It wouldn't prevent them from getting anything. The point is it's a reward for clearing the hardest content in the game. An incentive that makes people want to run savage and not just stop at normal. Just like high Tome turnout is an incentive to run the same two level 60 expert dungeons all week.

And a hardcore grinder would be the people who grind savage for their gear/tokens or the people who grind Ex primals for a weapon.

Casual grinders are the ones that grind Ex dungeons and maybe multiple relics. That's not hardcore, it's just excessive. No offense.

I think you are mistaking repetitive running of instant gratification content (cleared? here's a freebie!) for grinding.

Also, I'm not sure how you would propose "grinding" savage. Several raiders above, in trying to sound convincing that 1 i270 piece per week isn't better than 0.9 of an i260 (!), have made it quite clear that once you get your weekly freebies the first time you're done - nothing to grind there.

IMO, this is how it *should* be. Get your drops from running the content over and over, with Tomestones being a currency used to get catch-up gear, or compensation gear. Dropped gear should be the best stuff, bought gear the second best. If you are doing the hardest content (the so-called raids) then you should be getting the best drops. If you are doing group level content, then you should get that tier drops. Stuff bought with the raid currency should be between raid and group level drops, and stuff bought with group level currency should be lower than group level drops.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, SE decided to flip that. Raid drop weapons are the best, currency gear and raid gear are ultimately the same, and group dropped gear is the worst of the lot, suitable only for glamour or GC Seals.

The way I see it. In MMO's in general, grindable gear is something you have to work for a longer period of time so the gear can ease you into the raid content.
While more skillful groups and such don't need the best grindable gear to clear raids and they get good gear there to progress through it and do subsequent clears with the help of the better gear that they earned thanks to their effort.

As "rude" it might sound. High ilvl gear is like an "easy mode" ticket to harder content that others didn't necessarily need.
Better raid gear is the "reward" given to good groups for their effort.

Not quite. Currency (tomestone) gear is insanely crippled (-10ilvls) given that the raids may still drop the best (that is best sub-stat distribution) items.

Besides, this is an RPG; the best items should be available exclusively through grinding, not as free loot after a 10/15-minute fight -after all the coordination, for such a short duration, of 8 raiders doing savage (read: just following real-time instructions on voice chat, for the most part) is next to nothing compared to the long-term scheduling and optimization you need for efficient grinding across content.

Yes, dungeons seem to be intended as company seals/lore tomes grinding content, with some being better than others (hint: expert ones are the most inefficient time-wise).

I cringe at your belief that all RPGs must have insane amounts of grinding to get the best gear, mostly because that isn't even true. I'm also annoyed at your lack of any knowledge of how the raid even works. You disregard the fact that you still have to learn the raid fights, which takes way longer than 10-15m, have a 100x greater wipe chance than Lolfacerolldungeonspam, RNG based, and a weekly lockout.

Raiding needs scheduling and far more optimization than planning out what dungeon I can roll my face over the keyboard faster. You have no idea how the loot system even works in raid and gloss over the fact that raiders still have to cap scripture like "hardcore grinders". Unless you cleared the raid week one, being insanely unlucky is common and you'd not even reach i270 until the odd # catchup patch that is 3.5. If you need the best fear so badly, there is patch dedicated to your desire. Get over yourself and be patient.

You are grossly overestimating how much i270 gear people actually get from raiding. You don't seem to understand that once a turn is cleared for the week, that's it, you don't get any more chances for loot from that turn whether you actually got anything from it or not. There is no running multiple groups to farm what you want. There is no passing what you don't want until what you do want drops. There is no rolling on stuff until you win. There is no control whatsoever over actually getting anything at all for the week from raiding. Most weeks you get nothing at all except a manifesto page that it takes 1-2 months to do anything at all with, even for a shitty ring. Most raiders upgrade their gear doing the same thing you're doing - grinding scripture for i260. Any random i270's they get is just that, random blessings from Rngesus.

Anyone that had full i270 within the first three weeks was A. A hardcore world class raider, B. incredibly lucky beyond belief with their drops, and C. a selfish ahole who took all their groups's gobdrops for themself to upgrade their scripture.

