+1
I'd love an augmented reality pop-up in real life that says: "Beware incoming depression" Do you want to skip?
I finally saw the CS I understand what you mean I was quite shocked that a scene like that would be in the game.
i can understand why people ask for a trigger but at the same time, put a trigger and the people will know something will happend reducing the impact of this scene... what make it your react like this it's because it's violent and unexpected... yes it's hurtfull for some people but honestly it was needed for the advancement of the story.
for the op i'm sorry to hear that it was hard on you, sadly i doubt they will do it. i will not say life is hard and such for talk about what did happend in this CS but like said it was needed for the rest...
I wonder what you'll make a troll thread about next, maybe about people disagreeing with you in this thread? worked well the last time, got like 20 or so pages, if I remember correctly lmao
If there was a trigger warning, it would need to be very non-specific to avoid spoilers. In that case, would you have even skipped the cutscene? What purpose would that have served?
Regarding the scene itself, while it was certainly shocking for some, there was no abrupt or unavoidably aggressive action. They made sure you knew what was coming in his words and actions. It was very obvious what was coming next.
I expected them to just shift the camera and hear a gunshot, but that didn't even happen. They completely cut to another scene and just showed us the aftermath. What actually happened in the moment was not visible or audible. I think that handles the situation a lot more delicately and still maintains the integrity of the storytelling. In my opinion that's much better than just slapping a trigger warning on it.
I'm sympathetic if it made you or others feel a certain way, but I don't think in this case the burden is on the storyteller to reveal in advance if something might be upsetting.
I empathize with OP, should have an UI option that your turn on and off, if you are a more vulnerable person due to personal hardships you switch up and the game warns you when you start the cinematic. And for those who don't want to be bothered with warnings have it off and game work as like now with no warnings.
After having advanced more in the MSQ, I still allow myself to say that: it won't get better after Garlemalds for depressed people, you'd better stop playing Endwalker, because it will be worse afterwards.
I say this without trolling, wait until you are less depressed to do Endwalker.
Some say and before, how did you do it? Well, apart from one creepy scene at the beginning of ShB, it's mostly fine.
Endwalker has taken a step forward in terms of telling the story of how people feel about the end of the world. And I think that's a big plus, but you have to put some distance between what's going on and your feelings, if you're hypersensitive avoid it.
The fragility of people. Close your eyes to the world around you if fiction gets to you this much. The game has mature themes. If it’s do “triggering”, skip the cutscenes and pretend everything is gumdrops and unicorns
Even if it had one, curiosity would have got the better of you and you would have watched it anyway.
I said it once, and i'll say it again.
All games come with a big trigger warning on the box. It's called the ESRB rating.
Not everything is about you. You are asking creative people to edit their work for your own comfort. I have issues too, but the world was not made just for me. If it upsets you too much, stop playing. Don't ruin the game for everyone else just for your sake.
They won't put trigger warnings, but if it helps you next time a character is alone, emotionally guttered and start loading a gun with one bullet, Esc -> Skip scene. It's the easiest way out of it and this scene. Shame there aren't any alternatives, but it is what it is.
https://www.esrb.org/ratings/29479/FINAL+FANTASY+XIV/ This is supposed to be the warning that people are supposed to listen to.
We call that the full ESRB/PEGI rating description.
Do people not look those up before buying a game anymore?
"This is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) in which players navigate a large cast of characters that engage in missions and fight the forces of evil. Players explore environments (e.g., cities, plains, caves) and battle human and fantasy creatures. Players use swords, spears, axes, firearms, and magic spells (e.g., fire balls, energy beams) to defeat enemies in real-time combat. Cutscenes depict a man being stabbed from behind, and creatures emitting splashes of purple or yellow blood when struck. Some female characters are depicted from low camera angles, with lingering camera views of their buttocks (i.e., up-skirt shots). Dialogue contains suggestive references; for example, "The netmaster's probably up in his office polishing the mast just thinking about her," "stick yer manhood in the forge," and "You cheating little whore!" Several characters are referred to as drunk or drunken, while others sometimes talk about wine, rum, and grog. The word "sh*t" can be heard in the dialogue."
And from PEGI: (actually mentions the scene in question)
"The majority of the game's violence is mild or moderate, featuring characters taking part in turn-based battles with little injury detail shown. However, cutscenes feature more graphic and realistic violence. The game includes a scene of implied suicide, in which a character is seen holding a loaded gun to their head. The suicide is not shown, although the character's dead body is subsequently shown, with a blood stained wall also visible. The game features scenes in which characters derive a benefit from smoking a pipe."
If people would do their danged research before buying something...
I'm not sure you read this scene quite right. As a lifelong soldier for an empire, Quintus could not envision any result following its downfall but humiliation and subjugation under its former enemies. He can only see that because it's what the Empire did to those enemies, but you know that the Scions and the leaders of the Eorzean Alliance are genuine in their attempts to provide relief to the Garlean people after what Zenos did there. And thus you also should know that he's wrong in his assumptions and decision in that scene. Releasing his soldiers from duty does help them in the following events, but his death does not.
lol, git gud
I don't agree with your take.
Dark themes are to make you feel sad or down. Nothing wrong with that. Kids playing this game are murdering people. So I don't think protecting the kids is also the right answer to this.
It is ok to feel offended or sad in a story, they are not feelings we should look away from, and I don't know your mental state, but it is your job to protect yourself, we can't give warnings to every little thing that could bother someone.
I did get a chuckle with the word trigger though. Fitting in this case.
Balmung moment.
I suffer from Severe Depression, Panic Attacks and Adaptive Disorder, so one can say that my mental health is down the drain. I take a lot of pills just to be able to stay somewhat positive and being able to sleep.
