housing supply.

That's exactly what it is. I was here when they decided to impose the 45 day limit in order to open up plots owned by people who left the game. This was many years ago and the overall housing situation wasn't even close to being what it is now, but people on certain servers were still limited, so SE called Fair Play and added the demo timer.

It would be true that no game company actually wants players to unsub but this is one company that doesn't mind if you unsub. They know as long as they're releasing content players enjoy, the players will come back at some point.

Demolition is to keep a limited resource in the hands of those who actively play the game instead of letting it sit unused. It's not to keep players subbed. If it was intended to keep players subbed, demolition would happen after 7 days, not 45 days, so the players would have to effectively remain subbed to avoid losing the house. You can easily keep a house by subbing for 30 days then unsubbing for 6 weeks before subbing again. That's 60% of the year you can be unsubbed and still keep your house.

Staggered content releases work out to benefit of both players and developers. It gives players more to look forward to instead of consuming it all in a week. If there are issues with the content that's released, developers have a smaller number of potential problems to correct at a time so they can focus on getting them corrected more rapidly compared through sorting through a queue and trying to prioritize which out of a huge number of bugs to fix first.

As for YoshiP specifically, being a gamer himself I'm sure he is sincere when he says "please unsub and enjoy other games once you've finished what content you want to in FFXIV". Part of what has helped FFXIV's success is that he chose to learn from what other games did and apply what was learned here. The gaming industry in general is stronger when players play multiple games, not just by spreading money around but by watching player feedback to see what content clicks with players and what is less successful.

A player can easily unsub until the .x5 patch is released if they want to experience all the patch content at once then unsub once they're done with it. Unless someone is a progression raider out to clear all of Savage the first week of release, there's no overwhelming need to be subbed when a patch comes out. The content isn't going to disappear.
