Valentione's Day Items

I utterly despise the gender locked gear... 'you get the one (1) that matches your character's gender' and that's it. And surprise surprise, the dress is hideous. (Fair play to the gents, you finally get a decent set for once!) But good GRIEF... anyone who doesn't play the whispy waifu is SOL, eh? I mean, sure I play an au ra, but I think the dress is 'ick' and would rather the suit... and my viera alt wouldn't go near that dress with a 100ft pole? Can't we have a CHOICE in the matter?

Agreed. I play as female Highlander and dresses really don't work for this most of the time. I try to work with what the game gives me, but if there is any gear close to the this event's male gear (which is exactly what I was hoping to get for my character one day), it's locked behind higher level crafting classes. I was happy when my weaver reached 50, which was super fast with Ishgard restoration and while I'm fine with walking around as a weaver when I do smaller stuff, I'm unable to show off to Dungeons and farmings in the clothes I like the most.

In general, I think both gear options look neat and well designed, but dresses just aren't my kind of thing and every time there's an event with gender-locked gear, I know, I won't like the option for my character. I already tried playing as different characters, but female Highlander is what I feel the most comfortable with. Now only if the clothes would match.
Anyway, I'll pick the blue option. Mainly because blue is my favourite colour.

I mean, astrid's gonna win not just because she's the only girl, but she's also the only one they seem to have put effort into, the other 2 look like generic NPCS xD

The red design makes me think of something akin to what Harley Quinn wears.

Cool.I can become velvet room’s attendant with this blue outfit.

Like others have said, it won't happen because of how character models are with fashions. I don't think there are many heels that work with bare legs where there is no dyed cloth part at the top part of the shoe. The princess heels are one of them.

And it is pretty much a certainty Astrid is going to win. She is known and female, unless the other two are REALLY appealing in the game somehow.

What I wish they had done (aside from letting us actually wear these items) is if they were going to have 3 variants to make them unique instead of just recolors of something we can dye anyway.

Like if they had 3 vests, make it:

• Vest with long sleeves
• Vest with short sleeves
• Vest with rolled up sleeves ♥

And have dresses of varying lengths so if certain races look better in short/long they have options.

I already know their team is cowards when it comes to letting men wear dresses or anything remotely feminine, but I really question their judgment for not recognizing how good female characters would look in those vests.

Hopefully those who feel strongly about the issue decide to vote with their wallets and take their leave of the game altogether. That'd be a better way of reinforcing their chosen stance instead of trying to guilt trip the development team with deceptive and horrific accusations when things do not go their way.

The added benefit, of course, is that we don't have to see the storm in a teacup surrounding gender locked gear each time the development team dare to throw a bone towards traditional aesthetics/gender norms - something which is still very popular outside of the biased social media bubble.

Please stop gender locking seasonal/ANY gear.

Let the gents have dresses, let the gals have shirts. After this many years, it's more than time to do away with the gender-restriction-on-gear thing.

The new developer blog post says that we can buy the opposite-gender gear from the seasonal shop if we want it. So no worries about retainers and squads and such.

Devs make the most high-effort event in the last year and everyone whines about not being able to play with their little dress-up dolls.

Honestly it never fails when we have an event with no glamour people get upset, and when we do people here still complain. If you don't like the outfits then don't do the content.

I would rather see people do that actually, stop complaining on the forums and quit if its really that bad. I feel going out their way to always make sure you can wear gear on both genders isn't that big of a deal. Representation matters yes, but Playable Content>Cosmetics. This is how its always been, thats how its always going to be.

That being said I'll say this, What would you rather have? Hair and Glams to wear, but no content to do, or would you rather have content to play and have them take their time on cosmetics?

What a lot of people in this community need to realize is that just because you don't like content and dont indulge doesnt mean its bad or a lack there of, Its still content that the community at large does. If you can only think about yourself and how mad you're getting over a glam, when the Dev team is already working themselves to the bone, then you need to get over yourself.

Yes, because the same people that work on creating costumes for the seasonal events are the same ones who work on creating the next Ultimate...

Gents got the 2B dress and I have seen like 2 male characters wear it. I have seen zero guys wear the bunny costume since ShB launched. Why exactly does a 1% minority need the same amount of glamour as normal people? It takes resources and we probably wouldn't get two versions of an outfit. We didn't get a masculine counterpart for the level 1 cosmetic 2B set, for example.

