I have names of a few psychiatrists if you are looking for any. (All in good fun, your opinion is yours of course.)
Edit:
I COMPLETELY TAKE BACK WHATEVER I JUST SAID.

Kid: Mortal Kombat, on Sega Genesis, is the best video game ever.
Billy Madison: I disagree, it's a very good game, but I think Donkey Kong is the best game ever.
Kid: Donkey Kong sucks.
Billy Madison: You know something? YOU SUCK!
...Did they ever play FFII? Beating up your own players in order to level was the dumbest mechanic in a RPG ever.
But, I guess considering the state of the game its fair to say this was the worst release, even though MMO's are completely different beasts than single player RPG's. I guess my issue with this is that I personally look at the story, and for that reason I'd rank them as FFXII, FFXI, and then FFXIV.
Now, I know that sounds a bit crazy but realistically, EVERY FF game basically revolves around the idea of a bunch of outcasts fighting an evil bent on destroying the world, at least the 3 I mentioned throw in political intrigue and other unique plot devices. It's not that the other Final Fantasy's are good or bad (FFIV is my favorite old school FF, FFIX is my favorite PS era FF), but the plots are kinda the same with a different setting.
I haven't played every FF but I can agree it's the worst one I have played.
"bewildering number of inconveniences associated with travel" ummm. what? Anima..
New rules for this thread:
1) MY opnions: Facts
1a) Everyone else's opnions: BS.
2) Final Fantasy XIV is better than I, II, III, VIII and X. Everyone who disagrees with me, refer to rules 1 and 1a.
This is the risk SE took when labeling any game with a numbered title. Though the styles are different, they are Final Fantasies now.
I hoped Square.had called FF11 as FFOnline instead...
And call FF14 something like FF 0/2x. Where you have to solve for x to even pronounce the title.

... Sorry, cheezburger cats always make me get carried away. >.<
I actually agreed with IGN for naming FFVI as their fave old school FF title. It's my personal favorite out of the entire series. I loved the magic-meets-technology setting. The characters were very memorable, with more than one having a touching story that brought me to tears. The opera scene captivated me. I loved how each character had a unique ability or skillset. Leveling with the espers was a fun OCD activity. The music was very well done despite the limitations of the SNES - hearing some of it to this day (like Terra's or Celes' theme) gives me goosebumps. I've probably played and beaten it almost 10 times over the years. Absolutely love it!
Well i personally think FF7 Dirge of Cerberus is the worst? ;X
although its not a real FF..
well and IGN hasnt played FFXIV since when? ;D and i dont care because ign does only care for games which fit the mass-market.
i like FF14 more than FF13 because i totally dislike the linearity, cutscenes over cutscnes... so and now?
its true FFXIV is far away from completion and perfectivity... but no need to flame on a game that is trying to turn around.
seems to me like they dont follow the development of the game, which is kind of unfair.
just my opinion.
Part of the still negative opinion of XIV is SE's fault, they aren't actively advertising the active changes leading up to 2.0. So in that respect, no media outlet is going to cover the continuing improvements of this game.
Another part of fault is the shoddy reporting of an evolving game. These media outlets either currently report their "unbiased" opinions based on their initial experience with the game (open beta/launch) or from word of mouth from people who also base their opinions from open beta or launch.
This won't change til ver 2.0 is released when the media will give XIV another chance. Hopefully SE will get it right.
Having said that. IGN is the worst of the worst (my opinion of course) of the media game coverages. If I happen to find myself looking at their website I don't pay attention to the reviews. They are WoW SWTOR Fallout, skyrim fan bois. If a game doesn't follow in those games footsteps they generally tear the game apart.
IGN is horrible about letting money sway there opinions in my opinion. As anyone who has been here for a while knows, IGN is known to release artcles bashing aspects of FFXIV that were removed 6 weeks earlier in updates. There are about as trustworthy as a crack addict around an unlocked jewelry case.
Their assessment of FFXIV was pretty accurate >_>.
I have more problems with their "greatest" section. What a load of garbage.
I liked FF13. As do did many people. It was a commercial success too.
On the other hand, XIV was like by no one on release date and wasn't commercially viable.
The best thing about MMOs? They can be fixed in most cases. XIV is slowly working its way into good standing. It may be one of the worse FF installments yet, but that can be changed if 2.0 is successful.
