Just don't go to Melmond. 170-200 at JP prime time= server will be deleted upon merge, and there's very little LS loyalty - most people have like 5 different linkshells and those 5 linkshells have the same people in each lol...

I'd say far more people on Selbina played xi than didn't play xi. I can think of only one in my linkshell. I've seen a few characters running around with bismark as their second name I think so it may even be you will run into some old friends here as well as make some new ones. Nobody shouts for a social linkshell for more than a few seconds without offers here so give that a try. People here are friendly too, just yesterday a new player was asking for help finding stuff in uldah and soon had three different players chasing around town helping her. I rerolled here from Besaid a few weeks after the servers opened and I really like it here on Selbina.
I almost put Bismarck as my last name and since i'm only 20 I might delete it and rename it modz bismarck lol idk yet. I like the Bismarck idea, HAIL BISMARCK ha... Anyhow I do appriciate all the information and feedback I really do and I will do what everyone suggested and give it a little more time.
Again my IGN atm is Modz Mcgee feel free to send a /tell or friend request sometime. If I decide to make another toon i'll probably keep modz mcgee as my secondary / mule. lol it only took me a full day to hit lvl20 solo and i messed around a good part of that day. So it's not a big deal to start another one with Bismarck as my last lol.
btw hows the maint update times? Are they like ffxi old school where you never really know when they would be up and going again or are they more accurate with the time frames of when the servers will be back up and running again?
Thanks, I seen the area you are referring to and you're right but ugh, I just don't and never have liked those type of maps/zones in any game. During my first 2 days on Selbina I soloed to 20, did very little crafting and decided to do some exploring. IDK but every mmo I always seem to want to explore area's and or find things including but not limited to bugs and or map glitches lol... I don't do it to cheat I do it more or less when I'm bored and want to find something interesting i guess idk.

I have yet to find any game that I was not able to find glitches in. I am not talking about glitches everyone knows about, I am talking about glitches that I randomly find. and NO I do not exploit them and or use them for w/e reasons. Whenever I randomly stumble onto one I kind of laugh and as long as it's not something destructive or could harm the economy of the game then ill normally tell my friends to check it out. Most of the time it's graphic or map glitches and or funny little Easter eggs.
so in about a hour and half huh?
I keep hearing Besaid has some funny/friendly events going on all the time ( as in almost daily ) and I have seen some of the videos lol. Is this something that happens often or just randomly with random ls's i wonder?
Join Lindblum, roll a Lalafell toon, join Lalapalooza LS, have fun.
Definitely stick it out. I'm on Selbina and certainly get nostalgic all the time.
I see you're only CNJ20, you should be getting actual EXP parties soon enough, they usually start (and get fun) after 25. Stick it out a little bit and then make a decision. Selbina certainly isn't dead, too. You're joining near the end of the patch cycle which means lower populations on all servers. The end of February brings 1.21 and with it a large number of returning players.
Yeah I decided to try out a mage type class CNJ/THM or vise verse due to my first job on ffxi I maxed was RDM... ohhh man did I ever have some fun on my RDM back then. I literally used to have vidoes of me soloing things that people BET me that I couldn't do. So I figured with how the classes were set up and the game mechanics main job/sub job type thing that I could sort of put together a RDM type of class, yea i know ill have to level a melee class to make it more like rdm. As long as the things are balanced I always liked battle mages. BLU was another one of my favs for some reason.
Anyhow I eventually ended up maxing out most jobs including melee and really liked it, and went with melee on some other games that didnt have RDM/Druid type jobs and started really liking melee roles more and more. So idk yet what ill end up liking the best and with how much the game is changing at any given time I may never actually know what ill like until 2.0. So ill do what everyone else is doing and ill try out each one until 20 or even 50 and see which I like best i suppose. I am more of a team player, ill level w/e jobs are needed the most for w/e group of friends or ls needs them (even if i don't like the job much)...
lol it's crazy how easy it is to solo on this game compared to old school ffxi. Man I remember at one time beast master was more or less the only solo job. Sure you could of with other jobs but ugh it would take forever and just not worth the time. Like mentioned before I heard they made it a little more solo friendly but I stopped right before they added in that stuff. Literally RIGHT before.
The patch is done down lding but still wont let me on my toons, anyone else having trouble?
Like I said though ill level w/e is needed for w/e group of buddies or ls I am with at the time. IDK why but I always been that way. I guess I just like to be useful and or help. But I still want to try and put together some sort of RDM type job if at all possible. Might end up failing and or not being of any value but I am the type to try and try I shall lol.
Thanks ^_^
To modz and setsua: There's 26 more minutes of maintenance time left. We're able to download the patch beforehand as a courtesy.
Oh nice, thanks for this info!
