I have a burning hatred for AST despite healing being my co-main role with tanking. I hate the aesthetics, I hate the gameplay, and I don't get along with people that main it.

I've found maining DPS in any MMORPG to be too simple. It can be fun at times, but generally if I'm going to be waiting for others to stop making mistakes, I may as well play something that can pick my brain in the meanwhile. 15 years ago I've found that to be healer and my opinion hasn't changed. Optimizing HPS while still maximizing DPS is far more enjoyable to me. Tank is fun in dungeon content, as you get to dictate the pace of the run, but in raids tank is just a glorified DPS and FF14 doesn't offer challenging dungeon content.
I am a tank main and have all jobs to 80. The only to jobs that I really don't enjoy are DRK and SMN.
I am not a fan of the current SMN rotation and am super pumped for the changes coming to it in Endwalker. The new design of the class looks amazing for sure!
DRK, on the other hand, is going to be in a tough spot for the start of Endwalker. All 3 other tanks are getting amazing new self sustain tools and the DRK is getting squat. The design of Blood Weapon, TBN, and Living Dead are far too clunky to be enjoyable to play. None of these will be addressed by Endwalker changes either, so look for major changes coming to the job in the first or second major patches for Endwalker. Until then, I'll be a PLD main for the first time in my FFXIV career.
BLM just feels like such a hassle. It's rougher in unfamiliar content but even when I know the fight it doesn't feel worth it or rewarding for me to try to memorize every bit of an encounter to maximize DPS.
Basically any ranged job that isn't a healer. The more I try to play one of these jobs, the more I realize just how much I gravitate towards melee fighting in FFXIV. Healers are exempt because I enjoy this kind of support role, and I am more comfortable doing it from a ranged position. I thought RDM would be a shoe-in choice with its curative/raise and melee abilities, but that didn't pan out either.
What can I say? I like to be all up in the boss' business.
SAM, because I just don't grok it no matter how many training dummy hours I put in.
Redmage, Bard, Dancer.
Those are so overplayed that finding a party in the PF is a harder task than the duty itself.
Any tank because I don’t enjoy tanking in any way and any melee because I don’t like all this positional nonsense.
BRD and RDM are the only ones I truly have fun playing. DNC was okay for awhile but it just started feeling kind of awkward and slow after awhile for some reason. I like the aesthetic though so I guess I’d still put it in third place.
Mnk because I hate positionals.
I don't main healing jobs as I'm only just adequate at it (maybe), and it's not my cup of tea.
DNC and MCH
One being very bare bones and just boring to play and heavily automatic with lame mechanics drawing close to pointless (steps, talking about the steps)
And the other just as boring but dysfunctional like they made the most people pleaser job and have no clue how to improve it despite hundreds of viable options
Both can’t stand due to their immense popularity while pissing on MNK, SMN, BRD, SAM, NIN and BLM for having the nerve to require a attention span. And somehow are always the first to die on fights but now I’m just being petty. SMN in Ew will likely join this little marry band of starter jobs for beginners
BLM. I like mindless jobs and playing BLM optimally is far from mindless. The long cast time makes it worse. I don't particularly like casting and BLM has the longest cast times. Dungeons are fun with BLM but I can not go raiding with it so....My favorite is Bard and RDM, have to think the least in terms of when to use what skill.
Black Mage because i hate being glued to the floor like that. Ironically it was my first job in ARR, but it also played much differently back then. Was more spammy back then, you fished for Firestarter and Thundercloud procs and that was the rotation
I main WHM and secondary DNC and I don't play tank. I have 80 tanks. I just don't practice them. Which is a shame because I was a Protection Paladin in WoW and loved it through thick and thin. I enjoyed being the one to charge ahead and wade into everything.
I also don't play NIN though I love the aesthetic. I just fudge up the mudras on a regular basis.
That doesn't have anything to do with the class itself. I have plenty of times on DNC when I'm the dps that survives. I did a Fulmination run recently with just me and the tanks taking him down from 40% on our second time of the rest of the party eating dirt.
SCH and MNK.
I got my Monk to 80 with PvP, so that i don't have to play it.
I even failed the level 70 job Quest fight with the highest possible gear. Lucky the easy mode exist now.
And scholar is in my eyes a boring healer with a clunky pet.
Healers don't main anymore. Once mained healer way back in 1.0 and 2.0 but not anymore. I don't like any of the changes they have done to them. Next is blm or any class where don't move and just stand in one place for the whole battle.
Completely disagree with both of you. White Mage robes are reminiscent of Catholic Church Robes and Shinto Priest robes, Neither of those are Feminine, and Dancer reminds me a lot of a Dervish style (Turkish Men only dance) mixed with other middle eastern dancing styles. So it is very Neutral, more so than many other Jobs. Warriors and Gunblades are just as Stereotypically Feminine as they are Masculine, ie Red Sonja for Warrior, and the Anime Trope of the little girl with the massive gun is a thing, like a seriously common trope. To think a class is Masculine or Feminine is not only sexist, but it diminishes the class fantasy, because you are trying to place it in a fantasy that the job doesn't actually hold. For every Male Gun Tank character I can think of a Magic Girl, or Vampire Girl anime that has the same character but female. For every Male Barbarian Trope there is a female one with a bloody axe. For every Shrine Girl there is a Male Priest doing the same thing, for every girl belly dancing there is a troupe of guys spinning and dancing. Stop thinking so narrow minded, and English Prudish, and realize that Victorian Masculinity isn't the definition used for other cultures and nations.
