Those won't work with the SE (unless something changed in the last few days).

some debit cards can be used like credit cards for online purchases, but not every debit card is like that
In my case three reasons.
1. As I am older than many on here, I have numerus forms of financial access in the forms of cards and accounts. Crysta allows me to choose which of those financial forms I want to pay for anything related to FF14. You might say, why not use just one?', and that is a valid question. And the answer is I don't want to by tied down to one form of payment in case it needs to be used elsewhere. Crysta allows me to choose where I want the payment to come from month to month.
2. I don't always feel like playing. By leaving my subscription Crysta payment only I have total control when it is active. If I don't want to play next month I simply don't add any Crysta to the account. If it was attached to a card, I would have to manually turn it off and would be screwed if I forgot to.
3. If SE ever gets hacked one day and someone steals financial data, I would have nothing to worry about since I have none on their servers.
Crysta still seems like an unnecessary complication to me. I really don't understand why anyone would go through an extra step. It's like going into a store, buying a gift card with your credit card and then buying your items with the gift card. Am I missing something?
I was more questioning why anyone would use the system and purchase 9000 Crysta that goes unused for 2 years and then be concerned about expiration.
Just some questions on your points from someone who has never purchased Crysta or felt a need to purchase Crysta.
1. You can change your base form of payment anytime for a purchase or subscription, regardless of Crysta. How is it advantageous to use Crysta?
2. On the flipside you have the added step of needing to add money to your account every month when you want to play so it's not really any more work to sub/unsub normally. In my case I play more often than not so it would be more work to have to manually pay every month. Is the only advantage here if you forget to unsub, your charge would essentially be denied because you don't have enough Crysta?
3. How are you purchasing the Crysta differently from direct payment that they would have none of your personal information? You still have to use the same type of payment method.
From the quoted post they use Crysta to use different payment methods to add towards a lump sum for later when they feel like playing. We can all say if we'd rather pay another way but OP had their reasons and only using a service SE offers - no real reason to probe them more than that.
IMO SE should make it more clear Crysta expires after 2 years. You have to do some digging to find that info.
Yeah. I mean how a person pays has literally no effect on me or anyone else so I don't really care aside from genuine curiosity. The fact that they purchased such a large amount and never used it was what really made me think "is there a good reason someone would do that?" lol.
As others have surmised, I use paypal to buy the Cryata.
Usually I have one account for fun and frivolous stuff for things like this. But if it happens to be a little low and I need to quickly pay for something game wise unexpectedly that it won't cover, I can just use a different linked account to buy the Crysta. Yes, despite my best efforts to keep that F&F account filled, sometimes an impulsive big purchase drains it a little TOO much. LOL
But you are not wrong that it IS a bit convoluted going though all those steps. Having one linked card would be considerably easier. But I have been doing it for four years now and am kind of used to it all, multiple steps and all. I actually wish more games would allow things like this, to use paypal to let you pay for your subscriptions and keep your financial data off of their servers.
Strangely enough, I used to buy everything with a dedicated card but suddenly Mog wouldn't accept any of my cards for cash shop payment. Eventually I emailed Customer Service and told them that if I couldn't at least use auto-pay for my sub, I couldn't use their product (I had the account set up for auto-pay already). So...apparently my dedicated card is good enough to charge my sub but still not good enough for cash shop purchases. I usually use paypal for crysta, which is a slightly annoying extra step but I only buy it when I want to make a purchase. Sorry for your loss, in any case.
Wait this is honestly news for me. I purchased Crysta back in 2013 and it has never expired so maybe the rules have changed from when I purchased it. The reason I still have some is because I don't have enough to use it on anything lol
Isn't it illegal in most states for gift cards to expire within like 5 years?
The link was for EU the people commenting about crysta seem to be mostly EU. I had very old crysta (NA account) and it worked. With the cash sop people with odd leftover amounts should be able to find something to use it on. It was a horrible system for customers, probably won't be the last.
Is it those cards you pre-load with a sum of money? We used to have Maestro cards but replaced those many years ago with regular Mastercard/Visa card with some limitations if you're under 18.
That type of card generally don't work on any online purchase. It's basically a ATM card (at least how they worked in my teenage years which is a long long time ago)
That just sounds like a typical Electron/Maesto card to me. I can't speak for all countries in Europe or EU alone but they are being phased out if not already in most places.
More common nowadays is what i explained earlier with Mastercard or Visa, or a restricted version for people under age of 18. Those card still works for online purchases.
These are the payment options I have and I just use ELV:

My card looks something like that. It's just a normal debit card (or girocard).

I am using crysta cause stupid I2501. The point is, there is no warning when you add crysta. On the entire SE website, there is only one page telling such information. And that page, it’s pretty hard to dig out.
Seriously, if you have so much trouble with the payment options in the Square Enix's online shop then buy a game time card code. You can buy them on Amazon or other shops. If Square Enix doesn't want your money directly then you can use this option. And Asmongold mentioned this on his stream that Square Enix makes it hard to give them money. :)
Cheers
That such a thing still exists.
Here in Germany, there was also something like that, for example, with prepaid cards for cell phones.
At some point, someone went to court with it and that went through all the instances up to the highest court.
Whether it was only the highest German court or even the European Court of Justice, I do not know right now. Anyway, the decision was that neither money nor money-like funds can expire. They must remain available or be repaid.
This right here. I don't ever trust any game company to safeguard my personal information correctly. I will link a PayPal account because I can put hard limits on how much I can lose when the game company inevitably gets hacked.
On the flip side one of the banks I've used in the past had a hair-trigger for their fraud detection. Using it anywhere but a big box store was almost always guaranteed to get the card locked. I don't use their cards anymore.
I know that most canadian provinces don't allow for gift cards to have an expiry date unless it's promotional.
They accept Amex? Holy shit.
My expat fb group complains a LIT about Germany and this. Lol.
Can you buy Crysta for an NA account with a EU card? That's why I couldn't play my other account - I couldn't buy the expansion and put a sub on it with a Swedish Mastercard.
I want to put a month on it, move my old main, and take her gil lol.
