Ok, i give up! But only because you said so.
I will not.
I will stop posting wanting elements from XI when the community stop pushing FF-WoW ONLY!!!11!.
It works both ways.
Mainstream style is garenteed to fail and XI is garenteed to only keep a small playerbase(aka fail).
They need to find the right mixture to keep the hardcores, XI diehards, and casual mainstream ppl happy or the game will just fall apart. They have work to do... considering no mmo has ever accomplished this.
Why are people so narrow-minded?
This is a Final Fantasy Title.
So what if it borrows idea from another Final Fantasy title. It is, after all, a franchise. And why is it limited solely to XI, what if this game takes an idea from Final Fantasy 8?
OH NO THEY ARE MAKING A FLYING SCHOOL. BOYCOTT BOYCOTT BOYCOTT
I do promote these threads because it gives me some entertainment at work.
I'm not saying he is a bad director, but you realise this game was released in september 2010, right? By Rise of Zilart standards, if I can make a comparison, i.e., the western release of ffxi, content in FFXI was basically doubled since JP release. So within a year, there were huge improvements to the game. The staff upheaval when Tanaka stood down may have actually crippled progress for FFXIV for all we know. I mean, in FFXIV, we've had some improvements, but no new areas that weren't already in the dats since the official release date. There's been progress made, but come on, not as much as you'd expect for 2 years of continued development.
I realise it's an uncommon situation since most of the progress they've made is still under wraps, and that's my point, we haven't even seen their progress, so you can't act like Yoshi has proved himself the amazing director everyone says he is, yet.
In fact, I think the game would be in better shape now even if Tanaka was still on board, and I say this because we would actually SEE the progress, rather than it being hidden away for 2.0. Progress was happening at a rapid pace even before Tanaka stood down. Don't you remember the rather prompt release of NMs and debugging that happened after release? They even alleviated a lot of lag? And they increased timers for food and guild facilities , etc, so already they were listening to feedback and building the game around that, and making it less punishing.
And there are still a great many complaints, today, many directed at things S.E. intends to launch with FFXIV. Just take that content finder thingy as an example.
So in conclusion, Yoshi might be good. Might be. But how do we know until 2.0?
Tucking all the content away for 2.0 is a very bold strategy... only time will tell if it works to his advantage...
We can make predictions... but the gaming market is fickle and unpredictable...
No one knows what will happen come 2.0....
A big E3 and a strong Famitsu score will help... but it's still anyone's guess overall
LOL hhahahhahaha I love this !!
^This. I am anticipating every tid-bit of information I can get from E3 about Version 2.0. I do think SE has a really solid chance of turning this failure into a mild-success (maybe not a shining one...it will always be tainted...). Although at this point they would REALLY have to screw up to get me to leave the game. But I still have high expectations for 2.0 that I hope SE can meet.
Meh, in an immediate sense it would seem severe. On a slightly larger timeline it's a situation where he cannot lose but only gain. In any industry, if an individual takes the helm of either a sinking ship or a failed project they immediately have the "out" of "I inherited a no-win situation." This is nice because any improvement is a gold star. However, if the project succeeds, it is because of the vision and ability of the individuals involved - it's icing.
Perhaps in Japan the impact would be greater (due to cultural differences) but on a global scale he would be received as almost a hero who committed himself to a cause he could not win and did so with conviction. This is similar to William Wallace and Davy Crockett at the Alamo. And, even in the case of ill-reception in Japan, time will fade the scars nicely.
Did someone just compare a gaming industry person to people who died for their countries/beliefs/to try to end oppression? I think my brain just started dripping out of my ear. extreme examples ftw!
Actually, the Scots did not fight against oppression - Longshanks was as reasonable as the era could dictate. His son, however, was the villain. Also, the Scots fought for French rule as opposed to British rule. But, as for the extremes, the philosophy has always been that if it exists on the extremes then exists in the regions between.
(Sorry, i tried to shorten the post as much as i could :o )
I fail to see the logical basis behind your statement that it was never intended to be XI-2.
The game is called FINAL FANTASY XIV - ONLINE -. When you slap that name on a game, you capitalize on its predecessors fame and glory but you also inherit the full wave of expectations. Therefore we can legitimately expect the bare minimum back bone that made the previous games enjoyable to be present. Sadly, on this day and most likely until 2.0, the bare minimum is not there yet and its inferior to XI: broken UI, broken commerce system, broken social interaction mechanics, etc.