So I am from the group that according to you supposedly "needs" a "trigger warning".
No I do NOT need a trigger warning, the scene was lukewarm at best. And it does not show anything. The Tesleen scene from ShB was worse for me.
You can prepare yourself all you want if you turn-off automatic advance of story text.
No. People die and get killed all the time over the course of the story and that wasn't an issue for you, was it?
Trigger warnings in games and tv/movies are annoying and effectively spoilers. Most of the time if you get a trigger warning you know exactly what is about to happen.
In this case it would be a literal trigger warning, amirite?
No it doesn't. If anyone has been following the story and are somehow shocked a scene like that could happen then they clearly have not been paying attention. This isn't even the first scene of its kind that we saw. Far from it.
I hope this is bait because it's ridiculous.
There is a trigger warning already, its the games rating in case it hasnt already been said 20 times.
Please look at ratings before you play a game. Let me say it a second time.
Please look at ratings before you play a game. That is your trigger warning right there.
Perhaps you are self-inserting too hard. You are not your character, none of it is real. None of these characters are real. This is called Fiction.
A video game should never have that much emotional influence over someone. If it does, then their sub money would be better spent seeking the help of therapy rather than funneling it into getting so deeply into a game that whatever the character see's give them some sort of problems and makes their mental health worse.
The rating is there to warn you that these things may not be suitable for you, so perhaps you should not play.
The rating is not there for you to tell them to adjust the game down to make you feel safe.
I'm actually going to take off my glasses and be serious for once here. Because suicide is a thing. And it's affected me more times than I care to count.
So.... I do agree to an extent that some kind of warning usually should be posted. I would also like to point out that video games prior to launching them posts blanketed disclaimers that "Has scenes of nudity, sexuality, alcohol consumption, violence etc etc"
While I will never ever discount trigger warnings or thoughts of suicide, the blanketed statement I feel is enough of a warning to know what you'll potentially get into when going into any kind of game. That particular scene I would label as "violence - general" because suicide in of itself is a form of violence. Regardless of what one may think. The WHO declared it as "Self Directed Violence" hence the blanketed warning of violence.
Ref: https://www.who.int/violence_injury_...dviolfacts.pdf
I do want to make that part clear, despite my often posting against sarcasm and trolls etc. These are one of the few topics I'll ever take seriously 100%.
I'm sorry that you've endured things in your life and I truly, honestly hope that you have a network of support at your side. Just remember... you are loved. You are valuable. This goes for everyone who has ever had to struggle with thoughts or experiences like this.
As for you... I certainly hope you never have to go thru the pain of losing someone who took their own life. And if you have, then have some empathy. Not everyone here is a troll and out to get you.
Chill the hell out and grow the f**k up.
Thanks for ignoring the part where I pointed out that this is far from the first time the game has something like this. We got our trigger warnings several years ago.
And I have known loss but I don't venture into media that I know has a reputation for showing subject matter that is disturbing to me. FFXIV has a strong reputation for dealing with the many unkind realities about death, and this is not new at all.
Trust me. I didn't ignore a thing. It's called empathy. Not everyone understands the warnings that also serve as a blanketed statement hence my explanation and the resources I posted. Not everyone thinks suicide is a form of violence.
It doesn't mean you have to be an absolute dick about it.
What, like how Zenos killed himself? Haurchefant's blood spilling from his mouth as he says his last words with a hole in his torso? Tesleen's horrific death in which she was mutated into an abomination and literally vomited while doing so? Those are not good enough warnings about how death can be brutal in the game? Seriously?
If the above cannot warn someone then nothing will.
I'm that for saying the game has a reputation for how it deals with death and that this is far from the first time we see something like this? For stating simple facts? Really?
This thread is like someone complaining that Scream 3 has people killed in frightening ways after they had already watched Scream 1 and 2.
maybe don't play a video game that deals with real world issues?
Not at all, There is quite an easy way of saying
"There is a trigger warning in a cut scene in <insert quest name> when the character says <insert one line here before it happens> Skip the rest of the CS. There is nothing important that is said after this in the cut scene so you are missing nothing. If you are truly worried the dialog will be DM'd you."
That is what I have up on my FC discord. and it spoils nothing.
As someone who has battled suicidal thought and mental health issues (still am personally) that wouldn't be triggering, books, movies, TV shows, all do it. Anime does it. Its in the news everywhere, everyday, on the internet in our faces everyday. This isn't the first quest in XIV to even touch on this tpoc, its been done in side quests. Also THis isnt the first time Final Fantasy as a whole has done it. We kill people every which way as a form of game play. Like. If you as a person are so fragile you can't seperate fantasy from fiction, video games aren't good for you in the first place.
I genuinely hope this is a serious post btw. Because if its just bait to get people worked up thats p sick dude. Suicide isn't a joke to post on the forums for the sake of it.
Edit: The game is also Rated by Pegi, and the ESRB for a reason.
Edit 2: We've touched on Pedophilia, Attempted Murder, Murder, Manslaughter, Rape, Sex Slavery, Incest, And Last but not Least Suicide.
We saw a guy get his chest blown out, several people took their own lives. We've walked into hallways filled with Deadbodies. We're literally a Murderer, We murder people, a few quests even hint that we really really like it to. We enjoy kiling people and things.
But this is where you suddenly need a trigger warning? Especially when we go to the war torn country of our hated enemies we killed with extreme Prejudice for several expansions. the people whos lives we've actively been ruining for several expansions. And you didn't think our enemies in a war of several years wouldn;t rather kill themselves over working with us?
If they start putting trigger warnings on art, its not really art anymore.