EDIT: And I'm going to say right now, if you really want i270 gear right now and can't wait one month for 3.5, there is nothing stopping you from going and getting it yourself, if you think it is so quick and easy to do it. Find a group, make a schedule, and sit down and learn the fights. This is coming from a person who had never raided in his life before 3.4, never dreamed of clearing Gordias or Midas, never wanted to have anything to do with the stress of raiding.....and yet is on track to clear a12s next week, god willing. I did it, on MATEUS, the lowest-pop and most raiding-dead server in the world. There is nothing stopping a person who cares enough about this to whine on the forums about it from sitting down and putting in the TIME and EFFORT to clear the current raid tier. If you don't care about raiding, and that is perfectly alright, then you wait until the very next patch and get your upgrades as quick as your grindy little heart can take. That's what I did for years, and I was fine with it. And I consider myself a hardcore grinder way before I consider myself a hardcore raider. (lol me a hardcore raider, lolol)

Just because 8 items can drop from a total clear of savage Alexander, doesn't mean all those 8 items will be useful.
It's possible to get duplicate drops, or drops for a job that no one in the static plays. About half the drops from A9S have been MNK/NIN drops, without anyone in the static playing either of those jobs.

The majority of my gear upgrades have been from scriptures, with one A9S accessory from a drop, and the other two bought with A9S pages (that's 8 pages total, or 8 weeks for two i270 accessories, since you get one page per week).
Then there's the two Shire accessories that I've been able to upgrade through the gobcoat from A10S. Only 1 gobcoat drops per week, in total, so only 1 raider in a group of 8 can upgrade an accessory. I haven't cleared A11S yet, so no gobtwines to upgrade pieces of Shire gear, but gobtwines work the same as gobcoats (one per week from A11S).

The point of i270 gear is that it makes raiding feel rewarding for the first 3-4 months. Why would I go through the effort of defeating challenging content if it were possible to mindlessly grind my way to i270 gear?
If you're unable to do savage raiding, you'll just have to wait for the odd numbered patches. 3.5 will allow you to upgrade your i260 Shire gear through the new 24-man raid and through hunts.

And none of these assumptions reduces the amount (or ilvl) of loot for a weekly clear.

So, you're wanting to "grind" for the i270 gear in the same amount of time it would take the "instant gratification" raiders to get theirs? Current raid level gear is nothing more than an achievement title you can wear. It's not needed for ANY content. You don't get a leg up on another player because you have the i270 chest piece versus the i260. Furthermore, depending on class requirements, raid tier gear may not even be BiS.

I do agree that the relic weapon should be at a minimum the same ilvl as savage for each patch. Since it really is the only grindable piece of battle equipment in the game.

This is exactly what I would like to have: a longer and more convoluted grind tto i270, right away, instead of faceroll weekly grinds to i260.

If it was intended as an achievement title, it should have been precisely an achievement title (see savage 2nd coil).

It might not be BiS, but it's certainly doubling the options.

You bolded it, but I guess you do not understand it.

"Currency gear and raid gear are ultimately the same" is what I said, talking ilevels. ULTIMATELY. You start out buying the i260. If you raid, you can get the upgrade to i270 as a raid drop. If you do not raid, you have to wait a bit, but you will still be able to get the upgrade item to i270. It should come from the next 24 man instance somehow.

As for the rest of your post, you are incorrect. This is a MMO. MMORPG's are not the same as single player RPG's. That, ultimately, is at the heart of your complaint, I think. And did I not say, early on, that raiding is difficult, but that grinding requires more effort? They reward those doing the more difficult encounters. Those unwilling to put challenge the harder content should not be getting the better gear on the same timeframe. Even single player RPG's, you want the best gear, you gotta do the hardest stuff.

Additionally .. raid drops are not always going to have the best secondary stats. Parry on tank gear, anyone?

There's not much context to someone saying they could easily clear savage raid content with minimal preparation/scheduling if they were interested in it. Hence my simple "lol" due to how silly your excuse is.