So people who would love to have the other outfit for their character because it would look better on them should vote with their wallet and leave the game..hmm I hope that those saying that will remember such a thing when they accuse the devs again about females getting better glamours and posting about it. Because in the end both are topics just about glamour. But I guess as soon as its about people wanting the male options for their females, they are the bad guys..

Yeah, I see both sides of this.

Like, I KNOW the reason I'd like for items to not be gender-restricted is because I play a female. I would LOVE to have the choice between a dress and that spiffy vest. But asking for that is laterally asking them to work twice as hard on this event gear by making 2 outfits that everyone can wear. And really, how many male characters are ever gonna go for the dress?

Then there's the issue with the 2B outfit cases. Like, people can go "YAY, progress!" all they want for getting a crossplay glam for guys but ... what about the vast majority of male players&characters who have no interest in their character wearing a 2B dress? I've legit seen people upon release of the raid talk about how they rolled on it expecting to get some cool male version of 2B glam only to find that they have a crossplay and ended up being very let down by it cause they would never wear that. Like with this event, if they just made a dress that both genders could wear then yay ... right? But what about people who don't want to dress their dude up in a dress? Nothing that appeals to them?


I feel like this is something better done on the side. Like, data-miners know that they have worked on unrestricting a number of currently restricted glams that they just haven't unlocked yet so perhaps they're having a side team work on it or it's just really low on their list.

I don't get the point in having three different colors when they all look exacly the same outside of dye and they are dyeable lol

Honestly idk, the actual raid jobs function similarly as a cool variants of the outfits based on 9S for guys, and I feel like the coffer at the end will get equivalents for other Automata characters in the following parts of the raids. I mean the 2B dress is great but I really prefer having 9S' outfit as a girl, it doesn't really bug me cause lots of friends with both male and female characters are having a good time with it to this day, and I'm fairly certain I'll get what I want in the 2nd or 3rd parts of the raid. *shrugs*

I understand having this special drop be ultimately useless to you stinks but not everything will work for you, there's tons of rarely used pieces of glam items and gear that are also gender restricted.

Like, say there simply wasn't a coffer at the end ... sure, all the female gear is based on 2B but people would still be asking for the direct 1:1 2B glam. And though I also assumed that we would get 9S glam for the next part there's no guarantee of that. This whole raid is unprecedented (never have we even had dye-able 24 men raid gear or even a special glam coffer for example)
This coffer drop might just be a 1 time deal to please everyone who wanted 2B glam by putting it in the raid people will have to run more than any other (to better the chances of everyone getting it) with the next raid being a mount in place of the coffer and the one after that being a 2B hair style. OR they could make other iconic females glams like A2.

Anyway, my point was that this is a fairly uneven issue.
Gendered versions of gear is there to appease as many as possible. So I see unrestricting them as something that could and should be worked on in the background as opposed to doing twice the work at the time of release OR having a 2B glam problem with events where a clearly female glam leaves a large portion of dude characters thinking they got nothing.

I like the dress and hat. I think the set looks better in darker colors where the contrast isn't that strong.

But the pieces may be a little hard to combine with others because the dark parts of it look like dark brown instead of black, and most other pieces tend to have actual black details. But we'll see when we get it.

I would also like it if they finally made it so that shoes aren't a part of the tights anymore. You can't really wear shoes like that with anything but the tights that belong to them...
If tights would cover the feet and the shoes were without the socks it would be so, so, so much better. You could finally combine tights/stockings with the princess/socialite/bunny shoes and so on.

While I like the dress, I don't see my character wearing it( she would prefer a vest in this case definitely). So I support the idea of gender-unlocking both the dress and the vest. Players should have a choice of what to wear.

Yes. You are the litmus test we should base this off of. You obviously can see how many players use parts like the 2B boots or enjoy parts of the Bunny Suit or just enjoy the aspect or idea of having more variety... OF COURSE. That's exactly how minority statistics work. Yup. (For the record... I have seen lots. But everyone has different experiences, there are a LOT of players. *jazzhands* )

And the whole 'the set you take automatically switches to the gender your character is' is also... terrible. They just need to step away from gender-locking sets of gear completely. Honestly. People need to stop making it their business what other people want their character model to wear, wear what you want your character model to, and get on with it. It isn't hard. 'Mind yo business' and let people enjoy things, first of all... and follow through with earlier interviews of being less restrictive of the gear. It isn't hard.

