As a player who's never been reported, why aren't behavior penalties ever forgiven?

In hindsight, I feel really lucky that I didn't get any bad marks for messing with a DoL bot to see if I could break it somehow (Which among other things included trading with it when it tried to perform various actions and tagging mobs it was trying to farm), unknown to me that its owner was multi-boxing and monitoring it at the time and decided to report me instead of just asking me to stop or something simpler.

The GM basically just said "Don't do that anymore please" and left it at that. I did at least learn from the experience that the GMs are utterly useless at addressing cheaters and can only forward reports to the similarly unhelpful STF

I love when people say they're paranoid about talking to anyone because they're afraid of getting banned. The only reason for that is if you regularly say punishable things. I've gotten snippy and have been involved in some pretty heated conversations in-game and have never been punished or banned in any way. Not because I was lucky or that the system is faulty, but because I know the lines you're not supposed to cross.

It's pretty easy to tell the difference between an argument and saying something offensive. If you're afraid you'll get banned for talking, it's probably because you don't know the difference. Or you're one of those people that think if someone gets hurt it's their fault and not the fault of the person that said the hurtful thing.

But honestly, the fact that I've never been disciplined means you have to say or do some pretty blatantly awful things, and to that I say: If you were reprimanded twice like 4 years ago and then got in trouble again today, that doesn't tell me they shouldn't consider your past offenses in your punishment; it tells me it's been 4 years and you haven't learned your lesson. And a single "oops" or misunderstanding doesn't get you perma-banned.

I have never been banned, warned, or talked to by a GM either!

The only things I have ever seen action taken for against is sexual harassment, lewdity, and anything involving gil/RMT that's through the Party Find that isn't selling content. Such as wanting to exchange gil for a mog station fantasia.

Or it might just be that you were never reported by anyone? You're in the mercy of the other person's hands. You might believe you haven't said or done anything punishable, however it's entirely possible you have done something bannable and just have been talking to rather mature people up to this point who haven't felt it necessary to report.

Humans are emotional creatures and everyone has bad days, and some people are more prone to report minor offenses than others. All it takes is the wrong combination of things to get a penalty. It doesn't mean someone hasn't changed in four years, it means they're imperfect and make mistakes just like everyone else, even if they're years apart. Just because you haven't been penalized doesn't mean your own behavior is unreportable, either. That's really the issue. Three misunderstandings over the lifespan of the game do, in fact, get you permabanned. It seems like you're being dismissive because it hasn't been a problem for you personally.

So you're actually implying being reprimanded at least twice is a common occurrence? I've never been banned in any online game in my life. Not for cheating, not for harassment, etc., and you're telling me that's the exception, not the rule? If people are so willy-nilly about breaking rules set by the people who make the game, then the punishment is probably warranted. You don't "oops" your way into a perma-ban. Three-strike rules are specifically for so you don't just get perma-banned from a mistake or a misunderstanding. It gives you time to maybe reconsider your behavior. I have serious doubts that someone who gets in trouble 3 times is completely innocent. And it's absolutely possible to never reach a point where a misunderstanding would be your third strike.

All you're telling me is that the whole "wah I'm gonna get banned because of a special snowflake :c" thing is a total farce. And that people don't go around reporting people who simply say "hello".

Well maybe not like that, b/c I'm sure most feel that pestering a GM with obvious spam will have negative consequences to themselves.
But s/o could report you quite easily if you have a rather serious discussion about player performance. Esp when the feathers are ruffled, even normal, non evaluative language may be taken as offense. I've seen it happen merely from posting the mathematical fact of a log entry (w/o ANY comment from me, because it was self explanatory) in WoW. No GM was involved but I got asked to refrain from addressing these things publicly by the guilds management.

At that point: yeah, you are totally at the mercy of the GM.

Putting stuff like "unilateral dismissal of anothers opinion" as a bannable offense in your ToS gives them the theoretical room to ban you for virtually EVERY disagreement with another player, no matter the language involved.

Personally I've never been contacted by a GM due to misconduct in 12yrs of MMO play. I'm sure making Baguette jokes to french players would be bannable though, should I meet one w/o a sense of humor.

These are probably the same people who think that it’s normal for someone to have been arrested before. Just think about how many of those people there are, and it will explain everything.

But that's the issue, it's also possible to reach that point. That in and of itself is the problem. It puts too much control in the hands of the small minority that will report misunderstandings, or things that seem like misunderstandings to outside observers, as though they were grievous attacks. I mean, you're telling me that no one has ever successfully reported another player as an act of vengeance, with ill intent? Are you saying that it can't happen more that once? (Even considering the person who's been reported has already made enemies who would do such a thing?) Why do you think all reports should be permanent, forever, if the system can be abused at all?