Total Drops: 13. 8 gear pieces, 2 upgrade items, 1 weapon piece requirement, 1 mount, 1 minion. Just like how the mount hits the floor repeatedly after week 8 so does repetitive gear.

Given this is an FF title, it is both a stretch of game design and a questionable revenue strategy, since it seems to be promoting a “nothing more for you to grind; unsub and come back in X months”.

This counts as a very nice admission of lacking design. And it was well before 3.4 too. Shouldn't we request improvements?

I'm personally fine with the game's current state. Living life without worrying about ever actually being behind a tediously long grind.

Given this, I've got to ask a question. Why are you even still here? If you do not like, as you put it, getting "a middle finger" from SE and FFXIV, then talk in the only real way that counts : with your wallet. Unsubscribe, and let those who do like this game have their fun, whether it is with raiding or not.

The whole tone of your thread gives the appearance of "I'm not a raider, but I want everything that raiders get" ... well, either do the content for it, or wait for the upgrade to come available outside savage, or give up on the game entirely and take your money elsewhere.

And for what its worth, unless you've gotten i250+ for *all* of the combat classes, i190+ for all of the crafting and gathering classes, both of those including your retainers, and are finished with all ten zetas and all thirteen i260 anima relics, there's still plenty to grind away on. Even if you have accomplished all of those, there's still more to do, gold saucer associated stuff, and achievements. There is only as little to do as one's personal blinders allow one to see.

Relic model + EX trials for lanners + PötD (solo) is a good start. Diadem unfortunately has been dead since a couple of months after it's release.

Exactly my intention for next patch, since I ‘d hate to see my subscription go wasted on MMOers’ raiding desires instead of improving the depth and quality of the rest of the content. That said, I do like other aspects of this game and I would prefer to see it improving rather than pushing its playerbase away to cater to a raiding niche’s wishes.

More like “I’m not a raider, I don’t care what raid-specific equipment, how many more glamours, how many more mounts raiders get, but I want the maximum item-level tomestone set to be available along with a way to grind for it (and not something that’s 10 item levels less)”. It’s getting ridiculous how many times I have had to repeat that I do not expect the same items the raids drop.

This is quite funny to see, since most of the raiders who replied above complain the drops they get are “useless” for their preferred class. Is it that raiders have now earned the right to selectivity while grinders lost it too? Could you be laughably wrong in inferring completionism from grinding?

You do not raid as a WHM to gear your NIN. You raid as a WHM to gear your WHM. In that sense, anything NOT WHM that drops is "useless" to you personally. Also, any duplicate gear that you already have is useless to you, personally. Is it any wonder that they complain about "useless" drops? Not only that, but for any static, regardless of classes everyone has or is leveling, the ninth and beyond drops of any one gear piece (such as DRG boots) IS totally useless. Why do you think I said i250+? Its because there are weapons higher than i250 that you can get, right now, and i250 is the highest gear (non-weapon) set that you can get that is not capped. I260 tomestone gear is capped on a weekly basis, and unless a weapon set you back, you could already have one complete set of gear.



The only time where tomestones offered the same level of gear as the 8 man raid was Binding Coil. Second Coil's patch introduced Weathered (i100) gear, that was upgradable to i110. Second Coil raiders got the upgrade first, then we got Syrcus Tower (the second of the CT chain), and the i100->i110 upgrade was added after that came along. Final Coil's patch introduced i120 gear upgradable to i130 - and again, Final Coil raiders were getting the upgrade first. World of Darkness came along, and a few weeks later we got the upgrade item from there as well as Final Coil. Expansion comes along, and after that, the first floors of Alexander and i200, i210 gear, with the upgrade item only available in Savage. Then they add Void Ark, and provide a means for non-savage acquisition of the upgrade piece. The middle floors of Alexander come next, with the i230 and i240 gear - again, the upgrade only available from Savage, until they add Weeping City and a means of getting the upgrade item from there.

You've ignored it, but we are mid cycle right now. We have the third set of floors for Alexander, and the upgrade item for turning i260 into i270 is only available from there right now. The next 24 man instance will, if not initially then a few weeks later, have the means of getting the upgrade item.