I'm not big on proc heavy jobs (like Bard and Dancer) that, at any time, can have their hotbars light up in 4 different spots and say "hey, pay attention to me!"
In part because I can easily tunnel vision my hotbars, so this is a good way for me to suddenly stop paying attention to mechanics.
But also because I enjoy learning the muscle memory and rhythm of different boss fights, and proc jobs march to the erratic beats of their own drums.
Tanks and melees=boring roles
You contradicted yourself the moment you mentioned class fantasy.
Healers - and generally support roles - are often associated with female characters. It's just a common trope. This is true for Final Fantasy, too.
White Mage especialy has been heavily associated with female characters.
In the Origins port of Final Fantasy, the WHM model is a woman (it's a man for the other jobs). Most of the names you can choose in the Dawn of Souls remake are female name.
In the opening cinematic of the 3D remake of Final Fantasy III, the only female protagonist is selected to showcase a White Mage.
In Final Fantasy IV, the white mages are Rosa and Porom, two female characters. In The After Years you have Leonora, another female character.
In the universe of Final Fantasy VII, Aerith is associated with white magic.
In Final Fantasy IX, the White Magic skillset is exclusive to Garnet and Eiko, two female characters.
In Final Fantasy X, you have Yuna.
In Final Fantasy XII, the only characters that learn Cure and Blindna are Ashe, Penelo and Fran, the only playable female characters.
The main exception to the rule is Minwu, a male white mage from Final Fantasy II.
Seems a bit unbalanced, don't you think?
WHM has been historically associated with a specific sex. A lot of glamour items are more stereotipically feminine, as well as some animations, most notably Assize. It's not sexist to say that some things are more stereotipically masculine or feminine. It is however disingenuous to act as if all of this is in specific players' heads and not a confirmed trend, but go ahead.
I assumed I wouldn't have to say this but, when I say masculine and feminine I don't mean male and female. Red sonja is the big amazon redhead in the platekini right? She would just be a more masculine female is all. Roe females in this game have a more masculine build which has no bearing on their personalities while also still clearly looking like a women. Same for the Male elezen looking a bit more feminine. Not Femboy or trap or anything like that, just more feminine is all.
Also big buff amazon waifus are my jam and I hope if female hrothgar get made they are buff like the males. Calling me sexist and prudish seems a bit funny with that in mind though.
edit: Now that I think about it, what are you even on about? Rory Mercury had a feminine build with a masculine fighting style(giant heavy axe with large smashing attacks). You know that you can have aspects of both right? Ky from guilty gear is def leaning towards the feminine side while Sol is more masculine and both are men with no question.
I just don't like Melee DPS Classes.
Which is a shame because those are some of the most interesting Job Questlines I hear.
I fall asleep when I play DRG, it consists of 2 long combos and some small subtlety.
BLU, this is not a real job for me, we dungeon random sync.
SCH heal with a pet, it's boring.
BRD-MCH, jobs without positioning are boring especially those two, I feel no pleasure.
GNB, it's a light tank that takes less, has almost no regen by itself (useful when the heal is sleeping), not to mention the problem with Superbolid.
SMN, the caster who poses DoT, it's the same feeling as for BRD, for me. I don't like jobs with familiar.
Etc.
Anything involving super complicated rotations cause I got brain capacity of a peanut ahaha
Arguing about whether something is "feminine" or not in a game where many of the male characters themselves look like girls anyway is silly. I say that because in my perception they do. In your perception, it's possibly different. Is it feminine because they wear robes? Do you think any clothing that is sort of like a dress is not masculine? Does it even matter to my own perception? No.
Exactly. When I see Gandalf I don't think "Why is that old man wearing a dress?". I think of a mfing wizard!
I DO however wish there were more 'Armored' Healer options. Although just a quick glance at the Eorzea Collection website gives a lot of good armored healer looks that can already be attained in game.

The point that is often raised isn't that robes are inherently feminine so much as their design, quite often, leans towards feminine aesthetics. At least where healers are concerned.
I'd also note that there's often a strong push from those who benefit from the status quo to downplay such opinions.
I can agree that in at least White Mage's case, yes the robes do look more feminine but honestly that's really the only class that has that aesthetic on it's Class Sets. But there are also so many ways to just Glamour Plate over it with better looking sets imo that it doesn't really feel like an issue at all to me.
As far as your claim the 'status quo' is trying to silence you I don't really know about that, I certainty aren't trying to do that. It's just a preference after all.
For me, it'd be ranged dps. I enjoy just about every other role, predominantly casters and some melee dps (SAM, DRG), followed by healers and then tanks (although probably not enough to play them if I were to do stuff like savage content as I prefer dps for that), but I've never found myself able to get into ranged dps. MCH is probably the one that bothers me least.
There was a whole other thread discussing the "are some jobs too feminine" thing, can we not derail this one with a repeat?
I don't main any other jobs other then monk, because all the other jobs that aren't monk, aren't monk.
Monk.
Also..
Lyse best girl. ♥
monk because kill me
too many positionals
i play a tank for gods' sakes dont ask me to move around AND play my class at the same time
