Ehm...what grind with the HW relic was soul crushing? It was all easy peasy. The ARR relic was a pain in the ass but if you don't want the grind don't get a relic. ;)

The only soul crushing part for me, was realizing I needed 3 of each Luminous Crystal rather than the 1 of each I had already gathered. Then again, when they nerfed that step to be 1 of each, after I had gathered enough from the Forelands to do all the remaining relics I didn't have done(I had DRG, PLD, BLM, and DRK already at this point) at 3 crystals per area.
I want this started already and at the same time I dread when it starts. Its a love hate relationship for these kinds of grindy weapons.
The first stage of the original ARR relic weapon was pretty unique; there hasn't been anything like it since. I think, perhaps, back in the beginning SE had plans to make the relic an elaborate series of special trials and tasks, but eventually came to the realization that it was a REALLY useful vehicle for filling parties in old content. As a bonus, doing so required a WHOLE lot less development effort!
SE has hinted that the upcoming Eureka area and its association with the Stormblood relic will provide something different, but personally, I'm not optimistic. The relic weapons fill a tremendous role in keeping parties populated, and it's hard to believe that SE would be willing to give that up. At best, I think we may see a few more new Trials or other special fights alongside the usual enormous grinds.
I heard the antiquated gear is going to be our relic armor.
If that's true then it better be some customization and not a simple iLevel boost.
I remember reading that the relic and Eureka were going to be linked toghter and release in 4.1(5), but since Eureka has been moved to Patch 4.2, isnt it possible that relics will be moved to 4.2? Did SE say that we were going to get relics at 4.15?
As i recall they said it was coming earliest at 4.15 but since its so tied with Eureka i think it was implied relics is being delayed as well, which really sucks.
If we're keeping the 4.0-4.5x patch cycle its not lot of patches to increase the relic steps for the final iLevel unless they release everything at once its just a long grind in this Eureka.
It's kind of disppointing they havn't told us anything about that zone, though I have an idea it just going to be Diadem 3.0
If the relic is being delayed to 4.2, this will mark the first time that there has not been a relic weapon competitor to the raid weapon. Am disappoint.
If they do start the relic so late in the cycle, I hope they tone down the grind for the initial stages to compensate.
in 2.x the relic was a more usefull weapon. when 2.4 hits for example there was the i110 weapon from 24-man raid, i115 relic, i115 top-tier raid weapon. new introduced were the i110 ex primal weapon, i120 raid weapon, i130 raid weapon (the upgraded i120) and the i135 top-tier raid weapon. so for early progression there was simply no better weapon than the relic and the next better weapon was locked behind the raid, until they introduced the upgraded ex-primal weapons (wich were i115) and give away the i120 in the odd-numbered patch. but at this point the relic was already i125.
in 3.x they changed it so you can get a better weapon through ex primals as soon as the ptach hits, and a few weeks later the weapon from the casual raid, wich left the relic in the dust.
You are correct , however they were very different animals. Relics in XI were game changers. When a Samurai suddenly doubles his weapon skill damage and multiplies his weapon skill per minute exponentially it makes him pretty epic compared to everyone else , or in the case of DRK dps is off the charts and they become nearly unkillable. In ARR relics were the best weapons at many points , but Yoshi pretty much said he didn't like that and made them second class to raid weapons in most cases moving into HW. This wouldn't be a problem except it took more effort and time to construct an inferior weapon that was literally labeled for casuals. Doesn't that seem backwards? It may not change , but I for one hope it does.
Come on SE at least release some stages with every patch. It really is a pain waiting for relics and some of us love doing them. That or give us a hint if we need to collect items and such -.- so we can start gathering them.
I agree that 2.X Relic was more useful but by the end of the final (or final stages) it was very much not worth it. Heavansward had come along and dungeon weapons that dropped were better then Relic..
Raiders also do Relic, so really it should have been introduced by now. Plus for all those that want Relics on all jobs which is time consuming..
I hope they don't pull a 3.0 and give you a weapon that's extremely low ilevel compared to what you currently are using. Grinds are one thing, but grinding just to get the thing to not be 20 or 30 item levels worse than your current weapon is kind of garbage.
I really don’t get where people get the idea that the relic is terrible from.
The Alexandrian metal spear was godawful compared to the final stage relic it had skillspeed ffs. Even for those obsessed with ilvl over stat allocation the ilvl of the lux was the same as that of the Alex savage pile of junk
Well, you'll do it, like I'll do it for better stat, when it's available. But for now I'm force to use what SE gives me. But when it will be, it's way to late to be meaningful and see a real difference in raid. And it will be outdated for the next tier like always.
Edit: the only moment the relic is "useful" is at the end of the expansion, if you want to do speedkill for the extra dps. Before that, it's worthless.
Indeed I wont denied that, for shiny and for people who don't raid it's a good weap.
My post was to answer the guy before me (in page 6) telling that the i275 was trash (it was, but only months after the release).
Thing is Relic mostly becomes useful in the final stages which at that point may as well say it is just for glam.
Does not help that SE have delayed it for Stormblood. Even people that "raid" are bored with Stormblood it would seem so Relic would have at least been something
I’m actually enjoying the lack of relic weapon thus far; its more motivation to do Shinryu EX at this point (or Savage if you’re willing to go that far). Course I did just finish the last of the anima weapons and I have all the Zetas I care to farm at this point (the book phase burns me out).
The reason why it's so delayed is because Relic armor and Relic weapons are coming on in SB, it'll be a grind but it won't be like the previous incarnations (so we are hoping and thinking) as it would just be too much to grind a full set of relic armor and a weapon in the way that was ARR/HW.
Between a i260 weap and a i275, it was not only for ilvl, the i275 was way better stat wise.
It’s only real improvement was the extra 20 strength but that was largely offset by the 133 crit which was worth a lot more than 99 skillspeed plus the augmented 270 version offset the strength deficit whilst still providing a large contingent of both det and crit making the 270 superior to the 275 and a solid alternative while you waited for the release/finished work on the 275 relic which was ultimately, the best spear in the game
So no I wouldn’t have used the Alexandrian metal spear if you paid me
I guess you were a far better player than all these players in top or even the guy that does all the math. I bow before you.
The difference between the tomestone weap 270 and alex was 8.906 more str for the alex (if you convert all stat in str, weight base)
The weap damage and str alone was 22 str more and SS wasn't a dead stat on DRG when that allowed you to add 1 more hit before the boss went away (happened a lot on last 2 turn).
Btw, if you read my post, you will see that I talked about the 275 vs 260, I wasn't planning to be a low dps for months before being able to do the relic or have the items to upgrade my weap (especially when I already have a 275, better weap, than all other players in my team).
Again, I talk about what happened to me and not everyone who are not doing raid or doing them in a slower path that allowed them to wait MONTHS.
Now if you like being behind because you think your stat are better "muh crits!", well good for you. The only good thing you said in that last post "270, solid alternative" that was, indeed (but still lower than the 275) only if you were able to have the items to upgrade the weap or didn't have the 275 already.
Time to talk about the topic now. Didn't thought I'll meet someone without any clue about stat weight.
My only hope is that the gear will atleast looks good and not the actual 290 that you can dye. I wonder what will be the ilvl, 350? they can't go higher without hurting the next craft I guess.