Tell me what would be so bad about something like a rolling forgiveness period, to provide a buffer for longtime fans due to the flaws in the system.

Kind reminder, I've never been penalized once. I just think people who have shouldn't forever be at risk of losing hundreds of dollars and hours and friends if they upset the wrong people.

I agree that it is illogical that there is no expiration date for offenses.
We have these IRL for real stuff that harms real people.

To not have these "statutes of limitation" in a video game (I know, sacrilege to refer to it like that, I'll chastise myself later) is beyond absurd.

I think that's how they see it sadly. It's a video game therefore it shouldn't be an issue in the first place. Therefore because it's a video game, they'd ban and tell you that you can play something else. Your behavior isn't welcomed on this video game. Because it's just a game there shouldn't be feelings and opinions in the first place. It's just a game. It's always just a game. Which is also why some people get banned in the first place. They behave immaturely because it's just a game. The phrase, it's just a game is such a vague double edge sword it hurts.

To be blunt: the worst I can do is fling ASCII signs at another's chat who can block me with a push of a button.
Nothing warrants permanent exclusion. Bans should top out at 6 Months unless you do really nasty stuff like stalking, IRL threats etc.

Being permabanned for simply losing your temper in a heated discussion (which can happen to the best of us) is way overkill.

I agree. Sadly the GMs do not. I got temporally banned once for posting a meme that said Oh great not this discussion again. The email said it was because it contributed nothing relevant to the conversation and now that strike follows me for the rest of my life.

Infact, every time you use a swear word no matter the context, you can be reported for inappropriate language. I was banned for saying something not relevant to the topic of the discussion that was being held in chat. Thus referred to as griefing and instigating/inflaming.

The ToS seems at first glance like the perfect White Knights' paradise -- say nothing negative as it can be an "Expressions that significantly lack consideration for another person", "Expressions that unilaterally reject another person's opinion" or "Expressions that any reasonable person would find offensive" and fake instead being goody-goody. People nowadays get offended at literally ANYTHING, justified or not.

Oh it get's worse than that.

I had a friend get GM jailed because their girlfriend ERP cheated on them in-game and he blew up cussing her and the guy she cheated with. The guy she cheated on with thought the boyfriend was being immature and reported him for harassment and telling him how to play his game. Needless to say, the guy who was cheated on got in trouble and the GM told him the mature thing to do would had been to just silently block both.

Uh... how is that worse? Guy cusses someone out and gets reported, but you just glossed over what he did to deserve it. It doesn’t matter why he did it - it was perfectly justified to ban him.

That’s why I have a REALLY hard time taking these posts seriously. There’s always more to the story or some convenient detail left out or glossed over. Everyone likes to think that they/their friends are perfectly innocent.

I personally think there needs to be some kind of appeal process. where you get to tell your side and then maybe a group of 3 make a final ruling or something. the power given to gm's mods is that of a judge appointed for life, so u get bad ones and it screws over the truth to the whim of one person who, them selves may be acting incorrectly. just my .02

I'm not gonna pretend to know who was and wasn't in the right. It's their business not mind. But if they were cheated on, I think it's a perfectly normal reaction that the person cheated on is going to throw an emotional reaction. You can't really expect someone to maintain their cool in a situation where they felt betrayed by a loved one.

To answer your question why it's worse. Wouldn't you feel like garbage if your loved one cheated on you, then in the heat of the episode the person she cheated on with reported you for having a perfectly expected emotional break down to it? You just lost your loved one and got a strike on your account. Anyone would find that humiliatingly insulting. Yeah there is probably more to the story but cheating is cheating and cussing is cussing. Can't really break it down more than that.

Anyway that's all I'm gonna say on the topic. This isn't the topic or the place for something sensitive and personal that could be found subjective to be discussed.

I think they could have controlled themselves and thrown a tantrum on discord, kept it out of the game, or "silently blocked both". For that matter "loved one"? Are we talking about an internet "gf" who had some "ERP" session? I don't think this equates to "cheating". I mean, are we on the same plane of existence here? The GM was completely right in this. The game is definitely not the place for a personal dispute.

I think you're reading a bit to deeply into what I said and are exaggerating it a bit.

So far the last two posts, the only points you have both managed to make is "It's just a game so forget other people's feelings and emotions. They aren't expected to have any and if they do that's their problem. Carry on~"


The one person cheated. The other yelled and cussed. Based on this information both are guilty, both are wrong. You can't justify either. Not really much reason to press for anymore detail.