Thanks FF dev team then ^_^
I was being serious also, it really does list Selbina as the most populated and Besaid is one of the top one's as well. I would highly and I mean HIGHLY suggest you stay away from the servers with only 1 chocobo. The 2 I tried was so dead that (like mentioned before) it was more or less like playing a single player open world rpg. I do see a ton of people on selbina but I don't see much general chat or public chat socializing much. Then again I have only been on it for a few days.
As for Besaid, I have heard from more than one person it is the unofficial RPG server and that people really get into the RPG roles and do a lot of role playing events.
I will personally give Selbina a longer try and seek out a social LS. This game is not FFXI nor is the whole social environment from what I can gather so far. I am sure that will change especially once 2.0 launches and def once the ps3 version comes out.
To Answa: Thank you for the info ;)
Marta you're not kidding. It really is VERY deceiving and can potentially scare off any new player's that is to lazy to ask on the forums or even give it a try. I am a very social person so I have never been to afraid to ask. Back when I was a kid and being raised I was always told" The only dumb questions is the questions you don't ask "...
WoW some JERK (excuse the out burst) decided to make Modz Bismarck all of a sudden. Naturally I was the only Modz on Bismarck being their was no last name combos so it wouldn't make any sense for someone else to make that name unless they seen me post up earlier about probably making it. ugh I knew I shouldn't have posted thinking about doing it until I did. Kids I swear.
or does it go by the first name? Does it allow multiple first names but with different last?
You're not likely to find the 'old school FFXI' feel on any of the servers for multiple reasons: 1) the servers are far more sparsely populated than FFXI was in its prime, 2) soloing is viable, thus lowering the need/want for forced interaction (and let's face it, shouting for PTs is what most interaction wound up being), and 3) many of the players here are very old hat at the game, and may not share the same...enthusiasm for the game that you do currently.
Having said that, Selbina is pretty populated and social.
To OP,if your looking for a social shell you cant go wrong with seraphim on mysydia.they are not recruiting atm but if you can get in it would be well worth your time, the site appears to be down atm but here you go http://www.seraphimls.com tell em I sent you.
Mysidia is a resonably well populated server with a good set of NA/EU players. It doesn't feel like Whitegate in XI's heyday, but you would find a lot of people with decent social skills to play with. Realize that a server merger is coming in maybe 2 months. Yoshida said after 1.21 which is due end of Feb. You don't have to reroll, and they said that they want people to be able to select what server they are merged to kind of like a mandatory world transfer instead of a merger. You can just play on Selbina for a few weeks, and if you enjoy the game when they merge hopefully you can pick where you get dropped. If you come to Mysidia send me a tell, and I can point out some decent linkshell leaders. We do have one or two groups that come over from Bismark too.
Social, chatty people is not something unique to FFXI - it's a hallmark of any healthy ingame population.
Day one go to uldah, and shout looking for ls if you don't already see an ls. Its crucial. I'm not currently in an endgame ls right now and my fun has significantly decreased, I'm looking for an ls right now and hopefully I can find one lol, without one the game is lonely as all hell.
The tanaka argument is so dead its not even funny.
Right... because Tanaka's original vision of the game was just like CoP/RoZ era XI!
- No actual battle content during storyline (let alone group content)
- Centered around Guildleves (daily quest system like WoW etc.)
- Surplus to keep "hardcore" players from making casuals feel like they were progressing too slowly
- The original class design
- Completely broken overpowered abilities, in a completely open armory system that made everything in the game soloable
- The original XP system
- The original enmity system
- 15 person groups with absolutely nothing that was tailored to demand a group half that size
Yes... just like FFXI. Damn Yoshi for changing those things to make it a casual WoW clone. I guess you didn't actually play at launch to see how little Tanaka cared for anything people enjoyed from FFXI being implemented here.
Sorry totally off the topic, just wanted to respond lol
Was FFXI made for niche market? I never actually knew that... For me anything that makes profit is infact profitable.
I also don't think that having certain style of a game (Yes, I am comparing FFXI to WoW) can be compared with marketing campaign. I am sure SE could have done with some marketing for FFXI back in the day as well, I don't know why they didn't, but I am sure more people would have bought it and loved it.
I am from Finland and didn't hear of FFXI until I moved to UK and found the game by chance in a game shop a few years later from it's European launch - and loved it from day one. Had I known about it from an add before, I would have most likely tried it and loved it even sooner.
You might be surprised to see how many people sign up for things that turn into "habits"
I agree with this, I think for FFXIV to survive they really need to turn the grumpy face back to a smiley face... and somehow make the people come back to admire the finished product and then hook on it.
I never said entertainment provided to the mass was a bad thing, you completely missed my point. I actually enjoy shows like American Idol myself (would I pay to watch it? --- No)
I know millions of people live and breath WoW -So, Blizzard did something right, maybe SE should look into that but hopefully do it with style rather than: "Oi, I am Ozzy Osbourne and I am a death knight of WoW!!!"
