Those low prices on the market board...

My new goal is to cut out any profits my competitors have completely by calculating the absolute lowest I can make profits off and when profits cease to be a thing, pull out of the market and wait for it to recover while competitors are undercutting at a loss.

Will say that the buyers market has never been better. Everything is being undercut to almost cost price level which removes incentive to craft. Perhaps we need a new way to convert crafted gear into gil directly to stimulate the economy a bit?

From the buyers perspective what he is doing only helps them. Its the other crafters who are being screwed, buyers will love having low prices.

If you need to tank it for it to sell after someone undercutted you for 1 gil, then you were already taking players with little gil for all they're worth in the first place anyway (aka you were selling the item for far beyond its worth).

It's logic to assume you were being a bit too greedy there. Then you tank it not to help move it or to allow players to afford it, but to "make it unprofitible"

The issue here is a lot of people don't understand that if you relist an item at the same price as the previous top of the list your item will be the new top of the list hence they undercut by a gil or more.

Another thing many buyers/sellers don't understand is market board tax rates and how much the taxes can add up over multiple purchases. I will buy from whoever has their retainers in Limsa before anywhere else because it has the easiest to access market boards. I have also set my retainers to be located from Limsa since most of my customers are there improving the chances that they'll purchase from my retainers over the retainer in Gridania or Kugane.

I've not seen my items shift to the top just be relisting them. If this is how it's supposed to work, it's not doing so consistently. When I list for 1gil less, it does shift my items up.

As for the taxes part, I've been considering moving my retainers to limsa for a while. I hadn't considered the taxes this deeply, but this is a good reason for me to do this tonight when I get home.

+1 for undercut the hell out of people who undercut by 1 gil. If you want your item listed at the top, offer the buyers an actual better deal than I am.

The rage over 1 gil undercuts baffles me, because it's among the most courteous, generous behavior towards the fellow seller that you'll see on the MB.
A 1 gil undercut is meaningless if the buyer is in a different location to your retainers market. If your retainer is an Ul'dah seller and the buyer is in Limsa, they'll most likely buy items from a Limsa seller and ignore your 1 gil cheaper in order to save significantly more in tax. Sure, some players don't understand tax, but in general someone undercutting you by 1 gil still allows you a reasonable chance to sell your item first.

Now, a seller like me will undercut you just out of tax range and guarantee to bump your chances of a sale first to 0% and I'll draw no rage because I'm undercutting by a "fair" 1-5k or whatever. I don't get it.

I've found if you are listing a new item at the same price as the previous retainer e.g. Retainer A selling an item at 9000 gil and Retainer B lists the same item at 9000 gil then Retainer B will replace Retainer A as the top of the MB list but at the same gil price. However if Retainer A and tried to re-list the item at the same price it won't move their position on the MB at all and they would need to completely remove the listing off the MB and re-list again to replace Retainer B at top of the list at the same gil price.

Most players undercut by 1 gil or more which avoids this situation though. I personally undercut by 1 gil at a time since its the easiest thing to do since you can use the + and - symbols on the right side which is faster than typing in something.

When items that for years have been selling, and selling briskly, at 200-600k are now being sold for 20-40k, and in a lot of cases, less than vendor price, the economy is broke.
And for "maybe you're selling the wrong items".
It's right across the board on everything.
The only things not selling for next to nothing are items bought from the mog station that no one buys anyway.
(30 million for a pink tree anyone?)

Thats only true on items where the tax is a meaningful amount. Tax on low cost stuff isnt worth the time it takes to zone around, especially if its in a city that doesnt allow world hopping.

If I'm mass buying anything cross world, the odds I'll ever waste any time zoning out of lagsa lower decks is 0 unless the tax starts hitting tens of thousands of gil.

IMO, no one should overthink FFXIV economy, it doesnt follow real life logic. example a lumber that need 4 logs to craft, sold for the price of 2 logs.
then you said, why not just sell the logs instead of the lumber?
the answer is exp point, i assume some people just mindlessly grind the shit out of their crafter and sold the excess for really cheap. they got exp, and also got some of their money back, for some people this already worth it.

sometimes there is also a condition where there is more seller than buyer for a certain item at a certain time, and this will make the price crash. this happens a lot.

Actually there are several answers. The logs might be used elsewhere. There might have been a buyout leaving only higher priced logs. Also possibly gatherers just haven't been gathering the logs and nobody's been using the lumber. Or rabid undercut wars racing to the bottom.

Flip side, might be harder to sell logs than lumber. People might be mid project and buy one lumber to finish it 'now' over logs they have to put their own shards/crystals/clusters into.

Not really. It's because they made crafting a complete joke. That's the only reason stuff has become so cheap. Well, that and bots.

The thing that annoys me is how drastic the price has dropped for certain crafting matts. Leather, Lumber, Ingots and Nuggets etc.... Pre-5.1 an Aurum Regis nugget (lvl 60 mat) sold for about 5-8k NQ, because they had to be crafted. Now you can desynth them for free from lvl 60 gear without even having a level 60 crafter (i think) the prices have been drastically flutuating between 4k....and 250 gil. Its ridiculous how much people undervalue stuff just because the supply is suddenly increased, especially how it reflects HQ prices despite HQ not being very common at all from desynth. If something is selling for 5k, sell it for 5k, dont just shrug and put it up at 250 gil and crash the market just because you happened to get it from a desynth, and have no use for it yourself.

The new desynth has definitely dropped prices across the board.
You pick up a lot more crap gear than you realize when doing roulette's, most people don't have desynth leveled or didn't have the right ones leveled so it would just be tossed at your CG for seals, but it's not like there's anything of particularly high value you can buy with company seals, many just leave their seals capped out cause whaddamigonnadowithem.
So now everyone is desynthing everything.
Whatever you get can't be worth much less than the seals, right?