^^ I couldn't agree with this more. ^^
FFII was so horrible, most people forget it even existed.
IGN made a good call on FFVI though, that game is the star of the series. FFXII (intl Zodiac) and FFIX round out the top 3 in my book.
The Worst:
- FFII - worst leveling system, forgettable story and characters. I'm surprised the series survived it.
- FFXIII - The first 60% is a mind-numbing chore, and the last 40% doesn't come close to making up for it.
- FFX - almost as linear as FFXIII, but they hide it better, also the story beats FFXIII's
They were honest in there assessment. Xiv deserved every single lump it got at launch.
Leona Lewis.
Thats about it really. XIVs release state or XIIIs theme. Tough call.
The article is so right on everything: FFVI (my personal best! yay!!), FFIV and FFVII are the best!
As for FFXIV, it is the weakest right now. What else can we say? But just like they mentioned it at the bottom of the article, we can only hope for the long term changes starting with 2.0 to bring the game high to live up to what everyone expect.
Seeing from the changes we got last year and the changes we'll get this year, I am not worried FFXIV will rise high and proud in a couple of years.
I definatley don't like how the article says: ".... and one you should probably avoid." That should be taken out, in my opinion. I would personally put FF12 as the worst, because despite how much I tried to like it, I could never bring myself to play it very far.
My best is one a lot of people seem to have issue with, which is FF13. This is the *only* FF game that I was seriously very sad that it ended, and I wanted more. Part of this, is I just loved the characters and the unique battle system. In fact, I'm sure my opinion is going to shift towards 13-2 as my favorite because having played the demo - I can tell they have listened to player feedback. The game also had a very engaging story, and despite the linearity in the beginning... I don't see how anyone could say it was not fun.
Favorite Ones:
-Final Fantasy XIII
-Final Fantasy XI
-Final Fantasy IX
-Dissidia FF (this was super fun)
Worst:
-Final Fantasy XII
You liked FFXI, I'd say give FFXII another chance, you might be surprised (sad that they haven't released the intl Zodiac version outside of Japan)
On IGN's comments. FFXIV is an MMO that is being rebuilt, it's not only an unfinished chapter, but it's effectively an unstarted one until 2.0.
It's not even worth judging at this point.
Too much FFXII hate in this thread...
Y'all should be ashamed!
If we are talking about the entire series, it's a major tie between everything in the VII compilation that's not VII itself or Crisis Core.
Well if i look at the moogle king trailer.. and the cutscenes i would personally say its MUCH better then the other PS3 generation Final Fantasy Games..
Mog King Trailer
it has much more of traditional FF's while Final Fantasy XIII/XIII-2 are playing in scifi... very linear, cutscene after an other...and the battle system sucks also.
i think FF14 has much more potential
Whoever says that this game is better than ANY numbered title (baring X-2) is insane. When this game came out it wasnt even a game. A lot of people didnt like 13 and thats fine but it did everything that a standard modern game should. the combat system worked, there was a story, it was voice acted (although not very well at points) and it had other things besides the main story for you to do.
This game had NONE of those things at release. There was a grand total of about 1 page of actual dialogue, no sidequests, stats meant nothing (and still dont seem to do much), no convenient method of travel after ur anima was gone (which took like 2 days to run out), and the combat system was almost non existent (spam 1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1).
So my point is that 13 or 12 or whatever game u wanna compare it to might not have been your favorite, but when it was released it was a complete game unlike this one.
I think that FFX-2 was a very awesome game and whoever says i'm wrong is a dirty liar (because- i'm the only one who knows my opinion. you can dislike the game, though, I know most of my friends do).
I mean- The game really, really could have handled the main plot FAR better, they kind of bungled there, but all of the sidequests are pretty nice and oh god the battle system, what I wouldn't give for another game with that system, even if lacked the mahou shoujo transformation sequences. I think X-2's battle system was perfection incarnate there.
I do like how "worst FF ever" keeps shifting around through the generations and platform lol.
"FFII was the worst FF ever -- also the black sheep of the early crysta era games!"
"FF Mystic Quest was the worst FF ever."
"FF Crystal Chronicles was the worst FF ever."
"FFTactics Adavance was the worst FF Tactics ever."
"FFXI was the worst FF ever."
"FFX-2 was the worst FF ever."
"FFXII was the worst FF ever."
"FFXIII was the worst FF ever."
I mean, sooner or later you have to choose 1 lol.