What exactly is wrong with the dress? I see all this backlach and vouching for the suit, yet the dress itself anywhere near as bad as people are saying that it is. I actually like the way it looks. I have a feminine highlander, so this will be perfect for her. It's very similar to the Thavnairain Wool dress in terms of length. Here's another question: Does this community have an issue with femininity? I don't mean slutty or revealing outfits, like DNC artifact gear. I mean dresses, like the Far Eastern Matriarch. I just see far more requests for making the suit unisex and anything feminine is "reinforcing gendered stereotypes." And so what if they don't make it unisex? The males get something cool for a change. It's so ironic that this community bemoaned that males don't get cool glams (which they do), and when something like this comes along, it must be made unisex.

I was a Roe for over two years. True, glam is harder for them, but you can make a feminine Roe if you used the right pieces. I have two highlanders and one of them is quite feminine. People can make characters anyway they want. But I've noticed people tend to make butch Roes and Highlanders, because it's easier to make them that way. Highlander is no less feminine than a Viera

Har har, I have commented on and voiced my dislike of Gender-locked outfits FAR before this event. But niiiiiice try. It's far from the just this. You can't try to invalidate my opinion or comments just because of that, but nice TRY.

And no, this community doesn't have an 'issue with femininity'? People would just like there to be freedom in how they are allowed to express themselves in their game and their avatars of choice. That's their business. Yoshida has expressed a desire to open things up on that front and people hoped that would happen more. And people are allowed to say so. People are also allowed to have different tastes and opinions therein, including on this dress/suit combo. Not everyone likes it, some do. Not everyone loves the harlequin look, and the fact that the parts of it would be tricky to use in other glamours.

As a person who wears the YoRHa Casting dress 90% of the time at the moment, no, I don't have an issue with femininity, or the dress for that matter. I just don't think my character would wear a dress like that. I feel like it's more of a playful/ outgoing/ heart-on-their-sleeve character's style, which is something my character isn't. This was never about femininity, this was about freedom of choice and ability to dress as whatever one likes, no matter the gender. And yes, I believe males should be allowed to wear the dress too. Besides, Yoshi promised us to remove the genderlocks on clothing, yet not only they make the YoRHa gear the way it is( aka clothing item changing depending on the gender), but now also this.

Making clothes for both genders would take extra resources. Considering that the vast majority of males want to dress like males, and that resources aren't unlimited, I can see why they wouldn't consider spending extra work and money on such a thing.

There are still many feminine pieces that males can use, way more than lolita fashion pieces I can use myself. I simply understand that I'm a minority and my personal priorities (lolita fashion) shouldn't be demanded.

I bring this up, because a lot of point of contention about glam stems from female clothing. Just a few months ago, there was vitriol over female characters getting two female glams back to back on mog station. And then it's this; people acting as if the dress is horrible when it's not and that the male is vastly better, when that's completely subjective. I've never seen male clothing hated, before it even has the chance to be released. But I digress.

Simply enough, I just don't think it's a very nice dress.

I certainly have no issue with feminity (besides the game's tendency to equate it with "make the outfit more revealing") - most of Aurelie's outfits are dresses and skirts, and I love it when I find things that work for my Roegadyn alt.

The Valentione's dress just looks awkward to me. Particularly, the skirt looks incredibly stiff - more like a flat cone than a fabric skirt.

Compare the Thavnairian wool dress (which is actually nowhere near the Valentione's dress in terms of length, but does have a similar construction with stitched ruffles along the lower hem). Look at the texture of it - the small folds and gathers across the fabric. The Valentione's dress doesn't seem to have any of that - just a flat colour, suggesting a very stiff skirt or supporting petticoat. It also makes it look somewhat cartoony.

The patterned tights are going to be hard to find other uses for, at least for me. I'd rather have plain ones.

And I'm just not keen on the top. I don't like the sleeveless look, and it's just... not quite right. I think it reminds me of an apron more than a dress.

Meanwhile, the male version is just nice. It's something you could use in more situations, and it looks stylish.

