Honestly if it goes on the switch I'd get it in a heart beat. How could I turn down ffxiv on the go?

I'd love to see SE leverage Tegra's gamestream capabilities to allow a PC GPU to do the rendering for the Switch. It's absolutely dooable on a technical level (Rainway and the Video clip recording APIs confirm this) and the precedent for free companion apps has been set in the eShop already. I imagine Nintendo would be rather unlikely to approve a game that makes the Switch play slave to another machine tho. A shame really as it'd be amazing if well executed.

They also require the ability for Live players to be able to play only with other Live members. SE won't split the user base, Live only servers would be dead.

The Switch would be a big backward step for this game. Of the 4GB ram it has, 1 is reserved for the OS. 3GB for an MMO today is nowhere near sufficient.

If anything I'd like to see them add more optimisations for PS4 Pro users, and forget about any other console.

When FFXI was on the 360, you only needed a silver account, since it charged a subscription. I don't know if they would change it.

Actually, at 1080p on maximum, it uses just about 3gigs total between video ram and system ram, at least according to task manager. (not that I want a step backwards if thats what it would be)

Yep, but that was because Microsoft was desperate to gain a foothold in Japan. Nowadays, Microsoft has resigned itself to the fact it's not getting a foothold in Japan. As a result, they've gone to their current practices (AFAIK, FFXI was the only exception they made). Microsoft's way seems to be "If it doesn't work our way, shut it down" (see Windows Phone and Band not doing good enough for Microsoft and them shuttering both.), so expect Microsoft to shut down Xbox before they change their tune on this Xbox Live.

They did allow XI to be played with a Silver (free) account. But that was likely their desperation of attracting the Japanese market at play, and won't happen again now that they realized they probably won't be getting into said market very easily.

Netflix can be used without a gold account, at least on the 360 now. I haven't tried to use it on the Xbox One without being signed in yet but I have used it on my 360 without ever signing in to any profile.

Unlike XI era, I'm pretty sure at the point where PS4 "No Good" the PS5 will be out and everyone will just switch from PS4 -> PS5 slowly just like we did with PS3->PS4 this couple of pass years. I really really doubt the Yoshi or SE will quit on PS community agen.

All in all I suspect it'd deliver similar overall performance to a PS3 but be massively easier to shoehorn the game into vs the PS3's 256mb+256mb XDR ram arrangement. No, the Switch is more powerful than PS3, an example would be how much smoother Skyrim runs on Switch compared to how Skyrim on PS3. Its slower than PS4/Xbox One but at the same time its a much more modern platform than the PS3 is.

Why would they drop PS3 support due to that lacking power, only to put it onto the Switch???
It makes no sense lol. Xbox One S/X I have no issues with though. But a big NOPE to bring it to Switch no matter how popular that system is.

Well unfortunately this may sound bad but FFXIV doesn't need more subs or platforms until they fix the many issues with the current games population like housing, storage, bloated servers and many more issues....just imagine every server like balmung and Gilgamesh.

We will be reliving the release of storm blood all over again for much longer so my vote is no to the idea until SE gets their ish together

If the Switch was going to hold back the game like the PS3 did Yoshi P wouldn't be having this discussion. The Switch's CPU/GPU while weaker than PS4/Xbox One are much more modern than PS3's. In any event I'm confident Switch would run the game better than some of the low spec laptops currently running the game.

Things have changed now with Microsoft and Nintendo. Both sides now are more in line with playing well with cross platform play like how Minecraft will be cross platform play with Xbox and Switch. Sony though, is not letting it happen on any game it seems. I know before Microsoft was a no go and wanted their own servers. But I believe now it's more in Sony's court since they would have to let cross platform play between PC PS4 Switch and Xbox one. And of course, they aren't so keen to let it happen as they feel they don't need to b/c they're on top at the moment.

Isn't the main selling point of the Switch the portability?

Zelda is one of my most fav games and that new Mario looks great but I would not use Switch as my 'main console', mostly as secondary. Also certain games like 'I am Setsuna' for example are just nice to play as 'handheld device' game.

I just don't see how FF XIV would fit on the Switch given how it was brought to the public by Nintendo. It's a portable handheld device that can output the screen to a TV in addition.
Most of the userbase of the Nintendo Switch Device used it mainly for the portability (and some Nintendo exclusive chizzle?)?

How would one play this game while on the GO?
I don't see many people using the Switch 24/7 at home while they have the much more powerful PC/PS4 sitting there?
I just don't think there are many people who use the Switch as their main console and would be a waste of time/resources for SE to cater for a low userbase.

Then I haven't even talked about the specs... I wonder how the Switch will deal with alliance raids. 4 man party dungeon will already be over the top. Fly mount in big open wide areas in SB.. distance details should be fully removed and just put a green colour (or gray/brown ish for rocks) for grass, etc.

PSN limitation in other games is already bad enough. Would be great if MS and Nintendo allow SE to manage their own players and servers. Only thing im looking forward to this news is to play with the tv remote, but of course they will also limit other game options.

It's none of your business what platform people game on, quit being an elitist. Sony would not block them. However the big issue is that Microsoft makes it necessary to buy Xbox live membership to play online and that would be required for people to play ffxiv.

Yoshi said no deal. Inorder for people to play FFXIV on xbox, Microsoft would need to make having xbox live not manditory to play.

The nintendo switch is up in the air. To me the hardware limitations are what make me hesitant. Especially since it was launched in the middle of the console lifecycle.

Also I dont believe Microsoft will budge on the xbox live requirement

No, you need Xbox Live to play any online game.

An example is the F2P MMO DCUO.

DCUO is currently cross-platform with PC and PS4. They wanted to do cross-platform with Xbox, however, due to live restrictions, the deal ended up being Xbox players getting the game but exclusively on their own server separate from PS and PC.

PS+ is not required to play DCUO.


So in the scenario above, we would see Xbox getting their own server to play and Yoshi said 2 years ago they were not doing that. Have things changed? If so they were not in the article

I don't drive. How do you suppose I get my desktop rig to conventions. I don't have any friends I can call on to take me to the conventions, taxis are like £500 each way, public transport is a farce to get it to (I've done it once already). Gaming laptops have their place too. And I speak as someone who also has a custom-built desktop PC (not quite self-built, my cousin built it for me, but it's not a pre-build). Indeed, it's not the early 90s anymore. Look at the gaming laptops coming out rocking 1060s/1070s that are only slightly lower clocked (so minor performance differences). Consoles have their place too. And yes, I primarily game on my desktop PC (3 monitors FTW), but even I can see that consoles/laptops have their place even in gaming.

Looks like you need to go back and read the article again. You're info is old and outdated. Microsoft and Nintendo have changed their policies for cross platform play now. What's holding this back is Sony allowing cross play with other platforms. Right now a bunch of games could do it like Fortnite, Rocket League, and Minecraft. But Sony isn't allowing it. So right now games like Minecraft will only be cross platform play with Switch, X1, and PC. Says it right in the article OP posted.