Concepts taken from XI:
- The 3 city states
- The themes of the 3 city states
- The jungle zone entire design
- The exact same races +1
- The exact same jobs
- Many of the same monsters
- Most of the ability names and functions
- Notorious monsters
- Many identical food items
- Same leveling up system
- Same story line driving principle
- Same chat/auto-translate system
- Same command line options
- Almost the same solo xp highway (leve quest = fields of valor)
- I can go on.....
New stuff they tried in order to make it different:
- Stamina bar (failed)
- Once action per click (no auto attack) (failed)
- New xp gain system (random) (failed)
- New cross-class system (they are pushing back toward something similar to job+subjob)
- New highly complex crafting system (toned down severly)
- New graphic engine (ended up in a bland and repetitive zone design inferior to XI)
- New server side architechture to prevent hacking (failed)
- New random monster distribution (failed. Brought back the progresive scaling of monster strength)
- New loot distribution system (failed)
- New merchant ward system (OMGfailed)
- (i was tempted in include inferior lore, but XI wasnt much better until Zilart/COP)
As far as i'm concerned, this game IS XI-2. They had to slap in another number because the story line was different.
There were very few members that actually left. It was simply a restructuring of the development team. So whoever is working on XIV now, worked on it when it was under Tanaka's terrible production.
I agree and disagree with you here. Nothing we have now is probably "new" except for grand companies and I don't think jobs were ever in the picture with Tanaka. The fact that Yoshi has shown off jumping means he is clearly exploring all options rather than just saying "We're investigating," or "Please look forward to it (in 5 years)."Quote:

I think you can tell that Yoshi has proven himself an amazing director. He's taken literally the worst game ever made (an MMO nontheless) and has clearly rallied the development team into a better position than Tanaka ever did over the course of the development of the game. The fact that Yoshi has come out and said that they need to rebuild the servers and the graphics engine is proof alone that he is far more intelligent than Tanaka when it comes to understanding current MMOs. The work that Yoshi has mediated with the same dev team that Tanaka has clearly proves he can not only lead a team of people, but can cohesively hold a vision and execute it. The current engine/game is still terrible, but look at what Yoshi has done with it. I guarantee you Tanaka would have just let it sit in the quagmire of death that still resembled the horrible XI engine.Quote:

I completely disagree with you here. Tanaka doesn't promote progress, he promotes complete stagnation; XI is proof of this. Tanaka didn't even want to implement a hardware mouse.Quote:

Lag was reduced due to the exodus of players from the game. The pace at which the development team is churning out content and fixes for a scrapped system is much more impressive than anything Tanaka did.Quote:

Given the fact that Yoshi has landed in the hospital, most likely due to the insane amount of work he is putting in on the game... im pretty sure he's at least devoted. You should probably give him the benefit of the doubt -- especially when he has done AMAZING things with the worst game systems ever developed.Quote:
So in conclusion, Yoshi might be good. Might be. But how do we know until 2.0?
While he has done a good job... I wouldn't call him an "amazing director" just yet...
We still have yet to see the bulk of his contribution.
Also, he has some proven and tested final fantasy developers on his staff...
He may end up proving his greatness... 2.0 will definitely be quite a barometer... but right here, right now, calling him "amazing" is jumping the gun a little...
And I'm actually a fan of Yoshi and what he is doing... Let's just try to be realistic
Business works like politics, people are loving him for his current small fixes that might not actually be his, and LOVING him for his campaign promises that 2.0 will cure cancer and world hunger. I'd rather shake the hand of the person who has the good ideas instead of just the person who has veto power.
2.0 will tell us if he is worthy of some praise, but I'll still praise his team more. The people who raise him up on their shoulders already, before he has delivered, are people who have fallen for the promises before they're a reality.
Listen to Gramul people. He is exactly right. FFXI's glory days are long since gone. We don't want the crap that's been added recently, I'm not going to exactly say when it went down the tubes as i'm sure we all have our own 2 cents about that. We just want the nice and exciting zones, the beautiful music, and that special experience and relationship to the world.
Rydin and I agree/disagree on fundamentals but I always believe that he brings up good points. This is one of them and one that we share.
The fans are putting a ton of unrealistic emphasis on 2.0. I know that part of it has to do with the common response of "...in 2.0..." but we let our imaginations run wild. I really hope people keep expectations realistic. No, realistic is not "I'm a paying customer and I DEMAND my socks be blown off" - that's entitlement. Hope for the best, expect better than now, and be prepared for something in between.
It's funny how everyone was crying that the game was so broken, then S-E announces 2.0 with a long list of drastic changes and only the XI fanboys keep saying how it will suck or that it's no big deal. Yet whenever they talk it sounds like they haven't even read half the documentation, they just skipped over everything that didn't sound like XI port.... which is pretty much everything.