Personally, I would have liked to get a more feminine version of the waistcoat - more of a blouse maybe, with gathered sleeves, more ornate collar/cuffs and a bow at the neck instead of the tie. Keep the tights, add a nicer skirt (maybe a less-vanishing version of the Quaintrelle's?). I guess the problem would be whether to attach the skirt to the blouse or to the tights - or give two versions of the tights with/without skirt, but then it wouldn't be "fair" that the guys only get one set of pants. But that's another slippery business...

The NieR raids aren't over yet, so we can't say for sure that we don't get a unisex masculine counterpart to the 2B set until we've seen everything that's planned to be released.

On the broader question of whether anyone is actually using the 2B dress or bunny suit... I've seen a few people use it, but more importantly I've seen people wearing pieces of the outfit more often than the whole thing. Would you notice if a male character was just wearing the rabbit ears, or the plain cloth wristbands, or 2B's boots?

In some ways yes, it does mean a disproportionate amount of effort is being put into adapting the core outfits for a small number of people who would wear them, and personally I would love to see more adapted designs instead of transferring the female version straight over, but they're in an awkward position when a lot of people do want the male outfits for their female characters but a lot less want the female outfits for male characters.

Do they take the previous approach of only making the "male" costume unisex while not putting the resources into modelling the counterpart female costume for male characters? (Resource-efficient but leads to people complaining that female characters get more outfits.) Or do they keep the number of outfits balanced with a "both or neither" approach to unisex outfits, regardless of how many people would actually use it?

It also depends what sort of time they are putting into the adaptation work. Are they being assigned it as something to be prepared on a deadline with a planned release date, or is it a background task that they pick up on the occasions when they've finished everything else they had to do (or can currently do) to keep on the current production schedule?

I think you may find there are a small number of people here who repeat their complaint about male-female outfit balance every time it happens, while overlooking things like there being a logical reason to release unisex-male exclusive-female pairs (as discussed above) - and overlooking things like getting new male hairstyles for free while new female hairstyles are locked behind Eureka/HoH.

(Personally, when you have to pay for the outfits I don't see the balance being anywhere near as important as it is for free ones within the game. Though I do find it disappointing that Y'shtola got a new outfit for Shadowbringers - which you know is going to end up on Mog Station - while Thancred and Urianger only got recycled relic gear, which probably won't be sold. That's more of a character-fairness thing as far as I'm concerned, but it's how we end up with the "more female than male NPC outfits on Mog Station" imbalance in the first place, when they put more priority into designing outfits for female NPCs.)

I have definitely seen "male clothing hated" though - there's not enough of it, or it's too feminine when we get it. There was a post a while back complaining that the Adventuring Sweater and Spring Shirt only looked good on female characters (they don't). There were complaints about the Boulevardier set - somewhat justified with dear goodness those ruffled shorts but it's not like you're required to wear the full set, and we already have other pants to combine with the shirt. They're even salvageable if you wear them with long boots so they tuck in, and I've occasionally seen people wearing them as-is - usually Lalafells, but still.

Personally I think we have lots of unisex stuff that looks better on male characters, but that seems to be overlooked in favour of just counting up the numbers of how many unique items each gender gets.

So wait, to be "feminine" (stupid word) you have to wear ribbons and lace and hearts? If so, I've been doing real life wrong as well, and so have most people.
There's a different between not being "feminine" (whatever that means) and not wanting to dress up like a kitsch porcelain doll.

My character has been exclusively femroe since day one. I will be rocking this dress the day the event drops.

Sure, I'd say I don't personally like how so-n-so tops looks on her ... but with some thought, good matching and color theory I can make a number of cute looks using cute tops. It's all subjective really.

As for this dress I can't say much about it til I see it in game.

I was a Roe for over two years. True, glam is harder for them, but you can make a feminine Roe if you used the right pieces. I have two highlanders and one of them is quite feminine. People can make characters anyway they want. But I've noticed people tend to make butch Roes and Highlanders, because it's easier to make them that way. Highlander is no more less feminine than a Viera

Part of my dislike for the dress is how it's going to hang on a femroe over how the vest will look. If you look at like, the princess dress, or any big skirt'ed armor, they've rigged the armor model REALLY high on the waist compared to other races.

Which leaves Roe's rocking a maternity dress look when all it needs, is to be like three of four comparative inches lower on the torso. The way this thing is now, it's going to be a circus tent.

I'd even just take the top as a separate piece without the skirt attached, if I couldn't get the vest, but that skirt is going to be a lalafel wedding chapel on femroes.
