Will always hate gender locked gear.

Honestly, I always thought it felt lazy.
Not that they're doing it because they're lazy, but I really dont enjoy seeing a new boss and thinking "oh, instead of something new it's the obligatory Ifrit insert."
Either way, it doesn't change the fact that FF14 Ivalice and the Ivalice from any other game are completely unrelated. Them being echoes of each other doesn't even mean anything. It's just a cute way to justify a large easter egg.
As for the notion Ivalice "fits into" the broader story...
I mean... that's kind of a meaningless notion.
There isn't anything in FF14 that doesn't fit in.
And if Ivalice only "fits into" the broader story by not being at odds with it, being an isolated series of side quests, that's pretty disappointing.
I honestly don't see how anyone can be satisfied with Ivalice, let alone do so while also ragging on Nier for sharing some of it's failings.
And so far FFXIV have established that space, time and dimensional travel are existing things in this world, so Nier isn't too far fetched.
And the plot of the drakengard universe can be summarised as "eldritch god tries to wipe out humanity", which isn't exactly at odds with the doomsday beings appearing in final fantasy.
My issue with Nier isn't that it 'doesn't fit.' We have Omega, an alien robot who crash landed a long time ago and technology reverse engineered from him helped give rise to a massive technological empire.
My issue is that the actual Nier stuff felt lazy and tacked on. There's a history and backstory to Ivalice in FFXIV explored in the questline. They made it feel like a part of the setting. It feels like with the Nier raids they put as much effort into that as they do any other crossover like the XV or XI ones except there was more content to go along with it over an entire expansion.
There was no effort to really integrate it, it felt welded on. Where as with Ivalice, they reworked the history and lore of it from the other games to make it fit into FFXIV's setting, they didn't just have Ramza show up through a portal and help us fight some bad guys before peacing out.
Edit: Whoopsie some connection issues lead to me accidentally duplicating the post, deleted the extras.
My problem with the Nier stuff, not just the most recent one, is always the odd gendering of the gear- it's not locked specifically to one gender or the other, but the piece will display differently when it's on a male character vs. a female one. For example, the YoRHa Type-51 Jacket of Healing, on men:
and women:
As GrizzlyTank said before, it sucks to have your gear show an icon that looks nothing like what actually displays on your character.
There are many other pieces of gear like this in all 3 alliance raids. Female characters always get a dress or extra skin windows, panties or a skirt instead of pants. In the newest alliance raid the scouting pants are camo for men and plain pattern for women (???). It's just a bummer when there are already so few "boyish" clothes for women.
The Nier raids to me felt like pretty much every collaboration event in the various gacha games I play. Characters from whatever the game is doing a collab with appear from some portal 'from another world' and by the end of the collab story, things are neatly tied up and the visitors return through that same portal back to their world. A self contained, isolated story that doesn't otherwise affect or disrupt the game the collab is being hosted in.. and will indeed pretty much never be mentioned again outside of it's isolated section of the story.. ergo, characters from the collab that you get to keep using or more relevant here in a big MMO, the lingering gear and the environmental remnants in Kholusia.
But reworking the history to reestablish it in FF14's setting led to the longest cutscenes as they had to exposit what THIS version of Ivalice was, and where it slots into FF14's history. Which would be fine... if any of it mattered to FF14.
In the Neir raids, despite the story showing up through a portal before peacing out, you at least see how the story impacts the dwarves. ut in the Ivalice raids... it doesn't really go anywhere and it takes a looooong time to do it.
I was a little disappointed myself to see tank and drg just get another yorha set while the rest of the classes got npcs, and I don’t really touch either class.
However, the female set is gorgeous and the boots are, imo, the best thigh highs in the game. All of the sleekness of the 2B boots without the ridiculously skinny ankles and clown feet. So there’s that, at least.
Oh, yeah - don't get me wrong, I think they are very well made and would certainly use myself - but I'd rather have something that isn't redundant even if it ended in something that isn't my personal taste, as long as it's well made.
That's the same thing about hairstyles. I know we got 9S's because he's 2B's companion, but... at the same time we already have a hairstyle that is extremely similar to his and available to both genders. I'd rather have his outfit as a coffer glam, same way we had the 2B's one in the first raid, if we could choose one thing or the other.
You know, and there's even another side issue here. They want different pieces for both gender, okay... but at least make the design consistent. Save for the pants and shoes, the tops don't even remotely resemble each other. If we didn't know already, I'd never have guessed it's the same item gender-shifted.