So yelling at them over discord is suddenly more appropriate? By your choice of words you act as if it's an online relationship it's moot. The point is, it don't matter. If that is the rules of their relationship and they're violated then they need to discuss it. If they talk in-game or discord, it does not matter. This isn't Japan where showing (too much) emotion in the open is considered as negative, outside of the fictional world. Heck, were talking about a game world. Besides, people can still be "responible members of society" and display (negative) emotions. We are no robots with a 1 or 0 binary mindset, clearly seperated from the other with no chance of interferance. While such topics do indeed belong to a private communication plattform another - more sensible- solution could also have been to simply warn the person and tell them to resolve it outside of the game. That instant punishement crap is like killing a fly with a shotgut.

This thread is about the enforcement of the ToS of the game. In that context, taking the dispute elsewhere, out of the game, would have, yes, been more appropriate. If you start cussing and starting arguments in-game over some personal dispute, are you really surprised when a GM takes notice and takes action? I mean c'mon here. "Rules of the relationship" has literally nothing to do with the conversation here. You are going to tell me the GM is supposed to take in account that some guy's internet GF "cheated" on him through in game roleplay and they are supposed to throw the enforcement of their ToS out the window because it's a passionate moment for them? Give me a break.

Also, for that matter, having "rules" for a relationship is never gonna end well.

Anyway I'm not going to response anymore because I do agree the GM did what they felt they needed to do and that they don't really have much choice in the game. But I still stand by what I said.

As someone who was in a RP relationship that basically got nuked because my counterpart had to switch servers (raidgroup and all that jazz), trust me, feelings can run quite deep if you let them. So I can understand the feelings of jealousy and betrayal.

I was surprised myself how hard it hit me when he transferred, didn't expect that from a bit of role play fun. Oo
I definitely learned from it and took precautions for future RP endeavors.

No clue, but not so long ago the made the ToS even stricter and you can pretty much get reported for just sneezing now.


Basically what I do is just don't talk at all any more in the game (except for the FC and my static LS), and I go on the sh*tpost ffxiv subreddit instead, you can meme and joke around as much as you like without having to fear bans.
Also a nice bonus on there is that there are no 'special snowflakes'.

This right here strikes right on the head of the nail. No one I have been playing with in my to and from playing since ARR release have ever had GM action taken against them, and some of them can be quite colorful individuals at times, and the only times I have seen action taken against people were when they were saying very very rude stuff I don't want to say in this forum or spoke too loudly about their usage of certain mods that are against the ToS. Some people think that if they just look the wrong way towards people they can get banned. If your vocabulary towards people includes slurs or excessive use of the F word and you think it is odd that you get banned, then maybe it is time to take off those internet tough guy pants. My philosophy is to speak towards people online in the same way I would speak to people IRL as there is still a person on the other side of that screen.

I had no idea they had such a strict enforcement system. Three strikes of any kind *ever* and you're permabanned? Holy crap, that's insane. Is that really how it is?

Yes and while I would love to give the benefit of the doubt and believe that GMs are infallible. I know that they are not. I have seen GM's misuse their power before in other games and have personally gotten one banned/fired for it. So all it takes is for one GM to have a bad day, one that doesn't like you for whatever personal reason, or simply bad luck of taking something out of context.

I've been playing MMOs for 20 years now, started with EQ. I have never been banned. And only had ONE suspension on a WoW account. In that case I had stopped playing a year and a half before the suspension. Somehow the account got hacked and I got a notice it was suspended for suspicious activity. I contacted Blizzard, explained to them that I hadn't logged in over a year. They were able to confirm it, rolled back the account to before anything was lost. And they 'regrettably' said that the expansion added to the account while it was compromised would remain, with a wink. And of course no strike or penalty assessed to the account.

With how people have been treated before, I'm not so sure you'd see the same treatment from SE. We're walking on eggshells.

And even though I've never been actioned in a game before. These rules are so strict and so ambiguous, that it makes me honestly nervous.

That's how I feel. And for me, there's the added complication that I roleplay. I mean, the ToS says "don't curse at anyone," it doesn't say "don't curse at anyone unless you're roleplaying." And it's kind of hard to write a situation with any gravity if the characters involved can't use bad words like adults. Even NPCs curse, and in pretty colorful ways.

Lots of roleplayers say that a GM surely would understand that it's just RP. But after the whole "penalized for a vulgar FC slogan inherited by an unused alt" thing, I no longer believe that.

It would all be okay if strikes were ever forgiven. But if a vengeful bystander can report me for writing a foul-mouthed desert monk miqo'te and get me marked for life if the wrong GM handles it, putting all the hours and dollars and friends I have in the game at risk, then...