I agree
Yves, stop making me agree with you....
I don't like this
But yes... I am anxious to see 2.0....
(Next part not directed at Yves... just general Commentary)
Since this game technically has 2 FFXI directors still on staff (Even without Tanaka, we still have Akihiko Matsui and Nobuaki Komoto) there is going to be FFXI ideas all throughout. Just how much... Well that's Yoshi's call... And I am ok with that
If you either want all FFXI or None of FFXI then you are probably setting yourself up for disappointment... but if you'd like the devs to find a happy medium... and have an open mind.. you just might enjoy what comes
This is why I like you. You actually understand and use common sense. Sadly some people (like the OP) seriously think the fact someone may suggest something FFXI related it'll be a clone or "you're living in the past and need to get over it".
Those recent Imperial Assaults on/near cities? Yeah where does that concept seem familiar? As you said we still have 2 lead XI people and becaise Komoto was on XIV staff I had GREAT hope of the era of CoP would return at the start of the game, what I mean by this is a mix of Challenge ontop of a Great Story with Amazing Rewards (Sea, CoP Rings etc) for your hard work.
Despite the fact he tells us people need to get over FFXI, he's one of the handful of people who constantly belittles the game and those who make suggestions about it and instantly will ignore the fact Yoshida has no doubt been looking toward the last MMO the company he's working for produced.
The XI fanboys, as you describe dont want XIV to simply a copy of XI, which it pretty much is anyway imo, but rather to be on par with XI pertaining to usability and enjoyability of the game. Since SE is on damage control mode, the quickest and safest way to repair damage is to bring back tried and tested components. No one has any issues with bringing in new stuff, but i do not believe anyone would tolerate any regression in the game's usability.
2.0 should be the reset level requiered (new foundations) to start producing new content and gameplay elements. Very high level of expectations. They cannot fail this so trying new things now would be risky.
I try not to post redundantly, however i would like to highlight what Rydin said because he is completely right.
If your excited about 2.0, whether or not you have read the whole roadmap, why care about these small unequivocally stupid arguments on where the content is coming from?
The game was designed in a way that mirrored XI. If you've played XI, you'll understand the level of inspiration taken when designing XIV.
If you're in it for the long run, I'd say get comfortable with the idea of XI coming up a LOT.
No offence, but that is such melodrama. And when did Yoshi ever single-handedly "do amazing things" with the "worst game systems ever developed"? Basically the same people who originally made the infrastructure for FFXIV are now the same people fixing it. And producing a 'status quo' type game isn't exactly being progressive by today's standards. Look around, all the next gen games are otherwise doing innovative things, from Guild Wars 2 through to TERA, even. And FFXIV just adds instances and makes some touchups to the U.I. Oh, how amazing! How did Yoshi ever do it!? I think it might be a serious wake up call when FFXIV 2.0 still only has good graphics going for it.
point me to the challenge when you have powerleveling for the main xp and speed runs in raids.Quote:
You need to get out of your comfort zone and accept change as a good thing.
Well, aside from the standard features that be present in any MMO (UI, etc.)
1. Familiar zones (via 2.0 concept maps)
2. In-game housing
3. Hamlet (all descriptions are similar to Campaign/Besieged)
4. Traditional primals
5. Release of AH
6. Summoning
7. Taming and pet development
8. Introduction of legacy items
9. Coliseum
10. Alliances
This is excluding mail systems. And this is solely via the roadmap documents. Aside from roadmap items, there are additions that have been confirmed via dev posts such as seek flags and world NMs.
Wait! No way - ALL OF THESE ARE COMMON STAPLES IN ALL MMOS?! The only difference is that it is branded in FF fashion. Why people can't see this is beyond me.
I lol'ed on the title being, "You need to give up on XI-2" and one of the first lines being, "I don't want to start a fight with anybody" or something to that extent.
THEMS IS FIGHTAN' WORDS!
~~~DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW FAST YOU WERE SCROLLING?~~~Don't forget to check out the Tail Option Thread. Vote for a brighter future for all Roegadyns!
Honestly, I never played FFXI.... but you can just look at screen shots of the zones and see the variety and diversity and say "I would love for FFXIV to be that diverse" without being a super FFXI lover
Who wouldn't want diverse landscapes... Thats just one example...
and then there are some new innovations not in FFXI.. like Chocobo's fighting with you and more Unique/untradeable than FFXI had
Its about balance