Yeah, I feel you! And after two raids of Yorha outfits -and with the new raid having elements of Drakengard and the original Nier - they could have pulled from a number of characters for fend/maim. It actually kinda looks out of place next to the others. Like you said- very well made and suits my personal taste, but it lacks uniqueness the other sets have.
Why men have to have all the pockets both irl and in-game.
Gimmie pockets.
Gimmie pants.
I'm also pretty disappointed that there's been no 9S gear coffer... but also I'll add to your criticism that it's not only locked off by the sex of your character, but also by what job. If you play any job that's not monk/samurai or dragoon, then you can't use the Copied Factory sets to create that look and have to rely on outside pieces. And while this may be a tired argument... it just seems like more evidence of them catering more to female toons though hair and glamor than to male ones. We got the fan service panties... but not the male outfit.
I hope the flight unit mount is not put in as a mogstation item.
Job restrictions are also something i am vehemently against. They are almost always a "having the cake and eating it too" where the devs rarely adhere to their own restrictions, like Hilda the (Machinist?) using the hussar set which is exclusively restricted to DRG (Yes there are other variants of said set, but Hilda is explicitly using the DRG only one as seen on the red collar).
Then there is the arbitrary role assignment like most common is tank/drg and healer/caster having shared looks, but then it's suddenly tank/monk, tank/ranged, tank/healer... and the only difference are colors and a coat.
Just give players the same liberty to dress their characters with the same freedom as devs have when they dress npcs...
I just want the girl in red’s boots. I hope we’ll get more from the weekly quests.
There's so much hidden stuff, I kind of feel like there's going to be a way to unlock a hidden super boss in here somewhere...
Yes. It caught me by surprise! I feel like I ought to quote GIR from Invader Zim, when Zim pointed out a divergence from the norm. ("Something is broken and it isn't your fault?")
"I know. I'm scared too!"
You are not the first to reference the Solomon Grundy line in response to my usual Plea for Pants. I even posted the YouTube clip myself at one point. ;)
This raid series has more rewards in it than anyother 24 man series and you guys are still complaining that it isn't enough? Guess some people really can be pleased
I actually wish aiming got something similar to the fending/maiming sets. I'm fine with lacking uniqueness if it means the set will be pretty. Heck, I'd go as far as to say the fending/maiming sets are the best sets from the raid. Everything else was just lazy and/or not pretty. I know some sets work for fans of Popola/Devola, but we could've gotten that as a glamour like the 2B dress. Healing and casting are just mirrored outfits with no recolors whatsoever. And aiming, scouting, and striking got the copy/paste treatment with the last 2 getting a very meh color scheme. Overall, I'm personally very disappointed.
Im hoping they add some more stuff. Themed weapons and a flight unit mount were some of the things I was hoping for... and yet nothing... I also wanted more YoRHa themed gear from this raid noth other Automata NPCs...
I was speaking more about like...unique to the raid if that makes sense. I think the healing/casting and aiming sets are pretty ( ;-; ) with the added bonus of being cool for Nier fans who may like those characters. And honestly, I think the silhouette of the fend/maim gear is gorgeous and I like it a lot. Also the little hat works on viera, which is a treat.
I just also recognize that while other classes got something different this time around, fend/maim got a set that looks very similar to the other two tiers. Considering how many people were hoping for xyz character inspired gear while it was in development, it seems like a missed opportunity to get a little more fanservice in there before the opportunity is gone. Alas, no dice.
I sympathize. Even if I loathe the cross-over, having played this game for FF content and not Nier content :P, it adds a little extra salt knowing it didn't fully deliver on some knock out rewards for people.
I didn't know about Devola and Popola's outfit. Got hyped. Saw it was locked for caster. It's such a unique outfit, they could have put it as a glamour at least.
Oh well, I mean, maybe we could say it's better than nothing but still...
I think people complaining were expecting a mount being that the raid is a cross over. Yo kai, FF15 and MH crossovers gave mounts, cant really fault people for expecting the Neir raid being a crossover to follow suit. As for the glam/gender lock thing well thats been a issue for long time so no surprise on that one. Though I feel everyone should hold off some and see what we get as reward for restoring komra..
People complaining about rewards while im over here wondering why they didnt bother to write A2 into the story
Not so fussed on the aiming set for this at all, I just don't feel it fits with dancer in any kind of way.
They had so many other options but a big long robe type was not my thing.
Everyone shitting on the fending and maiming sets, but as someone that loathe cosplaying as story characters I vastly prefer them, the fending legs and boots are easily the best pieces of the raid.
Never ever, the only thing 95% of us actually wanted.