I agree with you on this, I feel like it was a waste of time and gil to level Weaver, leatherworker and Goldsmith desynth up.

Now that everyone can desynth, the market is crashed and items that makes gil is the crafts with the most complex items to make that has to be HQ, it's just very rare items like the dark night Pegasus whistle

All those crafting mats you get from desynth, you might as well give them to the doman enclave and get some decent gil

I think this every time I see either of these things. Why do people undercut so much? Do they not want to make money? Do they not care about making a good chunk of change and just want to get rid of the item as fast as possible?

Honestly, I undercut all the time, but its by like 1-5 gil, just because I know if someone comes along looking for that item, they are going to buy the cheapest one by default, even if its 1 gil less than the next one. But I hate it when I go to my retainer a day later and go to adjust the price of my items, only to see that I am not going to make less than half what I could have made the day before if I want to competitively price my item again. And then of course there is, like you said, the times where now the item is selling for less than the vendor price. I either just leave the price of mine alone or go vendor mine in that situation.

I don't really understand the psychology of why people do these things.

Sad thing is that unless you actually use the mats you're desynthing (or just doing it for skillups), theres a LOT of stuff thats still just better to seal and sell the seal mats than try to sell the desynth product. Those years old "heres the stuff you can buy for seals that sell well" guides are still pretty relevant. Scheelite might be less useful now, but if it starts with 'Raziq', its annoying to get and probably sells better than any random nugget, lumber, ingot, or xcraft 2 materia.

By posting for 1 gill less you are saying, "get to the back of the line I am more important". You aren't establishing a new price point. You aren't trying to maximize profits.



Destroy probably means they are willing to go down to a price that makes you wonder why you even put up. I had a few items where someone kept posting for 1 gil less. So i just kept dropping it by 10k. They never sold their stuff and took all of them off MB. Lots of junk on MB is venture stuff anyways. So it was zero investment and just the few seconds to click retainer. Spent more work repricing junk then actually getting it.

This person wants to sell their items. You are going to be undercut no matter what. Why would you prefer that undercut to be huge and devalue your item, instead of a mere 1 gil that leaves you open to sales from any buyer in your retainers location?

What is point of getting mad if someone places item 1 gil below what selling yours for. If there retainer is not in same city selling item your in. It cost more than 1 gil to teleport to city its being sold in. For me if having to much junk and need to get rid of if fast I will list it for dirt cheap just make room for other stuff. Like sold other day bunch stuff for 2k when next lowest was 16k just to make room. Hardest part is got go to every server in world visit and look at there boards to get idea what sell items for.

There is no logical reason to be mad about the 1-gil undercutters. Doesn't change the fact that many people, myself included, hate 1-gil undercutters and will not buy from them. It's a psychological thing, not a logical thing, but it is a thing. Undercutting by massive amounts is of course just stupid, but there is a middle ground of reasonably lowering your price by small increments without being that guy that shoves his 1 gil in your face as if to say "yeah you like that, I beat you by one gil, what you gonna do about it?" Obviously they are probably not thinking that, but hot damn you feel like they are!

Actually some people don't undercut. I see listing for items where 6 people will all post at the same price. Some people play nice. I also think you over value people caring about tax that much. This game is pretty casual and I am not even sure most people remember tax per city. The tax is just too low.


So I should just suck it up and let that person walk all over me. They don't have enough gil for an item to drop 50k, they shouldn't be getting involved in it.

How is that not maximizing profits? You're ensuring your product is at the top with as little change in price as possible. It's also not a "I am more important" mentality. It's a "get my product seen first" mentality. Those are not the same thing.

Or, they waited until people stopped being children about the price and put it back up for the "maximized profit" price, is the far more likely scenario. Which means they caused you to lose money because you were throwing a tantrum about someone undercutting by 1gil. Sounds like they won, to me.

i dont think they really won. the only one who won is the customer. i bought cheap stuff from 3rd world server, and sell it for 300-500% profit in my own server. i dont even need time to gather it. the only thing i need to invest is analyzing other server MB, which i already done in the past. i can flood the board easily with certain mats if i want and cut everyone by half the price while making money. i got gil, people got cheaper stuff (not 1 gil cheaper lmao), while dominating the MB. such is the power of the great master race

^ There is that wonderful silent brotherhood feeling when placing your item at the seemingly fair lowest price and other sellers holding hands at that place (like when you jump for a ready check and everyone else jumps in response). Now it can happen where it's way over priced brotherhood which I know can be an "aw shucks" moment when you lose that, but that one doesn't really bother me. So I mean speaking strictly that "yeah that makes sense" price point that everyone holds hands around.

If there is a slow selling item and someone keeps undercutting me, especially after I match them rather than undercut them, and there isn't many or any other sellers... sometimes I purposefully crash the market because that just drives me bonkers. Or if I can get them to undercut me below average selling price to the point I can buy it from them and then sell it back at normal market value.. I'll do that too (which action to take depends on how fast the item sells and how much they keep undercutting by).

Kind of fun when you flip some good stuff but honestly more annoyance than joy for me- I see the market board as one of those necessary evils to making gil in the game, I wish I could just sell to an NPC that gave me a fair rate instead of the Gamestop trade in value.

Someone appeared to sell a roll for 1m, because the others were also 1m, but they missed a 0, and I bought it right away. How no one else caught that is a mystery.. I needed that roll too, so that's why I didnt decide to get a 900k profit.

I try to undercut by 1 gil as long as I can until I just get tired of it, then it starts going by hundreds, thousands, then several thousands, or I just let it sit at the price and wait indefinitely. Sometimes that works too!
